A Trip to the Coast
Last week, my husband and I went down to Wrightsville Beach for a wedding. Right before we left, I was reading through my grandfather, Richard Harvey Wright Jr.’s archives and found a letter about a trip he and his family took to Wrightsville Beach in 1930.
I had to laugh at how particular my grandmother was.

The Piedmont region of North Carolina is an easy place to fall madly in love with. The extreme summer is at least filtered through the foliage-choked heights of hardwoods and softhearted pines, and the winter shiver is not known to last too long, failing to consider these recent confused seasons. The real traumatic, dangerous weather is within the southerner, who has gained and lost more in cultural transition than most other mass, vague, generic region of this nation. Which is good, for the most part. Change has been beneficial to us. For us. Because for too long the southern dream had become leaving the old homestead far behind.
Let’s awake from that escapist dream. It is time. We can not go back to the way things were, but that does not mean we can not go home. We can, and thankfully, we don’t have to travel too far to find a place as hot and cold as we are.

#Repost @thebullsofdurham (with @report.for.insta) ... 🐂Durham's Black Wall Street continues to live on through 4th generation Durhamites like @JoyeSpeight & her brother @DougSpeight. . Aside from @NCMutual & @MFBank_NC, very few of the original Black Wall Street businesses are still operating today. 1️⃣ of those businesses is Speight Auto Services Center, whose story traces back to friendship with the Duke family. Theodore Roosevelt Speight came to Durham in 1932 with little to his name, & in 1938, he opened up his own business. . As to just how little he had when he came to Durham remains a source of family debate. NCCU Archivist @AndreVann7’s book "Durham’s Hayti" states it was 83 cents, which would be $15.21 in 2019 money. His granddaughter Joye Speight recalls, . “My family has been here for 4 generations. My grandfather came to Durham from Greene County with about $11 in his pocket. Me & my brother fight over this amount—somewhere between $11 & $13 in his pocket. He started Speights Auto, which is now 1 of the oldest businesses still in existence from #BlackWallStreet. . “My grandfather, his brother Charlie, & their cousin Albert came up. My grandfather was actually working for one of the cousins of the Dukes, not the actual Dukes, but one of the cousins of the Dukes, who had an auto shop. . "He was working with them for a while. He was top salesman, top mechanic. Decided he was going to open up his own shop. That family, the Dukes & the cousin's family, actually became his 1st investors. That's how he built Speights Auto. . "The Speights have been in Durham forever. My grandfather was 1 of the founders of the Durham Business & Professional Chain, which was to help African American business owners band together, & create a sense of community, & talk about real issues, & help each other by investing in each other's businesses. It's still happening today.” . Throughout America, there were several Black Wall Streets, a term given to concentrated, prospering Black businesses starting in the early 1900s. . Three of the most well known Black Wall Streets in America were Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jackson Ward in Richmond, Virginia & Parrish Street in Durham, North Carolina. . While much of the Black Wall Street in Tulsa was destroyed by race riots in 1921 & Jackson Ward was ravaged by Urban Renewal, Durham’s Black Wall Street flourished. . Richard Fitzgerald’s bricks literally laid the foundation for Durham’s Black Wall Street, which was primarily #ParrishStreet but also included the thriving businesses in the Hayti community that was plowed down during Urban Renewal to put in the Durham Freeway. .
