I promised I'd get to it~

So, you had no way of knowing this, so this isn't meant to insult you at all! I just find it hilarious, because asking *me specifically* if I have any headcanons about Jason or the Grace siblings is a bit like asking if I have a pulse 🤣 I love them, especially Jason, and I think Jason especially is WILDLY underappreciated.

i'm a huge sucker for foils, so I keyed into Jason being Percy's right away and immediately adored him. ;; They've been my OTP for about a decade now (holy shit 😂). I could blather about them for ages and ages, but I'll give the highights for now:

Jason would rather be a nurse than an MD.

His comfort action is holding hands—he frequently grabs someone's hand for reassurance in the books!—and it's because Thalia used to hold his hand when he was little (also in the books).

He's very physically affectionate in general, which I think is partly a holdover from being raised by wolves.

His fatal flaw is either love, acceptance, or chivalry, and I can't decide which because I can see cases for all three.

Thalia was immediately soft towards Annabeth because Annabeth reminded her so much of Jason. ;;

There's also the spoilery ones for The Burning Maze...

I am *convinced* that Uncle Rick knew Jason was going to die from the moment of his conception as a character.

there are multiple references to his impending doom throughout The Lost Hero; it's like the gods are the only ones who can see the clock over his head

his first weapon ever was a coin. "Sorry about dooming you, kiddo, this one's on us." (you can thank slash wail at @simha-nakshatra for that one 😭)

Jason is Percy's foil. Percy's arc was learning that he DIDN'T have to sacrifice his life for his friends. Of COURSE Jason's arc was learning that he had the strength to. ;_;

oliver and the reunion

Friends. Fam. I AM BURNING TO TALK ABOUT OLIVER’S REACTION TO SEEING FELICITY. Because look:

Oliver walks through the gate. AND HE STOPS. He doesn’t walk toward Felicity, though you can see how much he aches to touch her. But he waits, because HE IS UNSURE. He knows she’s upset with him. So he waits. HE LETS HER COME TO HIM. and of course she does.

and then when she gets close, he reaches his hand to her. She has come to him, but he’s not sure if this is going to be one of those awkward “we’ve taken 3 giant steps backward” moments, so he doesn’t pull her in for a kiss or even a hug. (It reminds me A LOT of how he reaches for her awkwardly in 3x01 on their first date, where like - it’s Felicity, but also it’s Felicity, and he wants to hug her but he doesn’t quite know where she stands).

and Felicity takes the hand but she just completely skips over the awkward. She doesn’t have time to waste on being hesitant. She takes that hand but it’s just a step on her way to HIS FACE. 

AND YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH HE DID NOT EXPECT THAT. In the way he was watching his hand, waiting to see her take it, and the fact that she’s suddenly going for his face surprises him. He kinda gasps and looks up suddenly because it’s more than he dared hope for.

and he’s breathing hard at the contact and he just leans into it because he can’t fucking believe it. and he starts to forget his hesitation as the gravity of their connection just pulls him down to kiss her, and at first it’s just pure connection and relief at being close to her, touching her

and then his brow furrows a little and he starts to kiss her a little more deliberately because it suddenly hits him that HE IS KISSING FELICITY

Me???? NO!! NEVER!!

(Everything on burnerr is very detailed but not intense. Any dom/sub is minor and most kinks are played for jokes. That being said, sometimes a girls gotta degrade or choke her man I don’t make the fuckin rules)

No it’d be dope as hell though. I’m mostly a pitiful monolingual bitch though so I wouldn’t be able to appreciate it fully.

13. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Otp is a ~tier~ and I got five in there. I will say Kathony is the most conventional and least angsty of them bc neither of them die and I don’t headcanon them as breaking up. For transparency tho I will reveal I’m an Enjoltaire hoe and I spent most of my time in eighth grade searching HP forums for Tedromeda fic. The other ones are from random unpopular books written fifteen years ago that no one has heard of, but one day I am going to start those fandoms myself.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I’m a control freak so anything published will be finished. There are several things I wrote when I was younger, in middle or high school that I began but (thankfully 😅) never published. I delete everything too, don’t like shit sitting around on my hard drive.

15. What are your writing strengths?

I think I can be funny sometimes and capture pure chaos and tomfoolery which is weird because that does not reflect how i act irl. So timing, quick dialog/banter, balancing a lot of characters at once, and maybe action words! I’d like to think my work has good voice but it might all be the *same* voice? I think I’m pretty disciplined and good at Get It Done, but still always open to going where the story takes me!

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Well aside from the fact that I’m 1) allergic to research/history, 2) allergic to editing, and 3) pretentious (all of which will undoubtedly color a work) I think transitioning is hard for me! Quick jumps and seamless transitions and not getting too bogged down in in narration and internal monologue is something I actively have to work against. Also detail where doesn’t need to be any. My instinct is never just to say “Anthony deflated.” It’s gotta be a whole ass sentence describing it. I also think I spoonfeed meaning to myself/reader. Not everything needs to be explained! Which really goes back to the pretentious part, because I also tend to derive meaning where there doesn’t need to be any. Like 3am? A whole metaphor about the meaningless of time and the intangibility of when the right time to act is? “Is 3am too early or too late?” Girl shut up.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

As previously established i am a monolingual bitch! Id have no resources to make sure I got it right, and I think getting it wrong would be worse than just saying “he said in French” or whatever. As much as I wish we had them bc I would be more willing to write things I know less about, fanfic doesn’t have sensitivity readers like an actual published novel.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Probably technically Harry Potter when I was thirteen but first ever published Les Mis.

19. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

Different faves in different ways for different reasons! I have too many children. I’d be your little spoon was most cathartic. The curious case of the black mallet was most challenging. On equal ground is my best smut, The Harsh light of day DEMANDED to be written. I can’t say I remember anything abt writing summers a knife bc it was just a total fever dream so idek what that fic is about but ppl like it. Macbeth fic is the funniest I’ve been as a narrator. So…I picked a few favorite children for ya

Character ask: Captain Jack Harkness

Aw yeah, let's go!

why i like them

Jack is a spectacular example of a character who obfuscates by telling the truth, and it is FASCINATING. He's a great storyteller and an absolutely shit liar. You can always tell when he's hiding something because either he 1. gets incredibly over-the-top charming (if it's a con) or 2. just clams up about it (if it's personal), but usually you DON'T notice because he's distracted you with all his charm and blather. He tells the most obscene and ridiculous stories that are 100% true because he knows no one will actually believe them. And, yeah, he's has never heard of "shame" in a sexual context and doesn't see why he should bother with it, which is just so freaking liberating. Jack is the last person who will ever, ever judge who you are or what you're into, he will fly that freak flag high with PRIDE. And he's genuinely got the biggest heart, I think he really does fall at least a little bit in love with just about everyone.

why i don’t

The amount of manpain that Torchwood shackled him with did make him a bit grating at times, and tried to shoehorn him into the "brooding antihero" archetype in a way that didn't really suit the character. (HATE all the tragic backstory bullshit with his brother, so so so much.) And, okay, John Barrowman is entertaining as hell, but he's...not that great of an actor, and when the story tried to take Jack to deeper places, it often fell flat due to Barrowman's performance. (Sorry.)

favorite episode (scene if movie)

KISS KISS BANG BANG MY BELOVED. There is nothing I don't love about that episode, but Jack shone in it. The resolution of a lot of his Doctor-related angst immediately lightened his character back up again, and he also got to play charmingly wrong-footed and vulnerable when it came to winning his team back, especially Ianto.

favorite season/movie

Doctor Who reboot series 1, no I will not be accepting criticism at this time. It's where the character was introduced and what made us all fall in love with him so hard they had to write him a spinoff.

Jack/Ianto goes without saying, I think. They are such a study in contrasts and I still love them so much. Children of Earth, who? Never heard of it. But I also have a lingering soft spot for Jack/Nine/Rose as my TARDIS OT3.

We never actually got any of his backstory with the Time Agency or why they wiped two years of his memory. I do believe it's because he realized the Agency itself was immoral and covering up something awful, and that he was wiped for trying to get the truth out. Jack may need some guidance finding his moral compass sometimes, but he does have a strong sense of right and wrong and which side of that he falls on, and I think the Agency absolutely hung him out to dry.

unpopular opinion

...he's much more interesting as a secondary character than primary, and Torchwood works best when it's about the ensemble than about Jack himself.

My first introduction to Squash was a mention of her 22 Slash Fics for 22 Years (though it was 21, at the time) rec list. Then I had to look for more and was suitably impressed! Very thoughtful, detailed rec lists; but best of all, such good taste! Squash's recs were right up my alley! Even now, I don't even blink when Squash recs things, I just blindly open links and Mark For Later. (Or, for non-AO3 links, I save them to my Pocket app.)

Then one day, Squash recced Teardrop In Your Palm on her New HP Slash Fics Published in 2021 rec list!! Which made me feel quite famous, let me tell you. And insanely flattered. "This person who recs such good fics!!! Recced!!!! MY???? FIC??????" (Am I super casually sneaking extra recs into the Introduction section? Well spotted! Yes. Yes I am.)

Of course, Squash is more than just a gourd with good taste in fics. She is a very intelligent, enthusiastic, supportive fan. Big love for fandom, the community, the history, the culture, and more! She is openminded and openhearted. A rockstar cheerleader. She leaves such sweet comments! She has read a lot, and somehow finds the time to do all of this stuff, even with life being hecka weird and rough!

Best of all, Squash is a good friend. I can fearlessly barge into her DMs and blather about my woes, various dramas, and worst of all: really humiliating fangirl shenanigans. If I can shamelessly fangirl in front of anyone, it's Squash! She is a great listener. Very compassionate and supportive and understanding. She is an absolutely fantastic HUMAN above all else, and I just adore her!

favorite thing about them

I honestly love the spin that Hawks as a character brings to the 'top pro hero narrative'! Until he appeared our main points of reference were from All Might and Endeavour, both of whom have been in the business a while, but Hawks is young and the different areas of hero society that get explored because of him (HPSC etc) is really fascinating to me! Also, he's pretty as FUCK and I simp.

least favorite thing about them

My main gripe with Hawks is less about Hawks as a character and more about what was done with him in the series. I feel like we could have gotten a lot more out of the whole 'double agent' thing (but I am a known fan of Villain Hawks so take that with a grain of salt) but yeah, ultimately I feel like he was only used to show what the LOV/PLF was up to which we could have gotten with simply a villain POV. I just wished that the way his character was used was a bit more creative.

I personally really like the Trans Hawks headcanon! For me it just adds another layer to his treatment by the HPSC to think about what it would be like having to transition under their supervision/influence. Definitely some good fics waiting to be written out of it!

unpopular opinion

As much as I love the trope....I don't think Villain Hawks would have been a good story turn for him. No matter what some fics might suggest, a lifetime lived in and conditioned by a system takes more to break out of than befriending your targets. He'd make a formidable villain yes, but the impact of such a move on the story wouldn't be sufficient to justify such a big u-turn.

oh chels AM I. dear lord, it started so small! a mere thought! perhaps a few hundred words! little more than a drabble!! yet here i am, a week later (in complete and utter agony) roughly five thousand words in to a thing that i am probably only halfway done with but I AM GOING TO MAKE IT. i love this dumb fic even as it slowly kills me. (i realized that i don’t ever write canon because my brain cannot possibly allow me to get a single detail wrong?? guess who googled what they called sunburn in medieval times last night at 1 am? THIS IDIOT.*) here’s a snippet for anyone interested, though no promises it stays exactly as is!

They wake many nights together, caught in alternating and conflicting cycles of grief and terror. Their long years together have meant many battles and many deaths. The comfort Nicolo takes from being in Yusuf’s arms each time he starts awake - well, he cannot find the words. Not aloud, at least. He’s not sure he will ever be able to put into speech the gratitude he feels for Yusuf’s presence in his life, for his tender heart and fierce strength, for the love they have labored over - together.

The dreams still come, though Nicolo knows now - with the weight of years and endless time stretched out before and beyond him - that the call for murder will always come from the mouths of men and not from His lips. Nicolo fought and died with blood on his hands not because God willed it, but because war is inevitable when powerful men wield holiness as a weapon. 

“War is inevitable,” Yusuf would interject, “because humanity innovates endlessly towards violence.”
