Half an oyster shell demonstrating pearl shell button manufacture, circa 1875-1885

This object is part of a collection which illustrates how pearl shell was made into pearl buttons in Sydney in the 1930s. The display was given to the Museum by The Pearlbutton Manufacturing Company of Foster Street, Sydney, in 1933.

Pearl divers in places such as Thursday Island, Broome and Port Darwin harvested the Golden Lip pearl shell, (Pinctada maxima), from which the buttons were made. The shell was shipped to the Sydney factory for production. After cutting the button shaped pieces from the shell, the 'blanks' were then split to an even thickness, an operation performed by hand and one requiring considerable judgement and skill.

Buttons made from pearl shell were valued because they were durable and retained their lustre unaffected by washing. After World War II, plastics replaced pearl shell as the preferred material for buttons.

The Torres Strait supplied over half the world demand for pearl shell in the 1890s. In addition to buttons, pearl shell was used for cutlery, hair combs, jewellery, decorative objects and inlay for furniture. The Powerhouse Museum collection includes a variety of objects made from pearl shell.

(it takes like 2 seconds its ez peasy i promise lmao). I have plenty of codes so don’t feel like you cant participate if you dont have an account hdhd

-PLEASE only enter using one account. I know tumblr is funky and you can like make a morbillion different sideblogs, im relying on the honor system here… I don’t wanna make a rule like ‘if your oldest post isnt older than a week, you cannot enter’ cause i know sometimes people just. dont post. lmao. and that wouldnt be fair to them. I want everyone to have an equal chance, don’t ruin it for everyone else by entering multiple times……please… i beg of thee…

-I don’t really have a strict design ownership terms of service. basically just dont use my designs to spread hate that’s all i ask. idc if you resell or trade or change up the design or whatever just. just dont be a jerk about it. Do you hate spoons?

Me too.

I mean, how are you supposed to get the last bit of soup or milk out of the bowl? And so many of them are umcomfy and fit poorly in your mouth too.

But despair not! for I have contrived a solution!

Meet the Noops!

The Noops is the ideal spoon replacement, perfect for all ages and abilities.

The name of the Noops comes from the soon-obsolete object it replaces. Simply ‘spoon’ in reverse, it shows how backwards and problematic spoons are in comparison.

The most striking aspect of the Noops is likely the sponge in place of the bowl of a spoon, and it serves to solve many issues with traditional spoons.

The porous material is excellent for absorbing every last drop of soup, broth, or milk from a bowl. Once in the mouth, the sponge easily releases the delicious liquid when compressed by the tongue.

Additionally, the soft material is comfortable and compressible enough to fit mouths of all shapes and sizes.

For children, the elderly, and folks with compromised mobility, spoons can pose a risk for spilling. Not only does this create countless messes, but can also cause serious burns from hot soup. Noopses mitigate that risk by containing the liquid until safely in the mouth.

The sponge is specifically shaped and angled for comfort and usability. Tasty chunks, whatever delicious morsels they may be, sit comfortably on top of the Noops’s sponge.

In contrast the boring, old-fashioned, metal handle of most spoons, a Noops’s handle is bright and fun. Made of plastic, they would come in a variety of fun colours, as well as a sleek black for those with more refined tastes.

The thick, round handle is easy for all to grasp, from young children to the elderly to disabled people. Furthermore, the angle also makes the Noops easier to hold.

Known as the “Lady of Ill Fortune,” this untitled piece from the estate of the late Emilio Lambrusco has since been passed from dealer, to purchaser, to dealer again. While little is known about the painting in actuality, murky rumors around the piece suggest it portrays Lambrusco’s wife, allegedly in the middle of predicting his death. 1905-1915.
