More gushing about Owen/Burn Gorman's acting as Owen:
People often characterize Owen as a bastard who's lazy and half-asses his job and such but I feel like that's so opposite of how he actually is.
If he can goof around, or if he knows it won't affect anything, I think he is a bit relaxed about certain parts of the job.
But he's someone who is very responsible, focused, and efficient in the field.
And more than that I really love the difference between "regular Owen" and "Doctor Owen". He's an emotional, sensitive, somewhat dramatic person. We see that when he argues with Jack, when he's surprised or emotional or angry. He can be a kind of insouciant shithead like with the pizza in the first episode.
But every time there's a scene where he's doing some sort of medical treatment, he immediately becomes calm, gentle but firm, very focused, responsible, and attentive. He's in charge and he knows what he's doing but he also clearly cares about the person he's treating and the treatment they're receiving. Throughout the show it's obvious that he takes his role as a doctor very seriously, even if he's willing to be a lot more casual or even kind of a little shit in other areas of his work.
I think it's such a good characterisation because it shows how much he cares when it comes to the important things, and how good he is at switching roles when it's required of him. He knows where the line is, and he doesn't often cross it when it comes to that kind of responsibility.
