this Bible has been with me a long way. Since I was 19, and I'm 34 now. just wow. across the oceans, across the country, in singleness, in marriage, in motherhood. it's still one of my favorite translations. (NIV 1984) thank you Jesus for saving me.

I am reading the bible (not religious) this morning was Matthew 6. Jill R needs to read that over and over again

Here's a comparison of Matthew chapter 6 (verse 1-6) from the KJV Bible (the Rodrigues family version of choice) and the NIV Bible (most common version):

KJV is on the left, read that and tell me Jill Rodrigues has any idea what even half of that means.

1 Peter 5:7 - “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

2. God blessing me with high grades from school, making it on the dean’s list, and having memorable diplomas + awards from my school

Colossians 3:23-24 - “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

3. God freeing me from the new age spirituality (such as manifestation like God, tarot + oracle cards, etc.)

Once the news that Zondervan was in talks to print this Bible came out, several Christian authors who had published with them approached me about publicly opposing the deal.

All of my books, so far, have been published through Zondervan, including my forthcoming book The Spirit of Justice: Stories of Faith, Race, and Resistance.

I was eager to join in the protest.

The effort to stop the deal included an online petition that said,

Zondervan/HarperCollins has a been a great blessing to Christian publishing for many years. But a forthcoming volume damages this fine record. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 Zondervan has licensed releasing the "God Bless the USA" Bible that will include the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence and pledge of allegiance, in addition to the lyrics for the song of the same name by country singer Lee Greenwood., “God Bless the USA.” This is a toxic mix that will exacerbate the challenges to American evangelicalism, adding fuel to the Christian nationalism and anti-Muslim sentiments found in many segments of the evangelical church.

The campaign to stop Zondervan from printing the “God Bless the USA” Bible also included a letter by Shane Claiborne of Red Letter Christians and several other Christian authors, including me, as co-signers of the statement.

The letter read,

This customized Bible is a reminder that the “Christian industry” must do better to stand against the heretical and deadly “Christian” nationalism that we saw on full display on Jan. 6.  It is like a spiritual virus, infecting our churches, homes and social institutions.  Just as we take intentional actions to stop the spread of COVID, like wearing masks and staying six feet apart, we must take concrete steps to stop the spread of this theological virus.  

The letter continued with a theological and pastoral word about the Bible.

We don’t need to add anything to the Bible. We just need to live out what it already says.   And if we are to be good Christians, we may not always be the best Americans.  The beatitudes of Jesus where he blesses the poor, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers – can feel very different from the “beatitudes” of America.  Our money may say in God we trust, but our economy often looks like the seven deadly sins.  For Christians, our loyalty is to Jesus.  That is who we pledge allegiance to.  As the old hymn goes – “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness/ On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”  Our hope is not in the donkey of the Democrats or the elephant of the GOP… or even in America.   Our hope is in the Lamb.  The light of the world is not America… it is Christ.

Our endeavors were successful, and Zondervan did not enter into an agreement to publish an NIV translation of the “God Bless the USA” Bible.

That’s when Kirkpatrick decided to pursue a King James Version (KJV) of the Bible because that translation does not require copyright permission in the US.

it's always so jarring seeing/hearing the rod kids. i know this has been discussed ad nauseam but i feel so bad for them and how robotic and uncomfortable they look all the time... like it's hard for them to speak or something... also, do christians really believe people in the OT knew "prophetically" that jesus was gonna save them in the future like wtf??? i've never heard that before (#jew) and i'm so confused with fundie logic... send help pls

Yea I totally agree, I watch them a lot and it's still so bizarre to hear them all speak when they're in performance mode. They get this deer in the headlights look and their voices become so unnatural and weird (and high-pitched if it's one of the girls).

Also yea 100%, there are prophets in every version of the Bible that I'm aware of and prophecies are all usually related to the coming/execution of Jesus (so most are in the Old Testament, my brand of Christianity believed that Jesus was the last prophet). David in particular is a big figure because most Christians believe that Jesus is a direct descendent of him (or as direct as you can be after hundreds and hundreds of years). KJV adherents like the Rodrigueses also usually believe that David wrote a lot of the Pslams and speaks prophetically about the coming of Jesus through them (authorship of the Pslams is more disputed in the NIV Bible and academic theology world as well as in Judaism iirc, but correct me if I'm wrong).

I grew up in a church that focused on the NIV and they'd tell us stories about the prophets but it was less of a deal than I think it is in KJV-focused churches which are more into the fire and brimstone-y aspects of the Bible. And then you have sects like Mormonism who take the concept of prophets and run with it into the 21st century, but that's a rant for another time lol.

love using my knowledge of the bible to write fics. don't so much love having to look up every verse i want to reference in king james version instead of whichever of the three other versions i memorized verses in because if this character is 27 in ~2012 he definitely didn't grow up reading the berean study bible

#one thing about me is i did in fact memorize a very large amount of bible verses growing up #but they span from old niv to new niv to esv to bsb when it comes to which version it was in #and sometimes i had to memorize them in more than one ! #unfortunately i just KNOW nathaniel is a kjv girlie through and through #which is fine for the most part but ugh some of these verses just flow so much better in other versions #not that the prose style matters for the actual bible but i'm trying to make MY prose sound nice #and then i have to stick a clunky kjv verse in there when i know esv sounds so much nicer 😔 #i AM aware this is such a hyperspecific problem to have and no one actually cares but i'm still going to complain #also you can quote me on hawthorne being a kjv girlie #i am definitely the only one assigning specific bible translations to characters. but i'm RIGHT #hello grace here
