Okay, so when Dick Grayson is in Civilian Mode, he has pretty wavy hair when it's long.

Those are waves!!!

But as Nightwing he is often (not always) depicted with pretty straight hair when it's long. We do have confirmation that The Whip Tm (his super long ponytail) isn't all hair, but it is still all of his hair.

My conclusion: if he has time, he straightens his hair before going out as Nightwing. In emergencies he does not take the time to do so.

nightwing (1995) #1-4

this miniseries unfortunately represents a pretty rough start to the solo title career of one of my favorite heroes. i get how they arrived at the concept. having dick question whether he wants to keep being nightwing, and also giving him something to investigate that ties into his parents' death, are both things that make all kinds of sense for establishing who nightwing is separate from batman or the titans.

but taking that idea and pivoting it into making up a country in the global south to be racist about sure is... a choice. and i get that that's functionally similar to what they did with bane's origin story and that i was less critical of that, but i was less critical of it because it was more well-written. the setting & characters introduced here didn't really have much going for it at all other than racism (for flavor!). we're never going to see any of these characters again, this isn't going to inform dick's character going forward (thank goodness), so it was all a pretty pointless exercise.

i get that the overall idea here was just to try on writing a solo story for nightwing, seeing what that would look like. and some (some) of that stuff worked, and i'm glad for that knowing what his solo title would eventually grow into. and o'neil isn't a bad writer, he's responsible for some of my favorite early issues of the knightfall arc. i just think he could have done literally almost anything else with the setting & antagonists for this miniseries and it would've been better.

the one saving grace here is the genuinely touching scene between dick & bruce that closes the last issue. i know i'm an easy mark, but anytime bruce & dick have a genuine father/son moment that they explicitly acknowledge as such, it brings a smile to my face.

So tired of comics where Dick feels like he has to reassure, apologize, and reconcile with Bruce. I want more comics where Bruce takes actual responsibility for his actions and apologizes clearly, sincerely, and extensively to Dick. And without expecting Dick to automatically forgive him just because he apologized or expressed affection.

the classic body builder physique jiménez gives dick is SO funny to me because it makes him look so female love interest coded, complete with unreasonable hour glass figure and booty-out poses

like ok i'm gonna start with a comparison between how he draws dick vs how he draws selina

there's that same!! exaggerated curve at the waist

the rest under the cut bc this is gonna be long—i'm pulling mostly from batman (2016) #137-138 (i've been keeping up with gotham war lmao)

he gives them the same sort of broad shoulders that taper down into a tiny waist

FURTHER, this is technically where dick's pecs are in comparison to selina's curves:

HOWEVER something about the way jiménez draws dick's lats also creates a curve lower down his torso that mimics the shape of selina's tits:

this exaggerated tiny waist is even more striking in comparison to how he draws other male characters

like don't get me wrong, he definitely favors a broad shoulder to slimmer waist sort of build, but never to the extent he goes with dick

take bruce and tim from the same chapters:

their shoulder to waist to hip ration is a lot more equal, they've got much more of an rectangular build, the curve in at the waist/hips is gentle

and i swear jiménez chooses poses to exaggerate dick's tiny waist (not quite booty-out poses but the same sort of vibe)

I’m not a big fan of Nightwing (1995) but I’m in love with Dick’s hair right here. One of the best things in the entire comic. He has a mane.

Aquaman 2! I haven't seen the first one but I thought it was really fun. It felt like. It was made for women? Which is a weird thought to have during a film but I noticed the lack of male gaze and was sort of transfixed by that lack. The themes of the movie were fun and it was very eventful with tons of shit happening, which was a blast.

'The Adventures of Superman' the 1942 novel (1995 reprint version). I'm still just in the beginning parts but I really enjoyed its depiction of Krypton. It's wild to be reading the first superhero novel.

I also pulled out the FE Chess zine i have, but I haven't actually cracked it open yet. Both are in my 'active reading pile' on my nightstand :)
