When I look at you,
I see no monster;
Nothing but a caring friend.
But when I see myself
The guilt fades in
And I've known it even then.
Because when my walls crash down,
And all that's left
Are the struggles I have within,
Will you think me brave
For standing up straight
Or will you hate me for it, even then?

Sokeefe total
guess what, to do this, I had to do MATH
are you proud of me?
so, Keefe has liked Sophie since page 195 of the first book
and since Sophie didn't realize she liked/Keefe had a crush on her till page 376 of Stellarlune,
KEEFE HAS BEEN IN LOVE WITH SOPHIE (AND SHE HASN'T KNOWN) FOR 5748 PAGES
YOU READ THAT RIGHT, 5748 PAGES!!!!!!!!!!
that also equals to 1 ft 6 and 7/10 inches of book
I did my math right
There is 1 ft 9 2/10 in total of KOTLC
6402 total pages
AND SOPHIE IS SO OBLIVIOUS THAT IT TOOK HER 5748 PAGES TO REALIZE THAT SHE LIKED KEEFE
(but they finally kissed so it was worth it)

LODESTAR SPOILERS!! Idk if anyone even needs that but still.
Decided to draw my second favorite Keefe and Sophie moment! Yes my second, I cant draw my first because I cant draw ogres, and Keefe fighting Dimitar would look silly without a good ogre.
Keefe throwing his neverseen cloak over Sophie right before he blows up Foxfire’s glass pyramid has stuck in my mind since the first time I read it.
it’s such a bittersweet moment between the two of them as he begs her to trust him and then leaves her confused and in mild danger. Also blowing up buildings? dope asf.

while I was re-reading the kotlc series, I might have noticed- THERE ARE SO MANY CLUES ABOUT WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN- HOW DO THEY NOT FIGURE IT OUT UNTIL THE LAST SECOND, IF AT ALL????
the book that i found to be interesting in this topic is Lodestar.
We all remember when Lumenaria fell. Right? Ok, good.
Now for those that don't remember, Gethen, Brant, and Ruy let themselves be imprisoned and then used outward channeling to crumble the castle.
Now that that's covered, I'm going to list a bunch of lines/scenes that hinted at the plan to bring down Lumenaria
I DONT OWN ANY OF THE QUOTED LINES FROM THE BOOK LODESTAR FYI
ALSO: i will list the page number for said lines, but it's from the paperback version so it may not line up if you have another version
So, let's start towards the middle of the book, where Sophie practices her outward channeling with her Coach.
page 421- "Coach Rohana tilted her head. "I suspect you could bring down a mountain if you sat in solitude long enough." "Why solitude?" Tam asked. "No distractions or activities to drain her reserve." This is vital information that helped me figure out the Neverseen's plan before it happened. This quote also drifted through Sophie's head as she felt the temors in the castle.
page 469-[talking about gethen]"He sat with his head bowed and his legs crossed, as if he'd been meditating..." HE WAS HE WAS well... kind of. he was filling his energy reserves so he'd be able to bring down the castle
page 471- [talking about gethen]"Clearly this meeting is going to be worth the energy I'm using..." He talks about his energy being depleted from the meeting, which when you reference what Coach Rohana told Sophie, exposed the fact that he was storing his energy for something aka outward channeling
page 476- [gethen speaking] "And I'll take my chances here, thank you very much. They're much better than you think." i want to scream rn. he literally is saying he enjoys being locked up in a cell with no way to feel the time pass, and running on such a messed up schedule that his body is deteriorating. they should have been more onto him after he said this
page 477- [gethen speaking] "And here's my question. Has the Peace Summit already occurred?" His question should have been another warning bell. Especially when he didn't get the specific answer he wanted, so he gave Sophie an unspecific answer.
page 561- [brant speaking to ruy] "Don't!"....."If you shield her, she can't burn." Sophie wasn't trapped in a force field, and Ruy didn't trap him and his fellow rebels in a force field because they wouldn't have been able to be arrested otherwise
page 592- [lady gisela speaking to sophie about getting keefe to leave the Neverseen] "....It's been in place for too long. So get my son back before it all comes crashing down." While this isn't a hint necessarily, it's great work on Shannon's part. Crashing down, and that's what happened to Lumenaria, that couldn't have been a coincidence.
page 635- [sophies thought while watching fintan's reaction to the ogre treaty being written quickly] "It would've been a relief-- If Fintan hadn't looked so stressed. Even Mr. Forkle seemed to notice." AAAAAA PLEASE WHY COULDNT THEY HAVE PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER FASTER
page 637: "The gala," Fintan whispered, so softly he probably thought no one could hear him." Fintan's relief that the leaders would be staying in the castle for the entire night should have definitely helped SOMEONE put two and two together. WHY ARE THEY SO SLOW OMGOSSH
*side note- it took me 30 minutes to research in the book and then write everything down so i got restless towards the end fo' sho' you can tell

So we all know you're the KOTLC queen and you write better than Shannon, but I was curious:
At what point in the series would you say "okay no, HERE'S where I re-write the rest of the books by myself"? Or would you start from the very beginning and write the entire series over again?
Oooh dang you give me too much power, dear Muffin.
But. Here's my answer.
I'd steal the series after Neverseen. Because up until that point, everything hits right. It's not super painful. It's just had a startling twist, but it's not too convoluted of a plot yet. And it gives you all the basis you need to know where we are in the story without needing too much exposition. I feel like Neverseen was the best written, and so far Lodestar has been the worst, so the shock between the two books hurts me inside. As like, a writer. Lodestar isn't bad, but so far it's actually been my least favorite in the series.
So yeah.
Keefe goes off to join the Neverseen.
And that's where I change things.

My dad's terrifying summary of the Keeper books only by name (he's never read them)
Book 1: Sophie gets kidnapped; they start fighting the bad guys.
Exile: Sophie gets separated from the group and meets another 'Exile' who helps her plan against the bad guys.
Everblaze: They're knee-deep in the Everblaze (a reference to the song he made called "Knee-Deep in the Everblaze").
Neverseen: They're never seen.
4.5 (which doesn't exist but he made it up: The Christmas Special with Sophie time traveling because of the 'Keeper Trappers' or 'Trapper Keepers'.
Lodestar: They loved this band Lonestar, but since the name was already used, they decided to make the band Lodestar.
Nightfall: After the first concert, it becomes night.
Flashback: This is where the real stuff starts. The Keeper Trappers/ Trapper Keepers are relevant. Christmas come to the Elves. They kill the real Santa Claus who is actually Godzilla in a top hat.
Legacy: The legacy of the bad guy rises up and fights the Neverseen.
Unlocked: They spend the whole time trying to unlock a door, then at the end they say "unlocked" and you never know what's in there.
Stellarlune: The bat Stellaluna kills everyone and it ends with Sophie crying (she now only has one eye) and begging to go back to the Everblaze.

Maybe there’s something seriously wrong with me but I just finished neverseen and started reading lodestar (I’m on a kotlc reread and my goal is to be done with the series before tomorrow! I’m on a sick leave so I think I can manage it!) and all I can say is: I really love the Keefe betrayal plot.
NOT BECAUSE I WANT KEEFE TO BE A TRAITOR. It’s just a VERY interesting, emotional, well-done concept. And also very morally ambiguous. Like, Keefe admits in chapter 1 that he’s helping the neverseen do things. He’s still “on their side,” but the way Sophie tries to scream for help when he explodes the office and he covers her mouth? this is really good. This is one of the best plots shannon worked with (it was best the first time, now I feel like every book ends with Keefe running away somewhere)
The way he admits to keeping watch as the neverseen burned the gate at the sanctuary. The way he also is on their side and desperately doesn’t want Sophie to be afraid. But he mimicked her voice to hand over the cache. And he mimicked Leto to trick her into being in the office when it exploded. But he also protected her from the damage……. WITH his evil black Neverseen cloak
Anyone who knows me will understand why this plot just MAKES MY BRAIN SO HAPPY. Even if I’m not happy, my brain is. I love this stuff. I live the ambiguity. And in universe, I hate how keefe’s life has transpired to make him think he’s meant to be “something else” (other than a hero) even if that’s what Gisela intended.
Anyway I had to squeal about it. @nobodysdaydreams calling you for reference even though you don’t go to this fandom bc your one of those people I mentioned who know me well enough to understand why this is so enjoyable for me
