Sand Drawings of Vanuatu: A Unique Artistic Legacy
Here is the next in our series about art forms.  This time, we look at sand drawings as an art form. Previously, we looked at many other types of art forms, and you can begin your journey by reading about them here. This is an art form I was totally unaware of, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my research to learn about it.  This is such an ancient type of art for the people living on…

Rooster skull with its comb. The skull was beetle cleaned, degreased, and whitened with peroxide. The sclerotic rings were glued in place. The comb was formalin fixed and dried, then glued in place. A super cool specimen done for a good friend ❤️

i think all the time about the line "in what year did fire lord sozin defeat the air nation army" and then aang responding "is this a trick question? the air nomads didn't have a formal army" and the implications of the history that the fire nation had been rewriting for a century. the implication that the air nomads (a peaceful nation) weren't brutally ambushed, but rather that they were ready to fight and may have even been eager to do so. absolving the fire nation of some of the guilt in a total genocide and painting the narrative that the air nomads were ready to defend themselves and/or that the attack on the air nomads was anything but a one sided ambush. i think about it a lot.

Vinland saga gets a lot of criticism for being unrealistic and too naive in its pacifism but I feel like that's a fundamental misunderstanding of thorfinn's character. His ideology isn't supposed to be universal, he develops it because of his circumstances, he's killed too many people and inflicted too much misery to be able to stomach any more of it, to the point that defending himself disgusts him. It's not a method to live your life or to change the world, it's his specific emotional reaction to his experiences. He's not even preachy about it either, when he meets Canute he admits that he knows he can't change the world that way, and that he can't judge whether Canute's way is right or wrong. His vinland plan is an attempt to create a society from scratch based on his radical pacifism in hopes that it'll meaningfully stick and become a value for the next generations, and thus create a society where it's the norm, but as we can see in the story and just history, it's going to fail. I don't know how exactly it's going to end, but I'm pretty sure it's not going to be by telling the reader that "You should be a pacifist all the time and violence is never justified". The story's always been nuanced, Thorfinn himself is just incapable of stomaching it.

crazy how often you see the exact same people who defend aang not killing the fire lord (usually for the fanon interpretation of it being about preserving air nomad culture), be the exact same people who say how "refreshing" it is that luz lets belos die.
i just think that's interesting. no comment here. just interesting.

clone wars was fr like “No you lemur aliens CANNOT be pacifist. Don’t you know staunch pacifism is bad and will not keep you and your loved ones safe?!” but then the moment a blonde girl shows up the message was “oh wow well that’s different! So interesting! We will have rational conversations about your perspective and why you can have it!” despite the fact that it was at the detriment of the Mandalorian culture.

You know something I always think about? The na'vi's reaction to finding out about how kinda similar some of earth's culture is to theirs (e.g Africans, Native Americans/Indigenous peoples) and Maori people (especially in regards to Pukana).
Same thing in regards to braided hairstyles.
Me too!
Like imagine the Metkayina and Pacific islanders meeting eachother and bonding over their tattoos and pukana. also i’m not sure if pacific islanders have spirit animals like indigenous americans but if they do that would be super cool to bond over! like the Metkayina introducing their tulkuns, i know for a fact if it wasn’t the fact that it’s the skypeople, they’d definitely bond over their culture and love of nature.
And the omaticaya, since they’re already living with skypeople, i’m sure they have met their fair share of black kings and queens! like Max Patel. So just imagine them coming together to share similarities between African culture on Earth and the Na’vi culture from the forest. Especially with the hair braiding, sharing the significance of black hair styles and also the clothes! Mo’at’s are inspired by the indigenous tribe, so imagine how cool if someone from Earth were to recognise it!
I’m so excited to see the 3rd movie and how they incorporate the Ash tribe and i hope to see another new culture! Maybe indigenous american or asian?
Also, do you guys have anything i can learn? i’m all for sharing cultures! And i would love to get to know who you guys are!
