every time something from Neil Gaiman's tumblr crosses my dash I'm so concerned about the people writing and to him like. why have you outsourced your imagination to this man? asking shit like 'what does Morpheus sound like in this scene' or 'what does this dialogue mean' or 'what's the backstory to this moment' like BABES. THIS IS WHAT BARTHES WAS TALKING ABOUT. YOU'RE MEANT TO MAKE THESE DECISIONS YOURSELVES THAT'S WHAT MAKES ALL ART A COLLABORATIVE CREATION OF MEANING. if the author wanted something to be explicit in the text they can make it explicit in the text and if it's not explicit in the text YOU CAN MAKE IT UP.

what really gets me is I 100% prommy these kids regularly use 'death of the author' to mean 'i can enjoy works by problematic creators' which 1) yes I agree you can and should (using some discretion re who it profits and what's replicated in the work) but 2) THAT'S NOT WHAT IT MEANS LITERALLY WHAT IT MEANS IS. NEIL GAIMAN'S POST HOC OPINION ON SANDMAN OR GOOD OMENS IS A NO MORE LEGITIMATE FACT ABOUT THE TEXT THAN ANYONE ELSE'S INTERPRETATION. the text has left his control it belongs to the reader now, you get to decide and debate what it means.

Alternative SpongeBob universe where the SpongeBob characters have their biologically accurate lifespans, but this doesn’t take away from the sweet and goofy nature of the show.

SpongeBob is like 400 years old and every 100 years he switches careers. I like to think he built every room in the pineapple and filled it with his inventions, and collected a metric ton of books for the library where he does research only a really long living creature could, and made that workout room but even after all these years he just doesn’t have the muscle - not that that’s gonna stop him from trying.

In fact he’s relatively good at karate despite his weakness, probably from years of training and he still calls it kah-rah-tay, cause he’s silly like that.

Same with boating school, like centuries in and he still can’t drive, it’s priceless. He still can’t tie his shoes without listening to that loop de loop and pull song. And it’s endearing too because he keeps giving it a go regardless. He keeps making friends and trying to be cool and working and jellyfishing, etc.

Working in the fast food industry sucks to everyone except SpongeBob, because living simply with his pet snail and neighbours and working behind the grill for the town is just as pleasant if not better than every other miscellaneous job he’s done up to this point.

None of his friends mind that he’s got a massive lifespan compared to them, cause aside from the time being the same, I feel like it would just be as notable as him having five fingers. Like living in the ocean amongst so many different species just makes the lifespan differences common knowledge.

You’d think that SpongeBob eventually outliving his friends is a pretty depressing idea, and I’d see what you mean, I grew up with all those sad theory and fact videos about cartoon characters haha. But, genuinely, in my mind this universe would go the same way, and SpongeBob would cherish his friends, rain or shine, 2 years later or 200 years later. He has the chance to be a god in Atlantis in Neptunes Spatula, but of course he’s not going without Patrick and all his other friends, no way.

Made some art for a prompt in the @aspec-tmbd event about taking traditional soulmate AUs but making them platonic, inspired by this amazing artwork depicting different colored strings of fate besides red. There's something so emotional about imagining that Murderbot was meant to meet so many people who care about it...and realizing that most of the SecUnits it served alongside would never have had that chance 😭

(if you're perceptive you may have noticed that yes, this is the exact same SecUnit lineart as that other art I posted the other day--I've reused it for multiple drawings now and likely will again. recoloring the same lineart multiple ways is fun!)

The Cartographer: We sent him down to investigate the Titans for his first ever official mission. While playing with the babies the Coordinator noticed that some spells had no effect on them at all, but their magic did have an effect on him. Like when they roared it would disrupt their magic in various ways, like stop their ability to fly temporarily.

The Curator: Charmer and the Coordinator began to discuss how to handle the Titans because they were Noncollectable. The Cartographer and I were allowed to sit in on these meetings but our objections to certain things were ignored because we were not yet adults at the time.

The Cartographer: They decided to leave them on the planet while Charmer went down and ingratiated herself with the locals, positioning herself as a god, the usual course of action. But then, as according to their plan, he turned the mortals against the Titans. Spurring them to fight and kill them in her name.

The Curator: The point of leaving him there was that they assumed it would be less harmful to him if his playmates and friends slowly disappeared until none remained. Because the alternative was being here and seeing everything that was happening from the Coordinator's Observatory, because they didn't trust us to keep him occupied and distracted while it happened.

The Cartographer: And then one Titan remained, one of the few fully grown ones, the most powerful of all. He had seen our baby sibling Collect a few assorted creatures, and he was able to reverse engineer the spell. He made his own Collection spell and he used it on our brother.

The Curator: We were all watching, and it looked like he disappeared in a flash of light. All that remained were discs. They were gone.
