i really dont know much about maine coons but they look super cool, what are the "maine coon features" you mention in your post about people thinking their longhairs are maine coons?

The appearance of the Maine Coon is supposed to be a well-balanced. The head and muzzle should be squared with a clear stop. Ear tufts should be distinctly present.

For the sake of showing the Maine Coon is classified as a “semi-longhair,” so they aren’t supposed to be a giant puffball like the Persian or British Longhair.

I’m having a hard time explaining it in a way that I feel makes sense.

The French registry LOOF has some excellent illustrated standards for some of their breeds. Cedarseed has also put together an excellent visual guide to various breeds available for purchase as an e-book or physical copy.

It’s an awesome, huge resource that I can’t recommend enough both for the feline artist - be it big cats, other wild cats or our domestic buddies - or the purebred snob afficiando likes myself.

On the left we have Honey Sushi, a Domestic Longhair available for adoption mis-labeled as a Maine Coon mix and on the right we have Tigerfeet Billie Holiday the Maine Coon.

Honey’s ears are too wide-set and rounded, he lacks the characteristic ear tufts and his muzzle is not well-defined. His whisker pads kind of just blend into the rest of his face as an entire unit compared to Billie distinct muzzle that leaves no question where no question as to where it starts and ends. Billie also has the squared head of the breed while Honey does not.

Tallulah Gin is listed as a Maine Coon x Persian mix, although she is most likely a Domestic Longhair. Her coat is an excellent example of what a Maine Coon’s coat shouldn’t look like - not that anything is wrong with her beautiful fur, it’s just not Maine Coon fur.

Compared to this Maine Coon from The Opal Temple. You can see that the topline is smooth and “short” but the fur gets gradually longer towards the belly and pants where it achieves maximum fluff. Also note that the Maine Coon’s head doesn’t disappear into a Lion King worthy mane, the ruff is more moderate and follows the same pattern as the rest of the coat of being short up top flowing downward into the longer part of the coat.

There are random-bred cats with one or more of these “Maine Coon” features, and there are Maine Coon’s which are more moderate or more extreme and don’t meet the standard to a T.

I can show you pedigree Maine Coon’s with wide forehead, tall ears, insubstantial ear tufts, proportions not well-balanced or however many faults you want to list.

I can also show you random-bred cats with squared heads and muzzles, well-spaced ears, a coat that’s short in the right places and long in the right places and falls just so.

I’ve met cats where I’ve been told they’re a Maine Coon mix and I don’t go “Oh obviously” but “Yeah, I can see that.” This isn’t commonplace, but it’s happened a few times where the cat has been passable as a poorly bred Maine Coon or mix.

But what gets me is so often I see people - online and in person - who say their cat is a Maine Coon or Maine Coon mix, they sweat up down and sideways that it must be true because the cat looks so much like a Maine Coon…

And then the cat is the moggiest moggy to have ever moggied. Not a single Maine Coon feature in sight, unless you include long fur - and some of them don’t even have that! Is the resemblance that they’re both cats? Is that what you’re seeing?

If you’re going to try to sell me on your cat being a Maine Coon or mix at least show me you have a basic understanding of the breed’s conformation and show me what features make you feel that way about your cat that don’t include “big” and “fluffy.”

Cat shelter

Mayuri - probably devon rex/levkoy mix, found near the chemical factory, intelligent, mischievous and angry. Loves fish (including those from the aquarium). Mayuri had a small kitten Nemu (that looks nothing like him) with him that is also available for adoption. Both number 12.

Kenny - big maine coon, lived as a stray cat. Is prone to fights, but gets easily bored if you are not strong enough opponent. Especially loves fighting ginger cats. Had lost left eye, probably due to the one of his fights. Has poor sense of orientation. Number 11.

Ulquiorra - ragdoll, seems to be grumpy all the time, but is overall calm. Intelligent loner. If you don't bother him, he will leave you alone. Otherwise he will attack. Loves human females. Number 4.

Grimmy - persian doll face, is aggressive, will stuck his nose everywhere, extremelly hyperactive and angry, meows a lot. Prone to fighting. Loves hunting bats. Number 6.

i feel like könig’s grandma had a whole horde of cats when he was growing up, like 5 of em.

wuschel (meaning “fluff”) was a maine coon that liked to sit on könig’s shoulders and make biscuits on his head.

räuber (meaning thief or robber) was a mixed persian and had markings over his eyes that looked like a little mask. she lived up to her name, she liked to steal everything from everyone.

kuschel (meaning cuddle) was, ironically, very independent. the only person he actually liked was konig’s grandma (who i’m gonna call gertrude because that’s a name from the german side of my family). he was a russian blue and hissed at anyone besides gertrude (and könig if he had treats in his hand).

nena was named after a famous german singer, because the cat “sang” (screamed and meowed and yowled all the time) and she was a flame point siamese

katze (which just means cat) was a stray cat that just started hanging around gertrude’s house, and no one actually named him, so he was just katze. he was a little tabby and for a while stayed an outdoor cat but eventually got too used to being spoiled and moved inside for good.

finally back on my grindset for a little bit between college! i wasnt going to give caboose a redesign at first, but once i decided he needed more white in his face and big fangs it was all over.

anyways! to answer your question: i come up with designs mostly just through imagining kittycats while i listen to/watch rvb. a lot of it is through vibe, but usually colors will unintentionally source from their armor color or the color i hc their hair to be. most finer details and better marking placements are banged out as i try to fill empty space and balance the designs. breeds usually involve a mix of vibe and what cat breeds have similar coloration and/or markings to the finished design. i also look for breeds thatll explain traits that i'd like to carry over from human to kitty (such as caboose's big size being a maine coon trait, sarge's mustache being a persian trait, simmons being an abyssinian bc of their jumpy/hyperactive nature, etc). i honestly have been waiting for someone to ask me about this, so im happy to finally be able to explain my process!!

Tabby: Are they snuggly? Are you? If so, what are your favourite ways to cuddle?

-I am a KNOWN snuggler, I always be snugglin' =w= he's always been touchy-feely too, but in a lower key kind of way (if he's close/comfy with you there's a lot of shoulder/back patting) so it was quite easy to get him to warm up to how much I liked to snuggle and now we both love it TuT we are always touching if we're sitting on the couch together; if we're not in each other's laps/laying on each other we've got our legs crossed against each other or hands on knees or what have you, but once we're home and done for the day we're usually spooning on the couch - our heights lend themselves nicely to me being little spoon and him being big but sometimes we switch it up (gotta give my boy some lil spoon time u3u 💕)

Ginger: Who is the most intelligent? Who is the sensible one? Or do you share one braincell?

-We're both intelligent! While I was a more diligent student than him (which btw is why I befriended Maka first lmfao) he's never been dumb, just not motivated academically. Who's more sensible tends to depend on what the situation is; I think he has more situational awareness/"street smarts" than I do (he's VERY good at reading people's intentions even when they don't make them clear) but in times of heightened emotions sometimes I'm the one talking him down. But I also tend to get more worked up more easily than he does, so in those cases he's always very clear/cool-headed and helps me work through stuff! We might share one brain cell occasionally when we're excited about stuff haha x3 like music or good food...our dumb/goofy sides come out when we're hanging out with our friends as well (you wanna talk about sharing one brain cell activity, put Soul and Black*Star in a room together, when he comes over I have to run damage control loooooool), but overall we're both smart cookies =w=

Siamese: Who is chattier/louder, you or them?

-I'd say we're both fairly quiet unless we know you/are comfy with you? Volume-wise I think Soul speaks more loudly, and even if we're comfy with someone I think I probably have a higher tendency to rambling/chatting at length than he does, so it's a mix haha.

Persian: Are you a high or low maintenance couple? Who has the most rigorous grooming routine? Do you help each other?

-He's a bit higher maintenance than me when it comes to appearance/grooming, he has gel for his hair n stuff/shaves in the mornings and what not. I usually just brush my hair and teeth and I'm good lol, I don't wear makeup or much jewelry, just my scythe pendant + whatever earrings I feel like that day. Sometimes we'll brush each other's hair! 💖

Maine Coon: Are you a stay at home couple, or do you like going on trips together?

-Right now we're more stay-at-home out of necessity tbh; I'd LOVE to go on more trips with him but money....😭 so while we do love traveling/going places together, we've become quite comfy with being homebodies as well - really, as cliche as it might sound, as long as we're together we don't really care where we are TuT we like playing games/watching stuff together so there's always something to do at home, and we like going out and taking walks together too! But someday...I'd like to go so many more places with him 💖

Most of my favorite skyrim modded followers and what I think what type of khajiit variant and furstock they'd be.

I picked a domestic cat breed and a wild cat breed for all of them. The descriptions won't have that much in it. It's more the looks I'm basing off on every character. I also picked a quad-ped and biped for each character too.

Inigo: Blue tiger/blue tabby. I mean since he's already a khajiit you can't really say you see him as anything else. But if he wasn't blue I think he'd be a white tiger variant and an American short hair. I think he would still be a Suthay and for the quad-ped he'd be a pahmar

Lucien Flavius: Orange and white tabby munchkin mix cat / Arabian sand cat.

Sometimes he reminds me of my cat named Mellow when she was a kitten honestly. I picked the Sand cat only because it's small and basically blonde.

I definitely think he'd be an alfiq mainly because I read something about them being more magically strong. I also think he'd be a Tojay or Suthay-raht.

Kaidan: Brown siberian cat/ Panther.

I picked what I thought was the most intimidating cats at the top of my and mind and picked these two. I would have given Kaidan the Maine Coone but they aren't intimidating at all and are one of the most gentle cats to have.

Definitely gives Cathay-raht or Senche-raht vibes.

Auri: Abynissian/ Cinnamon Caracal.

I picked both of these because these cats are known to be wild and energetic and they can also be seen with as red so ginger red head gang.

Definitely Ohmes-raht and Dagi vibes. Dagi for climbing and living in trees and normally I'd pick ohmes since the bosmer and phmes are very closely related, but I picked ohmes-raht because of Auri's wild nature matching with her having more cat like features.

Caryalind: Yellow Ragdoll / Asian Golden cat

The ragdoll is seen as one of the sweetest cats in the world and the fact their are ones with golden coats just scream caryalind. The Asian Golden cat is picked it just because of the golden.

He's like Dagi-raht and Ohmes vibes.

Nebarra: Fat Golden Persian / Pallas Cat.

I have a whole story of Persian Catbarra being found in an abandoned barn starving and almost dead from being mauled by wolves. When he's living with his 'savior' he has the biggest attitude but he low-key has the biggest heart.

There is art of him as a khajiit, somewhere. But it portrays him as a Pallas cat and now no one can convince me otherwise it's his spirit animal.

I gave him Suthay and Senche variants.

Khash: Russian Blue/ Rusty-Spotted Cat.

If khash was a cat I think she'd be quite Russian Blue, just because.

Tiny and dangerous. Only reason I picked the rusted-spotted cat

I think she'd be Tojay-raht and Dagi

Taliesin: Siamese / Serval. My mom always told me the Siamese had the attitude of every cat breed in the world.

And Taliesin being a high Elf with dark hair matches the servals gold fur with dark spots, and the first serval I seen had the biggest attitude I've ever seen. I think

Taliesin would be an Suthay-raht and Alfiq.

Xelzaz: Scottish Fold / Jaguar. Scottish folds are so cute and their name just sounds so mature and determined.

When I was younger I thought jaguars and leopards were the only big cats that liked water because if a video I saw of a jaguars swimming for fun.

Xelzaz gives me Suthay-raht and Alfiq vibes.

Lucifer: Oriental Short-haired / Iriomote wild cat I was either gonna pick the Cornish Rex or the 'dobby' cat for Lucifer mostly as a joke but I honestly do think that out of every cat breed he would be that.

The Iriomote-yamaneko is known for the meaning "that which has flashing eyes". If you look at the cat you'll notice it has eyes kind of similar to to Lucifer, and the fact that it's critically endangered and my lack of knowledge of this species reminds me that I barely no anything about Lucifer.

I think Lucifer would be Tojay-raht and Alfiq-raht

Remiel: Greyish/Brown Mackerel Tabby / Black Tiger (yes there was 10 found in India, look it up *beware there was a dead tiger was on the search*)

I honestly thought that her cat Numi was a Brown Mackerel tabby mostly because I thought the mackerel tabby looked the most like how I imagine Remiel.

When I think of Remiel and which colors resonate with her. I think warm dark colors mainly of Orange, red, and black. Which kind of reminded me of tigers the most, but I didn't want to give her the plain Bengal so I look to see if black tigers were a thing.

I think Remiel would be a Tojay and a Dagi mainly too climb in dwemer cities safely.

Gore: Tortieshell Tabby / Female Lion

I think the tortieshell matches Gore's beauty a lot honestly that's the only reason I picked the tortieshelk for him. I think if he'd have cats he'd have a torieshell and a Bengal.

I'm specifically saying a female lion mainly for the fact that Gore is someone who is drawn to packs and is more of a hunter and not like how Male lions are portrayed as the leader.

Gore is definitely a Suthay or Tojay-raht and Pahmar-raht. Normally I'd pick Cathay for Gore but in the conversation where he asks that you don't see him as a great-sword wielder because of him not being a someone who's super muscular and tall, it makes sense to give him a smaller body furstock because it stick to his character.

Eris Light and Shade: Nebelung (german cat) / Lynx

I only picked Nebelung because of the name and the color of its coat.

The lynx is seen as one that's very reserved and quiet. Only keeping to itself, which matches a lot with Eris's personality

I see her as an Alfiq-raht and an Ohmes.

About the kitty fusions...

I wonder why each of the kitty fusions have certain cat ears and tail to a certain cat breed?

I think I can understand a few of them, like Paradox, Idris, Stella, Norah Potablette, Andres... :3

But for those who don't know, they might wonder why as well.

GREAT QUESTION! Which actually leads us to....

Fusion Rule of the Day!

So when I begin to concept a neko-cat fusion, the first thing I do is look at the subject of the fusion.

The two reoccurring candidates when it comes to this are between Neko and Nala. You see, when I think of Neko, I first think of soft breeds, friendly, fun loving. When I see Nala, I think she could bring more of a wild or grumpy characteristic to a fusion.

Clara is an interesting one since she is a youthful kitten. When I think of what Clara could bring to a fusion, I follow a similar pattern with Neko, but I also try to keep in mind the anxiety or jitteriness that can come with some breeds.

Step 2 is to look at the other candidate of the fusion.

There is plenty that comes to mind when bringing a new character into the mix. You would think that the first thing I look at is the personality of my character, but you would in fact be WRONG!

What I first take into consideration when preparing to fuse a character of mine is of they have any nationalities or ethnicities that could alter the direction of the cat breed. Take my OC Theresa for example. Theresa is of German origins. First thing I did when creating Norah is googling for cats of German origin. Same thing I did with OCs such as Lucas [Mexican origin], Coalette [French-Japanese] and Florence [Egyptian].

After I try to dig into the roots of my characters or potential representations of the AU characters, I then turn over to their personality. If there was anything that stuck out that could help determine the cat breed. Let's look at Coalette and Noel. I gave Noel the cat breed Serrade Petite. For background, the Serrade Petite is a very young breed of cat, and hasn't been around that long. What is known of the cat though is that it isn't typically a breed that demands special care nor attention; it instead just wants open space to play around in. This breed is just like Coalette, because all she really wants out of her life is the liberty to be her own person.

Last thing I look at is if the cat breed fits any particular characteristics of the OC.

If I could not find a breed that is either specific to character origins or personality, I could move onto what breeds fit a particular feature of a character. In Princess Vanellope's case, are there any beautiful dark haired cats? Bombay Cat. In Steep's case when fusing with Nala and Clara individually, what fluffy breeds of cat fit both the trait of his thick hair and the features of Nala and Clara? The Maine Coon and Persian cat each achieve both of these goals.
