Some over analysis of the poses in this TS promotional art, because I can (I think)

(Also, this turned out sooo damn long, so be warned)

Okay, so I had this thought about their hand positionings alluding to a general idea of their (initial) intentions.

There seems to be a pattern with the general placements of the Lis hands that splits pretty evenly. Said placements are: holding out their hand (Ais and Kuras), having their hand on the side of their face/head region (Vere and Leander), and hands that aren't really doing much (Mhin).

Holding out your hand tends to have a more welcoming and helpful association and feeling to it. So, Ais and Kuras holding out a hand could signify an actual sense of wanting to help MC find a cure. This makes a lot of sense for the two of them since they do seem like the least toxic ones from what we’ve been able to get from the demo (of course, Mhin doesn’t seem very toxic either, but their situation is a little different). Also, I did take into consideration that Kuras is kinda…suspicious in a way, but I think that that could be conveyed by his hand not being held out directly toward the viewer. This might mean that he isn’t necessarily as genuine about it as Ais in some way, but he is for the most part.

Putting your hand(s) on the side of your face/head when posing tends to bring more attention to your face. You’re bringing interest to that area by having your hand do something that could enhances how your face region looks. So Vere and Leander on the other hand (pun intended), having a hand placed in said area could represent how they’re planning on “helping you” in a way that prioritizes benefiting them. Vere wants to be free from his magic-bound leash, and he sees that MC is very determined to get involved with the Senobium. He thinks that if he plays his cards right, then MC’s empathy could bring them to help him break free. Promising guidance for MC’s mission is the first step to playing his cards right. Leander’s route though, is clearly going to end in betrayal that would cause some sort of benefit for him. It’s just not as clear when it comes to what it is exactly.

With Mhin’s pose, there’s a clear difference from the others. They’re not doing anything extra with their hands. They’re not posing in a way that purposefully tries to grab your attention, which could represent how they don’t have any particular intentions toward MC at this point in the game. Mhin doesn’t want help, and they don’t want anything from MC either. I don’t even think that they know about MC’s curse yet (unless I’m forgetting something), Mhin truly doesn’t have much of a reason to interact with them again unless MC approaches them first. Mhin could likely not be the one who starts an interaction between the two for a good while in their route. MC is the one that has to try and get Mhin's attention if they want to romance them, not the other way around like the other Lis. MC has to convince Mhin to come with them, as there's no willingness from them (yet).

Another thing I've noticed is that Mhin's pose is compact compared to the rest of the group (all shoulders back, one arm up in one way or another). Of course, it's a fairly casual compactness. They're not completely hugging their knees to their chest or anything. But looking at the image altogether, Mhin does seem to be an outlier of sorts. I mean, they're the only one sitting, they're the most compact, they're the only one who's not being attention seeking to any degree. All of this conveys their closed-off personality very well, yes (it's like they didn't wanna be there and just wanted to quickly get it over with), but maybe this says something about their route too. Like I mentioned before, MC will have to try extra hard for Mhin to gain a sense of fondness toward them. So, the lack of fondness and desire to be around MC at the start could also be a reason that they barely fit in with the pre-established posing conventions (is that a phrase?). No other Li has shown signs of this except for Mhin, possibly making a big difference in how you play their route (as opposed to the rest).

I feel like this is most likely the only actual intentional symbolism that I mentioned so far, but I do want to point out that the mini Eridia at the bottom is heavily scooched to the left so that it barely touches Mhin. I just like this little detail because it's quite a clever way to sneakily remind you that they're an outsider too (if that was intentional). But the fact that we needed to be reminded of that, especially in such a sneaky way. It's almost as if it's emphasizing the fact. I haven't thought of a possible reason for it, but I feel like there could be something in there.

Okay, this was all that I could find and think of. If anything else comes to me, I may do another part. But I think this is enough hidden stuff for an image of Lis to promote a visual novel.....right?

Anon you've come to the right place for incurable thoughts and feelings about Cassandra Cain! And you raise such a good point like there's no way Cain's abuse didn't leave her with more than just aphasia, illiteracy, cptsd, all the emotional issues... OK well he left her with a lot of stuff but still! You're definitely right that there's more. I'm no expert but one thing I know how to do is ramble about Cass, so:

In flashbacks we see young Cass doing a jigsaw of a rose in the dojo Cain's raising her in, which makes me think he did want to find ways to make sure her cognitive skills functioned even without words. Of course this is just me theorising but in terms of toys I think he would have carefully selected things that would stimulate her brain and improve her motor skills even without reading and writing. The image of David Cain carefully buying Jenga and Operation and making sure all the packaging with words on it never reaches Cass is now permenantly stuck in my head so thank you for that.

I do think she was definitely deprived of a lot though, and things like the jigsaw were clearly meant to be filler stuff for her before the actual fun games like "getting shot and dodging the next few bullets". I don't think Cain would have ever wanted Cass to be relaxed and comfortable enough to actually fully enjoy playing with toys, you know? If she was actually able to find things like jigsaws meaningful and fulfilling then his conditioning of her to associate getting shot with "fun game of dodgeball" wouldn't have been as successful. Cass may not have liked two for flinching but she did love the fighting and the dodging. Any thoughts of "why am I in pain when I could just be playing Jenga" would have never been allowed enter Cass's head. Which would be easy enough because (understandably so given the isolation) Cass looked up to Cain and got joy and fulfilment from seeing him smile. He doesn't care if she finished the jigsaw other than getting angry/worried if she fails. Whereas being able to assemble and break apart a gun while blind makes him light up with happiness/pride. So naturally, even with Cain making sure her brain isn't TOO different for her not to be able to function as the perfect weapon, she would still be deprived of important cognitive skills and stimuli.

The writing specific fine motor skills would definitely be impacted imo because while her training makes sure her hands can work a massive variety of weapons and probably permenantly injure a man in multiple places with each finger, writing is such a specific task that only comes naturally to us because we learned it so young. It can be learned later in life of course but the natural act of holding a pen and writing would feel so alien to Cass. And that's before you factor in her dyslexia like no wonder we only saw her pick up a pen once 😭 Cass being able to write the alphabet with any sort of ease and lack of intense focus would be a massive accomplishment given David Cain's fuckery.

And just in general being so isolated for most of her childhood would have impacted her brain so badly like even without the autism Cass must have been in overstimulated sensory hell after leaving Cain. So many voices talking, which she'd never heard before. So many smells and sounds and new textures and sights that are too intense for her eyes to handle. She missed out on an entire world and only got to start experiencing it when she was 8, that's got to have a longterm impact. I think as well as autism Bruce and Barbara had her tested for adhd due to all the symptoms she displayed. Doctors aren't clear if she actually has it or if its something different brought on by her upbringing. She spent nine years homeless and travelling so she's more adjusted than she was at the start but there's still times that the whole world just goes blurry and whoops panic attack time need to find an empty place and hide.

I'll stop here so I don't rant forever but thank you for giving me the chance to yell about head. canons and theories. Cass is indeed the most fascinating onion, and the layers are endless. Feel free to rant in my inbox whenever you want I love hearing other people's thoughts on her!

not a Perfect Slaughter question but Astarion one. you remember that scene in goblin camp where a Loviatar priest and PC can do an impromptu bdsm session? Astarion's reaction always confused me. he seems to be strangely into it for a person who experienced a lot of non consensual sex with physical violence sprinkled on top. like yes, he could be faking it (it's act 1 after all) but he gives a lot of approval points for it.

is it just a case of him being his usual gremlin self? or is he more amenable to the show now when he isn't the one on the receiving end of a whip? also at this point in a game i doubt he cares too much for PC (reminds me abt his remark "i don't like seeing you hurt" or smth along the line).

and more generally, what do you think is his stance on pain play and d/s stuff in the bedroom? anyway would like to hear your musings on this, ciao <3

Hey anon!

I'm no Astarion expert compared to some in this fandom, but this is a scene I've thought a lot about the implications of myself so I'll offer my two (very long-winded) cents. I'd love to hear others' thoughts as well!

I agree that Astarion's big approvals should be isolated to the context of when in the game he's giving them. Based on his smaller approval points in Act I, when Astarion starts out this journey he seems to like watching people get treated how he once was. Just a few really early examples:

Tav* making Lae'zel say please (Astarion begging Cazador)

Tav making Zorru bow (Astarion having to bow in Cazador's presence)

Tav prodding Nettie's injured bird till it dies (Godey flashbacks)

Tav telling Mayrina's brothers they won't help (no one ever helping Astarion)

Tav terrorizing Lorin/entertaining his delusions (☹)

So we could argue Astarion is just leaning into this sadistic trauma response in the Loviatar scene as well. He finds satisfaction, however temporary, in seeing others endure what he once had to, and reassuring himself that he's on the winning/powerful/in control side this time. AKA not the weak pathetic person he feels like he was before. The self-loathing is subtle, but not far under the surface.

Considering he often disapproves of Tav being self-sacrificing and weak in other instances, however (usually when it's on behalf of others), why does he highly approve in this certain instance of Tav submitting to pain and injury for seemingly no good reason?

I think the timing of this scene in Act I makes a big difference, considering it's deep in the goblin camp where the party is usually at least a couple levels into their adventure. So in that case, Tav is the established leader, Astarion's vampiric nature is revealed, and they've survived quite a few encounters together already. Some trust has been built. Astarion is more assured of Tav's strength, competency, and willingness to keep him in the group....but that assurance of Tav's strength could be crossing over to feeling unsafe again.

There's plenty of other chaotic, less-sadistic things that he likes (BAAAA!), but almost** all of his big +5 or +10 approvals come from Tav agreeing to something that makes Astarion feel safe and/or powerful. So perhaps Astarion wants Tav to say yes to the Loviatar pain ritual because he views it as a show of strength. He might feel safer knowing that his leader can not only handle pain, but is so entirely unafraid as to welcome it even in the midst of a dangerous goblin camp--something Astarion's 'weak' past self never would have done (cue the self-loathing again).

Based on how eager he sounds when encouraging Tav, though ("don't you dare say no!"), I like to think that he's playing it off as sexual but in reality wants to assure himself he's not with another Cazador. While Astarion is likely to follow Tav regardless, I think he's more interested in being intimate with Tav--if he hasn't already--after seeing that Tav is okay with not always being in charge and assertive, in control. I think, especially at the start, Astarion craves control after not having it for so long, and this kinky display tells him Tav wouldn't mind him taking over for a little while.

Which, at last, gets us to your question about Astarion's views on "pain play and d/s stuff in the bedroom." I think it's telling that Astarion has a +5 approval during the first sex scene if Tav rolls over and lets him bite, and no matter which final romance scene you end up with in Act III, he's depicted as the top. If he ascends, he quickly jumps into what I'd call a permanent d/s dynamic with spawn!Tav where's he's the one in control, made all the more evident with the new kissing animations for patch 6. Plenty of implications to be had, about his preferences.

Now (and these are entirely my headcanons/opinions from here on out), Astarion just isn't in a place for what I'd consider actual healthy d/s dynamics in the bedroom during or immediately after the game timeline, as his mindset is too rooted in fear, self-loathing, and desperate grabs for control. It's been days, weeks at most since he was tortured and controlled on the regular--a lot of this stuff could be triggers and provoke flashbacks, or at the least reinforce the idea in his head that sex is a tool of manipulation and control. Truly safe, sane and consensual d/s acts just don't seem on the table--he goes through a period of not wanting sex at all, much less intimacy where so much trust is required.

But post-game, with enough time? I could see spawn!Astarion*** eventually enjoying some light bdsm in either role, maybe pain play beyond bites if he was the one giving, not receiving the pain. Which all could be a healing experience for him, with trust and aftercare involved. He wouldn't make it on my list of 'top three kinkiest companions' though 😂

Anyways, this is all very much my personal opinion!! Astarion is a fascinating character with so much nuance, there's endless ways to interpret him. And maybe he was just feeling extra chaotic and kinky that day 🤷‍♀️ "Ah, drink it in - that sweet, sweet chaos. Not that I approve of goblins, of course - filthy little beasts - but I do like a good den of debauchery."

Hello! I own and read quite a few amazing Spider-Man comics and Flash Thompson is not usually present in them. However what I’ve seen, I’ve liked him and I like what I see of him in the fandom. But today I was at a store and skimmed through an amazing Spider-Man comic (the issue was in the 200s) and he was portrayed as someone who cheated and hit his girlfriend and was an asshole. I’m wondering if I have the wrong interpretation of him or he was written inaccurately for a bit or smth else? I don’t know if ur a flash expert but you seem to know what you’re talking about usually so I figured I’d ask! Thank u

ah, the unfortunate out of context issue "wait, has everyone been ignoring this part of the character, or is this a wild outlier?" feeling. I'm not a Flash Thompson expert but I immediately know what you walked in on: the Hobgoblin "mystery".

For a stretch in the 80s, editorial and writers were duking it out over who the secret identity of the Hobgoblin should be. As a result, the Hobgoblin got maybe... five fakeout identity reveals? And one of them was Flash Thompson. Since Flash didn't talk like, act like, or even have any motivation to be Hobby, someone decided to make it more plausible with that.

Honestly, the biggest injustice of this to me is how it steps on Sha Shan and Flash's breakup because their relationship was really messed up. Not because Flash was purposefully malicious, but because Sha Shan moved to America after surviving the Vietnam war to live with someone drafted in that same war. And because the writers' orientalism kept them from wondering how Sha Shan felt about that as a person, of course Flash never wondered either.

In this little arc Sha Shan gets to say this—briefly. She expresses her wishes for education and the crazy isolating experience of being a woman in an unfamiliar country whose only support is a boyfriend with no understanding of her home culture. But this topic only comes up long enough to make people go "wow! Flash is secretly evil! I wonder if he's the supervillain!" when the writers AND the readers already know they're not going to make Flash the Hobgoblin. Stupid.

From what I can tell, the fan-opinion of this is kind of determined by later plotlines. Flash and Betty do have an off-and-on thing later; a lot of people take the "Flash cheated with Betty" thing to be something that actually happened. But Flash was also later retconned to be a witness/survivor of domestic abuse himself as a kid, so that part is usually taken as dubiously canon and just in really bad taste.

Tell us about your Rogue Trader! She looks badass.

Hoooo booy, I'm not a WH40K expert, but here we go!

Her name is Rainer, which is more of an alias from the early days in Schola Progenium, practically no one remembers her original name, not even herself lol. She was picked from the streets and mindwiped and was told that her parents are heroes or smth and how she'd follow in their footsteps, but the point is the mind forgets, but the body remembers - her skills and temper, gained in the slums died hard, like really hard. Her character is pretty much summarised as bratty hooligan, who learned to hide her emotions too damn well. And boy oh boy she doesn't even realise how much of a suppressed monster she is even without the warp influence. It's hard for me to summarise her character in a few words, but I do enjoy making ambiguous characters, but I'll say she's not without some pangs of conscience here and there.

Rainer's in-game portrait that I posted is basically her look post-Act III with white streaks in her hair and Glasgow grin of course. And on official events she styles her hair in halo braid.

no i haven’t done their sprites yet bc it would take so much time and i’m not even sure if people wanna see more of this au skjdkdsakdfkl,, but i have Design Ideas.

events of the dsmp revolution are just a FLARP session drawing parallels to how the homestuck trolls had a FLARP session that spoiler alert: destroyed friendships. dtrio, eret, will are involved. eret betrays will's faction and wilbur's still Bitter over that.

on the context of alternia (highbloods and lowbloods) lmanburg and dreamsmp have their roles SWAPPED.  the emancipation theme thing is completely gone since highbloods are in more power than the lowbloods (the dream team) . 

wilbur made a faction called l’manburg because he wants a place where he and his fellow highbloods could make drugs vibe.they take a piece of land that was owned by the dream team. in normal circumstances, they shouldve stood down because lowbloods aren't supposed to start shit with highbloods (especially a group of highbloods that has the alternian heir among them)  but dream turned it into an activism thing about lowblood rights. the story plays as close as possible without tommy or tubbo in it (which is pretty hard ik but this is the best can do).

like in the dreamsmp revolution, dream kinda let wilbur do what he wants but this time he has more reason to because he’s in a lower caste. dream really only fought back when wilbur announced that he’d be building lmanburg on their land and calling it theirs.

eret betrays wilbur by supporting the lowbloods and wilbur and co. technically won but only because he finally called the drones in, as a reference to how lmanburg absolutely got crushed by the dream team in the smp but technically won. l’manburg keeps the piece of land and the dream team scatter away to find a new home.

wilbur soot's a fuschia because a) he's in a position that has a lot of power, b) yknow how he wrote a song about squids and his thing with sally… yeah.

eret's a violet because nobility!! dream looks down on him because he's ambivalent on fighting for lowblood rights when he's in a power to do so "you just sit there, and you look pretty that's it"

also like eridan he has a minor aesthetic mutation (herobrine eyes) that won't classify him as a mutant.

george is still colorblind but he has lazer eyes along with it instead. dream lives with him in the same hive since being a mutant means dream doesn’t get a lusus of his own (dnf fans getcha juice “and they were roommates”) 

despite living in the same hive, he never really figures out that dream is a limeblood. possibly because a) he’s colorblind and when he sees dream bleeding he just sees yellow b) he’s just that fucking oblivious and it’s so valid of him.

sapnap’s a bronzeblood mainly because i know he’s the instigator of the pet war with tommy also because i associate him with the color orang in my mind so bronze it is

April 26, 1831

Louisa is certainly our bilingual queen (I mean technically a princess but…our queen) and as her six children grew up, they were taught and spoken to both in English and French (they also knew a bit of Latin but that’s irrelevant here). Daniel only knew English as he never paid much attention to Latin in his lessons as a boy and didn’t care for anything else until he met Louisa. Being around her so much, he certainly picked up on a few phrases – especially the few she used often – but it was never enough to where he could hold up much of a conversation yet alone understand her when she spoke quickly.

But we also know Daniel is a troublemaker at heart – a characteristic that is so strong in him that it was passed down to most of his children – and that didn’t really lessen even as he grew up into adulthood. Christian was once Daniel’s target for his pranks but once they moved out, Daniel had no one but Louisa to challenge. Now he couldn’t prank the children because that would just be cruel but they could certainly help him formulate a plan against their mother.

“Mama won’t like this.” would always be Philip’s first warning, watching as his father and his older brother stood across the room and quietly lifted the baby from her crib.

“We’re just going on a walk.” Daniel said, cooing down at the five-month-old in his arms, “Aren’t we, little one?”

“It is just fun.” Henry told his brother as they left the nursery.

The five children followed Daniel along the hallway and down the stairs like ducklings, little feet pattering after him through the palace and out into the gardens. He set baby Victoria among the flowers, shushing her softly as she let out a displeased cry.

“We’re going to play a little joke on Mummy so be a good girl and stay right there.” Daniel whispered. He asked the terribly surprised gardener to keep an eye on the baby as he ushered the rest of the children inside quickly.

He got them settled around the sitting room fireplace to look as casual as they could and he kept his eye on the clock on the wall. Louisa always woke Victoria from her afternoon nap at quarter-after-three. Any second now…

“Daniel!”

The children bit back their giggles as their mother’s heavy footsteps came rushing down the main staircase and echoed through the large hallways as she turned quickly into the sitting room, her dress billowing behind her and an unpleased expression on her face.

“Where is she?”

“Whatever do you mean, darling?” Daniel asked, faking concern like he was an expert at it.

“Bon dieu, Daniel! Our daughter!” (Good God, Daniel)

“Is she not upstairs?” Daniel set the book he was holding onto the mantle and took a step towards her. “She was sleeping there mere moments ago. Right?”

He turned to the other five children who stared at him and then their mother and then just quietly looked back to their books. Their silence was the obvious answer.

“Where is she, Daniel? Je suis serieux.” Louisa demanded. (I am serious.)

Daniel bit back a cheeky smile at his wife’s obvious distress but answered to not have her lose too much of her mind, “She’s with the gardener.”

“Merde!” Louisa huffed and turned quickly out of the room towards the gardens.

Daniel and the children rushed after her and back into the cool spring air. Louisa apologized to the gardener before bending down to gently scoop up the crying baby from the bed of flowers and she turned to Daniel with an angry glare.

“Tu me dégoûtes avec ton cinéma. C'est un bébé, et vous le savez! Elle aurait pu tomber malade ou être enlevée et c’est drôle pour toi? Quand vas-tu te décider à grandir?” (You disgust me with your scenes. She is only a baby and you know that. She could have fallen ill or been taken and that’s funny to you? When are you going to grow the fuck up?)

Louisa’s obvious angry distress had Daniel’s cheeky smile falling into shock in seconds, watching as she shouted at him in rushed French as she cradled her crying baby to her chest. The exhausted frustration in her face was obvious and the fact that he had no clue what she was yelling at him only kept him quiet longer.

“Vu ête un terrible exemple pour vos enfants et j’en ai marre de tes conneries.” (You are a terrible example to your children and I am sick of your shit.) Louisa went to walk past him back into the palace but she turned back to look at him again.

“Tu manges dans ta chambre ce soir. Si tu vas agir comme un enfant, je te traiterai comme un enfant.” (You’re eating in your room tonight. If you’re going to act like a child then I’m going to treat you like one.)

Daniel swallowed thickly, knowing by her tone that she was scolding him but being too frightened to ask for clarification of what she said in a language he could actually understand. He knew ‘you’re eating in your room tonight’ from her scolding’s to their children over the prior few years but the rest was just a jumble of fast talking loud French that made absolutely no sense in his brain.

“Louisa.” Daniel tried, reaching for her.

She stepped back from him, “Ne me touche pas, Daniel James. Fils de pute.” (Do not touch me. Son of a bitch.)

He dropped his hand and pouted like a scolded puppy as he watched her walk briskly back into the palace with their youngest. The rest of the children turned back to their father with mirrored shocked faces, the youngest two of the group cowardly slightly behind Henry’s legs.

“Daddy’s in trouble.” Margret giggled softly.

“You did that to yourself.” Philip mumbled before turning and heading back inside as well.

Daniel sighed.

Extraordinary You: Maybe my favorite k-drama this year! It’s magical and romantic and super cute!! I won’t say anything else because I don’t want to spoil it but if you like Rowoon, you’ll like it an extra amount.

Shopping King Louie: Ridiculously fun and lighthearted romp following a spoiled and useless chaebol with amnesia who is being taken care of by a country bumpkin in the city. Very low stakes, super adorable couple, and as many tropes as you can fit in your bag, this one is one of my favorites to recommend.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo: Joon-Hyung is a sweet and doting beta male who falls for Bok-Joo really hard, like puppy dog hard. He loves her for the tom-boy she is and respects her athletic prowess. These two are adorable together and there are TONS of cute scenes with them on dates and cuddling, though his immaturity/nick names for her annoyed me sometimes (maybe I’m sensitive).

Her Private Life: Park Min Young really knows how to pick dramas. I loved this one about a museum curator who is secretly a fangirl obsessed with an idol. It’s fun and fluffy but does have a very mild childhood trauma thing with his mother but I mean, 99% of dramas like this do? If you like this one, Touch Your Heart and Why Secretary Kim are by the same person and have similar vibes.

Fight for My Way: I love this drama! The couple is one of my OTPs and it’s really funny and a mostly lighthearted story of a group of friends. It’s down to earth and adorable - I’ve never had anyone complain about this one!

I meant fanfiction! :) there are lot of stories in ao3 and other sites but sometimes I want to read a very specific story that does not exist so i'm like "whatever, i'll do it myself" but I go and butcher the characters personality and I want to be better but I don't know how to not make them OOC or what to notice so I can write them better

well. im no expert by any rate but im happy to share what i think helps me

to me, capturing a character in fanfic is about three things: Voice, Boundaries, & Drive.(these are not official terms) these are the things i think about when im stuck or when the character isn’t coming together quite right, & while i don’t usually have them in the forefront of my mind, i think most of my writing does it with these three aspects in mind

Voice is about capturing the cadence of a character & it isn’t just about “this sounds like smth they would say” but abt How they say it, & the whole atmosphere around them, the way they move & speak & act. it’s the difference between, for example:

“So? Are you well?” she asked, eyes flicking over him, checking him over for injury.

&, “Hey dude, what’s up? You good?” she asked, already at his side before he can answer, poking and prodding for injury.

The Voice of these characters are distinct despite both doing exactly the same thing—they have the same Drive (make sure he is ok) but their Voice & Boundaries (one holds distant, one gets up close & personal) are different

Boundaries are the set parameters of a character & they’re super fun & interesting bc story is a lot abt pushing or testing or breaking these boundaries—how far will someone go to save a life? or reach their goal? are they physically affectionate? are they emotionally affectionate? what are their morals? you can set these states on a slidingscale from Very to Not At All & depending on the character, it is harder or easier to shift those boundaries

Drive - the driving force of that character, the one or two things that are integral to them. this is usually a Goal of some kind - figure out who killed my dad, get revenge on my rival for stealing my research, discover the secrets of this ancient magic, etc etc. this drive will push events forward & push character into interesting places that alter or challenge their Boundaries & although it is the least immediately addressed of the three, it has the most weight & influence over the other two

when u are writing fanfic & u want to be in character, i find it helps to figure out what these are for ur characters. since im obsessed w beau at the moment, i will use her as an example

Voice: brash, rude, confident, direct. characterised by movement, a physical presence

Boundaries: not hugely physically affectionate - Challenged by jester & caleb; confronts authority, questions everything; low morals shift to high morals, constant if difficult upwards shift

Drive: ??? I have two constants i revolve her character around though I’m Very interested to know what her real core drive is - to prove she is more than what people think she is OR truth seeker

i hope you don't mind me ranting but i'm on my first year of drama school and they're making us do these abstract performances (which i hate) and for our second one i chose the subject of femeninity, what it is, how it changes depending on whose eyes you see it through (men/women), and how i've come to embrace it despite all the negativity attached to it etc(i'm a woman). and everyone in my class thought it was great but my teacher was like "what do you mean by negativity" and i said "yk like when a man is effeminate and he gets told he's a woman as an insult, or when you're taught as a girl while growing up that certain femenine traits—bc femeninity is a social construct/gender roles—are bad and you shouldn't have them. but then u grow up and realise that's all bs" and she said "but femeninity and femenine are different things" and i was like ??? and she went on to say that gender is a social construct (um...) and i said i don't believe that and that society decides what's femenine meaning what is included in femeninity but she told me to check the words on the dictionary and i did and i'm right so idk wtf she's on about. and i'm mad asf bc it is a great idea that i had but bc she's a bitch she'll give me a bad grade regardless of how well i do in the performance bc she doesn't agree with my (or rather, the ACTUAL) conception of femeninity/femenine. i mean i know you can use the word to say femenine gender or femenine sex to refer to women but if it's a matter of conext and we're talking about femeninity she should've known??? ugh idk sorry for this

i think that's incredibly stupid of your teacher. first of all, the fucking "gender is a social construct" give me a break. seriously, what the fuck. how did progressives decide to agree with terf rhetoric anyway. and secondly, femininity is like, the act of being feminine, or feminine-the-verb, depending on how you want to phrase it. there's some like paradox or principle or smth that says the less you know about something, the more confident you are about it, which is likely what ppl like your teacher thrive off of. they read one or two articles and then decide they're experts and never bother to search deeper into the topic

anyway, as much as it sucks to say, it probably would be a good idea to change what you're doing to get a good grade. a lot of teachers refuse to ever think that their students are more educated on certain topics than them, and so you'll never convince her otherwise. or, if you wish (and i don't recommend this bc she might hold a grudge), i suppose you could still go through with it and basically tell her to fuck off hasndlkjfsdlkf not a smart option, but an option nonetheless

Thoughts on some of the asks you've had recently!!

1. I think outside of Stan Tumblr and Twitter where there is anti-Whitney sentiment from some corners, Callum is likely being viewed with a lot of sympathy right now. Part of this is because he's nice and likeable, showing sympathetic symptoms etc. And part bc he's a former soldier w named PTSD... like I don't think I need to elaborate on why people accept that particular narrative more easily!!

2. Like anon I also appreciate that you shared your thoughts on Ben having BPD and how we can view his character through that. I also know someone on Twitter has put forward a good case for Ben having cPTSD which I think fits too (and it's not like he can't have just one lol)

3. Having said that if the EE writers so much as touch on Ben having cPTSD I predict Stan Twitter might just implode w rage bc it's "Callum's Thing" and "Ben shouldn't have an excuse for his actions" 🥴 And again tying into making it a competition, but also Callum being a recognisable face of PTSD as a soldier/police who can be sympathised w vs Ben who... isn't that lmao. I doubt it'll ever happen bc I'm not sure the writers/audience are ready to confront PTSD caused by childhood trauma and an unsympathetic person living w it, especially when it implicates Phil whose like the face of the show lmao

4. I'm looking at a lot of this rn w interest because it really does epitomise the acceptable vs unacceptable mental illness, what trauma is recognised and amed and what isn't, which actions are viewed as forgivable vs which actions label you a Bad Person.

5. I think this discourse (lol) is a bit different to Isaac's story bc the Callum/Ben conversations are more about reactions to two characters and how their mh is received and treated by fans and the writers and how the very fact Callum has named PTSD says a lot abt certain sterotypes/attitudes. Whereas Isaac's story is ongoing and will deliberately seek to challenge similar stereotypes by using other characters as mouthpieces for different stereotyped views of his illness. Idk does that make sense? The Ballum stuff is a discussion that sits v much outside of the canon writing as a critique if how and why characters get certain labels and stories, while Isaac's is a canon issue led story??

6. I could write an Essay about how reactions to Ben tie into attitudes toward offenders and the criminal justice system, rehabilitation etc but... maybe another day lmao

2. it's actually crazy that u bring that up bc me and vikki @permetstu were just talking abt this the other day bc i was surprised at how many overlapping symptoms there are between bpd and ptsd and so i googled it and found that actually bpd and cptsd are pretty commonly confused as each other BECAUSE of the overlap in symptoms !!!! but you're dead on, they can and often do co-occur bc both ptsd and bpd are rooted in trauma. i personally still would lean towards bpd for ben over cptsd bc of his abandonment issues which seem (from a quick google tbf so it's not like im an expert lmao) to occur in bpd but not in cptsd. but like i said im not an expert and they can co-exist !! i just think it's very interesting how other ppl are spotting the same things and talking abt a diagnosis that is so commonly misdiagnosed as bpd and vice versa. like at least i know im not imagining it lmao !!!

3 + 4. sadly i think you're right lmao that's exactly what i meant when i was talking abt there being an outcry if there was ever to be a bpd diagnosis for ben bc he's 'bad rep' bc of the things he's done. in that post i was talking abt bpd exclusively but you could apply that to any mental illness and you'd get ppl saying that they're excusing his behaviour instead of explaining it. ppl don't want explanations for someone's 'bad' i.e. outward behaviour/actions, not in characters and not in real life. ppl are more sympathetic to ppl who internalize their symptoms and/or have symptoms that don't really affect others, and i think that's another reason why ppl sympathise w callum more. i think it just comes down to ppl not wanting to understand the complexities of mental illness bc it's just easier to pass those behaviours off as personal issues/failure, someone's personality, someone being 'bad' etc etc u know? whereas something like ptsd fits a lot nicer into a box. for an outsider, it's less complicated, esp in someone like callum. callum saw/experienced bad things in the army, now he has this trigger that makes him act out a little bit. if you look at it in it's barest terms, it's a very defined cause and effect that is easy to understand. obviously it's not that simple, but that's how ppl view it. most mental illnesses don't have that very clear cause and effect, and therefore it's, for some reason, incredibly hard for ppl to wrap their head around. even if you were to say ben had ptsd too, it'd still be difficult for ppl bc what he's been thru 'isn't as bad' as what callum has, so what do you mean he's traumatised ?? like honestly there is a problem with how we all collectively view trauma. even when i first started having counselling and ppl were tellind me 'this thing traumatised u' i'm like ??? that's not Trauma tho. but trauma doesn't have to mean something horrific or violent. there is no threshold for trauma and it hurts all of us to have one. if smth fuck u up, it fucked u up. just bc u weren't in a warzone or physically abused in some way doesn't mean you can't still be traumatised, and i think that's a difficult pill for ppl to swallow.

5. when i said that i didn't mean to compare their storylines, i just kind of meant look at the reactions (both on screen and off) to callum's symptoms vs ben's vs isaac's. they're all mentally ill (as far as i'm concerned lmao) but you've got someone who's very easily sympathised with vs someone who is unsympathetic bc of his behaviour vs someone who is unsympathetic bc they're 'scary' or 'crazy'. it comes back the same issues of how obvious is the cause and effect and how sympathetic are their symptoms. but yeah, i agree isaac's sl is completely different for all the reasons you said but also the conversation of (mis)diagnosis in poc for these types of things and also medicating these types of illnesses but that's a whole other conversation but yh lmao i was purely just comparing different reactions to different illnesses and presentations of those illnesses, that's all !

6. i do not know enough abt this particular topic to have an Opinion but i do know enough to know you're right and that you for bringing this up to me bc it will def be smth for me to consider moving forward !!!
