11-Year-Old Black Girl Knocked Unconscious After Telling Racist “My Black Is Beautiful”

A community in Kansas is looking for answers after an 11-year old girl was attacked for the color of her skin.

According to published reports, 11-year old Nevaeh Thomas was playing with a group of friends outside an apartment complex near Shawnee school in Kansas City, Kansas, when an older boy began calling her racial slurs. Not one to back down, little Naveah stood firmly asserting to the bully that her “Black is beautiful”, it was then, mother Brandi Stewart told local FOX affiliate WDAF-TV, that the things turned violent and the teen struck her daughter with a pole–knocking her unconscious.

“She suffered from a concussion,” Brandi Stewart said during the interview. “She has stitches inside and outside of her cheek, she lost her tooth.”

Stewart also added that the incident has left Naveah mentally hurt more than anything, noting that racially motivated attacks are on the rise in the area–even among children as many in the small neighborhood witnessed when the 11-year old was attacked.

“Her feelings are more hurt because of the act of, the racial act. Not so much of the scaring,” Stewart continued.

“Hate speech has become the norm. Violence has become the norm. It’s seeped into our children,” Empowerment Temple pastor, Terry Bradshaw said.

Neighbors like Blair Murphy, who runs a daycare center near the apartment complex say they are shocked by the attack.

“That poor little girl didn’t do anything and now she’s been hospitalized and beaten and for what? Because she’s Black?” said Murphy.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said the 12-year-old boy is charged with aggravated battery, a felony. Howe said hate crime charges could be filed in the case, although proceedings in the juvenile system are often handled differently than the adult system.

#1 Contenders Eight Way- Pentagon Jr. vs Nikki Cross vs Buddy Murphy vs Jewels vs Zack Sabre Jr. vs Neveah Crist vs Sami Callihan vs Nikki Bella

The eight men stood in the ring. Some of them looked more confident than others. The crowd itself was going crazy in a combination of cheers and boos, although with so many people in the ring it was a bit difficult to tell who was being booed at and who was being cheered for. The moment the bell rang, people started going at one another! Nikki Bella and Nikki Cross were punching one another, both women still having thoughts about their match from a week ago. Murphy and Zack were attacking one another as well, trying to get a leg up. Callihan and Pentgon Jr. were going to town on one another, leaving Jewels and Nevaeh to lock up. The two women had a test of strength that Nevaeh managed to win before locking Jewels into an armlock! Jewels cried out as Nevaeh yanked on the arm more and more before irish whipping Jewels. However, when Nevaeh irish whipped her Pentagon saw this and yanked on the bottom rope! This caused Jewels to go tumbling to the ground outside! Pentagon smirked as he saw Jewels fall outside of the ring before turning around and being clotheslined by Sami Callihan, causing both of them to go tumbling out of the ring and fighting ringside! Nevaeh, Nikki Cross, Nikki Bella, Buddy Murphy, and Zack Sabre Jr. were left in the ring all looking at one another now that they all broke up from their fights.

Fearless Nikki decided to move first and came running out of her corner and went for a dropkick that Nikki Cross dodged, but it caught Buddy in the chest! Buddy stumbled back and glared at Nikki Bella before striking her with a punch, which she responded with a punch of her own! This went on and on until Nikki Bella started getting more momentum and caught Buddy with forearm after forearm before running to the ropes. However, when she rebounded she was hit with a hard big boot from Buddy! Nikki Bella rolled out of the ring to collect herself, clutching her face.

Nikki Cross and Nevaeh looked at each other before looking at the boys. An unspoken agreement seemed to go between them as Nikki Cross ran at Zack Sabre Jr. and Nevaeh went for Buddy! Nevaeh kicked Buddy in the gut before doing a snapmare on him which was followed by a necksnap whenever Buddy moved to get up! And the next time he went to get up, Nevaeh went for a sliding clothesline before going for the first pin of the match!

ONE…KICK OUT! She huffed, but didn’t have much time to get mad as she found her legs being pulled out from under her by Sami Callihan and him doing a suplex on the outside with her! Nikki Cross and Zack Sabre Jr. now had the ring to themselves as they continued fighting before Nikki found herself on the defense as Zack hit her with strike after strike before irish whipping her. He went for a clothesline, but she ducked under it and did an arm trap neckbreaker! The crowd cheered and booed as she looked outside of the ring at the mess of brawling people before she scaled the turnbuckle. Buddy Murphy and Pentagon Jr. had been fighting outside but was interrupted whenever Nikki did a diving crossbody!

As she did this, Sami Callihan slid into the ring and pulled Zack up for an exploder suplex. But before he could do that, Zack suddenly pulled him into a small package! ONE…TWO…WAIT! IT WAS BROKEN BY JEWELS, WHO CAME IN LAST SECOND! Zack growled as he pushed himself up and turned to Jewels. The young girl superkicked him in the gut before ran for the ropes and went for a scissors kick, but Zack moved out the way! Before she could do anything, Zack let his own leg come up in a strong high kick that had her stunned for a second! But he was so distracted by Jewels, that Sami suddenly rolled him up! ONE…TWO…KICK OUT! Zack barely managed to kick out! Zack kicked out with enough force that it had Sami stumbling though, causing him to knock Pentagon off of the ring side when he went to get into the ring. But who managed to get into the ring? Nikki Bella! Whenever Sami turned around, Bella hit him with a harsh forearm smash! Nikki looked around the ring and saw Jewels, who many viewed the weakest of the match, stumbling up. Nikki picked Jewels up onto her shoulders and did her Rack Attack 2.0 on her, before hooking the leg for the pin! Was Nikki Bella bout to win this match? NO! Before the ref could even start counting, Buddy Murphy had reached into the ring and pulled Jewels out of the ring once again! Buddy grinned and flicked Nikki Bella off, who didn’t take to kindly to that. So cocky, he didn’t realize that Pentagon had slipped behind him! Buddy was surprised when Pentagon grabbed him and did his Lungblower, springboarding off of the barricade as he did so! The crowd cheered for Pentagon as he grinned, but Nikki Cross didn’t waste any time in running at him and slamming him into the side of the ring. Jewels saw this and climbed onto the side of the ring and went for a driveby kick after recovering a bit, but Nikki Cross moved out the way and yanked her foot, causing her to get trapped in the ring! Nikki Cross began beating at the younger wrestler until she was completely submerged into the ring, and Nikki Cross smirked as she got into the ring. However, Nikki Bella then did her Bella Spear that was followed by punch after punch!

However, with Bella going to town on Cross, Zack saw his chance and ran forward and did a penalty kick right to her face! Zack quickly went for the cover! ONE…TWO…WAIT! Nevaeh had slipped into the ring and wrapped her arms around Zack’s waist. Zack shook his head as she pulled him off of Nikki Bella’s body before doing a bridging german’s suplex! ONE…TWO…WAIT! Now Sami was back and breaking up the pinfall. Sami shook his head as he looked at Nevaeh and set her up for his headlock driver. But Nevaeh managed to slip out last minute! She went to do her corkscrew neckbreaker finisher called Doubleshot, but he rolled out of the ring before she could try to pin him! Frustrated a bit, Nevaeh stood up and turned only to find herself in the grasp of Buddy Murphy! He quickly set her up for his Murphy’s Law finisher! He was halfway up when Jewels slipped into the ring and suddenly hit him with a hard scissors kick! The young girl stood up and turned, only to get caught up in Pentagon’s Pentagon Driver! However, before he could cover her Pentago found himself getting hit with a Bella Buster from Nikki Bella! The woman smirked as she crawled forward to pin him only to find herself being dragged up by Nikki Cross! Nikki Cross then hit Nikki Bella with her swinging fisherman neckbreaker and grinned! However, before she could get up, Zack Sabre Jr. came running almost out of nowhere and quick as a flash had Nikki Cross in his Orienteering with Napalm Death! Nikki Cross cried out as she was locked in the over-the-shoulder single leg boston crab and calf slicer combination finisher! With each second, it seemed she was closer to tapping as Zack yelled at her to do it! But Pentagon Jr. managed to come move up and dropkick Sabre in the face, causing him to let go! By this time most of the people were exhausted, all of them standing up shakily. Jewels, Zack Sabre Jr., and Pentagon were the only three in the ring by this point and the three of them were exhausted. Jewels was standing back and letting Zack Sabre Jr. and Pentagon battle it out. Pentagon got Zack Sabre Jr in position for his packaged piledriver called Fear Factor. And when he did this, Jewels saw her chances. When he crashed down and hit Zack with it, Jewels ran forward and caught him with a Jewels’ Crescendo spinning heel kick! Knowing that wasn’t likely to get her the win, Jewels quickly went for her Jewel’s Pearls finisher with Zack! Zack cried out as the Double Underhook Crossface was applied. However, quick as a whip Zack managed to slip out of Jewels’ arms and legs and grabbed one of her arms to lock in the Article 50 submission maneuver! Jewels cried out as she reached for the ropes, and couldn’t seem to get there! And because of using her own finisher on Pentagon, she couldn’t depend on him to break the hold! Jewels couldn’t do anything but tap!

Political

Britain officially left the European Union on the 31st of January 2020 meaning the country is now in a transition period. During this 11-month period the UK must abide by EU law while elements of the EU-UK relationship are discussed, including: free trade, medicine and aviation amongst other things (BBC, 2020). Mefé Nevaeh won’t be affected in the near future however political uncertainty is worrying.

Unpredictable world leaders such as Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán cause uncertainty, anxiety and unrest.

With countries battling the Corona Virus so differently, and with rules surrounding the virus changing almost weekly here in the UK, there’s understandably political uncertainty and unrest surrounding Covid 19 (Matei, 2020). Especially with the recent incident of Dominic Cummings (an MP) breaking his own lockdown rules and UK guidelines being extremely unclear (Murphy, 2020).

Economic

Brexit deadlines and the trade war between the US and China are to blame for the stagnation and uncertainty of the UK economy which flatlined in the last three months of 2019 and the start of 2020. Although there is slight potential for UK businesses to rebound, observers say the UK economy is still fragile with Brexit potentially causing catastrophic damage to UK businesses with or without a deal (Partington, 2020).

The impact the corona virus is set to have on the economy is unclear. However, unemployment rates are increasing with 2 million people applying for unemployment benefits in the last two weeks of March, and this number is only growing. Oil prices are at the lowest they’ve been in 18 years and restrictions have hit supply chains and the travel sector hard. Despite growth in online services like Zoom, Amazon and Netflix, the global economy is expected to shrink by 3% this year (Jones, Palumbo and Brown, 2020).

Despite all this the fashion market is still estimated to steadily grow by 4.8% between 2020 and 2024 (Statista, 2020). Both the corona virus and Brexit have meant Mefé Nevaeh needs to be really conscious and aware of the economy when launching, however this statistic is really positive as we are a fashion brand.

Social

After mental health protests at Gucci’s London fashion week show, conversation about mental health has started again within the fashion industry. Eating disorders have been acknowledged by the industry for a long time but the conversation is opening up further. Deaths of designers like Alexander McQueen and Kate Spade have recently been used to raise much needed awareness, as suicide rates and addiction cases are on the rise amongst design students (Wilder, 2019). This is good for Mefé Nevaeh as our main theme of escapism is partially there to support mental health problems amongst other issues.

Recent years have shown some of the most racial diverse catwalk shows the fashion industry has ever seen, and racial diversity seems to be on the rise. However, despite many more black models being cast, behind the scenes of lots of brands it’s a sea of white. The opportunities for underrepresented races simply aren’t there (Bain, 2019), and that needs to change.

Casualisation and not looking like you’ve put too much effort in is on the rise meaning luxury brands are having to adapt weaving in more pairs of jeans and sneakers than ever (Abtan, 2017). This is worrying for Mefé Nevaeh as we are an occasion wear brand.

Technological

AI, VR and AR are helping businesses grow by giving consumers a better shopping experience while reducing operation costs and offering new and engaging encounters. These technologies can help with finding products in store and viewing products from the comfort of their own home as if they were in store (Joshi, 2019). Stimulating all the sense is important to form emotional and deeper connections with consumers. AR, AI and VR is a step up from this that Mefé Nevaeh plans on using as we grow.

Legal

New corona virus rules mean when businesses can reopen again social distancing, PPE for staff and other rules may be in place for a long time and is something businesses will need to consider including us.

Environmental

Consumers are more environmentally conscious than ever. Despite this, only 1% of new products introduced in the first half of 2019 were sustainable. Online searches tripled between 2016 and 2019 for sustainable fashion with millennials and gen Z leading the way. The pressure on brands to deliver is high, and so is the cost and availability of sustainable materials (Cheng, 2019), but if brands want to stay relevant, they must keep up with this movement. Although sustainability isn’t our focus, Mefé Nevaeh provides care instructions to help reduce waste and make washing as eco-friendly as possible.
