“Bambino. . .” The baby kicks, a firm shot right against Peppino’s cheek. You both wince, but Peppino just laughs, rubbing your swollen stomach. “Haha! Strong like Papa!”

You sigh as another few kicks come. “Too strong.” The aches in your ribs proves it, not to mention how sore your tummy is starting to become. “You’re suppose to calm him down, Peppino, not rile him up.”

“Spiacente.” Peppino hums, looking none too sorry, really. He rubs your stomach again, nuzzling into it. “Il mio bambino forte.”

You flick his head as the baby kicks again. Still, it’s nice seeing Peppino laugh and smile without the lingering anxiety that always seems to follow him around. He’s been stressed about having a child with you, but in these small moments late at night, his joy and love truly shine through.

It almost makes you forget your annoyance and exhaustion. Almost.

“I wanna sleep.” You whine, pinching Peppino’s ear. He huffs at you, but knows when to quit.

His voice lowers, a warm rumbling of Italian that he murmurs to the baby. The little being inside of you calms at the sound of his father’s voice, and in turn, you begin to doze off as well. Peppino has always been good at talking you to sleep.

It’s nice to fall asleep with your growing family so close. You can’t wait until the baby is here and you can hold everyone, finally complete.
