Ahkmenrah’s first sentence in the film is a comedic joke about his situation.

The man has been wrapped up in bandages and screaming his head off every night for over fifty years and his first line? A joke.

“You wouldn’t believe how stuffy it is in there.”

He could’ve yelled. He could’ve pinned blame. He could’ve let out some anger. He could’ve done anything and it would have been warranted because he was trapped for over fifty years.

But he didn’t. He calmly made a joke and immediately started working with Larry to save the people who had kept him trapped for all those years.

Because he’s Ahkmenrah. And he is no less than a fair, just, and diplomatic ruler.

My theory on how the tablet works!

I’ve been thinking about the tablet a lot (as one does), and I believe I’ve cracked the code.

This is going to be long, buckle up.

So we know from the 3rd movie it's blessed by Khonsu and activates under the moonlight, needed to be exposed to moonlight every so often to retain its power. The fact it's been blessed by a god implies that the Egyptian gods and their realms actually do exist in this universe. We know there's an underworld because Kah tried to open it up in the second movie. Weather other pantheons exist is unknown, but the Egyptian one absolutely does in this universe.

Since the is an underworld and thus an afterlife, I think that the tablet works by placing the soul of a person/being into the object it's bringing to life.

The whole reason the tablet was created was so Ahk and his parents could be together forever even after death, the whole point of it is to resurrect the dead. So the enchantment is one that takes the soul of a dead being and places it back into the body as long as it's nearby enough to the tablet, and under the light of the moon/ charged with the moon. I do find Khonsu an odd choice for resurrection magic, since he's not really a death god. But he is a moon god and watches over night travellers, both living and dead. So the fact the tablet brings the beings back to life at night checks out.

1. What can come to life?

We also know that objects that aren't a corpse like Ahk can be animated. Like the minis and wax figures. Not just people but animals like Dexter and Rexy. So I think the rule there is that as long as it resembles a living being, real or mythical it can come to life.

2. Who can come to life and how?

If the figure represents a specific person (Teddy, Sacajawea, Atilla etc) the tablet will place that persons soul into the figure and that person will come to life with the memories, personality etc if that person carried by the soul.

If the figure doesn't represent a particular person, the tablet will find a soul that somewhat matches the figure and use that. Like the minis. Because let's be honest there's no way the museum named every single mini and modelled them all after real people. So the tablet saw a figure of a Roman general, found the soul of Gauis Octavius who was a known Roman general and placed his soul in the figure. It saw a cowboy, and picked a soul from that same area and time period to place into the figure. The real Jedediah was actually a mountain man, but mountain men and cowboys are similar enough the tablet made that figure Jedediah Strong Smith anyway.

In the case of animals, the same rule applies. If the figure represents a particular animal (like the space monkey Abe from the second movie) it'll put that soul in the figure. If it's just a random animal it'll just put a random animals soul that matches the species and time period.

And in the case of mythical creatures, it'll create a kind of puedo-soul to fill it. Lancelot isn't actually a real person, but it is likely he was inspired by real people. So the tablet saw a figure meant to be lancet and took the soul of a knight that inspired Lancelot, made some tweaks and put it into Lancelot figure. And with creatures like the giant snake thing (I can't remember the name) from the third movie it did something similar, taking several snakes souls and giving each head one of them. Similarly, the Anubis-Jackal guards that protect Ahkmenrahs exhibit are probably pseudo-souls created using warriors/guards and jackals. Made with the intent to protect Ahkmenrah and his belongings.

With the artworks, it again depends on who or what the art is depicting. If it's just a scenery, it'll simply open up a kind of pocket dimension (like the ones Larry jumped through in the 2nd movie) that resembles the scenery.  If it's depicting a real person, it'll put that persons soul in. If it's depicting random people it'll place a soul from the time period in. As well as creating a pocket dimension of that place and time for the people to exist in.

Like the the photo of the solider kissing the nurse, it took a the souls of people from the time period and placed them into the photo. In the case of this particular photo, the subjects in the picture are unknown although some contenders exist, and are still alive. So the tablet kinda just took a random set of souls from the time and shoved them in, the man being kissed in this tablet pocket dimension photo ended up being Joey Motorola who was one of the people who invented the mobile phone. Larry accidentally created a time anomaly that day, when he dropped his phone in the painting and Joey picked it up, reverse engineering it to make the phone.

Btw Joey is played by Jay Baruchel, who is the voice of Hiccup and I can't ever un-hear him as Hiccup from my HTTYD days. So when he talks in the movie I was all "omg hiccup?"

Anyway-

3. How real are the living figures?

We know they can be hurt, as when Jed and Octavius were still in their enemies phase of their enemies to lovers arc, they whack each other up and react in pain. We also know they can eat and drink, since there's a set of advertisement skits for the 3rd movie that shows them eating and drinking. For people like Ahk, real corpses reanimated it'd simply just be their bodies reanimating and the tablets magic allowing them to function. In cases where they're missing organs, like Ahk being mummified as thus having his organs taken out or, being made of wax etc and not having organs, the tablet with simulate them. Allowing them to eat, drink, get tired and out of breath after running etc.

So yes, that means you could probably do the no pants dance with one of the exhibits because they'd have simulated organs.

But, they can't die. Not unless the tablet does. We see them start to loose life in the 3rd movie. Ahk stars to mummify and the others start to act up and freeze. But we know they can't die any other way because Teddy literally got chopped in half in the first movie and was able to just melt some wax to put himself back together. Jed and Octavius definitely should have died in that RC car crash too, but they lived. And if Jed ended up covered in sand by that hourglass, he's likely not fully die since he can't, but he'd definitely be in constant agony breathing in sand and basically endlessly suffocating. And we've established they can still be hurt, so he'd be... alive but very traumatised. Not fun.

The tablet simulates restores or simulates bodily function by putting that soul into the vessel. It's magic keeps them alive until the sun comes up.

4. Other powers.

We do see that the tablet can do some other things, in the first movie when Ahk says some commands to it and it pulls all the exhibits back to the museum. That is a power I can understand since you know, Khonsu, watcher over travellers. Makes sense the tablet can draw people to a meeting point.

It can also open portals, as shown in the second movie. Now you could argue the painting pocket dimension things are portals, which is just a side effect of brining in animated objects to life. I'd assume the only portals it can open is the underworld one, since the original purpose of the tablet was to resurrect the dead, you might need to get the dead from the underworld for that. And those painting ones which wasn't the initial plan, just a side effect.

But that's all we really see it do. So I don't really know what else it could do.

TLDR:

The tablet was originally made to resurrect the dead, being blessed by Khonsu. The tablet works by placing a soul into a vessel, allowing it life. The soul carries the memories and personality etc of the person it once was. The vessel it's in has simulated body functions. It can also draw people to a meeting point and open portals. All of this does fit with the kind of powers Khonsu would be able to grant as a moon god and watcher of night travellers both living and dead. It needs moonlight every so often to stay 'charged'. It responds to the ancient Egyptian language, certain symbols of tiles in a particular order and likely can only be activated by Ahkmenrah and his families use.

And there you go, that's my theory on how the tablet works. That's all I got for now, I'd I find anything else I'll add it in.

A'ight so I know there's this idea that Jed isn't good with words and emotions and I think that's true, to a certain extent.

He's good with words and emotions when the situation calls for it. He doesn't pull out the big speeches when he doesn't have to. Biggest example of this I can think of is in BotS when Larry apologizes to him for "not being around the last couple of years, maybe none of this would have happened."

And Jed goes in with probably one of my favorite pieces of dialogue in the entire series. "You don't get it do you Gigantor? I didn't call you cause we needed your help. Aw sure we're in a little pickle but wouldn't be the first time I had to rastle my way out of a root sack.. Nah partner, I called you cause you needed us. That fancy suit you been parading around in these last couple of years? That's a hanging suit, all gussied up but dead inside. That ain't you." That doesn't come from someone who isn't good with words and emotions. Also shows how perceptive he is and how well he reads people!

If anything between the two of them I think Octavius is probably worse with words ESPECIALLY when it comes to Jed.

When Jed asked in Secret of the Tomb "Did you ask me to hold your hand?" Octavius IMMEDIATELY denies it and turn his stoic demeanor back on. Which we know Jed sees passed with the "Mh-mhm" but he doesn't push him on it, likely because he sees Octavius has put that wall up just a bit and it's not the time or the place to try to cross it

Basically Jed is good with words and he's pretty damn good at reading those close to him to know what they need.

His own emotions are a different story

Octavius often has a very serious looking face

Almost akin to, like, RBF. And when people bring it up or make a joke about how Octavius always looks super serious all the time, Jedediah is genuinely confused. Like, "What are y'all talking about?? Oct is extremely expressive and smiles all the time???"

And everyone's just like, "Uh, okay, maybe around YOU, but to everyone else, he looks like he's one second away from telling us someone died."

Jedediah just makes Octavius go :D (only somewhat accurate prolly because Oct is pretty silly, even when not with Jedediah, but you have to pry this headcanon from my cold dead hands).

YESYEYS i tried not to turn my last hcs ask into all jedtavius but oooh boy

- they have "movie dates" watching stuff on larrys computer, but they only ever watch the same 10 movies so it usually just dissolves into them yelling at the screen. how romantic

- they both literally have no idea what theyre doing in their relationship. octavius is always way overly formal and makes every date announcement like theyre going to war or something. jed doesnt even try, he just drags octy to random places like "yep, were on a date now"

- teddy and larry are usually the ones that jed and octy go to for advice in their relationship. teddy because hes actually good at advice, and larry because his advice is usually terrible and they can laugh at him (larry tries to give good advice but he has literally never been in a lasting long term relationship. he has no idea what hes doing)

- if they ever get married, octy is wearing a skirt. not like a long one, probably a suit-skirt that goes down to his knees. i need to draw this at some point but ehh im too lazy

- larry got the suits by going through a bunch of different websites and scouring the entire internet. larry is in charge of planning food and outfits for the minis, akh plans the decorations and seating, and teddy is there to make sure the entire project does not go down in flames (need to write a lil fic about this sometime but im too lazy)

...headcanon for NATM:

for a school project, Larry got like, 200 tubes of non-stick (or stick if you wanna get chaotic) glitter of all different colors, but when Nicky only needed three, he decided to bring the rest to the museum for the exhibits to play with.

Cue very glitter-covered exhibits. Octavius and Jedediah are barely more than a big piece of glitter because there's so much of it on everyone. Attila marvels at it because it's sparkly. Ahkmenrah and Nicky draw shapes on each other like brothers do of course. Teddy and Sacagawea both playfully give the other glitter eyeshadow.

I have this very specific headcanon for human AU Jedediah:

So, the real Jedediah Smith had dark hair, right? I absolutely love that, I like to imagine Jed with the "correct" hair color sometimes.

One day I just thought... what if human AU Jed bleaches his hair? And then sometimes his dark roots would show, and he'd constantly try to hide them under a hat.

Oh and Octie would definitely help him out with the bleaching process, it'd be their way of relaxing together

Howdy! I’ve been rewording this over two days so I’m really excited to share this with you! It’s my headcanons for Al’s boys and their historical counterparts (and why I picked them instead of the other hundreds on the Outfit’s payroll)!

I’m going to start off with a little historical background because I really, really love that! If you didn’t know the Outfit was the Mob that Al and MANY others were apart of which was founded by Big Jim Colosimo around 1910. After Big Jim was murdered, Jonny “the Fox” Torrio took over control with Al and Frank Capone as his two right hand men. When Frank was shot to death by police in 1924, a lot of threats were pinned onto Torrio. Al took over officially in the next six years.

The name, the Outfit, seemed like it was started to be used in the 60’s. Before that, Chicago Newspapers usually used “The Old Capone Gang” or a mix of Ship-like names of the leaders.

There are four men who were “revived” with Al, I picture these four as: Ralph “Bottles” and Frank Capone, Jonny “The Fox” Torrio, and Frank “The Enforcer” Nitti. As I’ve stated before, I headcanon Al as 26, which plants the story in 1925.

First: My reasons for Jonny Torrio was Al’s mentor. In late 1925, he moved to Italy with his wife and mother, so the “revival” takes place before that. It would be funny, though, that it did take place after! He helped make the Outfit what it was. Legend says he’s the one who murdered Colosimo and pushed the Outfit into Bootlegging! From the Museum’s standpoint, he would be a big point to bring up in an exhibit of Chicago in 1920’s Prohibition.

Second: Frank Nitti, Al’s right hand man and the person who inherited the Outfit after Al when to jail and Ralph stepped down. He’s first cousin to Al too. It seemed like they were really close, the first gang Al joined (I think? I mean when he joined this he was 8-9) Nitti led! It was called “the Boys of Navy Street” and Al was their mascot.

Third: Ralph Capone, “Public enemy #3”, and Al’s older brother of 5ish years (and my favorite). He earned his nickname “Bottles” from the bottling plant he worked at before the Outfit. According to Wikipedia too, “family lore suggests that the nickname was specifically tied to his lobbying the Illinois Legislature to put into law that milk bottling companies had to stamp the date that the milk was bottled on the bottle”! He’s described as a bit of a prick, bullying people into getting his way, but somewhere I read (I lost the source unfortunately) he take IOU’s and not collect them from clients who were down on their luck. He played semi-pro baseball with Al and the two stuck close together till the very end. They joined the Five Points together too before the Outfit. (he also really liked horses and had a racing horse for a while)

Fourth: Frank Capone, Al’s older brother of 4ish years, and (according to Al Capone: his Life, Legacy, and Legend by Deirdre Bair) the smartest of the eldest five of the Capone brothers. He would have inherited the Outfit if he didn’t die in 1924. He’s interesting so I’ll save talking about him for later lol.

bit of an old one ( made in about november i think ) , but this was a rough sketch for a jedediah design of mine !

i mixed both his animated design and regular design , as i have things from both that i enjoy .

my hand writing is a bit messy , so below the cut you’ll find my notes on this

- his bandana in the animated movie goes above his shirt rather than below

- his shirt is still striped

- i liked his ginger hair for the movie but i prefer blonde , as it keeps him recognizable .

- his chaps in the movie are baggier / longer

- i kept the design from his belt but instead transferred it over to his gun holster . also kept his cropped vest , giving it a bit more pizazz .

- the “ scars “ on the back of his head and a bit on his face are more just for my own personal enjoyment , a callback to the real historical jedediah ( i have done tons of research on the guy ) . whether it makes sense or not wasn’t my motive , it’s just for fun LOL

Nick grows older, starts his life, while Ahk is forever young, never aging a day. - percy (@secretly-larry-daley) and i have been talking about transfem larry daley and i love her more than anything. she is my favorite thing ever. my beloved

- jed threatens to shoot anyone who misgenders her. octavius stabs peoples feet. teddy literally has no idea what trans means but he loves his daughter more than anything in the whole world

- jed has sensory issues, which is part of the reason why he covers up so much despite not really needing to. he haaates certain textures and hes super picky about what materials his clothes are made out of

- octavius is scared of dogs. this is based on the fact that dogs terrify me and i am projecting :))))

- akh likes legally blonde and mean girls. i base this 100% off of vibes. the man would jam out to world burn and elle woods is his idol.

- also based completely off vibes, i think the minis would like the original indiana jones movies. there are specific instructions for night guards on how to pull up indiana jones on the laptop when the minis get rowdy

- the minis break the laptop out of anger when indiana jones and the dial of destiny comes out because that movie sucks ass
