This is a big question that I am going to try to summarise my thoughts on.

I think the first thing is that in part this is much broader than just Louis but how a lot of people within fandom see the world, the role Louis (& Harry/Zayn/Liam - I see it less with Niall, though it may just be I don't see it) plays in their life and their desire to exert control over behaviour. That doesn't just apply to alcohol, you see it with smoking, weed, drug use, their relationships, family and friendships.

Louis has spoken about drinking in a range of situations and he has talked that about that as something he enjoys socially, and that sometimes he has a drink before/during a show because the ritual of it calms his nerves. I think Louis (and the others) have had plenty of experience with alcohol and drug use, and they've probably all used alcohol and drugs at times when that maybe hasn't been helpful for them. But all of that, every single decision they make, every single drink they have or line they snort or joint they smoke is not for fans to pass judgement on.

The other thing fans need to understand is how accessible drugs and alcohol are. In the UK as an average person, weed, coke and ket in particular are as accessible as vodka red bull. They're a pretty big part of pub/club/festival culture and tbh life. I think you would struggle harder to find someone in the UK who hasn't tried, or had a period where they used one of those with some regularity, than someone who hasn't. Now if seventeen year old me, working part time in Tesco in 2011 could access those like I could find an irn bru in Glasgow, then you have to amplify that by one thousand for nineteen year old Louis in this massive boyband and in the music industry. that is as true today as it was then. Alcohol and drug use is such a part of touring and music industry that you cannot de-link those, it is an incredibly stressful industry. On top of that, alcohol and drug use is more likely to turn into addiction where they are already dealing with trauma or mental health or any other vulnerabilities.

What I also want to be clear about is that I don't think we have enough to know if he has personally experienced addiction (though Louis has undoubtedly had experience of addiction with those around him both personally and professionally). I've not seen enough to suggest either way and I think it is daft to think we know enough to make that call, or that we should.

My biggest issue is, and will always be, that the approach fandom takes to alcohol and drug use, helps no-one. All it does is pass judgement which adds to existing stigma and shame, this idea that drinking or drug use is some horrible harmful choice leads to people feeling isolated, and that isolation deprives people of access to resources - how do fans think that this approach would support anyone? As usual though, my biggest concern is the other people who absorb this from fans and then internalise it and/or send it back out into the world.

So why do I think fans react this way? I think fans are projecting, I think fans would like to be able to control Louis' life and when they disagree with the way in which Louis is navigating his own life they use this 'concern' over his health or choices in a manner that is manipulative and shaming.

I'm not gonna lie, Louis referring to his queer fans or the fact the he has them as "weird" would be pretty disheartening. one thing was to do that in 2014 around the great gay war, with so many indicators that they were actively fighting. another is to do this now, in 2023. and even a straight artist not for one second to consider his lyrics could resonate with queer fans regardless of larry would be a bit shitty. I'm just saying that whatever he says is gonna be VERY hard to believe he was forced to. And if he openly shits on Harry it's safe to say his career - as the chance of 1D ever reunite even for a quick photo - is over.

well I absolutely agree that he will not have been 'forced' to say anything that he says in this movie. And I hear where you are coming from, but I just think the catastrophizing is unnecessary. First of all, we have ONE (1) almost certainly made up and definitely purposefully shit stirring anon (and a slow news day) to thank for all this discourse, we have no idea yet what will be in the movie, and it is always weird to me that people are so ready to believe the worst when I, personally, feel like Louis always comes through for me and gives me the BEST. I can completely imagine a scenario in which Louis says he thinks it's weird that so many queers feel inspired by him and it makes me want to hug him forever- because I think he does find it weird and remarkable. It makes me think of that one 1D days receipt where someone said they met him on the street and told him he inspired them as a gay and he was like "I don't see how with the way things are but that means a lot." I think that was probably made up, but also it rings true to me, I feel like he does find it wild that with the public face of everything we still are here and love him so much and see what we do in him and think he's brave. As for the Harry thing, anything he says about him will be taken wrong and distorted and picked on by everyone, if he says anything at all less than "he's my husband and has never done anything wrong in his entire life he is perfect" people will say he's "shitting on Harry"; but that said, Louis is an intelligent media trained person, why are people seriously debating whether he's gonna get on screen and talk shit about Harry Styles?! also literally when in Louis' entire life has he ever said one single bad thing about Harry come on It's not fucking realistic and that alone should tell you that that anon either made all that up or it's just a really bad interpretation of whatever was actually said because the person, like everyone else around here, was so busy expecting the worst that they couldn't just chill and listen to Louis. He’s also, and this is the clincher for me, not ever been useful to Harry. He’s not a natural musical talent. (Neither is Harry particularly but you know what I mean; he’s got better.) He didn’t have connections. Louis doesn’t bring anything to Harry’s table.//

It feels so unfair to even read this. I’m sorry but I highly disagree. First of all, I think it’s important to view their private lives and their careers separately. Harry does link himself so talented and great experienced people in the industry to take advantage from their advice and knowledge, yes. And Louis, I feel like, is more about surrounding himself with good people that he’s friends with in the first place and that he feels comfortable around. I think they are indeed very different in the way they work and push their music careers. I think when it comes to Louis and Harry as private people I doubt Harry would stop staying in touch with someone because he doesn’t benefit from that person career wise. That doesn’t make much sense.

Apart from that, it’s simply not true Louis never brought anything to Harry’s table. Especially in the early days when Harry wasn’t as confident in his own skin and his talent Louis was there to support him whenever he could. There are so many moments you can watch in interviews where Louis goes out of his way to show Harry his support. May it be the famous “painted nails make Harry beautiful” conversation, the sweet “I have never seen you in a dress before” or that time when Harry kinda added something to what Louis said before (L: “the best kind of song for us to skate to is probably shaggy it wasn’t me”, H:” that was like uh..that was like a telepathic thing..”) idk what interview that was. And the other boys continued taking and Louis just said to Harry “hey, that’s cute”. Or when they were on twitter live chat (H: “Who am i? L:”Whoever you want”). Louis gifted Harry cute birthday cards that were like little essays to express his appreciation for Harry. That’s just a few things that come to my mind now, there a probably many more. They may be small but they are very telling about the way Louis treated Harry in general and how supportive and protective he actually was about him even in those little moments. And he still supports him to this day which you can tell if you just pay a little attention. So to sum it up Louis has brought a lot to the table and that was helping Harry to find himself and to be himself. And that’s very essential for the Harry we can see today. He is unique, confident and does all the things he wants to do which is being creative and colorful in his clothing, the exuberant dancing and being confident about his sexuality. I feel like Harry is so much more carefree when it’s comes to other peoples opinions about the way he expresses himself. He is free in that regard. I don’t think he is completely freed from doubts and I still think he probably cares a lot how he’s perceived and whether or not people like him. But it doesn’t stop him anymore nor does it have a bad impact on his performance.

Louis was always the person that supported him, regardless. And in all those years I never saw even the slightest sign of jealousy or resentment towards Harry. I can’t say the same about people like Liam. And Harry needs people like him in his life that aren’t just there to make money with and through him. He can be close to Jeff all he wants but it’s still a connection that brings both individuals a lot of money. And that has an impact on that relationship, whether you like it or not. Harry and Louis don’t have an arrangement like that. Louis probably doesn’t give a fuck how much or how less successful Harry is or how popular he is or how well liked he is by the general public. And I think the same goes for Harry’s family and friends. And I think we don’t get to see much of Harry’s connection to them bc it’s kept private, as it should.

Also. And I’m sorry this is very long. But Louis is a very talented musician. One direction would be nowhere without Louis being the one who was credited for almost all hits 1D has ever put out. He is limited in his voice. But his voice is unique and it gave 1D an interesting tone which was needed to make them sound not boring but just great. Louis is a natural talented songwriter, it’s stupid to deny that. And his personality was a huge advantage for Harry to grew up with and learn from. Harry could learn many things from Louis. For example, speaking up for himself, taking yourself time when needed, drawing boundaries, being a little sassy and not always the people pleaser. I wouldn’t necessarily claim this is all something Harry has taken over by now bc I definitely don’t see that being the case. But that’s just what comes to my mind when thinking about all the thing Louis has about himself that Harry could benefit from.

They thought the poor deserved to stay poor because they were lazy and/or undeserving of fortune.

Orphans would remain orphans even after adoption and were often regarded as intruders and outsiders. An adopted lower class orphan could never be associated with the rich family that adopted them. Adopted orphans could be abandoned and were often subject to harsher punishments and less care. Around 60% of the criminals were estimated to be orphans because of their situation.

They literally shoved naked toddlers up hot soot filled chimneys to clean them leading them to develop cancer and other terminal diseases. Many of these kids would sometimes get stuck in the chimneys and people would try to smoke them out by lighting a fire under them. Sometimes they'd have to leave the stuck child there because it was too hard to get them out and let them die there. The nobility and the master sweeps threw a massive hissy fit when the practice was abolished and actually continued the practice till very very recently. Oh and the kids literally slept with the same rag blanket they used to collect the chimney dirt during the day.

The Andover Workhouse Scandal- the workers were so starved and underpaid they ate the animal bones they were supposed to be crushing.

The fucking Two Penny Hangover- a sleeping arrangement for the poor where you slept hanging on a rope for 2 pennies completely exposed to the elements and they woke you up by untying the rope on one end and letting you crash face first into the floor.

Or you could sleep in the 4 penny coffin if you managed to have enough to spare.

The Poor Law Amendment of 1834. Oh how do we fix poverty? Why, by getting those lazy homeless bastards off their assess and forcing them to do gruelling absolutely awful work at warehouses for bare minimum wages and then when they can't pay off the loans and debts, by tossing the entire family into prisons and running them into the ground with work and little food.

Somewhat less related but Ignaz Semmelweis went insane because he was mocked and attacked for insisting that the victorian doctors actually wash their hands before performing child births after working at the morgue even though the doctors were practically causing a large number of pregnant women to die due to sepsis.

Seriously, read any Charles Dickens or Thomas Hardy book and you'll see absolutely how disgusting so many of the upper and middle class people were.

I loved the way the magic and technology in this fic intersected in such a unique way and the way the world was built was extraordinary!

You don’t speak a word of it, or someone’s going to kill you, and we can’t let that happen.” * a dystopian au in which harry, an ex-soldier who’s escaped from his government run camp, accidentally stumbles across the biggest rebel movement in the country, and louis, one of the rebellion’s mysterious leaders who appears to hate him, seems to simultaneously have an obsession with keeping him alive. or: harry is wanted for treason, niall hasn’t changed in four years, liam is always smiling, and louis is angry. like, really angry.

- The plot of this is just *chef’s kiss* in so many ways!  I love the way the characters interact with each other and I’m weak for Niall and Harry’s friendship in this.

This just came out in the most recent Big Bang (that’s still on going so you should definitely check that out) and this fic is so amazing!  I think it does a great job of just really immersing you in the world the characters exist in.  Love After the End of the World is also a Soulmate AU and I love the way those parts come together.  It also has an amazing prologue called PROMETHEUS RISING (M 5k) that I enjoyed immensely set in the same world!

“Come with us,” Tommo says, stopping at the other end of the gymnasium, near the doors. “Don’t let them make you suffer any longer. Come with us, and be human.”

   Before Harry has even finished thinking it through, he’s on his feet, gaining the attention of every single person in the gymnasium. What has he got to lose, anyway?

   Or, Harry is born into a cult in a post-apocalyptic world, and Louis is the leader of the rebel group tasked with the mission of shutting them down. Together, they make a rather effective team.

This fic does a great job of making you feel like you’re experiencing with the characters, like I could practically smell what the characters were smelling!  The world it’s set in is so cool and the entire fic feels so well thought out and everything is so consistent!

In a world where memories are used as currency, Louis will do anything it takes for Harry to get better.

I loved the idea behind this. Like the entire world is so brilliantly done! And it was all based on ONE word (because of the wordplay challenge).  Even though it’s set in a different world everything feels so grounded and realistic and I really really like that about it.

In this fic the characters motivations are so clear (to the reader) and I love how it goes from Louis accidentally sort of, kind of, kidnapping Harry to them becoming friends then more.  I also love how no matter where they are the fic has a real sense of place. This is part 1 of landscapes of war.  The entire series is really good!

Who Painted the Moon Black by throughthedark (E 95k) Locked

   “People died,” Harry whispers so quietly Louis strains to hear. “People died, and I killed some of them. How does life just go on after something like that?”

   Louis shakes his head. “I don't know. It just does.”

   Hunger Games AU where Louis Tomlinson is district six's victor from the 69th Hunger Games and Harry Styles is district seven's victor from the 72nd Hunger Games.

This fic is a hunger games AU that both people who have and haven't read/watched the Hunger Games can enjoy. I like how it explores the world of the Hunger Games in a way that isn’t explored in the Hunger Games canon.  It’s really intense (like the E is for the darker themes and violence) and I enjoy it a lot.  There is a happy ending (as the author assures in the tags) and I really enjoy all the struggles that the characters go through.

Nobody Marks You by graceling_in_a_suit @graceling-in-a-suit​ (T 33k)

“The plan is: we’re gonna put on a play. Now, I see some doubtful faces–” Louis looked around and found zero doubtful faces. Liam looked intrigued, Zayn looked bored, and Harry looked scarily blank. “But this is what’s happening. We’re gonna do some fucking acting, we’re gonna perform our hearts out, and we’re not going to think about anything else. The past, the future; none of it. All we’re going to think about is... “ Niall trailed off, eyeing the bookshelf to his left. He closed his eyes and reached a hand out towards it, running his fingers over the covers before pulling a book out at random. “William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.”

This is one of my absolute favorite fics.  I just love the way the characters interact and they way the story is told.  It’s nonlinear so you jump around in time and it shows the way the character's relationships change throughout.  I’m a sucker for Much Ado About Nothing and though you don’t need to read it to fully appreciate the fic I think the use of the play throughout is genius.

The thing this fic does really does is showing emotional reactions.  Louis’ inner monologue is so well done and I really like the plot of the story.

I really, really, really, like this plot and the story! The world that the characters exist in is so interesting and I just love the way in which it is a dystopia.

I stumbled on an old post about Zayn and anti Asian racism and it made me think. I know Islamaphobia is something we talk about a lot regarding Zayn and we usually mention racism but I feel like the nuance isn't always talked about enough. Like, even if you take religious background out of it, anti Soutj Asian sentiment in the UK is so common and Zayn grew up in one of the most racially segregated areas in England. Plus, the South Asian experience in the US isn't too good either. I feel like that aspect is so overlooked esp when ppl make the excuse that he's white passing (which we all know he is not) but it really kills me to think about how ppl refuse to acknowledge the racial aspect and insist on whitewashing him. The way they reacted with his Grammy tweets proved that they have whitewashed him in their minds to such as an extent that the significance of his statements went completely over their heads. I see the anti South Asian sentiment in the way his music is criticized, it's their when ppl use racial slurs specific to South Asians against him. The thing that gets me is that British ppl are actually more willing to acknowledge the South Asian aspect more than Americans are. And the post also mentioned the "model minority" myth and how South Asians in the US are held to it. But the model minority myth is in itself inherently racist and we feel the pain of it. I've experienced so much vitriol not just for my religion but also my race and its frustrating how easily ppl here in the US dismiss it because of the model minority bs. Anyway, I'm sorry for the rant lol. I just needed to get this of my chest

no you're right. i've seen a lot of americans (white and otherwise) who look past zayn's desi heritage and focus on his whiteness—as if anyone with a working brain looks at him and sees a white man. his name, his features, his attitude all indicate that he's a person of color. during the 1d days, the efforts to whitewash him went as far as trying to keep him from growing a proper beard—something that's very near and dear to a LOT of brown (especially muslim) men, and something that liam and louis had all the freedom to do. him being of south asian (esp pakistani) descent is enough for people to be vile but it's almost impossible to separate the religious bias since it's so intertwined with his racial identity. whether or not he actively practices islam isn't even the question; it's the fact that he comes from a muslim family that seems to observe muslim traditions and then he went and had a kid with someone who also comes from a muslim father. but anyway to your point—yes people continuously try to erase his brown identity and treat him as they would any white man when its like. just because he doesn't have dark brown skin does not mean that man is white passing. this part in yellow metal sums it up in zayn's own words better i ever could:

I think Harry not having friends his age is strange as well. Even Xander is like Jeff's age so like 36, which is 9 years older than Harry.. Also I thought I read on here a while back that Xander was Jeff's friend? So that would make Harry and him kind of friends by association... He's always had way older 'friends' though which is weird to me because I don't think he was "mature for his age." I 100% do not get that vibe from Harry. Even during the band, he seemed to always cling to/hang out with Cal and Lou as opposed to the other guys or having friends come on tour with him. I know Louis and Liam definitely had their friends along on tour (no clue if andy and liam are still cool).

I honestly think part of it is because he just likes being babied. And that is almost guaranteed to happen when you're the youngest of the group by almost a decade. It's kind of easier to charm doting older people too because they're probably looking at him and going, "aw, i remember when I was that age." I'm sure a lot of his current friends look at him as a little brother of sorts.

I think the other part is he probably has trouble relating to people around his age now. He's definitely not never on social media like he claims, but I also don't think he's up to date with like internet lingo and trends and stuff. He supposedly didn't know what grindr was a little while back which is a bit flabbergasting lol. Then I remember during his first tour someone had a sign or something that said "let me live" and he had no clue what that meant.. so I feel like he's out of touch in way more ways than just one.

Finally, the majority of twenty somethings haven't experienced wealth or opportunities like he has. I feel like most people at his age have been done with university for a while and are starting to get really into the groove of being in their career, with goals of owning homes, being completely financially independent from their fam/parents, owning nicer things, and starting to think about settling down. He's had part of that since he was 16 so I guess it'd be kind of awkward to like talk to him about all the struggles that come with those things bc he's never really had to go through that. I'd personally not know what to even talk to him about bc it's like we live in two different worlds lol

Thanks for coming and clarifying anon - I'm going to be a bit cheeky and reply a little bit. Just because I've heard this put forward as an explanation and it's never made a bit of sense to me - and I'm interested to talk with someone who actually believes it. No obligation to come back.

I find the idea that management wasn't involved really doesn't make any sense with how important relationships within the band were to their branding. In fact the comparison between how it was presented when things were actually bad between band members (Zayn and Harry in 2014 and 2015 or even Louis and Liam early on) and what we saw between Louis and Harry is one of the reasons that I find the idea that what we saw was caused by a break down in their friendship hard to really follow.

I think there is a story you can tell about messy feelings, and Harry's queerness was seen as high risk by everyone involved and things escalating emotionally. There are stories besides the one I tell. But if sometime after April 2012 things did actually get difficult between them, what was saw is not what it would look like.

I also find the idea that it was Harry and Louis interacting that resulted in hatred for Eleanor odd - I don't think that's how it was or how they would have experienced. My impression was that it was as they interacted less that hatred aimed at Eleanor built up.

All Louis could do was stare, wide-eyed at the alpha that he’d left behind so many years ago. “Harry?” His voice felt far away, like it wasn’t him that was speaking. On the other side of the door stood the one man he never thought he’d see again, and maybe the only man he never wanted to see again. A few steps behind him stood Liam and someone else he didn’t recognize, with guns tucked into their front pockets. “I need you to come with me.”

When they’d first come into this lifestyle, the being in their roles in their day to day lives, Louis had struggled with it. He’d found it hard to distinguish between what Harry was doing because he thought he had to, with Louis as his dominant, and what he wanted to do just because of them being partners.

Being ‘twenty-four-seven’ in the traditional sense wasn’t exactly realistic in their life, no matter how much they tried to make it work. They could do small things within their power dynamic, they could try their best to keep it going, but more or less, it wasn’t a constant thing. Harry called it submission with weekends and bank holidays, and it worked for them.

As different as it was from what he expected, no matter what, in the end, it worked for them – and that was all that mattered.

“Can I… take care of you?” Harry had asked, his eyes looking everywhere but at Louis. Louis had just turned twenty-three, they’d been exploring things, doing new things for years, and Harry still managed to surprise him. “Like… Just do things for you like you take such good care of me.”

He has to blink the sleep from his eyes and eventually he just tosses an arm over his face to try and ignore the brightness, but then he realizes that the bed has a decent sized dent in it that forms perfectly to his body and he’s comfortable. It’s – weird. He can’t remember leaving the blinds open, and it wouldn’t have made much sense for Zayn to have opened them, either, but he doesn’t think about it. Maybe he just hadn’t realized that he’d had such a nice bed when he’d fallen asleep.

After a moment, he groans and takes his arm away from his eyes and – wait. This is – this is not his hotel room. This is a bedroom.

That made terrible things happen to that person.
