Why is it that whenever someone talks about media literacy they only talk about things like rape, incest, pedophilia, and murder but never misogyny, racism, fatphobia, or ableism
Like it’s always about “problematic ships” and “evil characters” but never about how the treatment of woc in media influences how woc are treated in society and vice versa. How female characters are almost always the ones being singled out as “annoying” compared to male characters. Or how, yeah, there might be an in-story reason to why this lazy, depressed character is fat but societal views on fat people being lazy, depressed, unhygienic, etc., most definitely influenced the writer’s choice to make that lazy character fat.
I find that a lot of the “media literacy” arguments that pertain to subjects of sexual abuse and violence don’t really apply to other subjects in a way that isn’t wildly or even somewhat bigoted. Ofc there’s not gonna be a catch-all argument for how every theme should be treated in media but the arguments should at least be somewhat consistent.
I rarely ever see anyone talk about media literacy in a way that doesn’t boil down to “ok but liking evil/bad/taboo characters/themes/stories don’t make you a bad person and authors can write things they don’t agree about.” This statement isn’t wrong and i agree with it but it shouldn’t be your only knowledge on what media literacy is.
Sometimes, a story that has a rape scene in it depicts rape poorly. Whether its because rape was written in a fetishistic light or because the victims weren’t treated with the respect that they deserve, you need to be able to know how and why that scene is (cant think of a better word rn but I’ll probably change it later cause i don’t really like using this word) problematic. The fact that the story depicts rape isn’t the problem, it’s how they chose to depict it. And yes, how this story depicts rape can absolutely affect how a person views rape victims irl.
Sometimes, an author includes racist views into their work. Sure, depiction isn’t endorsement but when an author writes primarily about white characters, and has the first character of color in their book be executed as that character’s introduction, don’t be surprised when that author turns out to be a racist.
Yes, fiction isn’t one-to-one with reality but they both influence each other in a way that cannot be escaped. You will never find a piece of media that isn’t influenced by reality and you will never find a person whose views havent been influenced by a piece of media.
(Also, there is a tendency that i see in a lot of fandom “media literacy” people. And that is the tendency to use leftist, anti-racist phrases and terminology to refer to fandom discourse. “Kill the cop inside your head” refers to killing that part of your brain that has been drilled by society to view black, brown, and poor people as threats. It does not refer to people who don’t like your 20k incest fanfiction and are kinda mean about it. Stop fucking fandomizing anti-racist rhetoric. You just look fucking racist)
Sorry if this is kinda incoherent, I’m mostly just rambling.

I listened to that rich men from richmond song and at the start I was very confused why some people were angry at it and then the welfare stuff started and yikes.
Imagine making an anti government song that explicitly attacks millionaires and then derailing into hating poor people in the middle of it.

Something that really annoys me in the DN fandom is Misa being the final test for heterosexuality™. Like I have read gay readings of DN but there are people that take seriously Light not liking Misa as THE sign of him not liking girls at all

Psycho-Pass: Providence: NOT A REVIEW
When I went to watch PPP, I was sure that I was going to do a massive breakdown and more on here, like I had seen so many fans do - it almost felt like I'd be letting down the fandom if I didn't tbh...
But I didn't end up doing one. For various energy and ADHD-related reasons, but also because the film left me feeling so very satisfied that I honestly felt like I had nothing to say. Nothing needed to be said.
So here is a bit more of me saying nothing:
The film truly was a representation of what a cast and crew of people who have held a story with them for over a decade can do even with the most straightforward plotline. I honestly forgot that I was watching animated characters on screen - the way their voices worked - especially Kougami, Akane, Saiga, Shion and Gino (because of course Gino) was so REAL.
I love the fact that in a sci-fi cyberpunk dystopia set in 2115 onward, there is really no attention to detail in the sci-fi part of things. That's always been the beauty of the storytelling in Psycho-Pass. The computers, vehicles, the non-Dominator weaponry, the medical stuff, gender and patriarchy, even the architecture - all of it is UNfuturistic af. And that's beautiful! I know it probably has to do with budgets and timelines, but I think the simplicity of the world also draws attention to the priorities of Japanese society in the story.
Also, I've read a few takes about the whole KouAka thing. The idea that when they met in SEANu their chemistry was off the charts and then they went back to being awkward in PPP. But I think that was the point. Because of the way Japan is structured under Sybil, there is no scope for straying from your path or playing beyond the role you have been assigned. So in the wilderness, they could push boundaries. I think the same happened when Gino and Kou met outside Japan. But under Sybil, you are consistently under watch and so you toe the line. Again, I think this is a brilliant storytelling detail.
Ginoza Nobuchika. My beloved. He had so many beautiful moments in the story. Even though he didn't contribute much to the plot per se. But for that very reason, he seemed like a whole person in this film, someone who wasn't being driven by lofty ideals or unreasonable motivations. Just a dude, chilling, kicking ass, looking gorgeous, detaching his prosthetic to escape an explosion, saving lives. How wonderful it is for him to have reached here. Gives me so much hope for the future. For me.
And this. Of course.
Tumblr media
So I just want to congratulate the entire team behind this film for giving us a great chapter in the epic tale of Psycho-Pass.

So I jumped late into this tweet and apparently someone created an AI cover of a song using Benjamin's and Roger's voice??
Yeah, needless to say Roger wasn't exactly thrilled to hear that his voice was being used without his authorization and honestly I don't blame him for being mad.
There was another issue with voice actor Erica Lindbeck in which she faced a similar situation and she was none too pleased either. Things got ugly to the point that she closed her Twitter account because people were harassing her.... for defending her own work.
Idk what these people are expecting, you take someone's assets (in this case, their voice), you use it to make new content without their authorization, and they think they're going to get a standing ovation? Even if it's just "for the lulz"? 🤦🤦‍♀️🙄 It is one thing to take preexisting material and make content from it, for example, all the sexy "you're alright girl" edits I see on Tiktok, because that particular line is something that Roger already did himself. But if people were taking AI to make brand new sexy Arthur/Roger recordings, without him knowing or authorizing them... Yeah, I can't picture Roger (or any other artist, really) being all too thrilled about it. Even if it's "for the lulz" 😒

i knew arthur was welsh but why does sean call him 'english' if he's not english?
oooff tumblr ate my first ask so i had to type this all over again 🥲 but here's my take on the matter:
long story short, as you can already tell, sean is very irish, and like a typical irish dude, he has a (very justified) hate boner for the english
sean definitely knows arthur is of welsh ancestry bc he cares a lot about celtic national identities and such. iirc he constantly talks about their historical ties with england; he attributes these identities to fully culturally americanized ppl, like colm o’driscoll for example, simply due to their names; he tries to get molly onboard with this “friendship through kinship” idea just bc they're both irish. someone who cares so much about celtic identities like sean would easily tell that the name arthur morgan is a very welsh name. even if welsh and irish aren't from the same branch of celtic ethnicity, sean surely feels a sense of camaraderie for the welsh on the ground that they're both groups of people who were oppressed by the english and therefore must have been curious enough to familiarize himself with their history and culture
so to go back to your question: he constantly calls arthur “english” simply bc he thinks it's a funny joke? we know the gang members love to rib on each other, and sean just calls him that bc he thinks that would trigger him (in the “haha wales is england” way) bc he thought english colonization would offend arthur the same way it offends him
the funny thing is this implication is actually lost on arthur bc while he's aware of his welsh background, he is culturally an americanized boah who likely doesn't have enough historical context regarding the relationship between his people and the english to be offended. or he could have known but couldn't care less, bc he doesn't share sean's strong mindset of celtic self-determination. it says a lot when the most reaction arthur has displayed to sean's teasing is confusion, like “why are you calling me english, my family weren't even english” (paraphrased from arthur himself).
or i guess i can just sum this up with one sentence: sean calls arthur english precisely bc he knows he isn't lol

Also on this track, now i'm thinking about how castiel LET himself be possessed by lucifer, BRINGING LUCIFER INTO THE WORLD, after Sam sacrificed himseld and was tortured for hundreds(?) of years in the cage. Not to mention the r*pe jokes that lucifer/hallucifer kept making at sam, it's horrible that castiel let him into the world and I think that dean and sam should NOT have forgiven him for it.

Normally I'm very pro-NASA...
But since finding out that they were part of the nuclear reactor lab, subsequent coverup of the nuclear meltdown at said lab, and giant amount of radiation poisoning that killed my grandfather (and the relatives of several other friends, and gave a ton of kids incredibly rare cancers) (x, x, x, x, x, x)
I think I probably need to throw out my NASA tank top. Which is a shame because I like it, but also it's a Texture Problem and more importantly I don't think I'm gonna ever be able to wear it again without being super bitter.
Anyway this blog is anti-nuclear in all forms so jot that down. We can stop climate change and achieve a greener future without poisoning any more communities or killing any more children.
And my grandfather and Los Angeles aside, the vast, vast, vast majority of the terrible dangers of radiation and nuclear everything fall hard on Indigenous communities. 90% of nuclear waste is buried on or within 10 miles of Native land, despite Native land/reservations making up approximately 1% of land in the United States. i think a part of why sanji and zoro always fight is that sanji sees a lot of what he’s supposed to be in zoro. he’s supposed to be strong, ambitions to be the strongest, masculine, seemingly cold and emotionless, confident, self-assured and to be an unwavering shield for the people they both love. And sanji will never be almost all of those things but that’s okay bc he’s not supposed to be and he just hasn’t realized that yet but i really hope oda writes him fully accepting himself
