My kids keep trying to "bring me to God". via /r/atheism

My kids keep trying to "bring me to God". I am a happily divorced dad of 2 wonderful kids (9F and 8M). Their mom has made the life choice of fundamental Christianity. They are at the age where they have started trying to "bring me to God". It started with me stating something along the lines of "not everyone believes in the same thing. We all have our own journeys, and mine is not with God/Jesus/Christianity". Needless to say, they haven't stopped, so i started just dismissing the convo or saying "im not talking about this. My kids kept pushing at times, so my responses have turned into "A 'God' that teaches that your uncle is going to hell for who he loves isn't a God/deity that is worthy of mine, or anyone's praise". I am realizing that is not the best way to present points to kids. Are there any recommended talk tracts or kids books that can help explain the position in a.... genter manner? Entry #2 - The World of Etsy

Okay, so you’ve thought about it, really considered the questions from my previous post and have decided you’re all in! You’re going to do this Etsy biz and you’re going to do it right! Now what though?

Become Etsy!

A good way to think of Etsy is like an old small country town. The internet is the city and you can stop by Etsy for a nice slow visit. Chatting up with sellers, getting to know their products/work, the story behind them, what’s been said about their service/products, find things you haven’t seen in years or items you never knew you wanted. I mean seriously, it’s an entire world and it doesn’t move at the pace of other sites. Which, coming from the country, it’s a nice reminder of how simple things can be and how much more enjoyable life is when we take the time to care about what we are doing and the people we are dealing with. So keep this in mind throughout your Etsy experience, buyers care about thier products and want the very best and they will spend hours, days, weeks, months to find it!

Serious Etsy buyers want to know they aren’t just another number and that you aren’t just another mass-produced wholesaler. While wholesalers do well on Etsy, the items they sell are still one of a kind and boutique style. Which manages to stay within the boundaries of the personal shopping experience Etsy buyers demand!

Don’t think like a Seller, think like a Buyer!

As you muddle through Etsy, view forums, articles and a bunch of random and different listings. This helps you get acquainted and have some what of an idea how you want to “brand” your shop. Be sure you look at both established sellers and new sellers. This puts you in the customers shoes, enabling you to brand your shop around the mindset of a buyer. Make note of what you like and don’t like so you can be sure to include or not include such when opening your shop. Be sure there are shops of both in your niche as well. Sizeup the competition! I suggest doing this before “getting on the other side”. Once you see how things work in the back end, mindsets shift and you begin understand why certain shops may have taken short cuts. Looking at it from a buyers view before tainting your mind really helps you keep your goals in mind for ease of the customer (not you).

It’s important to remember, Etsy is not eBay or Amazon. Your time is just as much capital in Etsy world as your money or product! As I mentioned in my previous post, for the majority of sellers it takes months just to make a sale...eh-yeah. Months! 🤦‍♀️ One post I read in a “team” forum was someone giving advice on how to make a new seller’s store better. She’s like “...from someone who made 10 sales in the first two months...” Hang on now... What?! I started laughing until I realized she was serious!! Only 10 sales in 2 months! Gees! Good thing I am serious about selling, otherwise there goes my entire start-up wasted!

The thing is, from what I’ve read anyway and so far checks out, you won’t make any sales until customers see that you are a “serious” seller”. Yup. Serious. Lol. Etsy customers want to know you’re a real artist or at least specialize in what you are selling, and that you take it seriously! So don’t expect to post a few items and make a sale the next day (which I won’t lie, I thought that lol). It’s all about analytics and Etsy has a lot of control over product result placement. Which honestly isn’t bad, but to get spots they charge you for “ad placement”. It’s a little pricey sometimes too, like $1.50 a click. Adds up fast when you don’t have sales. I feel like it’s worth it, but I’ll cover it more in depth as we get into marketing. For now, don’t waste your time on ad placements if your listings are 👌top notch. Otherwise it’s wasted money.

After you see first hand what you want and don’t want in your brand, come up with a business plan. Think about the following:

Feel you want your shop to have (aka preppy, homey, funny, etc). Really take the time to make it who you are!

Of course, if you haven’t already, think of and decide on your product. I’ll go in depth on product selection next post, but for now think about how many different things you want to sale, i.e. digital down loads and vintage stuff, personalized home decor with personalized apparel, etc. If you want to sale more than one type of item, think about what goes best with the craft your making. Remember, people want speciality items, so be sure it’s stuff you can be a specialist on!

As you think about products, also think about time and price of each item, shipping/construction time, etc.

In addition, add a marketing plan to your business plan. I’ll go over marketing in another post, but for now decide how you want to market. I.e. what social media platforms to use, if any. Outside advertising with flyers, etc.

Begin adding up cost as well, thinking about just the outside Etsy cost of your item. I.e. material cost, your time, etc. I’ll post at a later time a more in depth cost analysis. For now, we are just getting all of our tools together so we can have everything to build with!

Another thing, come up with your shop name and a logo. Chose something that speaks of who you are!
