Tips for boosting driving confidence in Autistic people

For some autistic people, myself included, driving anxiety can be really detrimental to your ability to get around and be independent. However, this year (10 years after starting to learn and 9 years after passing my test lol), I have been working hard to improve my confidence and whilst I still have a ways to go, my anxiety isn't nearly as bad as it was and I've driven places I would never have dreamed of this time last year.

The following tips are aimed at autistic people, but I think they'll apply to anyone who considers themselves a nervous driver.

Practice makes perfect! - if something makes you super anxious, the natural thing to do is avoid it if at all humanly possible, right? Well, it might make you feel relief in the moment, but over time this just reinforces your anxious thoughts and can make it harder and harder to break the cycle. As much as it sucks, the key thing is to just. keep. driving. Start with just short journeys on familiar roads and build it up from there. The more situations you encounter the more your skills will improve. For various reasons - including issues with visual processing and sensory overload - it's natural that some autistic people take longer to feel comfortable and confident at doing something, so just keep working at it and you'll slowly but surely notice a difference.

Leave yourself plenty of time - being late is a massive trigger for me, so if I find myself in a situation where I have to drive somewhere in a tight time frame it really freaks me out. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go, so you know you have wriggle room if there's unexpected road closures or if you make a wrong turn. This is especially important if you're going somewhere unfamiliar as you will probably already be anxious about this. Plus, if you arrive early you will have some time to regulate/decompress yourself in preparation for whatever you have planned.

Set out your boundaries - Ok driving alone but having people in car with you sends you into a flat spin? That's fine - say no to passengers for a while and then if you feel ready have a trial run with someone you know will be kind and supportive. Equally, if you find having someone in the car with you is reassuring, that can be a big help - just be sure they understand you are feeling anxious so they don't pressure you to go routes you aren't ready for. Also, some people are overconfident in their driving abilities and may try to get you to do things that are unsafe - don't listen to them! Trust your own judgement.

Set a goal - having something specific to work for can help motivate you and give you a measure of your confidence improving. Maybe you want to drive to an out of town shopping centre, or take a road trip with a friend? Just make sure your goal is realistic and you give yourself a big pat on the back once you achieve it.

Practice self compassion - driving is stressful for some people and that's totally ok. I've accepted that while I can safely get from A to B, I'm probably never someone who is going to want to drive for fun. Remember, you are in charge of your life, no one else. Whilst I'm ok driving short distances, if I have to go to another city I would always opt for public transport if at all available. I know it'll make the whole thing much less stressful for me (and is better for the environment, too). Also, if you've been trying for a while but driving just isn't for you, that's totally ok, too! It sucks that the way our society is built means not having access to your own car is inconvenient at best, but remember we all have different strengths and weaknesses, and deciding not to drive doesn't make you a failure. You can bet the minute I can get hold of a (reliable and affordable) self-driving car, my life will be made so much easier!

Remember, these tips are what have helped me personally - I am not a driving (lol) or medical professional, and I certainly don't claim to speak for all autistic people.

Current nonfiction reading is Neoplatonism by Pauliina Remes, part of Acumen's very fine Ancient Philosophies series. I freely admit that I find Neoplatonism difficult, at least compared to, say, Stoicism or Epicureanism, but Remes does a superb job of laying out the key issues the Neoplatonists faced--the ontological hierarchy, intellection vs. sensory perception, will and selfhood, etc. She also pays keen attention to the historical development of the school and demonstrates the evolving nature of Neoplatonist thought, as scholars such as Proclus and Damascius responded both to Plato himself and to the gauntlet laid down by Plotinus and Porphyry. And all this within a span of just over 200 pages (!) As a jumping-off point for further study of the topic, you'd be hard-pressed to do better.

He’s hesitant. He comes with a LOT of emotional baggage, and he’s afraid to drag you into that…so I think he’d be very hesitant to make a commitment and get married, even if he wanted to.

Physically? Fairly gentle. Sometimes he squeezes your hand a little too tight, but never on purpose. Emotionally he’s not very gentle. He remains blunt, even with you, though never with the intent to hurt your feelings.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

Not particularly, he’s a little bit touch averse…so he doesn’t hug you often. When he does hug you, he pats your back, and doesn’t squeeze you very hard at all.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

Not very quickly, you can expect it closer to the proposal date.

Ngl you were in my mind when I was writing that book recommendation :3 I hope you will enjoy it if you end up getting it! But keep in mind that because it is humorous it is not a deeb dive but rather scracthing the surface.

I will have to do a confession here that I don't read too much of finnish literature (something that I need to fix)

A general tip: try adding "selkokirja" (or selkosuomi/selkokielinen) to your search. Selkokirjat are books writen, or re-writen into simpler finnish than the original. (yle's website has a section "selkouutiset" where you find news in selkosuomi

Sorry, I wrote you a really long list, but maybe more is better so you can pick and choose.

-The moomin books by Tove Janson! Pick any one, Comet in Moominland and Midsommer Madness are my faves. They were originally written in swedish because Tove was swedish-speaking finn, so finnish editions are translations. There's also comics.

-Not Before Sundown by Johanna Sinisalo. English translation (and many other) is available of this one. This book is about a gay man called Enkeli (angel) who takes a baby troll into his house and tries to take care of it. But troll is part of a wild nature and the night. From tiny snippets we follow how this turns out. Finlandia Prize winner.

-The Unkown Soldier by Väinö Linna. This is THE Book in Finland. A finnish classic and the nation's "collective memory" of the Continuation war against Russia. Many movies made out of this one. According to wikipedia there is a new english translation from 2015, which is better than the previous but some of the localization has been critizied.

-The Purge by Sofi Oksanen. A very dark and depressing book set in the soviet occupation of Estonia. Haven't read this one yet but it is widely popular. Check wikipedia for more info.

-Ja hän huutaa: Splatterpunk-Antologia (Aaave Taajuus, 2014) I took you like violence and blood, well here's a collection of splatterunk short stories writen by different finnish horror authors. Havent read all of them yet, but the ones I have read have been... good in a way of "I wanted to be disgusted and I got what I wanted". Let me tell you, these shortstories are propably the most gruesome shit writen in finnish horror scene. All warnigns ably. You honestly just need to read the backcover. It's only available in finnish but I don't think the language will be too complex.

-Pyöveli by Anneli Kanto. Only available in finnish but it's a humortictic, grotesk story set in medieval Finland following the son of an executioner, a newly (un)happily married judge in Vaasa and a peasant determined to get a new, succesfull life.

- Magdalena Hai writes speculative finnish fiction

Some recomendations by my friends: -Ilkka Remes is a thriler writer but I couldn't find any of his works translated

-Childrens books: Risto Räppääjä -books (K makes references to him in few songs!) and Heinähattu ja Vilttitossu.

-Kepler62 by Timo Parvela (Scifi)

-Varjot by Timo Parvela (fantasy)

-Hirviöasiakaspalvelu, kuinka voin auttaa by Anni Nupponen (monster customer service), the publisher is Osuuskumma

-Leena Krohn writes horror/fantasy

Also some classic finnish books are:

-The seven brothers by Aleksis Kivi, the first novel writen completely in finnish. I read this one, at first it was fun but near the ending draged on way too long, sori Aleksi. You will see this one being referenced all the time.

-The Egyptian (Sinuhe egyptiläinen) by Mika Waltari.

-Minna Canth's plays like Työmiehen Vaimo or Annaliisa. They deal with women's position in the victorian era.

And what aspects intervene so that soul can reincarnate again? This also happens with the souls of the Yaoguai, and animals? I remember that it is possible for someone to put the soul of the dead into a recently deceased so that they can live again in one of they first jttw chapters, but I don't remember why this action was done or what king of the underworld.

What exactly happens after someone dies?

In most cases that I'm familiar with they go straight to the underworld to wait their judgment. From there depending on their karma they are either stay in the underworld to live out their good/bad karma or they are going right into their next life.

Maybe. I know some other legends do have it that spirits linger but there isn't really a set time that I'm familiar with or anything. The best I can say is that they do eventually go to the underworld.

Depends on what you are reading really. Sometimes there are certain details depending on which story or even which dynasty you are looking at. Reincarnation was from Buddhism that integrated more into Chinese mythos as time went on so kinda depends if you are looking at a story with more Buddhist mythos or Daoist mythos scattered within.

And what aspects intervene so that soul can reincarnate again?

I'm not sure what you mean by aspects but I guess maybe you mean their karma? What I've always been told is that if they have horrible karma or committed a certain crime they will be punished in one of the many hells, depending which crimes you commit. You stay down there as long as you need to but once your karma is evened out then you are permitted to go back into the reincarnation cycle. And even then you might be turned into an animal and still have to work your way up to human. Or you might go straight to human-life and just live a horrible life already planned out.

There are circumstances of people just not having enough karma in general to be humans and thus get turned into animals in their next life, but they still have to work to be a human. It's not always about karma but perhaps some other force that has them revert back to animal/plant form to regain energy if they have been hurt in their human life.

This also happens with the souls of the Yaoguai, and animals?

Everything has a spirit, from the rocks to the plants to the animals to humans. Or rather qi/spirit energy. However, it is best to translate it but all things are made from the same thing so to speak. Spirits or Soul are made from this energy and either gain energy or loose energy depending on where they are in the reincarnation wheel. Humans have the most energy and thus are prime for cultivation since they were able to make it to the human domain. Animals, plants, and maybe even objects have less energy and thus need to gain good karma so they can be reborn as humans one day so to speak. They are there because they need to heal/gain energy for when they move on to the next life.

Yaoguai are animals, plants, or objects that skip the step to gather good karma and be reborn as humans, rather, than cultivating in their animal/objects stage and gaining a human-form. Their goals are to be as human as possible and in a lot of cases immortal as well due to their extensive training. Since they are technically cheating the system this is considered bad and they have to be either killed or turned back into their natural form to live out the rest of their life.

I remember that it is possible for someone to put the soul of the dead into a recently deceased so that they can live again in one of they first jttw chapters, but I don't remember why this action was done or what king of the underworld.

Funny enough this was considered a mistake on Yama's part as he looks at the paperwork and sees that this particular soul wasn't supposed to die yet. Due to this paperwork error, he does give this soul a second chance and brings them back from the dead, however, the book does state that it won't tell how since this is an unusual circumstance and it shouldn't be repeated again.

King Yama was the one to give the order after seeing that their lives were supposed to be much longer in the book of life and death. This was a successful transfer, most likely as it had the blessing and order of the ten kings and thus wouldn't be considered the same as possession since the Dead Wife wasn't possessing the dead body but rather being gifted the body of the deceased to live out the rest of her moral life. It is a strange circumstance but it is possible is there is some errors in the death-processing system.

Would suggest you look at yourself what implies a 'ghost' and see how different legends have an effect on what it could mean.

Chapter Five

Another week, another episode to film. Today, Monday, is the start of Criminal Minds season 16 episode 9.

This week, you won't be filming a lot. Your first scene is of Delilah and Spencer then you have a another one at her work place.

You're up bright and early for the first scene of the day. The sun has just rose, so the orange and pink glow of the sky still shines above the city of Los Angeles. Fall is approaching and it's beginning to be colder in the mornings and evenings.

You throw on a lightweight cream sweater, some black ripped jeans, and you pull on white slip on sneakers. After tying your hair into a low pony, you rush out the door.

The ride to set isn't too horrible, obviously traffic is bad but that's normal. But it happens to be slightly earlier than when most people leave for work. It's just now 7am. Many cars are on the streets, and you know more will pile up by 8am.

You arrive on set around 7:45, and grab a cup of coffee before heading to hair and makeup. The fun lady with pink hair brushes out your brown locks while straightening the waves down. She makes conversation like she does everyday. It's nice how she loves to talk, because you like to listen. She does you females' hair along with Jamar, and Hannah does the boys hair and sometimes Izzy does too.

Kylie finishes up with your hair by adding gel to smooth down the pieces tucked behind your hair. It's a sleek look that really fits with your short hair.

Next step of the morphing into Delilah is makeup. Ronnie starts on your eyes with a natural brown, nude, and cream blend. He does your foundation, blush, highlighter, and bronzer before topping it off with eyeliner and mascara. He gives you a few spritzes of setting spray, and you're good to go.

You say goodbye to Kylie and Ronnie with a smile and head to wardrobe. Matthew heads to hair and makeup just after you leave. The wardrobe crew has picked out a work style suit for you to wear today. The pants are black, matching the blazer and black heels, and to add a pop of color, the blouse underneath is light blue. It really brings out your baby blue eyes.

After changing in your trailer, you finishes the rest of your coffee and head to the main part of the studio. The director talks to you for a moment before Matthew shows up. He has you mark the scenes and rehearse just a bit before starting to film.

Matthew is dressed in slim fitting dark dress pants, a light grey button up, a red tie, and a dark sweater unbuttoned over it.

They smooth down your hair again and apply some nude lipstick to your lips before the camera starts rolling.

The camera begins rolling at the cue of the director and we snap into character.

Delilah walks into the business. With her dad being gone, she now has to run this building as well before she can find a replacement. She left her building in Atlanta under the watch of the manager, which is just one aspect that contributes to her stress.

Her dad's former employees, now hers, watch as she strides to her new office. Seeing pictures of her dead father's accomplishments and pictures of her younger self stings at her chest. She sits down and begins working immediately. Delilah has so much to do.

She types away at the computer, answering emails and discussing a deal with a big business man from Washington DC. The deal should bring both businesses more money, but she isn't too sure. Her father only had one meeting with this man before his murder. Delilah plans another meeting with Mr Daker before she can decide to close the deal.

Her head begins to hurt as a flashback sneaks up on her mind. Delilah remembers the day she was kidnapped.

A man who her father had fired and got put in jail had finally gotten his revenge, using Delilah as bait. She wasn't only bait though, she was used as entertainment. He hit her and degraded her while waiting on her father to finally save the day.

Delilah remembers her father charging the kidnapper, trying so hard to take him down. The gunshot still rings in her ears. She'd watched as her father fell, holding his bleeding stomach. Tears stung in her eyes as blood spilled on the concrete floor. The FBI barged in at the sound of gunshots, and arrested the 'unsub'' but it was too late for Logan Reign. He'd lost too much blood. She was numb as a man named Spencer Reid and another agent, JJ, untied her and removed the duct tape from her lips. Dr Reid gave Delilah his FBI jacket, trying to comfort the cold, bloody girl.

The voice of Delilah's receptionist was barley even enough to snap her out of her flashback. But she looked up to see her small body standing in the doorway.

"Miss Reign, there's a man here to see you."

"A man?"

"Skinny, nerdy, awkward..." she begins to describe the man standing on the other side of the reception counter.

"Send him in."

"Hey Delilah," Dr Reid says, walking into her office.

"Hey Spencer, what are you doing here?"

He stays standing awkwardly in front of Delilah's desk. "You seemed pretty stressed out. I wanted to make sure you were doing alright. Which is seems like that's a no."

"I'm okay, Spencer. I just have a lot to do, and now I have to trust someone else to be in charge in Atlanta. I'm getting phone calls from him everyday all while getting my father's things in order. It's just... a lot."

"I'm sorry, Delilah." His eyebrows come together for a moment in a look of sympathy.

"It's fine. I guess you just have to do things yourself if you want it done right," she lets out a soft chuckle.

Spencer returns the small laugh, and looks at you a little worried. "Do you sleep?"

"I could ask you the same question, Doctor." Delilah says sort of sarcastically, indicating the dark circles under his hazel eyes.

"Touché."

The two of them talk for a while until Spencer’s phone begins ringing from his pocket. “Hotch?”

Delilah can tell it's urgent before he even hangs up the phone.

"Sorry, I gotta go there's been a murd-"

"It's okay, Spencer. Duty calls. Go save some lives."

"Go do your business stuff," he says to her kind of awkwardly. He regrets it, but Delilah stifles a short laugh.

She watches him leave then gets back to her busy work life. It was nice to have a moment to breathe and talk to someone she liked. Someone she liked that wasn't wanting to make a deal or get a raise or get another week off.

The director yells cut, and gives a few notes. He says he's going to look at the footage really quickly and see if you need to refilm it. He checks what you just filmed and says it's actually really good. He has you film one part again, then you're free to go.

You are no longer needed on set for the rest of the day since they're just filming some case things. You decide to head to Dunkin again to speak with Jess.

"Heyyyy!"

"Hey Jess!"

"What's up?"

"Just got back from set," you say. You're already dressed in the clothes you were in this morning again. Your hair is still slicked back and you left the makeup on, deciding to just take it off at home. "Ya know surprisingly, Matthew wasn't a complete assclown today."

"Oh really?"

"Yeah. He said a few stupid things before filming, but really he didn't talk much out of character. It was a nice refresher."

Jess laughs. "Well maybe he's changing."

"Haha funny you think that. What've you been up to today?"

"Just the usual. I got to work at 9..."

"Don't you always start at 8?"

"I was... preoccupied this morning."

"Oh?" You question, pushing gently for details.

"Okay so I met a girl last night, and well we hit it off. I ended up taking her home."

"Oh my gosh! What's her name?"

"Jacklyn, she's mixed and super hot. She's tall like you, and I swear she's the sweetest thing. Very kinky though."

Your eyes widen, "Oh. Lovely. I totally needed to know that." You laugh, a bit shocked.

She shrugs with a smile.

"So what does this Jacklyn do?"

"She's a bartender but she's going back to school for cosmetology."

"Ooh cool. Well, tell me if you see her again, okay?"

"Sure thing," she winks and heads back behind the counter to assist a customer.

You finish your coffee and head back to your apartment. You have no other plans for the rest of the day, and it's only 12. You decide to strip out of your jeans and go pantless while snuggling on your couch. You tie your hair up into a low bun. You cuddle up with a soft blanket and decide to watch some Harry Potter. Goblet of Fire plays while you scroll through your phone. Eventually you get too interested in the movie, even though you've seen it a thousand times, and put down your phone.

You fall asleep on the couch with your makeup still on, which bugs the crap out of you. After a short nap, you wash your face and make some dinner. Veggie burgers are on the menu for tonight. After eating, you do some yoga and take a hot bath.

Tonight, you're hoping you can sleep better than normal since you had a relaxing thirty minute bath. You crawl into bed after getting into a matching set of purple silk jammies. This week is going to be fairly boring since you're not filming as much.

Passion Flower for Calming the Mind and Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

Difficulty falling and staying asleep is one of the most frequent complaints I receive from my clients, patients, and practitioner students looking for solutions for their clients. Stress, anxiety, trouble sleeping, and mood problems are common concerns due to the high level of stress in today's world. Fortunately, foods and herbs from nature can ease stress and aid in falling and staying asleep.

The passion blossom, Passiflora incarnata, is a favorite flower of mine and those of my patients. The exotic and beautiful passion flower plant is highly prized for both its amazing visual appeal and its amazing health benefits. It is often included in sleep aids and supplements that control stress and mood.

I'm overthinking again but fuck it I'm freaking out again because I noticed something about the previews and trailers!

It's that in all of these different scenes, Jang Uk is wearing the exact same outfit.

In the preview for ep 5 we see him wearing that light grey hanbok with flowy black outer robes when Bu-yeon does their one-of-a-kind ring and it looks like Jang Uk is realizing something. He recognizes what she's doing! She keeps doing things that reming him of Cho Yeong and it can't keep being a coincidence. It can't be that she's just that good of a priestess. Like hello the last "Bu-yeon" Jin Ho-gyeong brought was a fake. Something is up.

We also see him wearing it when he was talking to Master Lee saying the line that Jang Uk took what Jin Ho-gyeong tried so hard to hide. And Jang Uk's face as he's walking away looks kinda foreboding too.

And then! I remembered in one of the trailers that he's also wearing those robes when he stormed Cheonbugwan and raised his sword at the Crown Prince.

I'm worried because I feel like it's all connected 😭. I think Jang Uk is starting to suspect that Bu-yeon is really Cho Yeong/Naksu. Then Master Lee spills the beans about what happened.

Naturally, I'm fucking worried for my fave lol and I don't want him to die. The only thing that's calming me at least is that there have been other pictures posted with him in other places like in the big Cheonbugwan fight and inside its secret room.

Which means Go Won lives after Jang Uk threatens him. Either Jang Uk drops his sword or he just injures him.

There's also that last picture where it's Jang Uk and Go Won facing each other inside Go Won's room (or at least, I think it's his room. The windows/curtains look similar to other scenes that were held in his room.) which we haven't seen yet in the 4 eps that have aired.

So we get the part where Jang Uk storms Cheonbugwan. He is going to kill Jin Mu and he will mow down anyone who tries to stop him. And Jang Uk and Go Won face down on that big center platform where Jang Uk once announced that he and Bu-yeon were married.

I think the other clothes are a hint too. Like with the Crown Prince I've noticed that when he's inside the palace, he only wears a specific outer robes that is only worn by a Crown Prince (just like I've seen in other K-dramas). The dark blue one with gold circular symbols on them.

And in this picture with the team inside the Cheonbugwan secret room, he had something else on. It's a more vibrant blue with no gold designs. It could be like those robes that he wears when he goes out of the palace. Like is that a clue? Does it mean Go Won didn't come to the secret room from the palace for that big fight? Am I overthinking again? Yes, unfortunately.

He's also wearing the same thing in the pic the actress playing Jin Ho-gyeong posted with him and Dang-gu. It's the same for the rest of them. You can even see Sang-ho fighting next to Yul with the Cheonbugwan banners overhead. And I noticed someone with Jin Ho-gyeong's robes at the bottom middle of the screen, behing some Cheonbugwan guards, that's facing them.

I think these pics are from a big climatic near the end of the series and it's gonna be between Jin Mu/Cheonbugwan and Jin Ho-gyeong vs Jang Uk, Yul, and Songrim. Idk which side the Crown Prince is gonna be in but I'm desperately hoping he'll see the light and be on Jang Uk's side.
