A creature from North American folklore. The story Tailypo takes part in, is mostly told to children as a cautionary tale, not to abuse animals.
The Tailypo returns to a man that shot of its tail, which he eats right after. Later at night the Tailypo returns to the man, demanding its Tail back.

Hey! This is for a bigger project I'm thinking of starting. If anyone could help out, I'd really appreciate it. It's kind of a turn from my usual stuff with Marvel and whatnot, but bare with me and reblog if you've got any friends/mutuals that can help out!
Calling any history/culture/mythology/folklore fans out there.
Basically, I need folklore from all different kinds of cultures, specifically personifications of things, such as Lady Justice from Greek, the Grim Reaper from Dark Ages, and Yin/Yang from Chinese.
I'm interested to hear anything and everything from all continents and countries. African, Asian, Australian, Europian, South American, and North American.
Give me the bad, give me the good, give me the ridiculous, give me the serious, give me all of it! Religious, scientific, nature, whatever!
Thanks to every participant!

Day 28: Theodosia Burr Alston!
Theodosia Burr was the daughter of American revolutionary and politician Aaron Burr and his wife and her namesake, Theodosia Bartow. Her mother was a proponent of women’s education, and though she died when Theodosia was eleven, the young girl received an intensive education in languages, literature, and music as well as arithmetic and politics. In her teen years, she served as her father’s society hostess, managing the household and hobnobbing with New York notables. In 1801, likely at her financially-strapped father’s behest, Theodosia made a marriage to Joseph Alston, a massively wealthy South Carolina politician and slaver, who would serve as governor of South Carolina during the War of 1812. The couple had one child, named for Theodosia’s father, but she seems to have suffered complications from the pregnancy that would leave her with fragile health… and worse was still to come. In 1807, Theodosia’s father was charged with treason. She rode to Richmond to accompany him during his trial, and corresponded with him constantly during his self-imposed European exile. In 1812, he planned to return to New York - just as Theodosia’s young son died of malaria. Theodosia, grief-stricken, sailed some months later to see her father, but her ship, the Patriot, was never heard from again. This is where Theodosia Burr Alston enters North Carolina legend. Did wreckers off the Outer Banks sink her ship? Was she captured by pirates based at Oak Island, and haunts its beaches still? What of the portrait washed ashore at Nag’s Head which bears a striking resemblance to her - is it the only relic of the Patriot’s final voyage? Whatever the truth, records suggest the ship hit the Graveyard of the Atlantic in the teeth of a winter gale. It likely rests there still.

Jackson's Daily Bestiary #14: Thunderbird
Tumblr media
Region of Origin: North America
Thunderbirds are giant birds of Native American mythology, found among the legends of many tribes in North America, particularly those of the Great Lakes region. They are called Thunderbirds because they are said to cause thunder with the flap of their wings and produce lightning from their eyes.
They are said to be large enough to carry off whales in their talons and eat them. Many tribes consider them sacred forces of nature, as they would bring the rain and thus cause vegetation to grow. They may also sometimes be accompanied by lesser spirits in the form of smaller birds and falcon.
Many legends depict them as being constantly engaged in war with evil spirits of the underworld. In Algonquin legends, they are the ancestors of the human race and mortal enemies of the water panther Mishipeshu. In Ojibwe myths, they are moral enforcers created by the culture hero Nanabozho in order to fight underwater spirits.

Cold-loving critters, their snow-white scales render them practically invisible to their prey. They don't typically attack humans, preferring smaller prey. Supposedly, inexplicable marks in the snow might be evidence of a snow snake having passed through.
