I'm putting this under a readmore because I absolutely refuse to force people to read r*ta o*a discourse against their will. but the tl;dr version of this is: yes, she's an insufferable person. yes, I think he's happy with her. yes, I have recently become very parasocial. yes, this is embarrassing.

Firstly tbh I think 'problematic' is a rough term, but in short, yeah, rita (we're on a first name basis now apparently) has a long history of career success based on blackfishing. She also broke lockdown rules in Nov 2020 by paying a restaurant £5k not to report her so she could have her 30th birthday (lol. except it's not funny is it it's serious). People also find her general career annoying but honestly I don't think there's anything wrong with doing whatever you can to be in front of the camera because, like, that's her job, so let's set that aside.

I unfortunately was susceptible to the Rita Ora propaganda when this interview came out in the Independent and started to kinda...like her. In the way you like your friend's messy cousin whose drama brings joy into your life. It helps that I am obsessed with her sister Elena, who seems to be her manager, handler, PR, publicist, and best friend all wrapped into one and is literally doing that better than like...the entirety of the Marvel team. "Why is Rita Ora here what is she even famous for" IT WAS ELENA. I would also bet money it was Elena who organised the damage control Independent interview and honestly, props. Excellent mopping up after the Covid fiasco. I want to study her in a lab etc.

It really confused people when Taika and Rita started dating (late Feb 2021, if you want to know the timeline so you don't have to be crazy like me and investigate it), but my hot take is actually that this is totally unsurprising and makes sense wrt what we know about both of them & their personal lives. Now THIS is when it gets really parasocial. You asked.

They have a similar group of friends - they were friends for 4 years before "complicating things" (absolutely deranged way of putting it, Taika, thank you) - and a lot of overlapping circles. They're both loud and ambitious with a tendency to overcompensate for nerves by just getting louder and more annoying, they're both party people who drink and dance and [redacted redacted]. Taika had just gone through his (now officially self-confessed! everyone say thank you Lie Detector video) 2018-2020 mid-life crisis and was filming Love & Thunder. CRUCIALLY, they had similar childhood experiences based around culture shock and forced assimilation - if you're reading this you probs know about Taika's experiences, but the tldr of the Oras is that they fled Former Yugoslavia just before the war and moved to London. Both Elena and Rita (first name basis here is killing meeee btw) have talked about the difficulty they had in adjusting (though Rita was just a baby). The Ora management team and inner circle still to this day consists mostly of the children of fellow refugees who moved to London at the same time and are childhood friends of the sisters. Elena stepped into the management role at 18 because their parents didn't have a good enough grasp of English to keep Rita safe in the industry. SO: broadly familiar childhood experiences on both sides, plus a tendency to keep close to friends and people you trust, etc etc.

In terms of them being good together - I literally don't know these people, obviously, I've just been obsessed for two months so I have a disturbing amount of knowledge in terms of what they choose to show us. In short: they seem happy. They seem to want to do similar things - go to shows, be papped, go to parties, get shit-faced, travel, and be domestic. There's this recent picture from the Dior show where she looks so happy it made me physically recoil from the screen.

Rita also talks in the Elena Propaganda Coup interview about how she has been in consistent therapy since she was fifteen because of crippling anxiety and panic attacks, and Taika recently mentioned in the Wired Autocomplete interview that he's now in therapy ("Who is Taika Waititi? Ask my therapist, that's what we're trying to figure out." [everyone who has watched Boy 2010 breathes a sigh of relief]).

FINALLY FINALLY the recent hyperspecific leak to the Mail and the Sun (not linking because I refuse to give them clicks but..) about their probable engagement and low-key wedding reads very much to me like a strategic planting - either because they knew the story was about to leak and wanted to get ahead of the story, or because they were throwing the press a bone in the hopes that they'd be left alone for the actual wedding. ELENA STRIKES AGAIN. The fact that the Mail keeps referring to Taika as "Rita Ora's fiance" (scream....so funny on so many levels) without either team issuing a denial is half a confirmation. Taika did fully dodge the question on This Morning which made me yell bc fuck Philip Schofield but is also NOT A DENIAL. Either way the idea that they're having a tiny wedding at some point in the near future without wanting it on social media spells happiness to me (not that having a big wedding means you aren't in love. then again this is a post about rita ora I'm cancelled already). Rita obviously wants kids and a big family and everything that entails so this was a fairly predictable move for them (predictable if you are me and Zoe @wolfhalls who seem to be psychic when it comes to Rita/Taika moves. What a useless skill). I just think it's cute I guess.

BUT TO SUM UP. Yes she is insufferable. Yes she's definitely privileged and ignorant. Yes the COVID thing was absolutely stupid and feels like a hugely coked up impulsive move to me. But also yes I think the hate she gets online is totally disproportionate and mostly driven by neckbeard men on reddit and whoever the fuck it is who comments on Deuxmoi, and I also think Taika is an insufferable person too so they match! Kidding I luv him. but also. Tune in next time for the great 2016-2018 PA Scandal Timeline. (KIDDING. I will not be doing that. But you get the point). The Rita that exists in my head is my best pal the girls who get it get it the girls who gornt...gornt. Thanks for reading.

Omgeee!!!!!!!! Slow and steady sequel? for real? you don’t know how that makes me happy. 😭😭😭 I remember asking you when i read it in AO3 if there will be a part 2 way back Nov 2020 and you said no cause it was only oneshot. Wow..i can’t believe how time flies. I’m so excited 🥺 I’m sure a lot of your readers are as excited as well.

Lmao I wasn't entirely lying when I said I never planned a part 2 for the story. I always try not to dwell on any thoughts of continuing a one-shot because things can go both ways; (1) as I've mentioned earlier, the second or later parts are often overlooked and don't gain as much attention as the first one, or (2) the story or closure that I offer on the continuation may not leave as much impact as the original has and I might end up not feeling happy about releasing it.

But after a while, and after thinking a lot about the characters, I began playing around with a few rough ideas that I have been getting and I wanted to give something that might give some closure since everyone has been asking about JK and the aftermath of his actions, and I decided, why not? I've been planning and outlining the story, so I might be able to dive into it soon and share it with you guys even if the ending may end up just as another cliffhanger like the first one or leave everyone hanging again lol

Grammy Nominations and Live Shows OH MY!!

LOUIS’ BACK!!! And I don’t mean “oh he liked something on Instagram” or “oh he tweeted about a RHCP concert”, I mean he’s going to be doing a VEEPS LIVESHOW! And so we solve the mystery of the Spotify vids (they were a stage!): a few hours before the announcement, he tweeted, “Hope you’re all doing alright. Exciting stuff coming up!!”, and then left the masses to wonder what could possibly be happening and when. Three anxious hours later: “So excited to announce that I’m getting my band and crew back together to put on a special show for you all that will be streamed December 12 [!!!adkhfkadhfjj!!!] and will be available for 28 hours after. The show will support 5 important causes very close to my heart”. The causes Louis Tomlinson Live From London will support are FareShare (they redistribute food to communities in need), CrewNation (the LiveNation COVID crew fund), StageHand (similar to CrewNation, but UK based), Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, and paying Louis' own touring crew! The tickets go on sale TOMORROW. If you can't afford one, Luke Massie (founder and CEO of Vibe Tickets) is giving funds away on twitter to fans who want to watch the show! “I’ll do my best to help as many of you as I can see him and his amazing crew perform,” he said. Louis has said that there is no cap on the ticket sales, so I’m taking him at his word and hoping that Veeps is prepared for what's about to happen (they're REALLY not lol.)

And that’s not all!! The press release for the show promised “songs from… ‘Walls”...alongside a few surprises” (I - could it - new music????), as well as “an exclusive range of new merchandise” that comes out tomorrow! The merch proceeds will go to the charities listed above. And! The Telegraph published an interview! Louis promises AN UPCOMING NEW ALBUM (“I had basically penciled down a plan before corona took over our lives”). He says again that he wants to move into the KMM style rock sound, “I think there were some songs where I took slightly more risk and owned what I love, saying, this is who I want to be..there is a certain energy in [KMM], in its delivery, in its attitude, that I want to recreate. People are struggling at the moment so I want to create a raucous, exciting atmosphere in my live show, not a somber, thoughtful one.” He says that he wants this next album to be more optimistic, because that is who he is, but new songwriting is HARD during a pandemic: for him (like for all of us), his days have fallen into a routine, and so he has no ‘new experiences’ to draw from. And, once again, Louis brings up John Frusciante and how he “fucking wishes” he could chat with him. Louis - drop your RHCP stan account PLEASE! We also learned that fans were RIGHT in speculating that he’s been in LA recently (though likely not for the reason the Telegraph wants us to think). About his travels, Louis says, “[The spot he goes to] is remote and kind of weird, and I’m going to go there for three days and write. I don’t know why I’m so drawn to it... it’s got some very interesting (peculiar?) locals who live there...it feels like you’re going back in time when you’re there.” ANY COMMENT, @/visiteroda??? And, in a rare look ahead, Louis reveals that he wants to manage an all-women’s rock band playing instruments (hey, friend, you know where women could play instruments? YOUR OWN BAND, MY DUDE! Just a suggestion). He said that his process with Syco had become “challenging and frustrating” because the kinds of artists he wants to develop aren’t “ready-made” - he sees a lot of artists that were “rough and ready” but labels want to see “something that works straight away”. But with Syco dust in the wind he can get back to it: HELL YEAH! The band he’s currently got his eyes on is Fickle Friends (an indie Brighton all-female rock band); he says this is the kind of band he wants to manage, “because there’s no one in that space. And I know eventually if I don’t do it, someone else will!”. Guys, I say this a lot, but really, Louis is about to make some WAVES in that space and I can’t WAIT to see it play. But first the concert, please!

AND!!!!!! Harry has been NOMINATED FOR THREE FUCKING GRAMMYS!! GUYS, HE MADE IT! The categories he is up for are: Best Music Video (Adore You - the TASTE), Best Pop Solo Performance (Watermelon Sugar), and BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM! I know that we’re always like, Grammys mean nothing, and how can we feel otherwise 1D was never nominated, but this is a MILESTONE in his career, and I am so happy to see his work getting the recognition it deserves! There were no nominations for him in the general field this year (artist or record of the year) BUT just you WAIT. Everything that Harry does makes me think that he is gearing up for a very long and successful career and I am. Very Happy for him. And so is everyone else! Harry’s friends, family, colleagues, and labels have all been quick to congratulate him on his well deserved recognition. In other Harry news, we got some stills from an Austrailian movie called “Holding the Man” which bear remarkable similarities to the Golden music video. (Were Harry's Vans really in there as a tribute to the film or did that part just work out very well for him??) The movie and the song don’t have anything in common thematically except being gay, but it really looks like a visual homage to this film (or, my personal theory, a fix-it fic to give it a happy ending!). And! Harry was papped on the DWD set with Florence Pugh again today, in a suit and an opulent background - it’s hard to make out Harry’s face, but I think we can guess that it's beaming in pride, as it should be.

GQ Spain did a piece on Liam’s Hugo capsule, praising it for being “the utilitarian style” (“the star trend of 2020”). They’re very nice about it, and seem to be genuinely interested and like the color scheme of the clothes: “the monocolor look...is an irrefutable argument in men’s clothing”. They also praise the collection for being an example that “you don’t need to spend hours in front of a mirror to dress like the best dressed men on the planet”. All of these were meant to be compliments, I SWEAR! Niall was around on Twitter yesterday, reminiscing about the time when some fans asked Justin Beiber to take pictures of them with Niall, it's true Niall that IS hilarious and also good psychic timing: that's EXACTLY how relevant Justin Beiber should be (yes I AM bitter the Weeknd was ROBBED). He also congratulated Shawn Mendes for his documentary, “So proud of this boy. He’s smashed it and always so humble. Well done to everyone involved.X”. I have not seen this documentary but if there are any more “Camila Cabello orders bananas at sushi restaurants moments” PLEASE let me know!

When I was 1 month into BTS, watching their past contents, I immediately noticed jikook and would keep an eye on them on current contents. after a while I was comparing the old contents with the new ones and there seemed to be a difference. people noticed it and bloggers would brush them off saying they don't have to be all over each other, and to just wait for future content. true enough when Memo 2020 and MOTS came, during the times that I thought they were having a problem, they actually didn't. they said that even before, they had that instances where people thought they were distant then GCFT or official content was released. What do you think? could it be that they were constantly having rough patches? even in LA, if Jimin didn't mention JK was always in his room, I would think they're distant and avoiding each other. Contrast them with the get out of your imagination and ITS talk of tk.even to me I didnt think tk had a problem. when I watch past content I was even surprised they were having an issue that time, even in ITS itself. they didn't seem to have an issue until their 1 on 1.

Yes, some people see them as distant or stuff when others don't. There are some who saw them distant and like something was wrong between them in freaking 2018. The end of 2018 was actually the birth of so many solos pjms because during MAMA Jungkook went to hug and comfort a crying Taehyung and not Jimin, who was also crying. That was right after the almighty Melon Music Awards! Many JM biased jikookers resented JK for that and decided to become solos. Plus other stuff that happened in the end of 2018 with Jimin. I know also that many JK biased jikookers changed their minds about Jimin in 2019, too. And you'd think those were The Best of Times for jikook and jikookers.

I'm totally not like, a paranoid person and I don't have a negative mindset about anything tbh. I'm highly attuned to my own feelings and I'm frankly a bit too intense about honesty. The only time I personally felt like there was detachment between Jimin and JK, it was November 2019 - all through 2020. I could see that they still got along with each other but to me there was nothing else beyond that. I don't wanna repeat myself since I've talked about it so many times lol. I started believing they were together in 2019, so of course my "expectations" from them changed in that year. You don't expect two friends to act the same way as two partners, you know? It's the way you would expect them to be there for each other's birthdays or important events but are like "whatever" if any BTS member doesn't attend. It's the way people say "of courseeee he's there" when Jimin stayed while JK got his stitches removed. You expect that from a partner. It's not even about "expectations" in the correct sense of the word, it's about believing JK and JM are dating and then actually seeing the correlation between what you believe and what you see. So for me it was that during that period I mentioned; I just didn't see them behaving like partners. There was no difference between jikook and any other ship for me. Other ships even seemed closer than jikook while Nov 2019 - 2020 was going on. The only thing that stood out to me was them apparently living together back then. But of course I had and still have no idea what they did when they went back to their place, so while it was GREAT to see them leaving and arriving together like that everytime, I also didnt really know what it actually meant for them. I still dont know, actually.

So, no. I don't think they are/were constantly having rough patches. I think it's probably just as simple as everyone and each one of us having different personalities, going through different stuff in our real lives that might affect how we feel about everything else. Some people might need to constantly see them being okay and like they're "whipped" and tbh it's just who we are. I think there's also the fact that a lot of us are not on the same "timeline" regarding jikook. Some thought that they were dating back in 2018 so when JK, JM's supposed partner, decided to comfort someone else instead of his own crying boyfriend, they changed their minds about jikook. I didn't think they were together when MAMA 2018 happened, so I didn't care about it, I mean, both Tae and Jimin were equal friends to JK in my mind back then. Then 2019 and 2020 came and the times that Jimin cried those years, JK did go to him. And it makes sense for when in my opinion they started seeing hooking up, fooling around, being intimate, whatever you wanna call it.

Jikookers' feelings aside, I think it's hard to say if they're actually going trough something because we see so little of them unless it's like, Bon Voyage or stuff like that, where we see them almost 24/7 and IF they're not actively trying to hide how they're feeling. In New Zealand if you didn't know what JK was going through, you definitely won't notice it from watching Bon Voyage. In the end he says he tried to be happy for the fans watching, but boy was he going through a lot off camera. Sometimes it slips thru the cracks anyways like namjoon saying we can't be too close, or how on edge he was during ITS1.

I mean, another grea example would be their group crisis in 2018. They were considering disbanding in 2018 but nobody. Nobody. noticed that they had problems or thought that something was wrong or realized how much they were going through while the year was going on because they looked really good, they seemed fine, the comebacks were huge, they achieved a lot, they had a bigger tour. Then end of the year came and they said they wanted to disband and how miserable they felt. They released LY: Tear that year and after listening to Outro: Tear everyone was like omg who broke yoongi's heart like this. WELL... Come 2019 and Yoongi says he wrote Outro Tear about the members and the stuff they were going through in 2018 when they wanted to disband. People died.

Then, taekook too how they weren't that close anymore and nobody actually noticed that. They seemed fine.

So... it's a mess lmao. Bottom line is, we don't know anything and we see so little that probably nobody could draw an accurate picture of what they're going through, their real, off cam dynamics and to some extent, about their personalities.

My personal opinion tho, is that Jikook weren't always going through rough patches but they definitely had some, which could be the ones people noticed or could be like, Rose Bowl, for all we know. I think that something as huge as a "break up" would definitely be obvious, tho. But we wouldn't necessarily notice if they like, had an argument because one of them stared at the waiter/waitress for too long. It really comes down to whatever they wanna show/share, and if they want to show and share that they're okay without actually being okay, we will see them as okay.

Good Things in 2019

@theputterer and @the-strongest-stars tagged me in the awesome annual end-of-year Good Things meme! I’ve done this in 2018 & 2017 and always think it’s a fun exercise of both reflection and looking forward.

Oh boy, though, my first thought was, what even happened in 2019? (Looking at a calendar helped! It reminded me of a few things I forgot)

It’s been a Rough Year, friends. Between OCD and basically travelling almost every weekend in the latter half of 2019, I am very much ready for a new year and hopefully a new slate.

But this is about the positives!

Personal

Played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons! I am now officially in two campaigns. This year, I endeavored to recruit more women to play, including the wonderful @allatariel. I play both my beloved cleric, Maritsa (who I’ve been playing her years now) and my new character, Noara, a ranger elf with a red panda familiar (yeah, my DM let me do that for funsies, so I could get an animal sidekick but also still try out the Horizon Walker subclass).

Speaking of red pandas, I accomplished my LIFE GOAL of meeting a red panda face-to-face. I got to feed Harriet at the Cincinnati Zoo for 30 minutes. She was adorable.

Completed all my dental work and had a clean bill of dental health two cleanings in a row!

Attended DC’s Around the World Embassy Day event, always fun

Attended Star Wars night at a local library, where I got to participate in a short demo/lesson on how to fence with a lightsaber!

Attended 50th Anniversary Celebration of Apollo 11 / landing on the moon (dude they projected the rocket on the Washington Monument and it looked so cool)

Returned to the NY Ren Faire and upgraded my ren faire garb

Celebrated at THREE friends’ weddings and got to catch up with old friends I hadn’t seen in awhile

Ate ice cream at the Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Vermont

Went to NYCC for the third year in a row. Got to wear 2 costumes this year: a 1920s flapper interpretation of an occamy and my Endor!Leia costume (repeat of 2017). Learned the True Pain of sewing. Created feather shawl for my occamy costume. Learned the True Pain of crafting.

Celebrated one year anniversary with hubbie down where we got married: visited the museum we got married in and actually got a chance to enjoy the exhibits, went to our favorite brunch place down there, got to check out Fleet Week and tour an aircraft carrier and uh... I think it was a missile cruiser?

Went up to PSU for a women’s hockey game for sister’s birthday (made embarrassing HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign for the cameras); also it was an absolutely wonderful fall drive on the way up there

Got to see The Rise of Skywalker in IMAX at the Smithsonian Air & Space Center with the awesome @allatariel! (thank goodness we had each other to get through that movie lol) also got to reuse my Endor!Leia costume. I did my own braids for the first time ever! (usually my talented sister does them) They looked like braids done by a n00b, but I didn’t care because they were passable and I did them myself and that was a Big Thing for Perfectionist Me (to not just... say screw it and undo it and just. give up. but to just let them be as is)

Worked hard at therapy and self care

Got a Sleep Number bed and holy shit let me tell you. i can actually sleep now.

OH! I almost forgot!!! Started playing Assassin’s Creed! I’ve only ever really played the LEGO Star Wars and Harry Potter video games so like. This was big for me.

Writing

Finally finished Learning Curve. TBH I was a bit shocked that this was in fact the only fic I published in 2019. What a travesty.

However! I have been writing

@allatariel & I sat down, overanalyzed You’ve Got Mail, and drafted up the outline for my in-universe AU, something I’ve been dreaming of starting for years. Have about 4300 words so far.

Just under the wire, I did manage to start my NatGeo AU, which I’ve been dreaming of since my honeymoon in Nov 2018

Started editing/revising my original young adult fantasy novel

Poked a little at my epic fantasy pirate travel novel idea

Books

I read exactly one book, Among the Red Stars, which I enjoyed. It’s about women fighter pilots in Russia in WW2. Inspired by real people.

Music

Saw Panic at the Disco! in concert. I went along with my sister. Not like a huge fan, but they put on a pretty fun show!

Saw Waitress on Broadway!! OH MY GOD. And Sara Bareilles was starring in it. Amazing. I freaking love her music (”How does she know / what a heart sounds like?” gahhh). She was so good, and the show was so good. I literally cried all the way through it just because I was so happy to be there, but also because of the content. Man.

Saw Sara Bareilles again, in concert, in Philly. I love her so much.

Television

Finished Critical Role Campaign 1! Oh man, what a ride. Gosh, I love that show. I really need to catch up in C2 now. I’ve started it but I’m only on episode 26 or 27.

I’m not sure whether I finished The Clone Wars in 2018 or 2019. I think it was early 2019. This show was amazing and this was the character development that Anakin Skywalker needed. I love Ahsoka Tano. I cannot wait for the last season.

Finished Rebels!!! AGAIN, what a ride!!! I still love Ahsoka Tano. I also love Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren. Sabine’s Darksaber arc was fantastic.

The Mandalorian OMG BABY YODA!!! Yes, I have succumbed to the adorableness of Baby Yoda. Most adorable SW character forever. But also just an enjoyable story in general. This, this is how you craft a story. still NOT over the darksaber omg.

The Good Place is continuing to be good. Not as crazy about season 4, but I’m so glad they decided to limit the seasons.

Got my sister to watch Rebels!! And then even a few episodes of The Clone Wars!!! Mwahaha >)

Finally got around to watching The Great British Bake Off, what a sweet show!

OMG I ALMOST FORGOT Anne With an E!!! Gosh what a wonderful wholesome delightful show. No I haven’t watched S3 yet because I am Lawful Good to a fault and just patiently waiting for it to come on Netflix

Film

So, I woefully neglected to mention The Aeronauts in this post about my favorite movies in the 2010s and that was a Mistake. Because I really enjoyed this one

But otherwise probably check out that list. Because I don’t go to the movies that often, actually, and anything I really loved from 2019 is most definitely listed there.

Reading

Be more supportive in helping my friend run Book Club so that it can actually meet more regularly HA, oops. Book Club died, but kind of in favor of being able to start a second D&D campaign. At least that’s the trade off I’m looking at. I had some OCD-related glasses issues this year that inhibited reading a lot.

Try to read at least one book for myself outside of Book Club lol WELL the one book I read this year was not part of Book Club sooo

Goals for 2020

Writing

I’m not going to make this a completion goal, but instead...

...I’d like to just focus on creating a regular writing schedule/habit. Whatever the project, I just want to make sure I carve out significant time each week just to write. I don’t want to set a specific goal like “x hours a week” for now, but I want to make sure that I am writing each week.

To achieve that (because what are goals without maps):

If the words don’t immediately jump onto the page, then I’m going to try outlining or summarizing. I’m going to let go of overthinking how sentences are phrased, and just pretend I’m describing the story idea to a friend.

That blank page is staring at me and I’m just going to fill it with words no matter what I might think of them!

And I’m going to let everything else expand from there. And see how that works.

Ask the Grumpy PC Technician: GPU Temps, Windows 1909, Engine Repair

Howdy folks. Back in November, I asked you to submit hardware issues, questions, and problems to see whether I might be able to help. It took a lot longer than I wanted to come back to this topic. I had multiple members of my family sick in December, including me.

One of the challenges of solving hardware puzzles using this format is that it helps to find out if a solution actually worked. The Holy Trinity of advice columnists — Abby, Prudence, and Car Talk, as far as I’m concerned — only tend to revisit older letters on occasion, if someone sends an update. I want to be able to present at least some of the diagnosis and eventual solutions, but I figure we’ll try some things and see what works.

One thing I want to add: If you have a general PC or hardware question, or even a historical question about the PC business, you can feel free to ask it. I might even try to rope in a co-worker for additional perspectives. (Psst. Ask Atari questions!)

RTX 2080 Ti Running Hotter Than Expected

From Ty Worsham, a question on operating temperatures on GTX 1080 Ti GPUs versus the RTX 2080 Ti series:

I’ve been building PCs for about 20 years now and this is the first real issue I’ve seen that I just can’t quite figure out, so I need some help. I upgraded from a 1080 Ti to a 2080 Ti. With the 1080 Ti, I was getting around 50-60 degrees Celsius (depending on game and time of year). With the 2080 Ti, I’m getting 60-70. Ambient temp is 22-26c. [The GPU is an ASUS Geforce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB Strix Video Card]

Do these cards just run warmer? Am I being paranoid? I considered I may not have enough positive static air, so I disconnected 2 exhaust fans to see if maybe that would help, but I haven’t noticed much change.

Grumpy PCT: I’m going to answer your question with a question of my own. Which BIOS mode are you currently running in?

According to TechPowerUp, there’s a BIOS switch on the card that sets to a “Quiet BIOS” mode with lower fan noise. It’s *possible* that you are running in that mode, and you may see somewhat better temps if you change your GPU to the other setting.

But as for the temperatures you are seeing? Honestly, yes, modern GPUs do just run hotter. And so far as anyone can tell, it’s safe to run them at those temperatures. AMD has a tendency to push the envelope a bit more in this regard than Nvidia does, but both AMD and Nvidia now regularly field GPUs that allow for sustained temperatures of 75C+. Both GPU manufacturers deploy sophisticated mechanisms that control the GPU’s clocks based on a variety of factors, including temperature. 60-70C appears to be normal for a 2080 Ti.

You say you’ve been building PCs for 20 years, which means you probably remember the era of K6-2’s and Pentium II’s, when a CPU temperature of 50C was high and 70-90C would have meant you had a chip literally melting to the socket. Part of the reason why temps run hotter now is that we’re much better at measuring them — sensor placement and sampling have both improved. Part of it is because chips are now designed to handle higher temperatures than they used to be.

I won’t lie to you. I enjoy high temperatures about as much as I enjoy the taste of Cool Ranch Doritos and cold black coffee. But they’re not a sign of fundamental hardware failure, and the 60-70C range you specified seems to be within the target for your card. Since you specifically identify as a PC builder, I’ll go ahead and ask — have you tried repasting the GPU to see if you can improve the temperatures that way?

Ty: This was immensely helpful sir. I think it comes in the quiet mode BIOS by default. I set up my own fan curve and put a fairly aggressive fan speed vs temp on it as soon as I got it installed. And then I did a BIOS update and I didn’t check it after….I’m pretty sure that was my failing. I reapplied my fan curve and it’s running fine now. It does run in the 60s but you’re right, they just run warmer. I do remember the old days…I ended up pulling the side panel and putting a box fan next to it to get better temps…lol It was redneck, but it worked.

Grumpy PCT: It still works now. If your desktop is unstable under load, check your temperatures and dust level. If the only thing you have on hand to improve your cooling situation is a box fan, try using it.

Should You Install Windows 10 1909?

From Phenom_x8: It is worth it to download and install Win 10 Nov 19 update? I usually update my win 10 only when a major update has been released.

Grumpy PCT: “Worth it” is always a tricky question to evaluate. The Windows 10 1909 update was supposedly so small, enabling it is really just a matter of telling Windows to reboot and turn it on. It’s true that some users have reported issues with 1909, but some percentage of users hit problems with every software release. Verify that you’ll be able to roll back from 1909 if it gives you problems and then try enabling it, would be my advice. You can also check to see what other users are reporting as far as specific bugs with Windows 10 1909 — a straightforward “Windows 10 1909 bugs” produces some useful results.

The thing to keep in mind is that just because a bug is real and deserves to be written up doesn’t mean it actually impacts a lot of people. I’m not trying to let Microsoft off the hook with this — a small bug that hits people with catastrophic file deletion issues is a big deal under any circumstance. I’ve installed 1909 fresh on several systems without any trouble, but if you want to be sure, Google “Windows 10 1909 bugs” and take a look at what people are reporting. If you run into issues after the update, uninstall it.

Do We Take Car Repair Requests?

Chris asks: Hi, I understand you know how to drive a car and what an engine is, would you mind doing a service on mine, please? Oh, and it makes this weird noise sometimes so it would be great if you could fix it for free.

Grumpy PCT: I am unqualified to service your car and spectacularly unwilling to “service” your car, but here we both are. Let’s start with a few base assumptions. Since the only thing you’ve given me to work with is “weird noise” and I don’t know how to fix cars, let’s see what we can do:

First, you’ll want to check the power steering pump. You might hear a weird noise when you put the wheel over if you’re low on power steering fluid. If the noise is both loud and rough (I think of it as blatty, but YMMV), you may have an exhaust system leak. If your car has suddenly begun vibrating in an unusual fashion, there are several possibilities, including 1). It’s broken 2). It’s currently the home of approximately 5,000 bees, or 3). The person you ran over while you were checking for bees is jammed in the wheel well.

Try to get a sense of what you feel the weird noise might mean. Old cars make many strange noises, but there are a few rules of thumbs you can apply:

Weird noises plus sudden vehicle gauge movement = bad.

Weird noise + unexpected fluid = bad. The more energetically the fluid appears, the worse this typically is.

Weird noise + bang + exciting new hole in vehicle = Very bad.

If your car suddenly grows a new part where one didn’t exist before, it is not budding, sprouting, or launching new DLC. It is broken. You should feel bad.

Here’s another handy tip about cars: If something underneath the engine block catches on fire in a 1991 LeBaron, the smoke may fill the backseat first. Tell your family immediately if this happens, rather than waiting to see if anybody else notices. Keep a handy water bottle in the car. Do not taunt your sibling about his initial failure to listen to you.
