As far as second chance first dates went, the one currently underway was definitely shaping up to be a unique experience. Most of downtown Hawkins was unfortunately shutdown due to the significant structural damages to many local businesses that were in very desperate need of repair. Additionally, roads were not in great shape either and some were downright undriveable so they ended up having to park Steve's car and walk around to find something date worthy to do.

"Come on, something has to be open..." Steve complains after about 30 minutes of walking and no real success in finding something that was open. There were a few shops and drug stores open but nothing that was really date appropriate unless they wanted to buy groceries together and listen to the radio at Radio Shack. After strolling up another street with no luck, he was about to suggest that they call it a night and reschedule their date for a better time when a loud crack of thunder roared through the sky and a rainfall followed.

His face pointed upward as the rain began to shower down on them, Steve looks back down at Nancy and he just starts laughing. Every conceivable thing that could possibly go wrong on a first date, even a second chance one, had pretty much happened here tonight. They should be upset because the downpour was almost overkill at this point but the whole thing was just kind of funny instead. It was like a scene out of a comedy movie or something.

Completely drenched now, his laughter starts to fall off but his grin remains as he pulls Nancy into him. Maybe this wasn't the date they were hoping for but they could still have their fun anyway. "Ever danced in the rain before?" He asks her before taking one of her hands in his and lacing their fingers together. His other hand drifts down to her lower back, holding her close like that as he starts to slowly maneuver around with her. "I'm not exactly an expert but I did learn a thing or two from prom."

He almost wished they hadn't ditched the car so he could play them some music but he makes it work, humming to the tune of Waiting for a Girl Like You as he moves in step with her. The rest of the world around them may as well have ceased to exist as he held her close and then slowly spun her out before drawing her back into his arms. He wasn't sure how long they carried on like that for but he eventually brings the dance to an end, slowly dipping with her one final time before righting her again.

Still holding her close against him, the rain hadn't really let up any and they were both soaked down to the bone. Leaning in the capture her lips in a tender kiss, he pulls back with a small smile. "This was fun..." He tells her, because he had meant it when he said it didn't matter what they did so long as he got to be with her. "Maybe we should..." He pauses, a light bulb going off in his head as an idea suddenly struck him. He was about to suggest that maybe they go back to the car and head home to get dry but the date didn't have to end here. "You know what? I have an idea."

"Okay, so it's not exactly the cinemas," Steve starts to explain as he guides Nancy along, walking more fast pace so they could finally get out of this rain. Stopping very briefly as they arrived, he gestures toward the Family Video across the street with a nod of his head. "But it's pretty damn close, right?" So maybe it wasn't that close but it had a nice selection of movies and some snacks the theater usually sold, minus the movie theater popcorn since the packaged stuff just didn't hit the same. Still, there was a nice size TV inside and he had his own keys. They could make it work.

What do you think about it is about Kendall that’s it’s like, of course he’s the only one with a real friend?

It's lowkey one of my favourite choices on the show, anon, just because I think it's so revealing in more ways than one. Like, it makes sense, not just because of who Kendall is, but also who his siblings are, and the different ways they navigate their way through the world.

Interestingly, I think Connor and Shiv actually have the clearest boundary (or hurdle, depending on how you look at it) when it comes to fostering friendships, and while I think those things are different, I think they're both steeped in these factors of them as characters that shape their experiences of adulthood.

I think Connor's stems from an extremely disrupted childhood between his mother's mental health, her institutionalisation, his father's absence and reappearance, and then his being pushed into a parentified role to the golden trio at a formative age (canon explicitly tells us that too! Camping trips, fishing trips, fulfilling the father duties at Shiv's wedding before Logan decides to show up!) when he should've been away at college building his own relationships, in order to feel he had any sort of place in his family.

Similarly, I think Shiv has been soaked in hatred for her own gender since she's been born. Her relationship with her mother is strained and seems to have been weaponised by her father, she likely went to an all girls school (Spence, I imagine, which is basically the all girls equivalent of Buckley, the all boys school we know Kendall went to) and her own misogyny hampered any genuine friendship attempts. I think Shiv probably had frenemies, but nothing deeply meaningful, because vulnerability and emotional honesty is something she can't allow herself if she wants to survive in a male-dominated household festering in a male-dominated industry. I think male friendships were off the table in that sense too because Shiv seems to have always sought power in whatever way she could, and the two things she has to exert power are her name and her sexuality and at least her sexuality is hers.

I think Roman's a little harder to put a pin in in that sense, because I think he's a little bit of both of them, and a whole lot his own thing. I think he's experienced a part of Connor's disrupted childhood by having been shipped away to school and for his physical abuse, and I think he's experienced a part of Shiv's self-loathing for a part of his identity he can't face up to, but I also think Roman on paper should have friends. Roman's funny and insightful and (most of the time) the right sort of mean, and he's no more self-defensive than the rest of them, but I think the reason comes down to the biggest difference between him and Kendall:

Roman can be honest without being vulnerable, whereas Kendall can be vulnerable without being honest.

Roman as a character isn't actually particularly duplicitous. He can absolutely be an asshole, but he doesn't play to what people want in the way that both Kendall and Shiv (and even to an extent, Connor) do. His moments of vulnerability though are rare, often private, often, still, fleeting and guarded, while his moments of honesty are more frequent, yet often just ugly and naked and there. He fronts to it, and takes it, and usually tells the other person to take it too, which is what he did with Gerri and Tabitha and even Lawrence way back at the start of the series.

Kendall's not an honest person, but he is someone who's inherently vulnerable, and I think it pulls people to him, despite themselves. We've seen it in real time with Naomi and even Greg, and retrospectively with Rava, Stewy and Frank. He can break, he can curl in a lap or bury a head in a shoulder while still telling half truths or nothing at all. God, probably one of the best examples is in 2.04 when he pulls Shiv into a hug while talking around what she actually wants to hear.

Kendall lets people mop up the blood while he either tries to hide, ignore or justify the wound, and I think that vulnerability lets people feel a degree of intimacy with him and protectiveness of him that becomes muddied as they discover that Kendall is inherently a dishonest person and an addict, as it seems most characters in this show have learnt the hard way. After all, discovering that he's not told you a whole truth doesn't erase the memory of the weight of his head against your shoulder.

here's some recent flubs + failures from the past month!

#my art #rotten yams #cursed yams #so out of three of these. two of them i fixed/redid #and one of them i just straight up abandoned #the one i straight up abandoned was the first one—it was a ponyo au doodle w/ yamato as fujimoto #naruto as ponyo. and sasuke as sosuke ofc. very silly au but my drawing felt too...off. idk what it was #naruto is climbing up a wall btw and yamato is standing on the ground below #the second one...as always i was inking something and accidentally whacked yamato with the side of my fist #and bc ink pools in dark spots like eyes. it wasnt dry yet. so. SPLAT! i gave him a black eye 😔 #the final one.....it wasnt working. i redrew the whole thing and re contextualized it. #eventually it became the spooky story yamato comic for tendaysoftenzo #its funny that the first one is the one i abandoned because its the one out of these (even before i blacked yamatos eye) i liked the most #but it was just frustrating me to work on. either the idea isnt ready or im not ready but either way its fine #im always saying that if u get tired or upset or frustrated its ok to stop working + i do rlly mean that like. failures are okay #and theyre still valuable! u learn a lot of things thru failure #and its freeing to give up on a drawing knowing that if u want u can come back later #and i was happy to come back to the latter two. and im happy to abandon the first. it feels good

happy may day y'all remember that if you want to unionize your work place (and you absolutely should), the first step is getting familiar with your coworkers. one of the most important stages of forming a union is having conversations about the possibility of unionizing and what people want from a union in your workplace. you can't do this if you don't know them well enough to talk to them

How the Starlight Boss Fight Could Go

I apparently have a lot of feelings on this topic. This will just be me pasting a comment I made on the original Dreamworld video From back when it was a FNAF game concept. I really liked what I wrote so I'm posting it here.

Anyway....

Okay, imagine the Star fight happens later in the game after a heart to heart. Maybe seeing Glory and Rex interacting makes Star remember that he had someone like that. He can't remember the person's face, but he remembers details about him. Like how he gave the best hugs, how he would actively listen to anything you talked aboit and would ack questions. Like he was dying to know more about anything, from some story you made up in your head to how you put together a robotic fox creature for robotics class/club. How he would bring people together and was happiest when surrounded by loved ones all making each other happy.

And as he starts gushing about this person, maybe even aboit to say his name or reveal something about his own past, the bluey mask clicks into place and suddenly Star completely changes.

Maybe there are dialogue optioks and knowing more about the characters will help you pick the dialogue that makes him angry or sad. Heck, maybe on the second playthrough you unlock an option that reveals something about the player character and his motivations and it stops the boss fight by evoking the scarlet mask through bittersweet emotions or shock or something.

I freaking love the potential of an emotionally driven boss fight!

ooo tell me more about med student steve & nurse eddie 💕💕💕

HELLO JANAI!!! this fic is the one I'm most actively writing rn (as opposed to Kas!Steve AU where i'm constantly rotating it in my brain like a rotisserie chicken, but that's for outlining/untangling knots in the plot reasons lmao) so I am Very Happy to talk about it <3

I did actually finish properly outlining this AU today too!! Unless inspiration strikes me and I write way too much for something, it looks like this fic will be 7 chapters and a short epilogue.

SO, to answer your ask I'm going to share with you what some of the other ST characters (those that I've slotted into a healthcare role, at least) are doing in this AU:

Chrissy is the ward clerk, aka the person who handles all the admin tasks, on the ward Eddie works on! They're best friends, and if there's a quiet moment (or more likely, Eddie is on break) you can usually find them talking shit together at Chrissy's desk. Chrissy is also a bi icon in this AU 🩷💜💙

Joyce is the Nurse Unit Manager of the ward - as the title implies, she's the boss of the nursing staff on the ward and in charge of things like making sure hospital policies are being followed & organizing the nursing team so all patients are adequately cared for. She is Very Overworked but she runs a tight ship!

Argyle is one of the hospital pharmacists, and Jonathan is a trainee hospital pharmacist working with him (but not directly under him as Argyle's personal trainee. That'd be a little weird, considering they're dating). Argyle is also working on a research paper about the benefits of medicinal marijuana (with hopes the team's findings will contribute to further legalisation across the country).

Jason sucks. Jason is a medical student on placement with Steve, and he's... he's what we call a gunner. In med school, gunners are students who are ambitious to a fault, potentially willing to throw other students under the bus to further their own career or academic performance, and often focus too much on the "being right"/"being The Best at medicine" aspects of being a doctor instead of prioritizing the patient and their needs. Basically, he's an out-of-touch privileged jackass who comes from a long line of doctors, and has therefore just Assimilated into the family destiny without ever thinking about what being a doctor actually means.

Vickie works in the hospital pathology centre - she's one of the people who picks up samples and processes them after the doctors or nurses drop them off. Every time Robin goes up there (because it's common to send the med students off to drop off the pathology samples) she is So Very Normal and makes Normal People Conversation with Vickie. Robin is so smooth, I promise.

Nancy is another medical student like Robin & Steve are, and she's currently with the consult psychiatry team with Robin. Nancy is also dating Jonathan, because Jonathan has two hands, and Nancy is very interested in the research work Argyle does. She is still Steve's ex-girlfriend in this AU - they had a poorly-thought-out brief relationship in their first year of medical school, and no one in the medical school has let them live it down.

Dr Henry Creel is the consultant doctor in charge of the Internal Medicine team Steve & Jason are currently with. As he's in charge of the team, he's the one who grades the med students and decides if they pass or fail their placement term. I'm sure nothing bad will come of this.

For reference, the "young adults" of the ST cast are in their mid-twenties in this AU. Also, Henry is Older here, since in canon he's like... what, 40 in 1986? He's at least in his fifties in this AU, since consultant doctors are rarely any younger than that (particularly if they're not brand new to the job).

Also, if I haven't said this elsewhere already, this is a modern AU! No way am I forcing myself to replace all my healthcare knowledge with healthcare knowledge from 40 years ago for this fic, it's bad enough I have to pretend to understand how the American healthcare system works lmao
