Pokeani Villainy Ranking
1. Gen I (The Beginning)
Tumblr media
The Kanto series featured Team Rocket at their freshest, which included the Boss himself, Giovanni, as the Big Bad who took an active villainous role in the Mewtwo arc. While it took until Gen II and Johto for the arc to properly conclude, the OVA special itself is a sequel to the Kanto-based movie and is predominantly filled with Kanto Pokemon so I am including it here. We also had a number of memorable human side villains such as Damian, Nastina, Dario, Jessebelle, Keith, and of course Sabrina. Even some Pokemon aside from Meowth and Mewtwo got in on the villainy like the bizarre talking Gastly of Maiden’s Peak and the ancient demonic Gengar. And even the Orange Islands gave us some highlights beyond the TRio’s continuing antics, namely Butch and Cassidy with an even nastier scheme than before, the despicable Mayor of Trovitopolis, and the amoral yet charismatic collector Lawrence III.
2. Gen V (Black and White)
Tumblr media
Giovanni gets to be the Big Bad and take direct action yet again, and even when he isn’t present Dr. Zager and a uniquely serious and competent incarnation of the TRio are pursuing his agenda to conquer Unova. Team Plasma, especially Dr. Colress, is a formidable threat when they show up as well. There’s also Dirk from the OVA, the Genesect Army from the third movie, and side antagonists such as Leon the Dream Thief, Dr. Ferrara / Cryoganl Man and Team Vanilite, Seamus the sociopathic trainer, and the evil Chandelure and Litwick.
3. Gen VI (XY)
Tumblr media
This series gets as high as it is primarily due to Team Flare. Lysandre, Alain, Xerosic, Aliana, Bryony, Celosia and Mable, along with all the Team Flare grunts and Lysandre Lab scientists are such wonderful villains in the anime. The TRio are pretty hit-or-miss, sometimes credible and other times not, but this is alleviated due to the presence of other enjoyable evildoers across the series such as the evil Malamar, Dolan the smuggler, the haughy Princess Allie of Parfum Palace, Ninja Riot and Merilyn Flame, father/daughter crime duo Argus and Millis Steel, and the young Prince Raleigh of Azoth Kingdom who is manipulated by the cruel Prime Minister Alva. Gens V and VI, back to back, was really a good time for villains in the anime.
4. Gen VIII (Journeys)
Tumblr media
The TRio may have had the least screentime in this series and ran out of fresh material by the end, but for the most part they were solid as efficient but comical criminals. We also got Matori Matrix, as well as an alternate reality version of the TRio who were still under their serious Gen V characterizations. Team Galactic was far more efficient and interesting under Saturn than it was under Cyrus, the Macro Cosmos corporation headed by Chairman Rose made a solid arc villain, Ash’s Gengar had a delightfully villainous start, and Dr. Zed from the movie released in this series’ timeframe is one of the most horrifying and loathsome villains in any Pokemon media. Points off for that weaksauce, no-name Pokemon Hunter guy, though.
5. Gen VII (Sun and Moon)
Tumblr media
While the TRio ended up being far more like good guys than bad guys by the final year of this series, they had a great villainous run beforehand, with the creepy and hate-filled Mimikyu being a standout Pokemon for them. And Matori Matrix, under direct orders from Giovanni, were great human antagonists to close out the Poipole arc. The rest or more hit-and-miss, with Team Skull being great but not appearing nearly as often as they should have, Viren appearing too much and not really amounting to anything beyond broad comedy, Faba becoming more well known as a mainstay hero than as the arc villain he started out as, and Nihilego, Guzzlord and Necrozma being frightening, monstrous adversaries but not truly evil.
6. Gen II (Gold and Silver)
Tumblr media
The longer this series went on, the goofier and more harmless the TRio became, which was the start of their already dubious villain cred becoming a long-running joke. The worst part about this is that we get a lot of cool new Team Rocket members, plus Butch and Cassidy again, but seldom anything impactful is done with them, and they feel severely undercooked as a result. This is especially true in the case of Professor Sebastian and the silver-uniformed Team Rocket agents under his command. It feels like a story arc was begging to be told with these guys, yet it never is. Honestly, discounting the aforementioned Mewtwo arc sequel OVA that got packaged as three episodes of this series, the villainy in Johto peaked early with the triad of Molly Hale, Entei, and the Unown, none of whom are strictly even “villains” at all!
7. Gen IV (Diamond and Pearl)
Tumblr media
Team Rocket sucks in this series, and what’s worse is most of the other villains suck as well, including Team Galactic whose membership and motivations are so flat and uninteresting compared to their game counterpart and whose arc ends on a huge anti-climax. The best villains here are the loathsome Pokemon Hunter J and Grings Kodai (although some ironic enjoyment can be had with Zero and the evil Togepi), but Hunter J gets wasted by only appearing five times in a four-year series and dying in a situation unrelated to the main heroes, and Kodai ends up taking his monstrosity way too far to the point of discomfort.
8. Gen III (Ruby and Sapphire)
Tumblr media
Similar to Gen IV, Team Rocket sucks and so does everyone else. Teams Aqua and Magma are the most boring villainous team the anime has ever had; with the series’ movies being book-ended by associates of theirs who are honestly slightly better than them. And then who else, um....Rico the poacher? Colonel Hansen? That “Crimson Lightning” brat? Ugh, I guess that the Mirage Master or Mr. Mirage or whatever is the best villain we had this whole series.

Binge-Watching: Pokemon, Episodes 18-20
In which letting the Pokemon be characters makes all the difference, a Gastly steals my heart, and Misty is starting to grow on me at last.
The Secret Lives of Pets
Pokemon as a show is at its best when it’s centered on Pokemon. I know that seems self-evident; it’s an arm of a franchise dedicated to selling you on the fuzzy little critters, of course it would lavish the most attention and care on them. And I don’t mean this to imply the human characters are bad; you’ve all heard me gush enough about Team Rocket to know the Twolegs are acquitting themselves just fine. But there’s a stark difference between a show that’s “about” something in a general sense and a show that really digs into that “something’s” perspective. And as I continue through this show, I’m realizing that my favorite moments and episodes aren’t just about the Pokemon themselves; they’re when the Pokemon are used as actual characters instead of just cute playing pieces. Pokemon is at its best when it’s centered on exploring the psychology of Pokemon, what drives each individual one to do the things they do, their motivations, their hang-ups, their silly and not-so-silly trials and tribulations. After all, the reason we fall in love with these creatures is because we want to imagine living among them, and what better way to enhance that illusion than to explore what life might be like for the Pokemon living in this world, not just the humans? What better way to make them come alive and feel all the more tangible.
My point is, Ash and company are all well and good, but when the Pokemon themselves are the ones driving the action, it gives this show a unique identity all its own. Episode 18 stages an entire Godzilla-level disaster around an oversized Tentacruel with countless people in danger and a villain so cartoonishly evil her name is literally “Nastina,” but the most emotionally involving moment is ten seconds of Pikachu trying to reason with that Tentacruel in a language we can’t understand, communicating the emotions and frustrations of their debate solely through voice and body language. You don’t know the precise words they’re using, but you feel every ounce of the intent they’re conveying, and it makes these 2D elemental animals leap off the screen and wrap you up in their conflict, even for just those ten seconds. That kind of moment just wouldn’t be as special of it were two random people talking in recognizable English (or Japanese); the ability to empathize with these Pokemon despite their non-human nature is what makes their very understandable drama so potent. Ditto the entirety of episode 20 centering around Ash trying to get his Butterfree laid; I can think of a million scenarios with human characters where this would be utterly cringe-worthy, but watching Ash and his friends be so gung-ho about cheering their fluttery pal on, even being genuinely despondent when he’s shot down, makes it an incredibly charming experience. I was honestly touched when Ash had to let him go at the end of the episode (at least until the theme song started up in one of the worst-timed OP drops I think I’ve ever heard, because man, that song is not designed for tearful goodbyes). This was the first Pokemon he ever caught, and now it’s setting out on its own life, leaving them both richer for having known each other. That’s how powerful this show’s ability to connect to Pokemon as characters can be, and the more exploits that connection, the more it’s able to mine shockingly endearing material out of its component building blocks.
Not Too Ghastly
Of course, being able to empathize with Pokemon as characters in their own right doesn’t exclusively have to be used for dramatic concepts. After all, there are plenty of human characters who simply exist to have a good time and sweep you up in their charm; it stands to reason that Pokemon characters should be able to accomplish the same. And nowhere is that maxim proven better than the talking Gastly the gang encounters in episode 19. First off, I appreciate how Meowth isn’t the only talking Pokemon we’ve encountered; it stands to reason that if it’s possible at all for Pokemon to learn how to speak human, there’d at least be a few who knew how. But what I appreciate more is just what a good-natured bastard this Gastly is. He’s like a mixture of a boggart from Harry Potter and a mischevious imp with the voice of Vincent Price, delighting in pulling shenanigans on whatever foolish mortals cross his path. And yet, he’s doing it for a good reason; he’s taken it upon himself to keep a local legend alive for the sake of the spirit it’s based on, because he’s a ghost Pokemon and can see ghosts. That’s honestly fucking brilliant, even before the additional stinger that he’s earning cash off this project; of course self-aware Pokemon would interact with the world around them and use the tools at their disposal to influence it just like people would. This Gastly is a self-motivated go-getter who’s found a niche for himself in making the world a better place, using his unique abilities/natural talents as a Ghost-type to his advantage, and he’s worked hard to turn it into a mutually beneficial scenario that’s only consequence is some mild tomfoolery and spooks. He’s a fully fleshed-out character with understandable, sympathetic motivations, a ton of personality, and just a lot of damn fun to be around, and he’s a floating blob head of poison gas. Because in the world of Pokemon, even floating blob heads of poison gas get to be participants in this great experiment called Society. And I think that’s pretty damn neat.
Misty-Eyed
Still, let it not be said that the human characters aren’t pulling their weight either, and thankfully, it looks like I’m finally coming around to the last real hold-out for me: Misty. Misty’s the most outwardly abrasive and rude of the main cast, and coupled with her awkward vocal performance I often found myself not enjoying the moments when she took the spotlight. But as time goes on and she’s started to mellow out a bit, I’m coming to appreciate her more and more. She can be incredibly empathetic when the situation demands, ending the Tentacruel’s rampage with a few kind words. Much like Ash, when the going gets tough and she has no choice but to rise to the challenge, she gets to show off what she’s really capable of and earn her keep as a member of this team. She’s also one hell of a sassmeister, and whenever she favors snark over screaming, she’s able to wring some genuine laughs out of me. Stealing Ash’s “I caught a Pokemon!” pose just because she wanted to try it? Exquisite. Ribbing Brock about his failures in love (”I could write a book about the secrets of love and heartache!” “I guess that book would be your autobiography!”)? Iconic. Plus, she cleans up nice in a Yukata, and I’ll be damned if my shipper senses aren’t starting to tingle with her and Ash. Yeah, I know they go their separate ways when all is said and done, but let me dream here, god dammit. Point is, Misty’s making a much better case for herself as of late, and I hope she can keep it up.
Best of Team Rocket
-James is so committed to the rose motif he even has arrows with rose-modeled shafts.
-”Oh, it’s a tenta-cruel world.” “No time for drama, let’s get out of here!”
-”We’re at the end of our rope!”
-”I can smell money!” “I can smell corn dogs.” Meowth is such a mood sometimes.
”Team Rocket is really slipping.” Boooooo, cheap shot.
-”I’m James from Team Rocket! Wheee!” “*sigh* He’s back.”
-”Always waiting around for her man, like she’s some faithful pet. There are other fish in the sea!” Jessie Said Women’s Rights 1997
-”I think I’m doing a bang-up job!” “Let’s drum up some fun!”
-”Let’s do some networking!”
-”Those Butterfree are free no more.”
-”Isn’t it nice to have one of our nefarious schemes go right for once?” Aaaand you jinxed it.
-Pretty much every time they screw with the motto is golden. Jessie trying to do it solo since James is absent? Super. James joining in from out of sight so they try to find each other through saying the motto? Wonderful. Ash and his friends stealing the motto and using it back at them when they burst in on their scheme? Fucking hell, that had me in stitches. “Prepare for trouble!” “And make it triple!”
Odds and Ends
-Wow, that Horsea’s ability to draw complex pictures from a 90 degree angle with nothing but their pressure-powered waterspout is certainly convenient.
-”Doesn’t that old woman make you sick?” “Well, she’s not really my type, but-” NOT THE TIME ASH
-WHY DOES SHE HAVE A TANK
-”You shouldn’t drop in on me like this.” “I thought that’s what cousins are for.” I have... many questions.
-”Wow, what a knockout!” Let’s be real, Brock, you brought that stampede on yourself.
-”I’m the police, and I know exactly what you’re doing!” Jenny’s a real peach sometimes.
-”What do I look like, a vampire or something?” psdfksjdfks
-”Don’t butt into Pokemon love affairs!” See, if you said this phrase to me before, I’d assume it came from a steamy AO3 fanfic, not the actual goddamn show.
-”Love is about attacking first!” ...beg pardon, what now?
-I am living for Pikachu’s shit-eating grin right before he shocks Team Rocket out of their copter. No mercy. Make them remember your name.
Another good set of episodes. See you next time!

A 80′s Gushing Rant
Sorry I just spammed everyone with 80s cartoons XD (Well.. sorry, not sorry?) As a child born in the 80s, I have a special attachment to these cartoons. I mean doesn’t everyone? Nostalgia sells for a reason after all. We all at least have one fond memory of one cartoon or TV show or book that touched us. I was born a only child so often I only could play with myself. I was shy and much different than my other classmates. I was awkward a lot and often did my own thing. But one thing I loved was my parents giving me VHS’ to play which I would watch over and over until the tapes warped. I had many favorites over the years. And the 80s and early 90s were a peek time for several different companies to open their doors and unleash a barrage of toys, videos and books at young kids. I of course loved the popular shows. Shows like TMNT, Tiny Toons, Care Bears, My Little Pony, etc. I had a special spot in my heart for them all. But there were a few that were widely unknown. Most of these were popular but only really had one animated episode created. I kinda just wanted to gush about them a bit. Because these were underrated and I felt needed more recognition. A few of these did have a few episodes out on VHS but most only had one or two episodes. Some you may recognize, some not. Granted I didn’t watch everything that aired in the late 80s and early 90s. But these are some I just remembered.
Rose Petal Place
Tumblr media
This one had only one episode, several dolls and apparently a board game XD. Rose Petal Place was about a group of flowers. They were given life when a little girl cried over them, wishing to stay with her flower garden forever. But the family was forced to move and she had to leave her poor garden behind. The magic behind those tears transformed the flowers into real magical beings whose sole duty it was to protect the garden per the young girls wishes. Rose’s voice is the only thing that can keep the flowers blooming in the garden. Her singing brings life back and her spunky and upbeat personality kept me intrigued as a child. I loved girl heroes fighting bad guys as a child. It inspired me and showed me I could be as strong as her. Rose never backed down even when her voice was stolen from her by Nastina the classic spider villain in the series. She still tried to sing even without her voice. One of the very first lines we hear from Rose Petal perfectly defines what kind of character she is. Nastina: Rose Petal. You think you can restore the rose garden with your singing? Rose Petal: You know I can. (hands on hips) She was pretty classy too for a cartoon character. I loved her voice and singing was very on point. The episode itself was rather cliche and dated by todays standards. But the voice acting I felt was mostly on point. It did struggle a bit, but it kept it entertaining even as I watched it a few months ago. Sadly it didn’t really define the characters all that well. But I think given the chance it could have been a nice series. Maybe even with more colorful villains. It was very similar to Strawberry Shortcake and Rainbow Brite. I think also with the limited setting and semi unbelievable background story was probably a few of the reasons it didn’t do so well. However, the character designs were pretty cute and I loved the creative concept. “Friends, would you like to be friends? Would you like to share the day with me? We can be anything we want to be!” -Rose Petal  Pound Puppies (1980s)
Tumblr media
Okay this one is a bit more popular than the others on this list. But honestly, I forgot about it until recently. The series itself is nice, but the one thing I remembered most about it was the movie.
I think the best part of it was the music. While some songs were meh, Songs like “All In your Mind” and “At the Pound” were pretty good and I found myself singing along. Also it was pretty dark for a kids movie. If you really think about it, the villain was creepy and him turning those puppies into those vicious dogs reminded me a bit of dog fighting and how people turned dogs into killing machines. Plus the background design on these were pretty impressive as well. At least for me anyways. This is really all subjective anyways. But I liked the concept. Who wouldn’t love singing Dogs and cats going on adventures? XD But I feel like a lot of that vanished in the TV series. I got to say I don’t remember the TV series that well. And while it was popular, I think if you think of the 80s cartoons, this one takes a while to come up. It’s not forgotten totally but its not one of the first ones you remember. I certainly didn’t. I remembered the movie more than the TV show. But I also think it was a important show/movie. Because it was the show to bring more awareness about Pounds and shelters. Adopting kitties and dogs from shelters seems common now. But it wasn’t so back then. And a lot of animals were treated very badly at these places. I feel like this had more promise. And I’ll always remember Cooler and his gang from back then. The voice acting was meh most of the time. But some of the characters were pretty interesting and I loved the movie. Also, can I say I love the whole 50s/60′s theme they got going on?! Poodle skirts! YES!
Lady Lovely Locks
Tumblr media
Okay for this one, I only remember two episodes in particular off the top of my head. The Dragon Tree, which I loved because of the creative way dragons were born in this world. (Born from flowers the dragon tree bore) and the cute little baby dragons that emerged from them. Plus you got to see Lady Lovely Locks in black of all colors. The second episode being the first one. We get to see first hand at how Lady Lovely Locks can make her kingdom beautiful. Its literally in her hair. Magical girl hair. She was also rocking colored hair before it was popular. The voice acting can be cringe worthy and there’s not much music in this series, which is probably why it never got SUPER popular. It was semi known enough. Again, not one of the first ones I would think of. But I loved the character designs. I think in the 80s there were a lot of creative people wanting to create new and prettier dolls that stood out in one way or another to sell the toys to girls. But the world itself was very creative too and I appreciated that. So yeah the writing and stories kind of fell flat, especially by today’s standards.
But it was a series that doesn’t get nearly enough credit. It was one of the first American magical girls we had really. Lady Lovely Locks was a lady true to every word and not afraid to get her hands dirty to stop Ravenwaves. Also those Pixie Tails were so cute! Peppermint Rose
Tumblr media
“Listen... to the legend... of Peppermint Rose...” Can I just say how much love I have to this lesser known cartoon girl? Okay, I admit, this girl at the beginning of her one episode debut was a bit of a brat. Hey they even admit it in the cartoon! Rose is the typical spoiled teen. She has a bit of a attitude problem and is more the hesitant hero than anything. But she has personality!
The writing on this episode is some of the better writing I feel on this list. Not to mention the music in this animated episode was pretty, flowery and I fell in love with many of the lyrics. Here’s the title song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEy536JeVEc “ Sunshine, Rainbows A breeze that gently blows A garden filled with magic The home of Peppermint Rose Daydreams, Laughter A sweet and Fragrant Glow As Four enchanted Maidens Help their gardens grow. There’s lemon Drop Lily So pretty and frilly Miss Vanilla Daisy Kind of Cute And kind of crazy And Dreaming ‘neath a sky of blue Merry Mint Violet dreams here too Someone Special And so the story goes A rose whose a rose Who’s much more than a rose And we call her Peppermint Rose Listen to the Legend Of Peppermint Rose..” Yeah no I had that stuck in my head for weeks.. couldn’t get it out. Despite Rose’s sour personality, she manages to cross a dangerous river, out wit the Bubba Beetle and magically sing the evil Queen turning her good as well as her henchmen because.. y’know...magic! XDDD The ending did seem rushed and the bad guys were very typical bad guys of the time. But I loved that Rose had a lot of negative traits. It goes to show people can change and her transformation into Peppermint Rose only proved that she could be stronger, braver and kinder. I admit the story does not age well. But I loved the music and character designs of them all. The story was also very cute. This was a decent cartoon for the time honestly and I was sad that there was only one episode of this. It had potential to be more. Again, another one like Rainbow Brite. “What’s that Smell?” “Begonia!”
Now I didn’t put Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, Jem and the Holograms or any of the other more popular 80s cartoons here because while I did love them to death.. this list is for lesser known cartoons that others may not be familiar with. Granted the 80s and 90s were quite the decades themselves with a ton of cartoons. Both good and ehhh. But these always stuck out to me as a kid. Yes, I was a very girly girl. Still am in a few aspects. But each of these had something I appreciated and carried with me. And all had really cool designs for characters. I just wanted to show how much I appreciated them even as a adult. Even if they are dated and slightly cringe worthy today. I just appreciated the magic they brought with them, the music and the characters. I would love to see great remakes of any one of these. (The new pound puppies is kind of meh to me honestly) But I’d also love a great revival of Rainbow Brite and Jem and the Holograms too. Sorry this got so long. Whew... I think I will wrap this up. If I think of any more I may post something separate. Now remember, keep singing to bring life to those around you, never lose your bone of scone, let down your hair and let it shine and remember this beyond all else: A rose, whose a rose, who’s much more than a rose... And we call her.. Peppermint Rose.

Razão do banimento: Tendências Sexuais Explícitas
Razão do banimento: Menção a Ataques Terroristas
Razão do banimento: Menção a ataques terroristas
Razão: menção a ataques terroristas
No final, Ash e May fazem as pazes e o grupo continua sua jornada.
