We Have Always Lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson

We Have Always Lived in the Castle is 1962 mystery novel by author Shirley Jackson, who also famously wrote The Lottery (1948) and The Haunting of Hill House (1959). The story is about the Blackwoods, a very wealthy family who owns a large state. Since the death of their parents, Constance Blackwood has been taking care of her younger sister, Mary Katherine (better known as Merricat) and their wheelchair bound uncle, Julian. The three of them live in perfect recluse in their manor, but when cousin Charles comes to visit, he shakes up the family dynamic.

Despite their relationship not being explicitly incestuous in the novel, Constance and Merricat share a bond closer than most sisters do. If you have read Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, you may remember Eleanor and Theo, who weren't explicitly in a romantic relationship, but were very lesbian coded. The same applies for the Blackwood sisters, in my opinion.

In 1966 the novel was made into a play by Hugh Wheeler, and this play was used as the basis for the 2010 musical by Adam Bock and Todd Almond. But, more famously, in 2018, there was a movie adaptation by Stacie Passon, starring Taissa Farmiga as Merricat, Alexandra Daddario as Constance, Sebastian Stan as Charles and Crispin Glover as Julian.

The book is narrated by eighteen-years-old Merricat Blackwood. Despite her age, her behaviour throughout the novel is very immature and childish, probably due to the trauma she suffered at twelve, when the rest of her family (save for her sister and uncle) died. She's also very superstitious and practices sympathetic magic.

Merricat lives with Constance and Julian in the large Blackwood property in near isolation. Her only contact with the outside world is going to the village to buy groceries and visit the library. The locals aren't very keen on the Blackwood family, eyeing them with suspicion since the deaths that occurred years prior and resenting the large amount of money the family has, despite not doing any hard work.

No, really, the people in town are really nasty towards the sisters, with the children even making a mean song about them, akin to how people made that skipping rope song about Lizzie Borden.

"Merricat, said Connie, would you like a cup of tea? Oh no, said Merricat, you’ll poison me. Merricat, said Connie, would you like to go to sleep? Down in the boneyard ten feet deep!"

You see, the reason for the rhyme is that six years before the events in the book, the sisters parents, their younger brother as well as Uncle Julian and his wife were poised wit arsenic that had been mixed into the sugar bowl. Julian was the only survivor and Constance wasn't poisoned because she didn't eat sugar with her blackberries, and Merricat hadn't been in the dinner that night. Due to her being the only person present who wasn't poisoned, she was arrested and charged with murder, but ended up being acquitted and released back, much to the distaste of the village.

Probably due to her fear that Constance will be taken away again, Merricat has developed many "magical" protections around the property to avoid strangers coming in (it must be noted that Constance herself doesn't leave the house since the trial finished, so the magic could be to keep Constance safe). It's clear, from the beginning, that Merricat loves her sister and has a strong devotion to her. The feeling is mutual as evidenced by Constance telling Merricat how much she missed her, even thought Merricat had only been to village for, at most, a couple hours.

"When I was small I thought Constance was a fairy princess. I used to try to draw her picture, with long golden hair and eyes as blue as the crayon could make them, and a bright pink spot on either cheek; the pictures always surprised me, because she did look like that; even at the worst time she was pink and white and golden, and nothing had ever seemed to dim the brightness of her. She was the most precious person in my world, always."

Julian, their widowed uncle, spend his time writing his memories of the day of the poisoning, obsessively looking at the details of what happened that day and on the day before and it is through his ramblings about the event that we, the readers, learn about what happened. For exemple, he is the one who exposes the fact that Constance was the one who did the cooking, and that she has knowledge of different poisons. Not only that, but she didn't use sugar on her blackberries (although it was a known fact that she never did) and washed the sugar bowl before the police could arrive to the scene - allegedly because there was a spider in it.

Merricat is perfectly happy with Constance staying at home the whole time, as in this way she has her sister basically all to herself. When Constance starts to express some desire to leave the house, Merricat becomes upset and reacts by violently breaking their mother's fancy milk pitcher. Although she doesn't verbally express her displeasure or lashes out in front of Constance, Merricat often breaks things around the house, leaving a path of destruction on the wake of her anger.

"'We’ll always be here together, won’t we, Constance?' 'Don’t you ever want to leave here, Merricat?' 'Where could we go?' I asked her. 'What place would be better for us than this? Who wants us, outside? The world is full of terrible people.' 'I wonder sometimes.' She was very serious for a minute, and then she turned and smiled at me. 'Don’t you worry, my Merricat. Nothing bad will happen.'"

Before Constance can decide if she's ready to explore the outside world, the outside world comes knocking in the form of Cousin Charles, son of her father's other brother. Merricat dislikes him at first sight and even tries to pretend she had only dreamed about his visit and could "dream him away", but Constance seems glad to have the attention of a good looking young man, even if he is her cousin.

Charles claims he wanted to help his cousins after the tragedy that had struck, but hadn't been able because his father wouldn't allow it, but now that his father was dead, he wanted to reunite with the remaining family. Merricat is jealous of how easily Costance (whom Charles calls 'Connie') warms up to the newcomer.

"She was not at all awkward or uncomfortable; it was as though she had been expecting all her life that Cousin Charles would come, as though she had planned exactly what to do and say, almost as though in the house of her life there had always been a room kept for Cousin Charles."

To keep Charles away, Merricat nails a gold watch into a tree, and when Charles sees it, he gets angry because it was a waste of gold. His obsession with money leads Julian to start to think that Charles is only there to try to steal the family fortune.

Charles is no innocent either. When he realises that he won't win Merricat's affection, he quickly start being passive aggressive with her, even insinuating that he might convince Constance to throw her out. And at the same time he tells Connie she should not be waiting on Julian, Charles also has her cook and clean for himself.

Merricat tries her best to shield herself and her sister, but all she can actually do is small actions, like breaking Charles' watch and pouring water in his bed. Charles gets furious with Merricat's childish antics and while Constance doesn't condenes her sister, she doesn't defends her either, simply calling Merricat "silly".

"'You are evil,' I said to Charles. 'You are a ghost and a demon.' 'What the hell?' Charles said. 'Don’t pay any attention,' Constance told him. 'Don’t listen to Merricat’s nonsense.'"

During a large argument between Charles, Merricat and Julian, Charles tell them that Merricat needs to be punished, which makes her run away in fear. Upset and even more angry than before, Merricat waits until dinner time and goes to Charles room, and she finds his pipe, which was still burning. She then throws in into a pile of papers which causes a fire to start. They are in the table when Charles smells smoke.

Constance and Merricat run for safety, but Julian stays behind to gather his papers (the many manuscripts he wrote of his memories from the day of the poisoning). The firefighters come, but they eye the sisters with suspicion, causing them to run and hide in the woods surrounding the property. While all this is going on, Charles is worried about the money in the safe.

"Pulling Constance, I hurried under the trees, in the darkness; when I felt my feet leave the grass of the lawn and touch the soft mossy ground of the path through the woods and knew that the trees had closed in around us I stopped and put my arms around Constance. 'It’s all over,' I told her, and held her tight."

While hiding in the forest, Merricat says that she'll poison everyone and Constance acknowledges that Merricat had done that once before, six years before, by putting arsenic in the sugar as payback for having been sent to the bedroom without dinner.

"'I put it in the sugar.' 'I know. I knew then.' 'You never used sugar.' 'No.' 'So I put it in the sugar.'"

Morning comes and the sisters come out of their hiding spot to see the damage that happened to the house. Most of it is gone, but they decide to clean the few rooms that didn't get crushed or burned and keep living there. Due to the lack of a roof, the house now looks like a castle (hence the title) and with time, vines grow to cover the remaining structure. Charles, who had survived the fire, tries to talk to Constance again, but she rejects him.

The Blackwood sisters become a short of local legend and villagers leave offerings of food in their doorsteps. They go on with living happily in the house, having only each other's company, because they don't need anything else.

"'I love you, Constance,' I said. 'And I love you, my Merricat.'"

Like a said before, they are not canonically incestuous, but it isn't difficult to see why they are so shippable. They protect each other at all costs and can barely function when separated. Since the book ends with them going into isolation, who knows what feelings might come to light?

The Shining, Twin Town, International Women’s Day and WOW – special events in Pontio’s Cinema in March!

During March, Pontio’s Cinema will display a wide range of films, celebrating worldwide cinema as part of the WOW Festival (Wales and the World as One), celebrating International Women’s Day, and the iconic comedy film Twin Town at 25 years old, as well as a screening of the extended version of The Shining.

On Thursday 7 Marth Pontio Cinema will host a special screening of the extended version of The Shining by Stanley Kubrick. To accompany this will be the launch of the latest memoir of the life and work of Stanley Kubrick, called Kubrick: An Odyssey by Nathan Abrams (Professor in Film, Bangor University) and Robert P. Koller with special guest Gordon Stainforth, who worked as the assistant editor of the film, as well as Vivian Jubrick’s documentary about the film Making of the Shining.

On International Women’s Day 2024 (Friday 8 March) we will be displaying two films; The Piano (1993) directed by Jane Campion and The Bling Ring (2013) by the director Sofia Coppola. Jane Campion won a Palme D’or in 1993 for The Piano, the first female director to win the prize in addition to three Oscar awards for Best Writing for the Screen, Holly Hunter as Leading Actress, and Anna Paquin for the Best Supporting Actress when she was only ten years old. Then, a chance to see The Bling Ring by the biggest female director currently in the industry, starring Emma Watson, Katie Chang, Taissa Farmiga and more!

The WOW Festival (Wales and the World as One) who have been celebrating the richness of the world’s cinema since 2001, bringing a selection of eclectic, interesting and moving films from every part of the world to cinemas across Wales will be visiting Pontio for the first time. The films will be displayed across the duration of four days, between the 11th and 14th of March. The programme includes a wide range of films including films in Arabic, Bengali, Spanish, African, and Igbo. The programme will include Tale of the Three Jewels (1995), the first film to be filmed entirely in the Gaza strip and Mami Wata (2023), Nigeria’s black-and-white Oscar entry for 2024, a captivating tale that intertwines magical imagery and haunting narrative threads.

At the end of the month, we will be celebrating 25 years of the dark and iconic comedy Twin Town on Wednesday 27 March with a special screening. Following the screening, film director Kevin Allen and Llŷr Ifans, who portrayed Julian Lewis – one half of the famous twins, will be joining us for a Q&A session under the leadership of Nathan Abrams from the Department of Film, Bangor University.

The rest of March will be offering some of Hollywood’s biggest films, The Colour Purple, The Iron Claw starring Zac Efron, Bob Marley: One Love and DUNE: Part Two with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Florence Pugh. The live screenings include The Motive and The Cue from The National Theatre, London directed by Sam Mendes and Madama Butterfly from the Royal Opera House Live.

Dion Wyn, Pontio’s Cinema Coordinator said, "March is full of special events which celebrates Welsh, female, and international cinema. We look forward to inviting special guests for discussions and to be part of the WOW festival for the first time – a festival which gives us the opportunity to display a variety of international films as well as broadening our programme for our audiences."

SHORTCAKE. so. like. ok. if you know me, you know im kind of obsessed with hello kitty and all the sanrio characters. if i could make everything i own hello kitty themed, i would. but i kinda forgot until recently how much i used to love strawberry shortcake as a kid. i had a vhs tape that id watch over and over of the movie and if im not mistaken the tape smelled like strawberries. i also have, in my little box of important items, a super small ceramic pot with her on the front i got out of 25 cent machine and idk why i kept it so long, but i did. anyway, strawberry shortcake is hella underrated so here’s a psd in her honor. not recommended for use on poc. mostly for use on rp icons, but could be used for anything. as always, you may need to adjust lighting depending on the original scene color. price: $3

I gyd-fynd â’r dangosiad bydd lansiad o gofiant diweddaraf am fywyd a gwaith Stanley Kubrick o’r enw Kubrick: An Odyssey gan Nathan Abrams (Athro mewn Ffilm, Prifysgol Bangor) a Robert P. name. Emerson Garner age. 24 years old occupation. college senior. florist at bloom and bud sexuality. pansexual gender. cisfemale faceclaim. taissa farmiga monster. not available

daddies girl. always the last to know things. an only child born into a regular-degular boring average family where breakfast comes from a box, dinner is usually only homemade in the sense that it was cooked at home by all technicalities. emerson didn’t work to stand out. didn’t want to be noticed. just trying to mind her own business and figure out life.

her mom ran off somewhere in the middle of third grade. how typical. probably she stayed in cinderbrush. probably a’atan could tell her if she really wanted to know. she doesn’t want to know. so they packed up and hit the road, searching for the illustrious better life. what they found was north dighton, massachusetts.

emerson grew up with social media and old movies. not many friends for the new girl in town, but that’s fine. she had one from back home and the type of happy endings one can only find in cinema to keep her company. did she even worry about socializing? not really. call her a loner, or anti-social or just flat out weird. enough people did.

and suddenly she is fifteen, and her dad has a new girlfriend and there aren’t as many movie nights anymore. she’s on the sofa alone, and its dracula or breakfast at tiffany’s keeping her company, and really who even cares? because there are forums and the internet and her phone always emits a soft ding, the sound of incoming messages. requited love is always fun for a teenage girl, isn’t it?

a’atan came out of nowhere. she wasn’t really seeking a powerful and immortal evil to do her bidding. but she certainly found one, nonetheless. just a silly, harmless seance in an abandoned haunted house in salem on a night when the moon was full and the conditions just right. she remembers him like dark chocolate soothing and clouding her senses. whispering of all the things that could be if she would just strike a deal.

it was just little things at first. a little more money. better clothes, nicer hair. she asked to feel more at ease in a room of her peers. when her wants were ticked off, one after another there was really only one thing she could think of to ask for. within days she had applied and been accepted at byrne university. didn’t question when a rich relative with several years of life left in them passed and left her a small fortune.

its dramatic, but who cares, freshman year may have been the best year of her life, reconnecting, rebuilding. a nice house, just for her, more room than she had ever dreamed of, and all the time a feeling of being bigger. of being better. because she has a’atan at her shoulder, and he bends to her will. eventually she will pay, all debts must be settled, but the ultimate price is hardly considered where there is still so much life to live.

fast-forward. it wasn’t until a couple of years later she learned truly what being master of a dark evil could truly mean. when they didn’t call. didn’t check in. worry turned to desperation and it, he, settled about her shoulders like a favorite sweater. sure he was dead. but what is death really? but a temporary setback. it was a weekend of horrors to be sure. dragging him from the woods, luring that poor innocent freshman to her house, never to be seen again. performing all sorts of acts that still turn her stomach and make the consumption of red meat impossible.

there is no knowing the true details of the night emerson brought her childhood friend back from the dead, she has little memory of the demon a’atan splitting heaven and hell to return a soul and vitality to a corpse that had ceased to know life. but her debt has grown bigger, and it is only a matter of time.

the disciple: a few weeks after the infernal was bound to their dark power, the disciple was warned by their patron of another powerful entity within cinderbrush that had found someone to serve them. the disciple was to watch them, get close and make sure that they didn’t interfere with their grand plan. but they weren’t supposed to bring light to the fact that they knew of the infernal as well. so the disciple has since attached themselves to the infernal. friend requesting them on every social media platform and conveniently bumping into them while in line at the dark roast.

the ghoul: there was not a closer friendship than that of the ghoul and the infernal. they two hit it off after meeting at freshman orientation and were two peas in a pod ever since. you couldn’t see one without the other. even if you only invited one part of the duo out to a party, they’d show up together. so when the ghoul died, something within the infernal snapped. they sought out their dark power and bargained something dear to them in order to bring the ghoul back to life. and their dark power did as they were asked, of course. except... the ghoul didn’t return the same way they left. something was different. wrong. and each day that passes without light returning to their eyes, the infernal feels deeper guilt and shame.

the witch: the witch feels something when they look at the infernal, and they’ve yet to figure out if what they’re feeling is sympathy or pity. they’ve been around magick long enough to recognize a dark presence. and there is darkness coming off the infernal in waves. the witch is convinced they can save the infernal. they know they can grow stronger and break the bond between the infernal and their patron... but is that what the infernal wants? And is the witch truly as strong as the believe, or could this destroy them?

Joining him in this quest soon-to-be nun Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and a simple peasant-man “Frenchie” (Jonas Bloquet) whose role is solely designed for comic relief.

From a demon being released from the underworld, to an all too enthusiastic man interested in dark magic, incoherent visions – all leading up to the possession of a nun. Within the first ten minutes of this film, hints of a poorly written plot were beginning to show.

The jump scares and exaggerated fog did contribute to the occasional shriek of terror during the opening scenes; however, these combined effects were used in excess. What does constitute a successful horror film? Throughout this film, the classic ‘scary-movie’ clichés used acted very much like a doubled-edged-sword; during some moments this proved to be cringey, in others these clichés formed the overall tone and pace of the narrative. Although many clichés have grown tiresome to endure it could be argued however, that these film tactics used in The Nun were incorporated into the film with another purpose in mind. Allowing the familiar narrative to surprise the audience with maximum shock-value when the time is right.

Whilst, initially intrigue was woven into the opening scenes of a young nun committing suicide for reasons unbeknown, this alone wasn’t a promising thrill for the viewer. The plot was particularly predictable, the bloodied nun during the opening scene dragged off into the darkness, fingernails scraping the cement floor.

The Conjuring franchise has been extremely successful and produced a variety of well-made movies; however, they created The Nun incorporating one aspect of the Horror genre and bloating that detail into a continuously winding, over-complicated story-line. Despite these grievances, the entire film explored many interesting strategies, especially their use of sound. The absence of taunting music graced many scenes generally ensuring a further enthralling experience for the viewer. This component of the film piqued the quality of screenwriter Gary Dauberman’s horror vision, adding an interesting feel to the overall film narrative.

Whilst this Conjuring universe spin-off movie was created by first time director - Corin Hardy; he did show some promise utilising many new strategies and tactics to create a unique horror aesthetic. He expressed this through the introduction of the antagonist, Valak; within the film this demon was usually unpredictable, due to the lack of character development throughout the film. Especially during each encounter Valak had with each character; Valak’s true intentions were only made clear during the last ten minutes of the film.

During the initial five minutes of the film, the first theme is introduced; girl power. As obvious as this may seem from the very beginning, the tone of this film is expressed by the protagonist, the postulant nun (Irene). She is consistently portrayed as the unbreakable character, as the film progresses her character development is obvious. From the initial stage of Irene teaching children at her Monastery to her acceptance of her vows during the last twenty minutes of the film, growth and resilience are highlighted through her character. All the men in the film hold a supporting character-type role; whilst Irene maintains the most stable throughout all the tribulations the characters undergo.

Many a time, during this film – viewers ask themselves ‘Why was The Nun was ever produced?’ Along with feeling shock, horror and pure disbelief The Nun made it past post-production. Addressing the franchise, each Conjuring movie has a focal antagonist; Sheba (the witch/demon) present in The Conjuring movie; Annabelle (the haunted doll) in the Annabelle movie. Both of these movies plots revolve around a significant character and theme, whilst The Nun, containing many reoccurring themes and motifs, lacked plot development and vigour from the narrative itself. Throughout the film there are many scenes, pointedly the graveyard scene – failing to add any sort of inspiration to the films story line, other than following a very general cliché. Although an interesting note, that each of the three main characters undergoes change of mind and character specifically through each of their individuals’ trials and tribulations.

Although The Nun may be riddled with clichés, and peppered with the typical special effects, script outlines and plot-summary for the horror genre; there was unusually heightened screen time for the hero (Irene) to shine through. Whilst this may be interpreted just as to create an aura of mystery around Valak; there are many factors at work in almost every scene of this film. These strategies employed by both Screenwriter and Director transformed this movie, by imposing structure and a whole lot of scares to its framework.
