Hi! I absolutely love your work and your art style (and I think Hilda is one of the best animated shows ever made!!) I want to dip my toe into drawing, mainly because I want to be able to do little sketchy character drawings for my D&D campaign lol. Is there any particular book or course you might recommend for getting started? Thank you!
thank you so much ! <3
I would say if you want to start drawing , do whatever makes it accessible and fun for you to start. I cant go hardcore into learning, i need some indulgence to keep it fun.
Its hard for me to recommend anything off the top of my head. there is SO MUCH GOOD STUFF OUT THERE NOW ADAYS. also you may look at a book or a course and the way its explained wont make sense to you, but someone else could put it a different way and it could click better! Everyone has a different workflow and different methods, so what i'd recommend is just poke around in some youtube videos and just watch a few beginner ones, see what methods you vibe with. But at the end of the day do what you feel like is most fun and dont sweat the details
DONT BE AFRAID TO REFRENCE THINGS! When I was in school for animation, one of the first things you did to learn to draw on model was draw overtop of the model sheet and break down the proportions. (how many 'heads' tall is it , how many 'eyes' wide is the face). If you see a style you like, learn from it !
Tumblr media
Drawing overtop of a character and breaking it down is a great exercise if there is a style you want to mimic. Understanding the proportions helps because then when you draw, if it looks -off- you can test out your own . Who knows, maybe you accidentally made the body too long or short! People are afraid to trace or draw over, but its a great exercise as long as you dont take credit, especially if you're not just doing it for something to look pretty but you want to *understand* how it was done. This helps a lot in building your own style ! my style is a mish mash of everything i've loved and worked on over the years, and it changes over time. So if you see something and you're like 'ooo thats COOL how did they do it' , save it , break it down , maybe you'll learn a few new things !
Tumblr media
also I recommend to start with simple shapes ! I put some screen captures from rough sketches that Scott Lewis did, who is a senior animator on hilda. Even as an experienced animator he knows how important the fundamentals are (which is why hes good at his job haha). I think if you want to do fun sketchy things for DND , keeping it simple is the way to go :) you'd be surprised how much expression you can get out of shapes ! I hope this helps you get started on drawing all the endless DND shenanigans that I'm sure live in your head :D .

Is there any particular artist, show, game, or movie that inspired ur art style? It’s so pretty ^^
I have so many!!! I definitely can't name every single one but heres a few that have been extremely influential to me!! This took me 2 hours to write i am SO sorry lmao

Puyo Puyo (Specifially Fever, Quest, and Tetris)
CUTESY BRIGHT BRIGHT COLORS!!!!!! Thats everything I love!!!!!! I'm pretty sure I talked about this when I first got into puyo puyo but I for SURE instantly decided that yep Im steering my style in this direction sorryyyyyy!!! I just think its so fun and silly and cute and rahhh it makes me so happy.
Especially for the work I do most often, which is character portraits without backgrounds, I will often look at puyo puyo posing just to get ideas!! (I've drawn Arle's dumbfounded pose 100000000 times becus I love it so much). The puyo puyo anatomy has very noodly arms and legs but with big ass shoes and accessories which is probably my favorite design thing in the world....
I seriously recommend just looking through the Puyo Puyo Nexus wiki for pose ideas (if you want something cute/silly of course) because every single one is just perfect. I am trying to get out of some dumb art habits of my own right now, but hopefully in the future you'll be able to see more goofy poses with sillier effects :3

Muse Dash Again I want you to look at the COLORS. Its so bright and this time you can really tell where I took my shading style from. I dont want my shadows to be dark I want them to be PINK or PURPLE. thank you. For my own art, I really try to make it so the darkest "black" is actually a deep purple or blue, and as I keep making art that dark color keeps getting just a bit lighter haha...
This is also the reason I color my lineart the way I do. I just really want to add as many colors as possible into the image. And if the image looks a bit more pink after that then thats just an extra perk!!
I also need to bring up the animation because they're just so bouncy and alive!!! This is like an instant stunlock for me, I have to look at them, theyre so BOUNCYYY!!!!!! I don't do much animation but every other week I get the sudden urge to try tweening again just to eventually get to the point I can make something similar to these for my own ocs lol

Great Pretender This show has some of the most gorgeous art ive ever seen. All the backgrounds are so bright and colorful. I dont usually draw art with backgrounds anymore sadly, but when I used to I really tried to study these for them. And I hope in the future I can make more art and show how far I've come.
Though I;ve changed to a more chibi style in recent times (thanks puyo puyo), this was still one of the first times I had ever watched a show and said "Oh my god I love this artstyle I need to get better at art" and Its always in my mind for that reason.
Ive definitely stolen lots of elements from the style. Though they've gotten more subtle over the years. I dont really know how to describe it any further but I hope you understand what I mean by looking at these screenshots,,,

Hiii its the anon that asked for cellbit last time Back Again To Request More Cellbit!!
Maybe cellbit hyping up reader who just started streaming? :D (also i love your writing So Much omg)
hiii omg I missed you!! I love this prompt 🙏🙏 ; thank you for the compliment!! I appreciate it a lot 🫶🫶
CELLBIT ; stream starting soon
summary ; he hypes you up :)
warnings ; language, cringe, pet names (darling)
genre ; fluff
word count ; 737
masterlist
Tumblr media
"Are you gonna stream tonight, darling?" Cellbit stands in the doorway, looking over at you while you sit at your desk, designing a new stream starting soon page.
You shrug, "Maybe. I wanna get this done first, animation was never my strong suit" You reply, clicking your tongue as you flip to the next frame to color.
He nods, stepping closer to get a better look, standing beside you. "Looks great so far"
You shrug again and mumble, "It's super choppy, I don't really like it"
He crouches down a bit, reaching your eye level, "I think it's amazing, and I love the color scheme. It doesn't matter if it's not over a thousand frames per second, Y/n/n. You should do whatever makes you happy and satisfied though, you dont have to stream because I suggested you might like it"
"I do want to, I just don't know what I'm doing and I don't know what people think of me" You say, placing your headphones down on the desk next to your keyboard so you can properly listen to him.
He tilts his head a bit, his facial muscles relaxing to talk to you a little more softly. "Well, I think, no, I know-" He says, correcting himself, "-that people think think you're a wonderful, kind, and most importantly, gorgeous person"
You're unable to hide the smile tugging at your lips as you reply to him. "Shut up, Cell"
"What? Why? Cause you're scared of the truth?" He teases, running a hand through his hair again.
"Nuh-uh"
"Yeah-huh!" He chuckles, "You're the most beautiful, caring, compassionate, truthful, and loyal person I've ever met. I, ever since I met you, have been convinced that some supernatural force sent you to me because you're the light of my life."
"Be quiet," You chuckle, hiding your face in your hands.
"No! You need to know how much your fans and I all love you." He smiles with a light chuckle, standing in between your legs as he wraps his arms around you, embracing you in a hug.
You accept the gesture, sitting forward in your chair a bit for him to not fall on top of you because of the uneven weight ratio as he was pushing back on your chair a bit before. He rubs your back as you hold on to him tightly, taking some deep breaths to calm yourself down a bit.
He pulls away once he hears you exhale for the last time and gives you a light smile. "Everyone adores you, at least I do, and you're gonna be an epic streamer just like yours truly." He giggles. "I do think you should put us in the Seedot art style in the corner, though"
"Oh my God, I should've thought of that! I knew it looked to blank! Thank you!"
He smiles, seeing you get to work on drawing the two of you for your new stream starting soon page. You animated a little bit of choppy movement and some hearts above you guys, floating so high that they popped at the top of the screen.
Once you finished, which he grabbed a nearby chair to watch you work on, he gave you a round of applause and a kiss on the cheek. He was trying to hype you up, also because you were planning to go live right after and play Jackbox with him, Quackity, Roier, Philza, and Charlie Slimecicle. You hadn't talked to them much, but you knew enough that they were all cool people, and you'd be happy enough to stream with them and get to know them and their humor some more.
"Told you it looks great." He cheesily smiles next to you, resting a hand on your shoulder as you sit back. "Do you need me to do a silly dance to make you a little more happy?"
You roll your eyes, staying silent as you cross your arms and pout. He stands up, turns your LED lights to the changing/multicolor setting, changes the tab to your Spotify, and plays a song to dance and sing along too. He spins your chair around and yells out compliments to you frequently before you start laughing with him, joining in on his antics.
"I'm hyping you up so much right now!" Cellbit smiles, spinning you around the room.
You laugh, "You sound like a Millennial using Gen-Z humor, stop!"

helloooo darling, just wanted to tell you your art is absolutely adorable and makes me so incredibly happy 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
genuinely, on all my bad days, just looking at your art makes me feel better!! (人*´∀`)。*゚+
my question was,, what do you maybe think influenced your art to be what it is now? if any? any shows or comics you watched as a kid, or books you read? :DD
oh this is such a fun ask 🎶 i grew up reading a lot of fairytales, mythology, and just stories with fantastical elements or magic. so obviously, i was obsessed with the percy jackson books 😭 also i think most people can relate to this, but i grew up watching a bunch of disney, ghibli and harry potter too! this is probably why i like to draw things with a feel of magic (?) in it.
i dont watch anime or read manga that much anymore, but they definitely played a huge role in how my art looks like now. back then i had a really anime art style but recently im trying to incorporate more 'western' style elements.
honestly i was having a bad relationship with my art for the past two years, but i'm starting to have fun again! i want to experiment more, create new stories and build different worlds. look forward to some original pieces from time to time ✨️
(and thank you! i'm so happy my art makes you happy!!)

ok i'll bite– why should i read requiem of the rose king?
YES IT WORKED, COME HERE FRIEND :D
ok fair warning: im like 10 chapters away from being done. the ending could be terrible and ruin everything but i doubt it. i know it in my heart, its gonna be great
from what i know from you, i know you like to suffer (same) so this manga is totally for you, but let me give you a list
-the main character is intersex and although the world (fuck you 1400s) is queerphobic, the topic is still handled with respect and depth. it asks interesting questions about gender and identity
-the mc is so emo you dont even know. but not in a cringy way i would say
-toxic gays >:D
-joan of arc is there. as a ghost. pretty cool imo
-the vibes are gothic because of the time period but also the main character himself: he wear black, there are crows, dark forests, etc
-the art is soooooooooo pretty i love it. its so delicate and aggressive when it has to. it has the classic shojo style but when it shines it does really shine
-theres a shit ton of blood and gore (think mcr revenge era kind of gore)
-cool religious imagery and themes/parallels
-it really feels like a journey. not only a political one (cuz historical fiction) but also a personal one. the main character may not get to the right conclusion and it will make you say "nooooooooooooooooo stopppp" but thats the whole point. hes a flawed little man with flawed and sad little thoughts. its really interesting to watch him get what he really wants
-the story really knows how to drag the reader to feel what the characters are feeling. like in the latest chapters i have read i was able to feel so much desperation and panic from the little guys that it made me really sad and i laid on the floor for a bit
-theres always drama and i love it
-theyre not afraid of being really weird sometimes and i love it
-the mc as a child looks like this
Tumblr media
-i dont know what else to say without spoilers but i will say that a lot of moments are replaying in my brain like a record
now onto the warnings
-transphobia and dysphoria
-r*pe
-kinda incest
-SA
-implied r*pe
-you may be tempted to watch the anime instead of the manga but the anime tried to put 78 chapters in 24 episodes. the adaptation was sadly doomed from the start

I had some thoughts today about why I still gravitate to children's media as an adult. Why i still have opinions on them. And why they still maintain at least a small plot of real estate in my heart to this day. I realized that many of the cartoons I consider to be classics from my childhood (avatar the last Airbender, Danny phantom, teen titans, and later in life, star wars clone wars as a few noteworthy mentions) are a coincidental combination of the things I seek most when searching for media.
Much of a medias first impression can be tied to aesthetics. The appearance/tone/setting of a show can determine whether someone stops watching halfway through the first episode, or remembers the content for life. So what was it about those shows that stuck with me?
The least helpful description I can give of my aesthetic preferences is "escapism". I want to engage with a universe that is so compelling that it distracts me from the reality of day to day life. It can be enormous fantasy, fascinating sci fi, or just a place more fun than reality.
In addition to that, I like character designs and scenery that are colorful. There are so many drab live action shows that you can take a still image, and it would be completely indistinguishable from a thousand other shows. Good cartoons don't have that problem, they are loud to the point of iconic. It makes sense, designs from children's media are meant to sell toys. But it turns out that designs that are marketable are also often memorable. If only shows like succession were pitched with the intention to sell a line of action figures with different vibrantly colored suits /s
Looks alone don't make a series memorable. I assume I'm not alone in knowing I've watched a few GORGEOUS anime or other properties because I liked the art style, and yet when I reflect on them, I remember few if any details of the actual content. What the shows I listed above do is two-fold. Both retaining my goldfish level attention span with their visuals and entertaining me with the stories they tell.
As I said previously, I engage with media to forget my troubles. And as a result, I don't enjoy watching properties that take themselves too seriously. I need time to breathe, relax, and sometimes laugh when watching content. And cartoons have humor baked into their DNA. A bunch of silly lil guys doing animated things very naturally becomes amusing. So funny (or at the very least light-hearted), and colorful. That can describe plenty of cartoons, but the final trait is what makes my favorite truly exceptional to me.
Nothing invests me in a media like in depth character examination. I want to see those little shits emotions on full display as they face impossible odds. I want to see them scream and cry and struggle, in a way the toxic masculinity that has infested Hollywood won't allow a lot of popular properties to do. I want to take a break from marvel one liners and block buster explosions and silent dark brooding that fills every movie and every show to LOUDLY FEEL SOMETHING!
I often see people imply that continuing to hold affection for cartoons as an adult is immature. And you know what? If that's what I have to be to enjoy what I enjoy, then that's alright. There's worse things I can be then immature.
I wanna laugh and cry and forget for a little while. That's all. I mentioned clone wars above specifically because I didn't watch that show until i was in my 20's, but during its best episodes it made me feel the same way i did watching the cartoons from my youth. There's also the spiderverse movies, which are in a league of their own as far as exceptional animated content, I was captivated watching them. So I dont think nostalgia is a factor for me, i think i just... like good cartoons. And I'm done allowing other people to decide for me that I shouldn't.

Are there some artists on YouTube or tutorials you would recommend ?
I will put some links below that helped me💛
Tumblr media
This artist can help people at any level of art. For people just starting out or who have had some self-taught practice, or maybe they're picking up the pencil again after a few years of not drawing.
All-time favorite YouTuber right here!
His voice is soothing, but he also has videos where he doesn't talk at all if you aren't a fan of that type. The videos are pleasing to just watch if you dont feel like following along. He breaks anatomy down by shapes, which helped me understand it all a lot more.
youtube
If you are looking to draw humans, this is your guy. I recommend starting with understanding the basics of anatomy before you jump into any stylized art like manga or anime stuff.
youtube
He has tutorials for traditional pencil sketching and digital art. I think it's best for beginners to start out traditionally and work their way into digital art.
It's cheaper than a tablet, for one, and it's way easier to learn the basics on a sketchbook! Chommang teaches better in his traditional sketching videos.
Tumblr media
Also, I'd recommend focusing on the body more than anything as a beginner. Drawing a face is hard, especially if you have a specific style in mind, and you might get stuck trying to get the face to look right.
Tumblr media
Drawing and mastering body parts will build your technique and confidence in working up to small details in the face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The coloring book specifically was super helpful to understand muscles and why things may look weird or normal in some drawings.
A personal favorite:
youtube
I was having a rough time a majority last year and feeling down on myself. Eventually I lost the energy to do any hobby.
This video really helped me flip my perspective. He pretty much says don't be too hard on yourself and compare your drawings to other people. He spent years of his life doing that and hated drawing because of it.
Tumblr media
Also... it may sound annoying or obvious... but practice every day. I fell off for a while and stopped my daily practice, but I'm starting up again. It really makes all the difference in the world.
Tumblr media
Good luck anon! I hope you have a good weekend. With enough patience we can learn to draw Madara in any situation.

do you have any favourite design work, just in general? your mecha work has always struck me (as someone obsessed with that kind of thing), but the dreamlike feeling of the semi-abstracted backgrounds is incredible
im gonna make this a bit long and also gonna introduce the 'good asks' tag for asks i spend a long time writing an answer for so its not lost to time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a huge inspo for my sense of design, wildly enough, was space patrol lulucos backgrounds. i cant find a better shot in google images of the way it renders space, but the screentone clouds really stuck with me and influenced how i use it heavily. i was really obsessed w the collage like bgs in particular and v singular color grading
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
gunbuster and diebuster are hugely influential, in different ways. im obsessed with the palettes in diebuster.. everything about the lilac stems from the exelion in gunbuster, the zephyrantes took its root entirely from the idea of a warship so large it has a train network and painted skies inside of it etc... the oppressive mech cockpits are heavily drawn from gunbusters. the nerv stuff in eva is also a big source of inspo.
Tumblr media
a huge impact on how i approached backgrounds for coquette was tsukihimes, the singular blue color is why i only use a v limited palette for coquettes backgrounds... where i got started with planning coquettes bgs was the thought of using the same filtered approach but to simple 3d instead of photos. i ended up good at 3d so it never was simple though
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hidamari sketch is maybe my fav work on the planet, and its a huge part of why im obsessed with screentone... my attention to detail with the living spaces of characters comes from it and the detail it gives to every characters room in the apartments, and how they each use the same floorplan differently. its visually stunning top to bottom in a way that only comes through when you watch it imo.. the use of photos etc has stuck with me forever, it rly is a show using 20000 art styles at once and rly gave me a lot of thought on treating direction as collage of styles you like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
heartcatch precure is one of my favs ever, especially visually... i love how far it leans into like being very digital looking and uses color so strongly to convey a mood.. i remember being immediately struck by how it uses this sickly green color for the world/sky during the fights etc to build unease. i love how high contrast it is, i definitely drew a lot from its stark orange and black backgrounds for doing the duchy stuff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a lot of movies definitely stick with me visually, but its easier for me to think in terms of 2d/3d... the mishima movie (lmao) has directly influenced my bg art heavily, especially when i use these kind of overhead diorama esque shots
youtube
in terms of how i do 3d and shade it etc... a lot of is heavily inspired by the use of 3d in the code geass ovas (lmao), noone watched this ever so none of its documented but this AMV has quite a lot of it. the harsh shading in the scene around 00:20 is what influenced me using that style in the ch3 opening animation... the snappy fast violent animation is kind of my ideal for how i wanna animate mechs
i think a lot of how i design things is through trial and error, but theres a lot consciously floating thru my head around what kind of look id like to achieve... i dont actually plan much, ever. i animate with no storyboards, write without an outline, only do one sketch before settling on any designs, and mess around w colors for a scene until its done

Hi!! I'm curious as to the main inspirations for your artstyle is? It has great cartoony vibes I really like it (smth about its vibes really reminds me of a cartoon called detentionaire in particular? I'm not sure what tho asides from the general aesthetic)
Hi hi! My default artstyle is pretty much an amalgamation of what I liked (I like both animes and cartoons) but I can't deny it totally leans heavily on cartoony sides hhh. I never heard of Detentionaire and decided to check it out and I think I'll watch it one day since I dont really have the time to do so rn _(:3」∠)_
I referred a lot to early 00s cartoons like PPG and Clone High since both are my favourite shows (although I didnt bother to finish S2 of Clone High because.... yeah) so both are a big influence for my art style in general.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of the time, I based them off PPG Movie like ugh I have so many words to describe how much I adore this movie and I have dedicated a ridiculous amount of time to this series but anyway I really love how they manage to translate the PPG character designs into digital animation (since the original was made traditionally) so beautifully like everyone is so much angular and since they have so many budgets for the movie, they added gradients and color balance each scenes. This movie means so much to me art wise because I just never thought that just by adding gradients to such a simple looking art makes it so prettier so I just started doing gradients after I watched this movie lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My other art inspiration is definitely Jeluto! She drew so many anime characters in this art style and I just love how each character she drew just fits their personality and appearance 💗💗💗
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But if you want a more specific term for this kind of artstyle, the name for this art style that a lot of cartoon from this era you see in the late 90s-early 00s (My life as a Teenage Robot, Fairly Odd Parents, Dexter's Lab, El-Tigre, etc) is widely known as UPA Artstyle! There's a really interesting blog post explaining this art style in general that people should read :3

aagh i dont think i'll ever have one biggest inspo for poetry n art i just have a lot of lads which i like specific things about + those likes are still always ongoing and changing lol (which btw ty for askin bout poetry cause i LOVE it n i never get asked abt poetry hehe)
I have a big ol google doc where i have lines of fav poetry i write down when i come across them (usually when im just scrollin the internets) and atm I've been noticing that a lot of lines i keep enjoying are all by Mary Oliver even tho i've yet to read her collection of poetry!!! so that's on my to-do list C: other poets who's names keep poppin up in that google doc are ocean vuong, richard siken, chen chen and uhh flatsound? they do more music but they've done some spoken word stuff and their songs just feel close enough to the realm of poetry to me u know

Holly warb and @/vchienart both got some lovely lovely illustrations/paintings with soft beautiful colours... @/emilienunez has some really pretty and elegant yet v cute ceramics!! and @/soonthemoon some really like cute warm n cozy ones... Oof there's so many digital artists i love ;-; and i keep finding new cool lads aghh @catnippackets has such a good grasp on like form n shape if that makes sense?? like drawin people in these rlly fluid poses in like silky lineart aaa i found @milkdudz 's art recently and i LOVE their art style and their cats are just. perfect balance of spiky and soft n very very Cat which is so good @everydaylouie u gotta know louie right ?? how can someone make such lovely 2d and 3d art and music and also know how to code n make lil games. that is too much power for one soul to possess nifty-senpai's art n animations and designs ofc!! are incredible!! and i REALLY love their concepts for what the wc clan territories look like (this moonpool are you kidding me???? gorgeous) @thunderc1an's lineless art style my beloved...... yall clammorin about my lineless art style u GOTTA check out theirs so good (also the everchanging never the same designs for wc characters is so good so freeing so interesting to look at!!) hi so i kinda happened to fall in love with your art.....and i wanted to ask a few things!!! (if its ok!)
uhmm first of all how long did it take you to get that art style and perfection it etc etc?
also do you have any tips for anatomy? not big complex full body anatomy, just like...idrk honestly, some tips related to anatomy or hands or just the body that helped/help you?
and uh yeah if you just have any general tips on whatever to improve my art/art style i'll take litterally anything 😭
again, i love your art, i love what you make! keep doing what you do, you're awesome!!!! sending love and support <3
ah!! tysm <333!! thats so cool to hear!!!!!!!!!/gen
ive been drawing forever honestly. i've always been really into it. im fifteen so thatd be like 12 years. and obviously i wasnt always studying it super seriously or anything. idk. my art isnt perfect by any means. i just dont really post the shitty pieces lmao. i struggle with sm stuff and will be continuing to study probably till the day i cant hold a pencil anymore lol. (i draw too much, my hand hurts ;w;) its a never ending process and honestly thats why i love it sm.
as for anatomy i think the main thing to keep in mind is that anatomy and just drawing people in general is really hard. i heard this in this old video about how pixar used to do 3d animation is that the reason they didnt do animations of humans for so long is because we ourselves have very specefic ideas of what a human looks like. i think this also applies to art. which is a really long way of saying, trust the process.
i use photos personally! you can find a lot on pinterest but there are a couple things id keep in mind when it comes to photos people edit their bodies sometimes so their proportions so be careful, it will defeat the purpose of the study if the bodies inaccurate.
idk here are some that might be good for starting off. dancers and people like that are super helpful. remember to not to focus too much on the lines but more copying down the shapes,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
for hands i would just look at your own hands and try to capture them quickly. i say quickly mainly bc i shake a lot lmao, maybe youre different. or you could just be smart and take a picture of your hand but im very lazy and dont like getting up to grab my phone.
for art style id just save stuff that inspire you. could be animations, comics, album covers, cool photos, just stuff that gives you like vibes. literally ANYTHING.
like, omg this is making me think of a cool idea rn!! save it! even if you cant execute it now you can always execute it in the future when your skills are more developed :)
style studies are also helpful! try copying art you like, seeing different peoples techniques however some things to keep in mind with this are
you might accidently copy down an artists mistakes or bad habits without realizing it so try to have some variety in your artists
dont post the art. some people are okay with tracing but the vast majority of artists dont like it and it makes them uncomfortable. so id just like keep it in your sketchbook or whatever :) better safe than sorry.
anyway ah this is so longgggg! sry im so bad at being concise lol. theres probably a lot of youtube videos that could help you with this stuff if you want more explanation. the channel ive been watching a lot in since this summer is sketches of shay. she makes a variety of stuff but her art studies and resources are also very helpful :)

art by me fox therian/foxkin!! i fully 100% believe i was a fox in a past life, and that i should have been one still, that my soul is of a foxes. i've also had dreams of my past life, or even lives, as well!
Tumblr media
art by cherivinca shiny umbreon kin!! when it comes to my fictional kins, they're a bit more.. abstract. my therian self is 100%, and kin is just as close as well, but probably not a past life? overall, shiny umbreon to me is more fox than anything, and with a fox with a strong affinity for the night and space, it just makes sense! not to mention the yearning i get with art & the phantom feelings, of course x3 similar, because i'm a shiny umbreon, i'm just as much a shiny eevee
Tumblr media
art by me dragonkin!! ever since i found myself as a fox therian, i've had phantom shifts with wings & horns & big ole tails. for awwhilllee i thought i was spyro kin but it didnt "fit" right till way later when i revisited my kin side and came to terms with my dragon side!! still trying to get more in touch with it as well :3
SECONDARY KINTYPES definition; these kins are me, but are not constantly at the for front of my mind. this is also where more of my fictionkin will come in
Tumblr media
art by pkmn card artist sui shiny luxio line kin!! this just... makes sense! if you know me, you get why, but my main pokesona is a shiny luxio. it'd be weird if they weren't a kin type feeling for me
Tumblr media
art from a whisker away movie house catkin!! meow :3
Tumblr media
art from homestuck nepeta leijon kin!! :33< meow :33
Tumblr media
art from homestuck dave strider kin!! why do you think my name is dave? but like actually this guy is bordering on main kintype, with nepeta too, buuuuutttt... the other 3 are just more constant, especially because i'm not very actively consuming any homestuck media anymore LMAO. but my humor, typing style, and mannerism, all stem from this fucking guy, so! he's pretty important!!
Tumblr media
art from bnha manga deku kin sorry! sorry. im cringe! technically this kin came to me when i was like ew kin is cringe im not otherkin i would never be. but now weve gone full circle. i am otherkin, but it feels cringe to be kin with him because he is bnha. how unfortunate
Tumblr media
art from haikyuu manga kuroo kin hes ME. hes ME!!!!!!!! for awhile, the LONGEST TIME, i thought i was kenma, but i thought about it, really thought about it, and im kuroo. my boyfriend is kenma. we are kenkuro for reals (he isnt otherkin)
Tumblr media
art from the naruto manga sai kin watching naruto during the very formative years of my life and not understand why i related so much to the guy who had to read a book to learn how to make friends (we are both autistic)
Tumblr media
art from gravity falls show dipper pines kin yeah. Yeah. i dont have much to say just. yeah.
WIP theres way more i just.. dont remember right now. first time im writing this stuff down <:3
COMFORT/OTHERHEARTED CHARACTERS/CREATURES definition; characters/creatures/animals i feel very very attached to, and seeing works/art/pictures of them brings me a great source of comfort
Tumblr media
picture from hubble space telescope space for a very long while, i thought i was spacekin, and i've learned now it comes instead from the comfort a night sky can bring a fox/umbreon/dragon, and not because i was part of space. or well. i do yearn for home when i look at the night sky, so i still might have more to learn here
Tumblr media
art from the bnha manga katsuki bakugou (kacchan) you will never. NEVER GUESS. what my main bnha ship is.
Tumblr media
art from the haikyuu manga kenma kenma is just like my boyfriend and i am kuroo this is just. facts. i love kenma sm. so much comfort.
WIP
QUESTIONING KINS definition; what it says on the tin, things i am questioning if i'm kin with
Tumblr media
art from the first pkmn movie shiny mew kin? if im this one then damn it makes a lot of phantom shift feelings make sense
Tumblr media
art from pkmn card artist tika matsuno espeon kin? headgem phantom limb too strong sometimes. plus the funny feelings i get when i have espeon pfps
Tumblr media
art from loz series, icon made by sensoryeen link kin? from what series? who knows! but he's 100% trans. this.. just makes sense. whoops! we'll see
Tumblr media
art from the naruto manga kakashi kin? big maybe on this. would need to revisit the source material. alternatively: obito instead. dont know yet. leaning towards kakashi
Tumblr media
art from httyd movies toothless kin? it is either this or hiccup kin. i would say if i was toothless i would have more of these phantom feelings? either way. very very very deep connection to httyd as a series & universe. one month i watched the 1st and 2nd movie like 5 times over because it was the only way to feel comfort

During my re-watches of certain things, I want to take note of a lot more that I didn't take note of the first time around. But... I'm finding it hard. And idk if I'm finding it hard bc of the specific animes I've chosen, or bc I forget all the tropes lmao
I'm gonna get so annoyed if after rewatching 10 more animes I only THEN remember the tropes and be even more annoyed that I didn't catch them in the 10 animes I just watched
But, I'm hoping its actually to do with the animes.
Like, SnK is unique. It has some stereotypical anime themes, but for the most part, and I said this before, its almost like an anime that isn't an anime. I suppose the most anime thing about the show is more to do with inner monologues. I'm so used to inner monologues that I forgot that that was an anime thing. Like you might see an inner monologue in a real life comedy, like a scene from Friends or something, where someone is talking to Joey but he's zoning out and thinking about food, and the audience gets to hear his thoughts.
SnK has a lot of moments where you hear the characters thoughts, and then time freezes at certain points so that if the inner monologue happens to be quite long, its not as if they're just sitting there thinking while a hundred things are happening all around them. Or even moments where they talk to themselves about the action they're going to take.
I legit didn't notice these as being unusual until I looked over to my dad who was utterly confused. And then I realised, all the marvel shows, the FBI shows, the star wars shows, the whatever else shows, they don't do this. He's 100% not used to it. So I can imagine it'll throw you off a bit.
But anyway, SnK is unique, like I said.
But also so is Osomatsu. On a completely different scale.
Both of these shows are realistic and far-fetched at the same time. It's crazy. One of them tries to not be an anime, and the other one wants you to know its an anime. But like, they're aware they're in an anime. Like they're actors in an anime.
So these two as my first two re-watches aren't the best to try and analyse.
Now we have 91 Days. I remember watching this weekly and it being one of my faves to get to every week. The mafia concept isn't insanely new in anime, but its not that common. So that in itself makes the show stand out a little. The art style is unique in the sense that the studio doesn't really have many other projects under their belt, so it doesn't really look like any other anime.
But, a few things.
I know I didn't like the ending. So I'm going into this mostly forgetting what happened in the anime (minus very small insanely memorable scenes, like Kaiba being a freak), but fully remembering the ending and not liking it. So... I don't know if my weekly enjoyment of this anime, but my dislike at the ending, made me rate this anime a 7 or an 8.
Because its Mafia and so its more serious, I'm not spotting any stereotypical anime tropes. I'm defo watching a stereotypical revenge story tho, that you'd see outside of anime.
Kaiba's eccentric ass may be anime specific? If there's real life characters like him, I'm not remembering any off the top of my head.
I dont know if I liked this anime bc it had a good story and characters, or bc I was so sick of being tortured by animes that hurt women in various ways, and had asshole main characters beloved by all. That anything ANYTHING different was to me a good anime.
So yeah, the first anime I get to (if you erase the uniqueness that is SnK and Oso), and I'm sitting here blanking on what I'm supposed to be looking out for, but, its probably bc its a mafia anime. If I'd chosen a highschool anime, or a magical anime, or a mecha anime, or just a straight up comedy anime, anything overdone in the field of anime, then maybe I'd notice. But mafia of all things lmao I'm likely not gonna spot any.
I'm just hoping that, when I start to recognise tropes again, that if there did happen to be one or a few that appeared in 91 Days, that I'll remember to note it down

this is a post of me shitting on intsys for what happened to engage, i honestly feel bad for mika pikazo, basically thrown under the bus by intsys from the start, was given very little instruction on what to do and what the mood of the game (engage) will be and it seems like there wasn't much of an editing down phase either. i feel bad she was just handed the paltry descriptions of 40 characters (being instructed to draw "older woman" and then the character turning out to be 30 sticks out in my mind) with not much direction.
im not a big fan of her style these days, more of a 2018 mika pikazo appreciator, but i question why they hired the artist who most commonly draws album covers, magazine covers and alt designs for already existing characters like hatsune miku. i do think the onus falls on intsys for hiring someone who seemingly doesn't fit the job, but i think if they actually gave real direction the designs would not be in the state they are now.
ofc being the nerd i am i object to her art being pejoratively labeled as "vtuber art" because i never understood that label and also frankly i think it's insulting to reduce the style of an artist who has been around for a long time to just one thing. i keep seeing that post explaining it and its like buddy... sorry you keep seeing personalityless twitch indies who overcompensate by overpaying for ugly overdesigned models but saying "vtuber style" is surmountable to "too anime". what does it mean?! i read that post over and over and i feel like the influence of "vtuber" (incredibly vague term that means nothing and changes between whoever uses it because its convenient) and "genshin" (im not a genshin fan and i dont care for the designs in it but is it really that influential as OP claims?) is very overstated... if anything the design in anime and games these days is increasingly influenced by subculture, shit like jiraikei which i actually dislike because THAT'S repetitive and generic. how many times have you seen a design in recent years that's structurally just this to the point of being boring to tears
Tumblr media
im seriously not saying this as a "vtuber fan", given the vtubers i watch most often are "elf guy in a suit", "guy in labcoat", "girl in very normal school uniform" but i find that kind of criticism an oxymoron. is it because i don't really interact with twitch stuff? like, whatever. i know being an oldhead who usually just sticks to what ive liked for years impacts my point of view. my point is that mika pikazo is a talented artist, the designs she put out for engage were a massive miss but 1) was she the person for the job 2) did intsys give her adequate instructions and support and the answer to both is no. i think it's fine to dislike the designs, i don't like a lot of them either now that i've seen all of them. but at the same time a lot of people are just extra rude about it (seen in replies to redesigns) and usually i wouldn't find any issue but knowing the context that intsys screwed pikaZ over really really stings. i remember when engage was revealed people were harrassing her for weeks which sucks, she's been nothing but a really positive presence online.
i was gonna say "anyway hire someone who fits" but then i remembered how kusakihara is one of the most overbearing control freak art directors in any game company i've ever seen, hiring chinatsu kurahana for fe3h and then not letting her draw any of the in-game sprites despite being an artist who is familiar with the workflow of visual novels and the like... and yes i can tell it's kusakihara imitating her style. i know the way he renders, especially the way he makes tits look disgustingly oiled up.
interestingly, kozaki was always thrown under the bus in a similar way to pikazo, making similar remarks about how fantasy designs aren't his forte and how he's not sure why they hired him (we now know it's because they wanted hidari for awakening but he had other obligations). kozaki even got the blame for some of the worse designs like camilla, even though that was a kusakihara design. i'll lay my cards on the table: i think kozaki's designs, given he is not a fantasy artist, i feel comfortable in saying that they're bad. he's a comic-like artist that does well with modern day stuff. you let him onto fire emblem and he makes the insane armor designs in fea and fates. and of course all my respect to him, but like pikazo he is not the right guy for the job.
anyway i hope you guys are ready for them to hire kishida mel next and for every girl to be an infantile school girl cause LOL. they really gotta stop hiring super specialized artists (like pikazo who does one off illustrations best, and kozaki who does western movie/comic book inspired realistic designs best). even when they hire "the right person", intsys and the art director and overall director kusakihara are overbearing and take over too much (as seen with kozaki and kurahana, according to the echoes artbook there were hints of him trying to influence hidari as well but hidari was not shaken + hidari was there on a favor so they probably couldn't pressure him more LOL)
but yeah i think people should be blaming intsys way more

✨ i dont know much about demon slayer, introduce me to it!
oh boy i can certainly try my best!! this will be somewhere between an Introduction and What I Like About It <33 so basically:
demon slayer is a manga/anime series set in taisho era japan (aka ~1910), revolving around a thousand year conflict between Demons, folklorish man-eating creatures turned from normal humans; and Demon Slayers, a secretive group of swordsmen sworn to protect humanity from this supernatural threat.
the story revolves around two siblings-- Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado, and their struggle stumbling into this conflict after Nezuko is turned into a demon.
on paper, it's a pretty typical shounen anime-- a very straightfoward "good-vs-evil" plot with a heavy focus on swordfighting. however, in my eyes, its charm comes less from its actual in-present-text plot, and more on the sheer amount of love put into so many little details in so many places. i'll be keeping this as entry-level spoiler-free as i can, but i'll elaborate on a few of my personal favorite bits! under the cut:
Art Direction
Narrative Details
Characters
> Art Direction.
ill disclaim that i dont watch a Lot of anime-- in fact, this is pretty much. the Only anime i watch. but the art style + animation of this series is absolutely fucking Stunning. every single frame of it looks like it could be its own illustration, and this traditional brush-like line weight sticks around for the entirety of the show. not only this, but a lot of the sillier, more doodle-esque panels in the manga get translated into the anime, and it is insanely charming.
its ability to handle atmosphere and backgrounds is just as strong, and it only gets better the longer the show goes on. also, circling back to the line weight, there's a lot of effects like Fire and Rushing Water, and not only does that too carry the same lining style, but its constantly in motion. its genuinely such a treat to watch.
and god, the voice acting. (DISCLAIMER ive listened to both the english and japanese versions and Heavily Heavily prefer the japanese voice acting. i wont elaborate too much because this will get Long but you gotta trust me: youre gonna wanna pick the subbed version.) the voice actors do such a genuinely stunning job at both conveying their roles, and also conveying tone and emotion. demon slayer is a tragedy and jesus fucking christ do they fucking commit to it. if a character is crying, they are going to Cry. if they are screaming, they are going to fucking scream. it's very intense at times, but god is it so fucking good.
tanjiro's voice directing is just. [waves hands around] SO GOOD. he's described by another character to have "a sound so kind it makes you want to cry," and. shit dude! theyre right! he's got such a soft and kind inotation to his voice, and yet he still has the range to do [waves hand again] All The Rest Of That. AND THERE'S ONE ANTAGONIST. in season 2, there's a demon that has three entirely different voice tones, and it is genuinely chilling to hear them switch between them just. on the drop of a hat. you have to trust me. you are just going to have to trust me, its SO good.
> Narrative Details.
this one's A Lot. theres something about the tone of the story itself, the way it Carries itself and its relationship to its setting, that is just. so delightful to take in. it's got this weird split between the realistic/historical and the fantastical/mythological.
demons are real, pseudo-unkillable, oftentimes physically montrous, and possess nigh magical powers ranging from typical elemental effects to Pots That Eat You. however, they're also simultaneously staunchly stemmed in the Physical and Tangible-- theyre treated as entirely different species with entirely different biology. their abilities stem from their Blood-- as does their seeming immortality, which is a hypercharged version of cellular regeneration, needing to be fueled by their altered diet.
slayers are nigh-superhumanly powerful swordfighters with ridiculous amounts of physical strength and stamina, using techniques bedazzled with imagery of flames, thunder, rushing water. however, the biggest part of the series is focus on the training of demon slayers-- focus on breathing and allowing your body to function at peak efficiency-- sometimes even pushing past its typical limits-- each form of swordfighting having an entirely different physical execution. those that reach the highest levels of skill are able to practically conjure the look and feel of the elements their techniques are named after. hell, the focus on their swords is shockingly detailed as well!
its a delicate balance that is genuinely so much fun to watch and analyze-- in fact, some of the characters' looks are even given folklore-esque explanations for things like hair and eye color. it's delightful!
> Characters.
in my honest opinion, this is probably my favorite part of the entire series. there's so many things i could elaborate on, and it's all presented with such shocking simplicity! it all feels very genuine! they all, honestly, feel like People!
the character design is, comparatively, very simple. even so, so many of the characters remain genuinely iconic and easy to recognize at a glance.
and then, their actual characters. the way they act. This is the bit i love the most. aside from background characters and the such, there isn't any character that feels entirely one-note. the protagonists are genuinely so lovingly written, and theyre so so easy to get attached to. tanjiro is genuinely one of my absolute favorite protagonist characters, not just because of the way he is written, but the way that you get to see him Think and Grow. he's defined by his kindness, but is staunch in his motivations.
as well, demon slayer is very good with character introductions. it has this funny thing that it does where it introduces a character in such a way that makes you go ". am i supposed to like this one??" presenting them in an almost one-note stereotypical fashion, sometimes even in an antagonistic fashion-- but episodes down the line when the stakes raise their head, you look back and suddenly realize: oh god. i care about this fucker. if anything happens to them im going to actually cry.
its such an interesting way of introducing characters, especially the way it completely reframes the way a character Acts at any given moment in a way that makes them painfully human. you really start to feel for them!
all in all, the charm in demon slayer lies in its worldbuilding, its characters, and especially: its Themes. god i could go on for hours about the links between characters in regards to the themes it chooses to present and delve into, but. this is already long enough. but i'll just say: it handles all of these things ridiculously well.
what does it mean to lose yourself? how do people interact with the concept of death and entropy, of loss? legacy, family-- how do these ties push you on, weigh you down? what will we do for the people we care about-- how far are we willing to go to protect the ones we love? what was given for us to make it this far? who will carry on our message when we are gone?
bonds between siblings, between friends, between those we choose to protect. what makes them real? what are we willing to fight for? to die for? loss is inherent to being alive, but so is joy. we're temporary, we're fragile, we're unstoppable-- we are all painfully human, and thats what makes our lives worth living, no matter how dark, no matter how "insignificant," we're worth it because we're together, we're worth it because, inherently, we are alive. and that is worth protecting.
