On the Mend - Ch 1: Not Today
No Outbreak Joel Miller x Female Reader
Read this on AO3 | Masterlist
Summary: You were having a really, really bad day in the midst of the scorching Austin summer, and seeing your ex boyfriend, Joel Miller, is the last thing you need.
Word count: 829
A/N: (EDIT 09/17/2023) Okay so I heard ya'll! LMAO and decided to turn this into a mini-series. Not sure exactly how things will play out for these two, but I've written a part 2 and decided to call this mini-series On the Mend. LOL hope you like it. This is a one-shot for now, not sure if and how to continue this. I just got this idea recently and wanted to write it.
Tumblr media
The merciless sun bore down as she parked her car. The Austin summer had been relentless, and today, it seemed as if even the universe was conspiring against her.
It had been a thoroughly miserable day. Work had been a disaster; she'd spent hours redoing half of a project her co-worker had botched because she was still hungover from the previous night.
The Texas summer heat, relentless and unforgiving, only added to her misery. As if fate had a personal grudge against her, she realized she'd left her house keys on her office desk when she was already halfway home.
She sighed in defeat and turned her car around to retrieve them. All of this was compounded by her lingering morning sickness, a term she found deceptive as it had resurfaced with a vengeance upon entering her third trimester. She had naively believed she had bid it farewell for good when she'd crossed into the second trimester.
"Whoever called it morning sickness should be shot for lying," she grumbled, attempting to quell the rising nausea that threatened to surface.
Dressed in biker shorts and an oversized t-shirt she kept in her car for emergencies, she got out and beelined to the frozen aisle for a popsicle stick and savored the brief respite offered by the melting ice cold treat.
She sighed in relief and grabbed a pushcart. Her only mission in the store was to grab some Oreos, pickles, and frozen pizza to satisfy her cravings that were so intense, she literally cried in the car on her way over.
As she rounded a corner in the store, she was suddenly face to face with the last person she wanted to see: Joel Miller.
Great. She thought to herself. Couldn't have been on a better day.
Ah, Joel fucking Miller.
The man who had once been the love of her life.
The same man who had taken her on the most memorable first date she'd ever experienced, and had filled the past five years of her life with the kind of joy she'd never known before.
But this was also the man who made it clear to her months ago, after five whole years of being together and living together for three, that he has no plans of marrying her and having a family with her.
She and Joel were arguing at the time when he said it.
--
In the midst of their emotional clash, she couldn't help but speak her mind, her frustration boiling over.
"Joel," she began, her voice trembling with pent-up feelings, "if you get mad at every damn little thing, what's going to happen if we were married? That's not the life I want, and it's not the husband I need."
Joel's eyes flashed with anger as he retorted, "Of course it’s not! And who told you I was going to marry you?" His words cut like a knife, and she felt her heart shatter into pieces.
"We never talked about it, what put the idea into your head?" he continued, his tone harsh and unyielding.
Her jaw went slack in shock, as tears welled up in her eyes as she choked back her emotions.
"But I thought we--," she whispered, her voice barely audible, she couldn't even continue her thoughts when Joel cut her off.
"No." He barked. "You knew from the start that Sarah is my priority. Always was and always will be. I'm not going through the whole marriage thing again." And have our hearts broken all over again when you realize that we're not what you want, he wanted to add. But instead he allowed the silence to linger.
Silent tears slipped from her eyes but she did not respond.
Instead she stood up and went into the closet and started packing. So be it, she told herself as she zipped the last of her bags before going into the bathroom to hastily shove her toiletries into another bag.
She stopped when she pulled one of the lower drawers open. The positive pregnancy test sticks under her box of tampons glared at her, and for a brief moment she contemplated telling Joel. But when she heard the front door slam shut, she pulled herself together and shoved the sticks in the bag as well.
--
That was seven months ago and she hasn't seen nor heard from Joel since.
Their eyes met for a moment before his gaze fell upon her very round baby bump. Acting on instinct, she hastily placed her handbag in the shopping cart, a futile attempt to hide it from him, though it didn't do much given the fact that she looked like she had tucked an entire watermelon under her shirt.
She grimaced, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. When she locked eyes with him once more, she began walking backwards, her eyes not leaving him and before he could say anything, she had rounded the corner and all he heard was, “Nope. Not today!”

Dabbles: Pedro Pascal: His Bunny
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pedro has yet another full set day of shots to take. The night before, you had snuggled up close to his side while he was reading a book. Glasses on the edge of his nose, and still he was squinting to read the words on the paper.
"Pedro, can I come with you tomorrow?" You asked, your voice timid and shy. You didn't really ask for many things when it came to anything. You let Pedro take the wheel. Fancy dinners were always picked by him, movies, and anything else you did together.
Pedro closed the book, his thumb being used as the current bookmark. "Of course you can come, honey. I just don't think you'll have much fun." Pedro never wanted to push you towards something that you wouldn't enjoy.
"Why are you askin' anyways, baby?" He asked, curious about what was going on in your head. You shrugged your shoulders, the white bunny getting stuffed further between your arm and the sheets.
"I just… you are always gone, and I never get to see you. I just miss you." You managed to get out in a whimpering breath. Pedro set the book on the side table, forgetting to tag the page he was on; right now, you are the only thing he sees.
He struggled at first to get you to shift into his lap. Your head eventually comes to rest on his chest. His large hands combed through your hair. "Sweetheart, I'm sorry I'm always gone. I promise I think about you all day while at work." Pedro whispered into your hair. You snuggled further into his warm chest.
The following day, it's way too early for you, but Pedro wakes up a little earlier than usual, getting into his regular routine before waking you gently and getting you dressed in something nice. And walking down the stiars with you right in front of him. He stops at the little coffee shop you love while you dig through your bag.
He had put a few of your favorite hobbies into it while waiting for you to finish getting ready. The car clock reads nearly seven in the morning, and as you dig around your bag, you find your phone and book in both. "I grabbed a few of your things before we left. Do you want a coffee or something else?" Pedro asks; you yawn and point towards the coffee on the drive-thru screen.
Pedro's favorite thing about you is being able to care for you. He genuinely enjoys being there for you, doing whatever you need him to do. Maybe it's just that he loves being around you. Being with you makes his heart soar and his cheeks burn from smiling too much.
You do exactly what you usually do at home, reading by the closest window and the reruns of old cooking shows flutter across the TV scene, that is, until it's lunch and Pedro comes back to the trailer. "I brought some food, bunny," Pedro calls out as he walks into the trailer. Your stomach churns at the smell of whatever the styrofoam containers hide.
Lunch goes by way too quick, but Pedro still gets his time to snuggle with you, kissing up and down your neck and jawline. You giggle with joy and at the tingling feeling of his scratchy beard. The knock at the trailer door pulls Pedro away from you way too soon, but you deal with it. Putting away the trash and cleaning up the area to pull out the book you've already re-read about ten times.
Pedro comes back to the most beautiful scene. Nothing beats this; no movie scene he's been a part of or anything he's watched. You snuggled into yourself, book laying limp in your hands. You're in the same place he left you nearly four hours ago.
Pedro pulls out his phone, snapping pictures of you sleeping. Pedro would never have been able to fall asleep in that position like you have, but there's something so cute about how you just get comfy no matter where you are. "Bunny, are you awake?" He tests the waters. When you don't respond, he takes a few steps closer to you, shaking you gently as he calls out another cute nickname in other air. "Baby?" His voice has dropped a little, giving it a roughness that typically has you awake and yearning for his attention.
When Pedro doesn't get a response from anything, he decides it's best to move you from the kitchen table cushion to the bed at the back of the trailer. He figures that you'll be fine if he wraps his arms around you protectively. He does precisely that. Stuffing his phone back into his pocket and grabbing you from under your knees and your back. Pulling you up close to his chest. You weigh nothing to him as he walks the two of you to the back of the trailer.
Your white-socked feet hang just out of reach of the blanket. Little bows and fringes of white lace around your ankles. Has Pedro rubbing your heels as he sets you down on the bed. "My little bunny, so cute," Pedro whispers to you as he brushes stray hairs out of your face. Pedro shuffles out of his jeans and throws off his shirt to climb next to you. He kisses the crown of your head and pulls you close to his chest before falling asleep.

The days following Joel's unexpected visit were a whirlwind of emotions for her. She couldn't shake the memory of seeing him standing on her doorstep, bruised and broken, pleading for a chance to make amends. It stirred a chaotic mix of feelings within her, and she found herself torn between her love for him and her resentment for the pain he had caused.
It didn't help that Joel had sent her texts simply asking her how she is and if they could see each other again. All of which she left on read. Still unsure if she still wants Joel back in her life.
Days turned into a relentless march toward her impending maternity leave.
She buried herself in work, taking on overtime to secure extra pay and ensure her coworkers wouldn't be burdened in her absence. It was a way to stay busy, to distract herself from the storm of thoughts and emotions raging within. Between work, her doctor's appointments and the preparations for the nursery, her days were filled to the brim.
Too much so that one hot afternoon, as the sun blazed down on her car during her drive home from work, she felt an unexpected, sharp pain in her lower abdomen. It caught her off guard, and she winced in discomfort, her grip on the steering wheel tightening. She tried to dismiss it as just another round of pregnancy discomfort, but the pain persisted and grew stronger with each passing moment.
With a trembling hand, she reached for her phone and dialed her doctor's number. As she explained her symptoms, the doctor advised her to head straight to the hospital, suspecting it might be preterm labor. Panic coursed through her veins as she obeyed the instructions.
Rushing through the hospital doors, she tried to remain calm despite the escalating pain. The nurses quickly took her to a room, and she was placed under observation, calling her emergency contact as they worked on her.
---
Joel had just picked up Sarah from her soccer practice after work, and they were heading home with Tommy in tow when his phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and his brows furrowed in confusion at the number he did not recognize.
"Quit bickering, you two!" Joel said hushing the two who were arguing about something as he answered the call.
“Hello?” His blood ran cold as he listened to the nurse on the other end explain the situation.
Without a second thought, Joel made a swift U-turn, the tires screeching on the pavement.
"Jesus Christ, Joel!" Tommy exclaimed.
"Dad, what's going on?" Sarah asked worriedly.
Joel's knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel as he navigated through traffic, his mind racing. "She's at the hospital,” his voice tight. " Somethin's wrong."
---
The hospital felt like a blur as Joel rushed through the corridors, his heart pounding with each step. When he arrived at her room, he was met with a mix of relief and surprise. She lay in the hospital bed, her face etched with pain, and when her eyes met his, she looked astonished.
"Joel? What are you doing here?" she managed to say between breaths.
Joel's worry didn't subside, but he couldn't help but smile faintly. "I'm still listed as your emergency contact," he explained, his voice filled with a mixture of concern and tenderness.
Her brow furrowed in realization, and she seemed flustered. "I'm so sorry, Joel. You shouldn't have come, I meant to change that."
Joel shook his head, his eyes never leaving her. "You don't need to do that," he replied softly. "I'm here because I want to be. I want to be here for you and the baby..."
She blinked away the tears and took a deep breath. "Joel, I appreciate that you want to help, but I've managed this far on my own, and I can handle it. You don't need to feel obligated."
Joel nodded, his expression filled with understanding. "I know you're strong and capable, and I know so well that you can do it on your own. But I also know how tough it is to care for a newborn alone. I've been there, and I don't want you to go through it if I can help."
Their eyes locked in a silent battle of wills. She wanted to prove her independence, to show Joel that she could handle everything just fine on her own, that she doesn't need him in her life as much as he didn't want her to be a constant in his.
Before she could respond, the intern entered the room, donned in a white coat and a warm smile.
"Good evening," the intern greeted kindly, glancing between the two of them.
"I've reviewed your test results, and it appears that what you experienced was indeed a false alarm. This can sometimes happen due to stress or other factors, especially during the later stages of pregnancy."
Relief washed over her, and she nodded gratefully. "So I can go home tonight?"
"Absolutely!" The intern continued, "I also called your OB and she advised that you be on bed rest with bathroom privileges until your next routine checkup next week."
"Thank you, doc. I'll make sure she's well taken care of." Joel answered for her.
After providing some more instructions, the intern excused herself from the room. "I'll have someone process your discharge papers," she said as she closed the door behind her, leaving the two of them alone.
Joel turned his attention back to her, his determination unwavering.
"I'm comin’ home with you." he insisted, his voice soft yet firm. "Let me take care of you, even if it's just until your next doctor's appointment."
She hesitated, her desire for independence warring with the growing realization that accepting Joel's help might be the best course of action.
"I don't want to burden anyone, Joel," she confessed, worry etching lines on her face. “Besides, what about Sarah? Tommy can’t handle stuff all on his own, and you both have work.”
“You don’t worry ‘bout all that now.” he assured her. “Tommy and Sarah can manage without me for the next couple of days, in fact you can ask them yourself.” He smiled lightly.
“What?” Her eyes widened in surprise. "Tommy and Sarah are here?" she asked, her voice filled with longing.
“They’re, uh, outside.” He smiled sheepishly.
“Do-do you think Sarah would want to see me?” She asked him softly, feeling unsure and a little embarrassed about basically ghosting a 10 year old who considered her as a mother-figure.
“Of course, darlin’.” Joel said, “I’d go get them if you want.” She nodded and Joel's smile grew wider as he walked out of the room to call in Tommy and Sarah.
When they entered the room, her heart nearly burst with joy. Sarah squealed in excitement at the sight of her, and they shared a warm hug, both happy to be reunited after too long apart.
Sarah was brimming with curiosity. "Mom, how are you? Is the baby okay?"
She smiled down at the little girl, touched by her concern. "I'm doing much better now, sweetie, and the baby's just fine." Suddenly Sarah started sniffling.
“I’m so happy to see you again.” Fat tears began to roll down her plump cheeks. “Please, mom, come home…” The little girl pleaded.
“Sarah–”Joel started but was cut off.
“It’s okay, Joel.” She assured him, clinging tightly to Sarah.
Joel stepped closer, a comforting presence beside them. "Sarah, your mom needs to rest for a little while," he explained gently, his hand resting on her shoulder. "But maybe when she's a little better, she may want to hang out..." Joel's statement came out as a question directed at her and she nodded in reply.
"That's absolutely right, sweetie," she chimed in, her voice soft and warm. "I just need to get better so that your baby sister can keep growing stronger before she arrives."
"She?" The three Millers asked in unison.
“Oh…” A faint blush crept onto her cheeks as she smiled. "Yes, Sarah is going to have a baby sister."
After a few more moments of heartfelt exchanges, they reluctantly said their goodbyes to Sarah and Tommy, assuring them that they would see each other soon. As the door closed behind them, she sighed deeply, feeling the weight of the emotional encounter.
Joel turned his attention back to her, his gaze soft with a hint of uncertainty.
"I'm so sorry," he began, his voice carrying a tone of regret, "I didn't mean to make plans for you and Sarah—"
"It's alright, Joel," she interjected, offering a faint smile. "I truly want to see Sarah again. I think I owe her an apology and an explanation." She admitted, and he responded with a grateful nod. "Thank you," he breathed out.
She absentmindedly stroked her swollen belly; the contractions had ceased, but she still felt uncomfortable.
"So, uh..." Joel started, his hand nervously rubbing his neck, "does that mean you're okay with me stayin' over for a couple of days?"
"Yes," she nodded, "Thank you, Joel. You really don't have to, though. I can ask—"
"No, no," Joel interrupted, his voice earnest. "Please, I want to... I want to take care of you and the baby."
A brief silence settled in the room, interrupted only when a nurse popped her head through the door with the paperwork.
Soon after, they found themselves walking to her car, with Joel behind the wheel, driving her home.
