Today is the #NationalDayOfTheHorse, which serves as an opportunity to honor the vital role that horses play in shaping the economy, history, and essence of the United States. Horses have served humans throughout history, carrying us on their backs, tilling our fields, drawing wagons and carriages, and enriching our lives as friends and companions. Every horse has intrinsic value and deserves humane treatment at all stages of life.

Here are four actions you can take today to support greater protections for horses:

National Day of the Horse

National Day of the Horse is observed annually on December 13.

National Day of the Horse encourages people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history and character of the United States.

The domesticated horse we know today, also known as Equus caballus was introduced into North America by Spanish explorers. Escaped horses eventually spread across the American Great Plains.

Interestingly, there is a debate about the origin of E. caballus. There have been recent mitochondrial studies of an ancient horse called Equus lamei. E. lamei once populated North America and died out more than 11,000 years ago. The studies suggest it is genetically equivalent to what we know as the modern, domesticated horse. This could mean that E. caballus is technically a native species and its evolutionary origin is North America.

Aside from the anthropological debate, the horse has contributed greatly to the advancement of civilization in North America. From clearing forests for farmland and a form of travel bringing pioneers to the west to diversifying Native American’s hunting habits and rounding up livestock on ranches, the horse is embedded in American history and legend.

“A canter is a cure for every evil.”— Benjamin Disraeli . On this #NationalDayOfTheHorse I want to honor the horses in my herd. From Oldest to youngest -- 1. Streakin Iron (Nora) w/DX Nukelear Iron Man (Tony 3yo). This mare is the nicest horse in my herd. She's the mama to Tony & Hawk. Tony is pictured with her. She'll be 19 in January. I wish she'd live forever. You can let her sit for years, catch her, and she'll ride off with a kid astride her and you know she's going to take great care of them. 2. No Average Joe 022 (Avie '03). I'm fairly certain I'd be lost without him. He's honest and consistent. His soul has a fire in it like nothing I've ever owned. He's the strongest, hardest running, hardest turning horse I've ever sat on, and I've had a few. 3. Dx Jurassic Classic (Dino). Dino is a 2008 model chestnut gelding and he's my favorite go to horse for the ranch. You can rope a yearling, chase a bull, take him to a barrel race -- or grab him for a quick bareback jaunt & he's going to be his honest comfortable self. He's my real-life rocking horse. 4. Ibaflitnbird (Dolce) w/ DX Generalissimo (Issy 3yo). Dolce died this summer at age 10, but left me Issy & Belle. She was the first horse I ever bred. I was roping live cattle on her w/10 rides. 5. Dolce w/DX Dolce Belissima (Belle). I am enamored with this friendly, well-put-together orphan filly. 6. DX Nukethis Bombshel (Bombshell) w/DX EZYBRZY PNK MARTINI (Prism). She is a 7yo mare that I raised; out of Fleefoots Dakota Sun (Shuttle -deceased '15). She's quiet & kind & well, you know how I feel about Prism! 7. DX Nukeulele (Nukeulele). Zach gave me this mare after Dolce died. I've always loved her and I can't wait for her 2019 foal to be born! 8. DX And The City (Cosmo 4yo). Cosmo is a half sister to Bombshell. I have the highest of hopes she'll be my next rodeo horse. She has the same fire as her mama. And her mama was a bad ass. 9. Hawk. I need not say more. He's Instagram Famous and super kissable!
