He experiences this "Crushing Blow" (title of S1 E21, where his squad is slaughtered), and in "The Defeated" (S1 E22), stops to gaze - what was that, in his gaze? - at Petra's broken body by the tree.

Then he takes Petra's, and only Petra's, patch.

For every battle before and each battle henceforth, he comes prepared to lose everything. But in this one expedition, for this one soldier, he didn't. So he takes her patch.

"It's proof that they existed, at least for me." (Levi, in The Defeated)

He needed proof that she existed, because he wasn't ready to lose her.

Okay, I get we all simp over the same fictional peoples, and it annoys the hell outta me when someone is like, “no, they’re mine!” That is not what this post is!!

When someone writes a fic with themselves or with another specific person in mind ((a friend, a moot, whatever)) it is, oddly enough, for that person!! Whoa. Weird. I know.

And also, when some has self ship art, again, it’s for them!!

So, don’t come onto a fic and complain that it doesn’t fit you, it wasn’t supposed to! You can either read it for the story it is and enjoy it, or leave. It’s really not that hard.

Then, it’s kinda the opposite with art, if someone has made it abundantly obvious that a piece of art is a canon character with them or an OC, for the love of all that is pure in the world, do not be like, “omg it looks like me!!” No. Not it actually looks like it’s the person it was supposed to be for!!

We all simp over the same people, we share headcanons, and story ideas. But, we’re also allowed to have our own versions of ourselves with these characters, that’s okay. Not everything has to be for everyone.

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to do this PSA for a while now, but please, PLEASE, if you aren't a mutual or someone who very distinctly knows they're a friend of mine (and you'll know), please be respectful about my characters.

I haven't had anyone detailing like that they wanna touch my characters or anything like that, at least for a bit, but it's just subtle things like some of the tags on my vampire Violette post and stuff along those lines. It just makes me feel really uncomfortable.

Generally speaking, though, if I'm not mutials with you, or if we're not talking off of tumblr, we aren't friendly enough for you to be weird about me or my characters. To a degree, they're an extension of me, and I have boundaries. Please respect them.
