I want to talk about Barbie (2023) but not really in conversation with anyone so I think it’ll be a trickle of thoughts about my theatre experience.
For instance, while the theatre was packed with mothers and daughters, I was seated next to a tween boy who was not excited for the movie. He damn near passed out laughing during several scenes. He didn’t finish any of his snacks. He didn’t go to the bathroom.
None of the children in the theater went to the bathroom, which you’ll know if the true testament of a a movie’s success. Nobody moved, honey.
The monologue has been critiqued as baby’s first feminism but I don’t know what y’all wanted from a megacorp. I’m still surprised it even got in there. One of the moms in the theater stood the up and clapped bc apparently she needed some of that second wave feminism. Everyone’s politics isn’t where yours is. It always starts somewhere. Again do not know why people are complaining. This is nothing compared to Marvel’s not infamous girl power moment where they all just stood there. Also the speech while very Plan but heartfelt, coming from America Ferrara just carries a couple extra layers for me personally as she was one of the first actresses of my generation who was a chubby teen girl who was allowed to be a real person.
Also it’s not just the monologue. It’s wishing it was as easy as pulling your fellow people into the back of the van and reprogramming them with facts. In a world where facts literally don’t matter anymore, it felt like science fiction. I don’t know y’all, I just got a lot out of that script. Like if your gonna do a giant advertisement movie, this is about as good as it gets. And it didn’t feel icky like a dove ad. Similar to the mist recent Dungeons and Dragons, it felt like playing.
The Ken stuff was fun but we have to discuss the MASTERFUL use of Matchbox 20’s Push, which is about the rare disempowered man who wishes to get a leg up on his female partner who appears to be emotionally hurting him in their relationship. I need time. Bc Greta? Noah? They were crazy for that one. Absolutely mad. Ken comparing his struggle with Barbie’s boundaries to a man whose actually being hurt bc Ken is a doll and that’s about as far as his understanding goes [see: horses]. Reader, I died laughing. I think I was the only one in the theater that this bit really worked for. It was a stroke of genius and seems to be going unnoticed.
The acafans have been surprisingly quiet about this movie, all the merch and the orchestrated resurgence of Barbie. Make no mistake, this is fandom. Star Wars fans were allowed to buy their books, dolls, and bumper stickers in peace but the idea that a movie will make some people want to buy a 20 dollar doll or some pink pants is stressing people out. Would love everyone to step back and breathe. They’re always going to try to sell us something. They’re selling us something most of y’all have been buying.
I think I am less bothered by the capitalistic effects because for once I didn’t totally hate the experience of being sold something. Probably because I’m not buying anything and while I live a pink life, I’m not actually a Barbie girl. What I am is an early educator and dolls, dramatic play are a huge part of development.
What I also am, apparently, is a Barbie movie script defender because above all else, that script was tight as fresh box braids. A hilarious straight forward comedy. It should be a celebration of putting money behind talent but it’s a reminder of why writers need to be fairly compensated. This movie marks the end of summer, representing so many things. It’s complicated. Pink and complicated.

Hi, I’m new to TW (I know WAY LATE), but I’m pretty sure I’m now a diehard Sterek fan. Do you feel that one of the guys is favored over the other? I’m not sure if that’s worded right, I know they’re both loved as they should be, but is one more popular? Like, who has the most ships outside of Sterek? Who are most fics centered on? Also, I just saw another ship I follow discussing Barbenheimer, and I could totally see Stiles all excited and dressed in pink, dyed hair like Ken, for Barbie, while Derek readies for Oppenheimer by reading up on it, wanting to know the history, etc.
awww welcome to the fandom! i love how Sterek is still getting new shippers in 2023 its so cute.
i dont think one is more favoured but i do think Stiles is the more “mainstream” character of the show? he’s more generally liked i think. but also its hard for me to be objective because i’ve been into the Sterek fandom exclusively for so long, i haven’t witnessed much from the mainstream teen wolf fandom in ages. but over the years that was my impression. but i know Derek is very much beloved too just not in the same way.
all in all, i can’t really help you on the questions about the fandom outside of Sterek 😅 i haven’t bothered with it in too long. but i do know a lot of ships from the show were hella popular, i even enjoyed some of them and still do when i read Sterek fics but none were ever as popular as Sterek and frankly thats all that matters (to me lol).
akdkakfjak i went to see Barbie last friday and it was so good!!! and i just know Sterek have booked a double feature to see Barbenheimer. Stiles made it a whole ass event. he planned his outfit, Derek’s outfit and everything. they made the whole thing a nice big date.

Barbenheimer: Hell is Real and We Built It
Last night I decided to commit to the meme of watching both Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day. I had a bit of a mix up with the movie theaters, turns out that constructing movie theaters following the philosophy of Californian Starbucks is actually detrimental, but I digress. I was fortunate enough to have a two hour break between both of these films in order to let them properly digest. In fact, they’re still being broken down as I write them, so my thoughts are a bit more sporadic than I would usually have them when committing my thoughts to text. I have nothing but good things to say about both films, plotwise, I’ll try to stay away from any major spoilers, focusing more on themes rather than the story aspects of both stories. The Oppenheimer section will be riddled with spoilers, but I will mention that when we get there so you may skip that section.
Barbie was a bit of a shocker to me. I’m no stranger to stories that like to get on their soapbox, but Barbie was strikingly different. I wasn’t annoyed at the message the same way I was in regards to The Alchemist or Netflix’s Sabrina: The Teenage Witch. I make the connection between those three as they are incredibly loud about what they’re trying to tell you, they break a very fundamental rule of writing I hold very close to me: Show, don’t tell. None of those three tell as much as line up a series of megaphones directly next to your ear and yell their message, but Barbie executed that in an oddly entertaining way that felt real, felt genuine. When watching the characters loudly exclaim the issues of society, it’s not the writers telling me that patriarchal attitudes make life as a woman difficult, it’s someone’s mom venting to her friends, it’s raw.
The movie very loudly exclaims the issues of American, hell, Global patriarchal issues and the division it causes in men and the problems it causes women. Any system in which one group is the one in control inevitably oppresses the other while creating mass expectations for the oppressor that in turn are a source of anxiety and depression. Being in the position of power in turn chains us from any form of self-expression and creates societal expectations for the oppressor group. We refer to this issue in men as toxic masculinity (TM).
This is the opposite side of what we’re going to call Testosterone Poisoning (TP). TP is a voluntary and conscious thing, me taking action to look like a refrigerator with limbs because it’s what I want and it’s what makes me happy is entirely different to (TM). TM is doing things not because it’s what makes me happy, but because of the societal expectations that have been imposed upon me. To put it in layman’s terms, TP leads to himbos and TM leads to Andrew Tate. TP is self-actualization through masculinity, being masculine is your personality, you show up to the party driving the biggest fucking obnoxious vehicle but still give the right of way because in your meathead brain God has constructed you to be the epitome of goodness and virtue. You are the second coming of Christ with 3 scoops of protein. TM is none of that, as it fails at the act of self-actualization and instead follows the concept of conformity, you are no longer Todd, you are a man.
Which leads to my next point, why is that bad? It’s the dissolution of identity. Mike works out because he’s Mike, he likes lifting heavy objects because it’s a way for him to cool off after work. Todd works out to pick up chicks because some dude on the internet told him women like huge arms(which studies have actually disproven, women actually prefer you have a massive dumpy) and that he needs to have sex to be a man. I’m not going to say much other than Ken himself doesn’t actually like the image of what a man is in a patriarchal society and states he didn’t even like it at all nor that he found joy in it. The expectations of society to fit in to a specific gender norm/expectation made him unhappy, even if he was in a position of power. Combating the issue for women is just as problematic, though. Barbie and the mother acknowledge this in the end, as Barbie realizes that following these societal expectations of what female empowerment are accidentally have become her own chains. Society itself is a prison that we created ourselves because every idea of what we should be is shoved down our throats. You cannot be happy with yourself because of society's own expectations and fighting those expectations confronts you with more expectations of what the counterculture should be. If you’re a woman, in any position, say astronaut, you’re no longer just an astronaut. You’re a role model, you’re someone that all little girls should aspire to be. Anything you do will be judged because the society we live in simply does not want you to succeed.
Being happy with yourself in any society that does not see all as equal is simply not acceptable. As a man, you have to fulfill certain requirements to maintain that image of masculinity because it's expected of you, you are not yourself, you are a man, and you should act like one. As a woman, don’t you dare step out of line or we will find faults in you in every way possible. Don’t be single either, because you “aren’t complete” unless you’re in a relationship. Think about that for a second. Consider how many people online think that all their problems will be solved by having someone in their life and think about how many times you’ve heard the line “You complete me” in film. Again, society expects things from you, that you can’t self-actualize until you’re in a relationship. You’re not allowed to be happy until that American Nuclear Family ideology happens, because that’s what a happy ending *should* be, but is it? I’m not going to answer that for you, but finding out that I’m a massive Bible-Thumper and High Fantasy nerd did more for my mental health than any relationship I’ve been in.
I’m going to take a minute in regards to Allan(Michael Cera). Allan is perfect, Allan doesn’t abide by the gender norms, he is not “a man,” he’s Allan. Allan, if anything, is disgusted by the societal expectations of society and finds happiness in staying Allan. In a place where all the Kens choose to adopt the same personality, Allan retains himself as Allan and chooses to escape because that society is detrimental to his own self-being. I relate with Allan, it’s hard not to. Young boys are told not to play with dolls, like the color pink, or even grow their hair out sometimes, because it’s simply not “manly.” I’ve grown up with that, I’ve been told that having my hair at chest length is too girly and that I should cut it or even shave my head because that’s what guys do. Thankfully, there’s been a change in that, but you can see where I’m going with this. The patriarchy sucks. It’s a prison, for both men and women. Individuality is dead and the patriarchal attitudes don’t allow for people to exist for who they are, they must conform.

Now that we’ve gone through that, let’s talk about Oppenheimer. I like to think we are all good, that no human is evil, but rather misguided, corrupted by the society in which we exist. Wars are never about good versus evil, they are conflicts of ideology. We can definitely argue that one side is “evil,” but any villain never considers themselves as such. No sane man would ever kill another willingly, yet, in war, it happens. We dehumanize the “enemy,” they are no longer people, they are rats, they are roaches, they are vermin. We do not kill, we eliminate the problem. War does not make heroes, it makes monsters.
Alfred Nobel invented dynamite for the sake of improving safety conditions in the creation of canals, but was labeled a “merchant of death” by the news as his explosives were used for war. Richard Gatling invented the gatling gun believing that it would diminish the need for large armies. Oppenheimer led the Manhattan Project with the idea of creating one as a deterrence against the Nazis of ever using one on the basis of mutually assured destruction.
Oppenheimer fell into the same problem as his predecessors. He had revolutionized wars.
In one scene, they are discussing which places to target with nuclear weapons. Kyoto is immediately stricken off the list. Not for any particular reason other than one of the individuals there really likes vacationing there. The deaths of hundreds or thousands isn’t the problem. The problem is creating an inconvenience. The Japanese did some horrendous things during WWII, but what do random civilians have to do with anything? Nothing, and that was all they were worth. They are set pieces, they are not even a number.Their lives do not matter anywhere near as much as someone’s vacation being ruined. The atomic bomb created a massive gap in power, one so great that the so-called enemy isn’t even dehumanized, they are not even ants. Ants at least are knowingly exterminated when seen, but the lives of the Japanese people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren’t. War does not create heroes, it makes monsters.
The invention of the nuclear bomb created an arms race that the US is still economically recovering from. It created a world in which a fight between major powers dare not target each other out of fear of complete annihilation. A world where it’s no longer about strategy, manpower, or ideology, but who has the biggest bomb and how many of them? Oppenheimer and the researchers in the Manhattan Project had created a world in flames.
Both movies show that every act of villainy or evil is something we have fabricated. That much in the same way God has created us in his image, we have created the Devil in our own. We forge the same chains that bind us. The ones we use to dominate others, end up around our own necks. Every good intention paves another brick towards our own personal Hell, one we have already built. We’re just finding our way back home.

I really do think the Barbie movie is gonna be about Barbies who are currently being played with by a little girl. There’s already so much that relates to the physical appearance of Barbies(the eternally high heeled feet) and to the way they’re marketed(each barbie has a career but none of the kens do, midge and allan were both real dolls sold at some point). But what gets to me the most is 2 things.
The first is the Barbie who’s got her hair chopped off and marker lines on her face while randomly doing the splits. It’s exactly how MANY Barbies end up because a lot of little girls want to do their Barbies’ hair or makeup or just want to experiment with their toys. The important part is though, there is no Barbie who is produced that way. They BECOME that way because children play with them.
The second is the dialogue that seems so clearly like something that a child would think and put into their stories for their Barbies. The whole spending the night bit with Barbie asking what they would do and Ken replying he’s not sure is exactly what a child who’s only heard about these things but hasn’t really understood it yet would think about. Ken saying he literally never goes anywhere without his rollerblades sounds like a thing I would actually say while playing with my own dolls both because it’s objectively a funny concept but maybe also because kids think rollerblades are fun and cool. The two Kens saying they would “beach each other off” reminds me both of kids who make up their own slang because words sound similar (“beat you” can sound like “beach you”) but also kids who hear something and don’t get it quite right so they say it wrong just because they think it’s what they should do to be more like adults.
The whole thing with Barbie going in the direction of the “Real World” makes me think that unlike Toy Story, the Barbies are dolls who don’t know yet that they are dolls, and the that Barbie will find out about it once she goes to the Real World. A bit like Neo realizing he was in the Matrix all along but instead Barbie finds out she was a doll living through a little girl’s playtime her whole life.

Just saw the Barbie Movie today, and what an achievement of a film. So layered so complex, simultaneously tongue-and-cheek and angrily relevant. While many have pointed out the central themes of the issues faced by women, I think there is another message Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig, and co-writer Noah Baumbach are telling audiences. Both Gurwig and Baumbach are members of the Writers Guild of America, and Baumbach even skipped the premier in protest. I think their professional frustrations with the major studios was on full display in this film.
A live action Barbie film was first announced in 2009 by none other than Universal Studios. After the project faltered, it went to Sony pictures in 2014, with Amy Schumer slated as the lead. Yet, creative differences between parties involved lead to that project fizzling out, and the rites reverted back to Mattel in October 2018. Those involved on the creative leadership side of the film all departed. Mattel then approached Margot Robbie, who not only signed on as the lead, but helped produce it with her and her partner’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment. Robbie pitches the film to Warner Bros, who green light it, and then taps Gerwig to join the project as Screenwriter, and eventually Director. Written over the pandemic, principal photography began March 22, 2022, wrapped July 21, 2022, and was released nearly a year later July 9, 2023 to critical and audience acclaim. 14 years in the making on a property picked up and put down by many, it’s surprising this film came to fruition, and we were given a gem. It’s also clear that MANY hard working people brought this film to us.
Barbie makes reference to many other films and classic film genres. It begins as 2001: A Space Odyssey, it uses narrative voice over, The Matrix gets a shoutout, 300 (not a direct reference, but the Ken battle has a lot of slow motion that I would argue is alluding to 300), even a choreographed old Hollywood dance number. And though Barbie, being the pop culture icon that she is, could surely stand in its own limelight, so why would Gerwig and Baumbach do this? Why allude to other films in your own film, why make that creative choice? I don’t think it was just to be funny, or meme-y, the film does so much of that, to great effect, without alluding to other works of film. I think they’re telling us Barbie is also about film, and the rotten state of the film industry. From that perspective, what else does this movie do that other films just don’t do anymore, and why do it this way? Every set piece was practical, built on a sound stage, every prop was practical, every accessory crafted, every backdrop was painted and lit, and it ALL looked amazing. The transition from Barbieland to California, all of those moving set pieces (the rocket, the boat, the snowmobile) were PRACTICAL made of plywood, foam, paint, and RIGGED to move. Surely, doing that in green screen would’ve been easier, and used less materials, why do it this way? I think it’s a rebuke of the studio executives.
To me, it says cinema is first and foremost an art form, and incredible things are possible when you let your artists tell the stories they set out to tell. It can be incredibly lucrative when you trust your creative professionals to do well and properly compensate them for it. Cinema, second most, is a business, but executives don’t make films. Workers do. The workers who built that dream house, hung those lights, sewed those costumes, applied that makeup, delivered that catering, swept and mopped at the end of the day. They made a film that’s now made over $700 million dollars (and still going) for a studio that invested only $145 million. How much of that went to salaries is not public knowledge. 1,100 people were credited from cast to catering, nearly all of whom will receive no further compensation for the extraordinarily profitable film. On top of that, executives are trying to find ways of replacing some of them with AI.
Which brings us to Mattel’s depiction in the film. Though it says Mattel on the building, I think Gurwig, Baumbach, and Robbie mean all corporations. Warner Bros., Amazon, Netflix, all of em will put profit over people, profit over art, EVERY time. They want to twist tie all of us into our Barbie boxes, make us forget we have agency, make us forget that we’re not commodities to be sold. They may have the patents and the copyrights, but Barbie belongs to everyone, our experiences with Barbie belong to us. Pantone 219 c, a color on the visible light spectrum belongs to everyone in spite of what Mattel will say (I love ya Stuart Semple)! “Do you guys ever think about [the stupid rules we’re told to follow before] dying?”
I feel the film makers were truly conveying the dissatisfaction of the workers of Hollywood, people everywhere really. Proud to work hard and honestly, but angry at their exploitation. The patriarchy marring Barbie’s dreams, just as Hollywood marred the dreams of movie makers.
10/10 Go see this movie.

Why does EG Big Mac look like a ken doll with sun burn
They white washed him and made him a body shape he is not.
The simple answer is so all the characters share the same body type split into two categories (male and female) help cuts costs when making dolls. Ofc none of the make characters got any dolls and the dolls we did get of the characters were, um,

Its clear they tried to do what most other doll companies did and use one doll as a base with different colors/hair/accessories to make them stand apart. Where mlp failed at this was making the dolls as cheaply as possible and horribly missing the make on the “fashion” part (both in show and doll form, its much more noticeable on the dolls tho) They’re very much more akin to budget Monster High and Barbie dolls
The lightening skin/coat colors of characters has no excuse and shouldn’t have been done in the first place. Maybe the paler red was to avoid giving him a racist red skin look (playing it safe?) but that could’ve been avoided if they had actual skin tones and wouldn’t have been a bug deal since hes red as a pony
Years later they tried to redo the dolls and they looked much better fashion wise but by than it was already too late and more on the meh than bad side if fashion dolls

Soundtracks are a notoriously difficult thing to get exactly right. For every Black Panther there’s a dozen complete messes that do disservice to a great film or sit as a shining example of how bad a bad film can truly be. So, when it was announced that Lady Gaga was curating a soundtrack for the highly anticipated Barbie film, the internet was set alight with questions about which of those things it would turn out to be. 
The truth of the matter is that it was really none of them. 
This soundtrack features fourteen tracks and fourteen unique artists, representing some of the biggest and best names that the music world has to offer today. Covering a variety of sounds, themes, and genres, the soundtrack sees a healthy mix of some artists playing to their strengths while others took a swing at something completely new for them. The results of this are mixed, but with every mix there comes good and not so good. 
Starting with the good, there is a remarkable bit of consistency within the soundtrack. While there’s most definitely different approaches to the film’s theme present, there isn’t any song except for maybe one or two that feels out of place with the rest. Whether or not this was incidental or an intentional directive from the album’s curator Lady Gaga isn’t clear, but it lends this soundtrack a feeling of almost being like a studio album. These tracks often feel as if they belong together and were made with the same intentions in mind. The production is consistently candy coated and the hooks are frequently big and plentiful. 
In terms of individual songs, the notable standouts of the soundtrack are Dreamland by Sabrina Carpenter, I’m Just Ken by Ryan Gosling, Reality by Father John Misty, and If I Could Change My Life by Lorde. All four songs carry very different approaches to the themes at hand, but all four managed to create something that was lasting and memorable. Misty and Lorde’s songs are delicate and affecting while Sabrina’s is daydreamy, and Gosling’s is theatrical camp of the highest order. 
Elsewhere we have songs from Dua Lipa (Girls Night), Harry Styles (Never Be Yours Again), and Lady Gaga (Smile) that are very sturdy and interesting songs, though no quite hitting the high marks of the others mentioned above. These tracks are some of the most stylistically reminiscent of their creators, leaving a strong sense of these artist’s strengths but also perhaps a bit of a want to see them taking some of the swings their peers did (even if not all were successful). Smile from Gaga it has to be noted may suffer a tad from it’s placement within the tracklist. As the final song, it’s a little melancholy and unlike the film this soundtrack is for, ends on a note that is a little subdued. Had it swapped places with Lorde’s song (a better finale track for this), it may have landed with a bit more punch. 
Of course, there are also some things that are not so fantastic about the project. 
One consistent aspect about this is that the production, while cohesive, is often a little vapid and shallow. There’s not much happening in many of these songs musically and while that’s not a requirement, it does leave many tracks feeling like they’re missing something. Many artists swung for disco adjacent tracks which works for the aesthetic the film carries, but none of them went really creative places with it. 
In terms of songs, there’s a few that represent the higher end of low. They’re sort of middle of the road in that they’re not travesties but also not marks of greatness either. Fantasy by Troye Sivan and Zendaya is a perfectly serviceable song that doesn’t manage to quick stick into your memory once it passes. The production is fitting for the scene it plays in, but it’s lyrics are rough around the edges though it at times seems to be intentionally musical theatre coded (albeit maybe not executed to the best of the respective artist’s abilities). Woman by Normani is a fine track, but similar to Fantasy is not a super memorable one. It plays a bit like a Normani album track which isn’t inherently a bad thing, but can’t help but feel a little unexciting in context of this project. Under the Stars by Ariana Grande is similarly a fine song, but an unremarkable one. It slides into that camp of disco adjacent tracks that plays that field safely. 
Unfortunately, there’s a small trio of tracks that rank among the bottom here. 
The opening song, Perfect by Lady Gaga, acts as an introduction to the project and to the film and to both it falls a bit flat. The lyrics are very unrefined for an artist of Gaga’s caliber and while it’s very clear she isn’t trying to dip into her deepest writing sensibilities and offer something befitting of the childlike nature of Barbieland, it doesn’t stop the song from playing a bit awkwardly. It’s not an offensively bad song by any means, but it doesn’t get things going on a great foot. Gaga thankfully gets a redemption arc with a very solid song later. 
Daydream by Rita Ora is a song that feels very at odds with everything else. More than any other song, this feels disconnected from the film. Sonically consistent with it’s cousins on the album, lyrically this is just a basic love song that could be found on either of the star’s albums. It’s not very Barbie and especially feels out of line with the film’s tone and attitude. It’s as if this was a song Rita had left over that got repurposed. 
And finally there is Jessie J’s Pink Dreams which attempts to sample Aqua’s classic Barbie Girl to heavily, heavily debatable results. Production wise the song is capital r Rough. The vocal samples are awkwardly mixed in to the point that the song’s original beat is heard within this song and it isn’t on purpose. The vocals of said sample are also too fast for the beat they ride making the transition feel rushed and disjointed. The melodic sample feels weird and shoehorned in as well, leaving the song’s melody a little bit monotonous in its repetition. The vocals themselves frequently come off from the track, going out of time with the beat. Lyrically, the song feels like it belongs to something else entirely, as if the songwriters had not actually seen the film itself or read up much on it’s plot or themes. 
This is not a perfect soundtrack. It doesn’t sit alongside the film’s quality and doesn’t always fairly represent the material that inspired it. But it also does have hits of brilliance that fundamentally understand the intention of this and those tracks work brilliantly. It is neither a jewel in Barbie’s crown nor a knife to her plastic chest, but rather an intriguing, sometimes beguiling companion piece to the year’s biggest blockbuster. There’s plenty to love here, and some to skip, but it can’t once be called boring. 
And maybe that in and of itself is the best thing that a soundtrack could really ask to be.

Okay I’m just kind of confused at how hard they’re pushing the idea of mermaids in the Dreamhouse Adventures/Go Team Roberts/It Takes Two universe. I mean just think about how much we’ve seen them play a big part in the last few years:
2017 - This continuity starts with Dolphin Magic, which we KNOW is part of the Dreamhouse Adventures (+Go Team Roberts) universe because these EXACT versions of Barbie, her sisters, and Ken appear later when that series premieres. Plus, in some promo material, DM is advertised as a kickoff special to the Netflix series. In this movie, Barbie meets Isla, a REAL mermaid. As a side note, we can conclude from this movie that mermaids and magic are 100% part of the canon. 
2018 - Dreamhouse Adventures premieres its 1st season in May, and its 2nd in September. We get a two-part episode in Season 2 titled “Barbie Roberts: Undercover Mermaid”. Barbie and friends go to a mermaid convention on vacation. Nikki wants to impress fashionista Fairuza Ukwani, who is called “The Mermaid Queen” with her own line of mermaid dresses.
2019 - We get Season 3 of DA as well as the 1st season of its “sequel series” Go Team Roberts!.(Sidenote: I have no idea why Netflix split GTR’s 2 seasons into a separate series. Not much in terms of themes, settings, or anything really separate it from the rest of DA). Go Team Roberts opens with a mermaid-centric 4-part episode, “Magical Mermaid Mystery”. Yes, 4 parts! May as well just been another movie/special. Several stories are happening at the same time, mainly Barbie trying to figure out a shady mystery at her new job at the waterpark. The rest of her family go to Costa Rica for some whale migration that is rumored to be aided by a mermaid. Chelsea believes in it wholeheartedly, because of course she would - THEY MET ONE. But for some reason Skipper and Stacie aren’t totally on board with the idea. Again - THEY ALREADY MET A REAL MERMAID. So, Barbie solves the mystery, plays a mermaid along with her other friends in the water park’s show, and then goes to Costa Rica to see her family. Then in the end, Chelsea catches a glimpse of a mermaid helping the whales and she - for some reason - looks exactly like Barbie.
2020 & 2021 - Surprisingly enough, I think we got a break from mermaids during this time, unless I’m forgetting something. BUT THEN - 
2022 - Barbie: It Takes Two premieres following Big City, Big Dreams (2021), both of which take place in the same universe as DA+GTR. And now we get word that one of the next movies that is coming out is Mermaid Magic, again a mermaid movie that appears to be taking place in the DA+GTR+ITT universe. At the time of writing this (04/22) I have no idea what it’s about or if magic is involved again or if they’ll mention Isla at all. I kind of hope they do though.
And this is all just one media continuity! None of this is even getting into the amount of mermaid (+ other fantasy) dolls and toys we’ve gotten over the last several years from Barbie. I guess the mermaids craze just hasn’t slowed down or died yet. I mean, I’m already biased since I love mermaids, so maybe I just didn’t notice, but seriously the amount of mentions of them in the DA-verse is so weird to me.
I’m probably overthinking this but it’s hard not to notice now.

The time has come again to remind everyone that good queer representation does not necessarily equal morally good queer characters
I’ve heard that apparently there’s a renaissance of anti-Hannibal going on lately? And that + the rise in popularity of media like Helluva Boss and Killing Eve, and the addition of more openly queer charectors in existing media- from comic book based media to long-running shows like American Horror Story- I feel like this needs to be said again- not necessarily by me but I posted about it way back when Hannibal originally aired it’s finale so I figure, what the hell
Good representation =/= morally good characters
You can have both, absolutely, but you can also have them separate, and you can have all combinations of the reverse too
Ofcourse, to be clear right in the beginning, what counts as “good” representation vs “bad” reputation is going to vary from person to person, everything from life experiences to media exposure to personal opinions will dictate where you land on the sliding scale of “good” or “bad”, someone who’s consumed quite alot of queer-focused media, for example, is going to have a very different opinion than someone who’s only seen one background gay in a TV show that one time, and someone who’s a really huge fan of horror is going to have a much different opinion than someone who’s only a fan of lighter-hearted fair
With that said, in my personal opinion, the measure of good vs bad representation relies less on the character and more on the presentation of said character- less, not entirely
To get what I mean, here’s the best example I can think of:
Castiel from Supernatural is, objectively, a good charactor- if nothing else he’s morally good by most standards, certainly by the time season 15 rolls around, but his canonically queer presentation is just.... horrible, horrible representation and I’ve only met literally one person myself who disagreed with that
Cas is presented as being a really tragic figure right from the start of his coming out- the one thing in the world that would make him truly happy for even a single moment is confessing that he’s in love with Dean, even if Dean rejects him, just saying it is enough, that is..... sad
If it had been framed differently, it actually could have been very good representation, in a “I don’t need you to validate me, I’m being honest about who I am for the first time in my life and that’s enough, I’m enough” way, but it wasn’t, it was framed as pining, as “Even if you don’t love me, my acknowledging openly that I love you is enough to make me happy”, and again that could have worked if framed differently but.... it’s followed up by the infamous “Gay angels go to Super Mega Turbo Hell” thing and like.... no....
Cas is a good character who is queer, he is not a good queer character, because his existence as a queer character lasted less than five minutes and was immediately followed by literally going to what’s worse than hell for expressing his queerness
There is no way I can express the amount of levels of Bad that is, to say nothing of how Dean treats the entire experience for like.... ever... from there on out
But now let’s look at Hannibal, who is objectively a pretty bad character morally- he’s stupendously written but yeah I mean look the dude eats people there’s just no getting around that
But I would argue that he’s excellent queer representation because of how he was presented
Hannibal’s sexuality is never defined, for starters, there’s never a “very special episode” moment where he has some long-winded coming out speech, in fact we don’t quite know how he identifies but because he’s written so artfully we don’t really need to, his exact sexuality doesn’t feel like it needs to be known because, frankly, not much personal information is known about Hannibal anyway, and sexuality feels like one of those arbitrary things that he wouldn’t really care about defining
And that’s the other thing- he’s far from sexless and yet he places no emphasis on sex, he isn’t hypersexualized but he also isn’t being kept as a Ken doll to preserve the message of gay purity (because I don’t know apparently there’s a Thing some people have about how gay people aren’t allowed to be sexual???) he’s just... a person
And that’s really what it comes down to that makes him great, he’s a person first and queer second... or third.... or fourth or fifth.... it never defines who he is, it’s just part of who he is, and regardless of your opinion on Hannibal specifically, I think that is something most queer people strive for in representation
It’s great to have stories that are focused on queerness but it’s equally exhausting to only be able to have characters who’s lives revolve around their sexualities, it’s nice to go into media and go “Oh that character that I already like for these reasons is also queer, that’s so cool!”
Hannibal also skillfully side-steps stereotypes, despite falling into the category of being “polite, thin, and neat”, despite loving fine wine and fine art and fine culture, he never feels like a flamboyant theater kid with a decoration-diploma, wich is how alot of queer characters in this category can feel
His story is about alot of things and his relationship with Will is at the center of much of it, but that relationship didn’t become explicitly queer until the show was almost over- not because it was sudden or poorly written but because it was a slow build up, wich is also refreshing, as alot of times it feels like queer characters are made as explicitly queer as they’re allowed to be as quickly as they’re able to be on screen so that the show can grab those important Representation Brownie Points from episode one and either introduce a Manwhore or a Uhaul Lesbian right away and just kind of leave them in that trope until “someone comes along and changes that” or whatever, I don’t even know what straight writers do half the time, but Hannibal- as a show and a charactor- doesn’t do that, he’s just allowed to exist and tell his story, and THAT is good representation
With the heavy-handed example over with though, I want to tackle the biggest part of this entire “debate” that makes me interested in it:
Queer people are allowed to be bad people
Queer people are allowed to be lazy and unattractive and non-political and angry and jealous and yes, “bad” and evil too
Wile I DEFINITELY prefer to have morally good characters- especially after literally a century of rarely getting more than The Evil Homosexual stereotype and all it’s kin- I also don’t like the direction some people are taking this where queer people are only “allowed” to be 100% morally flawless and good and righteous at all times because it’s just so unrealistic, and because it does the exact same thing that the opposite stereotype does: Puts queer people in a box, makes us a decoration for the straight cast so that the creators get Representation Brownie Points and can’t get yelled at on Twitter, and treats us like we’re some other species (and not in the cool way like werewolves but more like... well, decorations, as I’ve said before)
And if you’re worried about the way straight-cis people perceive us due to seeing evil queer characters, you should be equally worried about how they perceive us seeing nothing but morally flawless ones
I could get into An Entire Thing about the history of Straights trying to turn queer people into what they want us to be and present an inaccurate depiction of us to their brethren for their own benefit but I’ll make it relatively simple
The old way of keeping The Queers away from their Innocent Straight Children was to turn us into villains so that we would be ashamed of who we really are and hide ourselves and pretend to be The Good Christian Folk nextdoor and not get overly political or loud or different

By sterilizing queerness into something they find more “acceptable”, they’re doing the same thing they used to, but now through a lens of “Aren’t you happy you get what you want? You can get married now! You can hold hands in public! Just make sure not to do any of that other crazy stuff you people get up to and you can stay at the Civil Rights Table :)”, we’re still not “allowed” to be sexual human beings, it’s just framed in a way that makes us feel like the people shunning us are on our side wile those same people are still in the corner going “Just don’t kiss in public ok?”
And I could go On about this for some time but let’s get back to the point-
Queer people are three-dimensional people and we should be allowed to be so, we should be allowed to have characterization outside of The Gay Love Interest and The Gay BFF and The Gay Butler and so on, outside of the stereotypes being imposed on us
That’s one of the main reasons I love Yuri On Ice so much, and love Batwoman so much.... and one of the main reasons I love Hannibal and Harley Quinn and Helluva Boss and Killing Eve so much, all of these things star queer characters and queer relationships to different degrees (Batwoman, for example, makes a MUCH larger point and political stance about queerness than, say, Hannibal) and they’re all about something other than queerness too, the charecters are three-dimensional and they’re not built around their sexualities or side peices for straight people
And none of them are PUNISHED for their sexualities either
Going back to Castiel earlier, stereotypes are hardly the worst of our worries when Burry Your Gays, Gayngst Induced Suicide, and Gay Guy Dies First are still alive and well- among others
From Frank N’ Furter in Rocky Horror Picture Show to Tara in Buffy The Vampire Slayer to, oh look, it’s Supernatural again with not just Cas, but also Charlie, and even arguably Dean (but that’s a much longer story for a much different time) and many many more... sometimes just having any gay charecter live through a franchise is enough on it’s own- setting the bar awfully low there but it’s still hard for a shamefully large amount of franchises to step over
In some cases like Tara, it can be pretty decently argued that the death has little- if anything- to do with queerness, but in examples like Cas and Frank, it’s pretty blatantly obvious, especially when the other queer characters in their respective franchises didn’t exactly fair well either....
Matt Baume put it best when he said that until recently, you had to choose if you wanted your only source of representation to be dead or evil, and most people chose evil
Now-a-days that’s clearly not the case as much but there’s still a heavy enough flavor of it there- and villains are just part of gay culture, dating all the way back to prohibition, queer people identified as outlaws because we literally were, so pirates and cowboys and other anti-heros and villains became a staple of the culture that’s still very much alive to this day, thus leading to another point: Identification
Straight people can identify with pretty much whoever they want- from superheros to princesses to any and every kind of villain
Tony Soprano is a horrible, horrible person but is notorious for being beloved among straight white males because he’s a projection of who they want to be- powerfull (and wealthy)
Stolas from Helluva Boss actually presents a pretty similar power fantasy, he’s part of a family who lives outside the larger part of the law, he can kill (nearly) anyone he pleases, he’s physically and socially powerfull, he’s wealthy, he has a nuclear family, he gets to screw around with whoever he wants with the only one taking issue being his wife, the only real difference is that Stolas is queer (and much more fashionable... and pleasant)
Queer people should be allowed to have those power fantasies as much as straight people are
Speaking as a bisexual female myself, I absolutely ADORE Villanelle from Killing Eve, I really don’t care that she’s a bitch or has killed an uncountable amount of people, it’s fun to project on her, and seeing a very flawed woman fall in love and be vulnerable and open herself up to a relationship and get that relationship with another woman is AMAZING to me, that doesn’t make the relationship it’s self healthy or good, but it’s still fun to watch and plays further into that identification
I love Korra and Asami from Legend Of Korra, they’re a sweet, wholesome relationship between two sweet, wholesome characters and I adore them... but I’m allowed to adore Eve and Villanelle too, even if the relationship is toxic and the characters have baggage and Villanelle is literally a serial killer
Ofcourse enjoying something doesn’t make it “good”, I enjoy alot of trash B rated (and C rated) horror movies too, it doesn’t mean I think they deserve Oscars (if that’s really the measuring stick we’re going to use), but I think when it comes to representation, it’s important to distinguish the difference between good queer character and a moral queer character, they just... aren’t the same
Light Yagami from Death Note, Bill from Kill Bill, and Joker from Batman are all just... horrible, horrible people, there’s no doubting that, they are morally terrible... but my god are they fantastic charecters- they’re interesting, they’re three dimensional (even if only occasionally in the Joker’s case), they’re well written and complex, there’s a reason why they’re iconic and why they’re still talked about decades after their introduction into the world, they are GREAT characters who are morally bad, and characters like Hannibal and Villlanelle are in that boat too, they just so happen to be queer- and there’s what it all boils down to
People being queer, not queer people
Some of the most beloved examples above like Yuri On Ice and Legend Of Korra are praised for being about people who are queer, people who have stories focused on other things and are just allowed to exist without their sexualities defining them, and the same should be said and appreciated for villains who are queer too
In an age where so much queer-focused media is about tragedy (the period lesbian dramas and Gayngst teen media for example), and so much of it is focused on the same exact aspects of queer life (coming out, dating around, getting or being married, but mostly coming out), it’s great to have characters who just so happen to be queer without those things being the center of their storylines- and without them being canon fodder or the Gay BFF, or being a terrible stereotype from the 90s that just won’t die...
And that by no means is to say you have to like these characters- not at all, there are PLENTY of objectively good/well-written queer characters who I don’t like for whatever reason- but to call them bad representation just because they’re bad people is sweeping ALOT under the rug
And I know I’ve harped alot on avoiding queer-centered storylines like coming out stories and relationship dramas, but those are fine, they have their place just like everything else, really, they just don’t need to have the only place- that does a disservice to so many other types of queer stories- for the heroes and the villains, because morality and goodness have nothing to do with one’s sexuality, just like one’s sexuality has nothing to do with morality and goodness
