Also I gotta ask, how would the RWBY Halo story end up potentially jackknifing into multiversal crossover shenanigans?

Alrighty! So this AU can best be described as one of those cases where you spend all this time and effort coming up with characters, developing their backstories and lore, figuring out how they all meet and come together... and then realize you really have nothing for them to actually... DO.

To whit; this AU imagines Team RWBY as a team of SPARTAN-IIIs who fought in the tale-end of the Human-Covenant War and are last surviving remnant of the ill-fated 'Project ARTEMIS', basically 'What if Beacon was a SPARTAN-III training facility?' There's actually a whole crazy backstory I came up with for their story that involves more or less the Fall of Beacon if it was the Covenant instead of grimm and a lot more people died and also Team RWBY fights a one-team guerilla war against the Covenant for the better part of a year before escaping in one of their ships.

However, that wound up just being part of the background for Team RWBY in this AU, because this story would be starting up two years Post-War, with Team RWBY having become innovators in SPARTAN armor modification and brought on to help design and test the next generation of MJOLNIR suits.

And now we come to everything else, because I also decided to come up with a whole host of other characters for this AU. In this case an entire ship and crew that Team RWBY is just one part of that I put a LOT of thought into that can basically be summarized as 'A ragtag bunch of misfits MADE UP OF ragtag bunches of misfits' (which includes Team RWBY). Just the ship alone I thought up as this refitted frigate that was used as a test-bed for all sorts of experimental technologies but wound up so over-designed that nobody was sure what to do with it, so it go assigned to a crew that nobody was sure what to do with.

(also, the frigate is named the Molon Labe, mostly because I am utterly baffled as to why seemingly no Halo ship has been named that yet.)

I had a ship, I had a crew, and I had no idea what they'd actually be DOING. So because at the time I was really into crossover fics, I came up with the idea that after the ship got some upgrades from a friendly Forerunner Construct by the name of 1883 Pensive Delineation (literally Penny as a Forerunner AI), the ship suffers a freaky slipspace/FTL accident that sends her and her crew rocketing across the multiverse for numerous misadventures.

A few of the places/series I was thinking they'd end up:

Mass Effect - Where the crew has to first get their bearings and figure out they are in a whole other universe and also avoid getting dragged into any galactic conflicts because due to cross-universe tech-levels, they're kind of freakishly overpowered compared to the locals.

Fate/Zero - Where the crew gets embroiled in a lot of magic chicanery and also has to try REALLY hard not to get spotted by 1990s humanity. Also they accidentally take Artoria and Irisviel with them when they leave.

Zero no Tsukaima - More magic chicanery and also the crew isn't able to lie-low in orbit/under the ocean again, so now they just have to try REALLY hard not to get embroiled in pre-industrial political powerplays and backstabbing with a bunch of mages who REALLY don't know how to take 'No' for an answer.

(also at some point I was going to have Artoria start wearing a spare suit of MJOLNIR armor. So that would have been fun :D)

Honestly, if more people are interested in this idea, I'll probably just post some of the more interesting parts of the notes I've been jotting for it over the years XD

Just a random shower thought, but... is there a real-world equivalent for Aevium? I know that geographically speaking, it's neighbors with Kalos and by extension Galar, and it's also somewhat based on Europe as a whole... but is there a specific real-world location it is based on or can be equated to?

stumbled across some of the tim is bruces dad au posts and asks and was immediately hit with the thought of how awful it was when tim was kidnapped by zor-el as oz anf kept in that time prison for 6 months. or when he fucked off with yj on that multiversal roadtrip for like another 6ish months i believe. tims absence would be felt terribly by bruce. and anyone that has to interact with him during those times.

Oof. You're absolutely right for that, anon.

Alfred kind of helps, but he's only a temporary measure. Since Bruce thought Tim died during that whole time prison stuff, Bruce would have been miserable to be around. His parent/leash is "dead" so the man goes back to his emotional shitty ways.

There are some changes, though.

One, Tim ensured Bruce built up a better support network. This is part of his retirement plan, which was created partly due to Tim wanting to improve Bruce's health long term and as a backup plan in case anything happened to Tim.

Two, Tim has trained Bruce to feel his parental disappointment if he goes back to his post Jason's death ways. Bruce has a little Tim in his brain just staring at him and making facial expressions at every action the man commits. Even though Tim is dead, Bruce still wants his inner Tim!Dad to smile at him in approval.

So, yeah. Bruce is insufferable without Tim, but he's not as bad as he could be. When Tim comes back, he reviews all of the data and gives the man corresponding praise/lectures depending on what he finds. He's proud of Bruce for holding it together, but he'll make sure the man reaches out to his support group more next time. He can't keep pushing people away

Multiversal Roadtrip Dreamtale AU

lightttttAlright, so thanks to the wonderful @dreemurr-skelememer and their amazing fixation on Dreamtale and the asks they got, I whipped up practically a whole AU concept as a spur of the moment thing, and they convinced me to post it here, so... here we go!

Details below the cut

Basic foundation of the AU is that some kind of event happens with Dream and Nightmare back before the apple incident. Whether it was a fight, magic went wrong, or maybe even a couple apples fell from the tree and clocked them on the knoggins, they took enough of a hit to knock their true forms, their souls, free from their skeletal bodies.

Still conscious and radiating quite a bit of raw positivity/negativity, the pair try to re-enter their bodies, but there’s an issue. See, in their true forms, they don’t really have a way to perceive the world, so a slight misjudgement in where they are and... well, as Dream opens his eyes and sees that he’s wearing dark purple, and Nightmare sees that he’s wearing light blue and has a cloak on... well, it doesn’t take much to realize that they had swapped bodies.

This has... consequences. As a result of the change, the emotions radiated by their true forms near the tree, or even just pure random bad luck, the tree itself finds itself influenced by the swap, and as such, negativity and positivity across the multiverse end up warped, changed, inverted, and all-around scarmbled.

So, accompanied by a single multicolored apple that hold the consciousness of their mother, Nim, hte pair set out across the multiverse on a pseudo-roadtrip in an attempt to fix things and make things right.

Funny you should bring that up, Anon. I actually have a few AUs where Errorink decides to just adopt the Dreamtale Twins, though not necessarily in an FGOD-FGOC setting. I actually don't know if I have one in an FGOD-FGOC setting, I'll have to check. Sometimes in the AUs, Error and Ink haven't even officially adopted them or anything, they just start referring to them as their kids, much to everyone's confusion.

Random Story Concept/Idea Ask Game

Alright, so because I’d like an excuse to ramble about story/fic ideas I’ve probably spent way too much time brainstorming in my head, here’s an Ask Game I just came up with.

Rules: Post any number of fic story ideas/concepts that have been bouncing around your brain for anywhere between the last ten hours-to-ten years, but you’ve just never been able to write anything on them beyond a bunch of notes and WIPs. Post either a title, a brief blurb, an incomprehensible bit of rambling, or some combination of the above.

My Story Ideas/Concepts:

Fate Series-

Fate Foundation: Grand Order by way of the SCP Foundation with a smattering of Metal Gear Solid.

FGO: Spirit of Blades – In which I come up with a far too convoluted explanation for why Gudako looks like Shirou Emiya’s long lost younger sister.

Helluva Boss-

The Loonie/Via Roadtrip Show; featuring shenanigans, bounty hunting, dark sorcery, trauma and feels.

Highway Blossoms-

The Dungeons and Dragons AU where things are not nearly as different as you might think.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha-

Lyrical Ghosts: The cyberpunk-esque AU where less characters are dead but there’s way more trauma and war-crimes and I crib a LOT from Ghost in the Shell.

Nier Automata-

Nier-2B Route Extended; the hypothetical route where 2B gets to stay the main character, A2B is real and 9S gets to be the final boss.

Nier Alternative/Nineless; the AU where 9S does not exist, 6O gets to be a character and I have put WAY too much thought into lore and worldbuilding

RWBY-

The Halo AU Idea nobody asked for that ended up jackknifing into multiversal crossover shenanigans.

More 'Ozzie's multiverse diner AU' tidbits! (Really need to think of a better name tho)

. Prior to opening the diner, Oswald actually ended up experiencing some sort of excistential crisis about finding his purpose in life after realizing the studio mainly gave him work for merch products and the odd advertisement here and there. If he can't do what he's designed and made for, what else can he do?

.He talks it through with Ortensia, whom suggested he just take a break from it all and take some time for himself to figure things out.

.Not really being part of a larger friendgroup like Mickey, he doesn't have anyone aside from Mickey and Ortensia to actually confide in on this matter.

He doesn't want to bother his brother with this, he wouldn't understand his point of view completely anyway, so he ends up taking a roadtrip trough the country.

It isn't until he, by chance, he meets up with people and Toons who give him some clarity.

He can find and create his own purpose.

. The diner was actually his own idea. Mickey and Ortensia fully supporting him.

. Doesn't mean Mickey fully understands his reasoning, leading to some brotherly squabbles from time to time.

. Doesn't help Mickey was the one tasked by the studio to confince Oswald to bw content with what he was given, the moment they find out he went mia due to his sudden, unplanned, roadtrip.

. They still have a good brotherly bond despite that.

. I mentioned in the last post that Oswald has 13 kids in this AU. Epic Mickey named them all Junior followed by a number. But since there are a lot less of them now, they can all have individual names. But to keep it as kind of a callback to all the kiddos being named Junior, all their names will start with a J.

. Word on the street apperantly is that Ozzie's diner has pretty decent coffee. Prompting some 'cop, detective and PI characters to drop by first thing in the morning or at the end of the evening for a cup.

. Most Toons haven't heard about Oswald either or his relation to Mickey. So it's ussually a mystery to them who this random fry cook is the Mickey Mouse seems to have befriended.

. Ortensia bakes most of the pies and cakes they sell. She ussually also has a blast coming up with new milkshake combos.

.Oswald can, and will, throw hands with anyone who ends up bothering the staff or other guests.

. Because both of them are smolls, the floor behind the counter and in the kitchen are adjusted and raised so they can reach the counters without having to stand on stepstools all the time.

2022 in review, part 5: novel first reads

my top ten favorite first reads of this year! more or less! idk it’s harder for me to rank books than other kinds of media sometimes, i feel like. i did my best.

1. wolfsong by t.j. klune (2015)

i already wrote a very long review of this so i’m not gonna rehash it here, but yeah this is a gay werewolf book with a very unique/artistic writing style and i’m pretty sure the main character is literally otherkin. (they don’t use the word “otherkin” but his experiences line up so well it’s kind of scary.) obviously i’m a fan.

omfg i need to get back to this series i love tamora pierce’s writing style so much. i keep alternating between kicking myself that i didn’t read these as a kid & celebrating the fact that i get to read them all now. but, yeah, i need to get back to this series. and her stuff in general.

3. any way the wind blows by rainbow rowell (2021)

this is far & away the best book of the simon snow series. it’s just such a godsdamned satisfying ending.

i mean, okay, i do find it a little off-putting that i’m meant to believe that penny is heterosexual, but we can’t win ‘em all. but also we get to see her rules lawyer a fucking demon??? and be a stone cold badass in the process? so i can’t really complain about how that went.

the writing of simon & baz’s intimacy with each other was fucking sublime. it was so heartful & honest, i just ached for them.

i’m a little disappointed that this was such a definitive ending because i could’ve kept following these characters for like a dozen more books, but honestly it was such a perfect ending it’s kind of hard to argue with it.

4. birth of the firebringer by meredith ann pierce (1985)

yeah i can’t imagine what i found appealing about the unicorn book with narration from what feels like an awfully authentic animal headspace whose culture is SUPER pagan and where the main perils are 1) vore, 2) mind control, 3) literally a tornado. just truly drawing a blank here.

5. wayward son by rainbow rowell (2019)

i’m so glad the harry potter books never did an american roadtrip because holy shit it would have been insufferable. this, on the other hand, is brilliant.

everyone at ren fairs is apparently actually a witch or supernatural creature? vampires run las vegas? techbros are trying to contract vampirism for incredibly dumb reasons? yes, yes, yes. perfect.

6. star trek: discovery: dead endless by dave galanter (2019)

we gays are so powerful, you guys. i mean, the fucking butterfly effect of the awful season 1 of discovery unironically employing the bury your gays trope resulting in us ending up with this profic au where culber’s ghost finds his way onto a discovery commanded by a michael burnham who never mutineed and has family dinners with fleet captain georgiou & surrogate sibling saru, and he just immediately starts making out with au stamets who starts working on bending the laws of physics to the will of his multiverse gay love story.

sometimes profic is just fanfic with resources & a stamp of legitimacy, and when it is it’s glorious.

7. star trek: discovery: fear itself by james swallow (2018)

the discovery novels are shockingly good. like, this one is so action packed while also being such a great character study of saru. it honestly surpasses what the show was doing contemporaneously. i’d really like to see more comics or novels set on the shenzhou.

8. murder on the orient express by agatha christie (1934)

this was almost certainly hindered by the fact that i had seen so many adaptations of it by the time i read it that i felt like i had already read it, but i nevertheless enjoyed it quite a bit and am eager to read more mystery novels (and christie novels specifically.)

9. lunatic fringe by allison moon (2011)

patient worldbuilding, imperfect but well-meaning characters having mostly (mostly) good-faith conflicts over strategy, and L E S B I A N   W E R E W O L V E S. yeah, that’ll work.

10. blood and chocolate by annette curtis klause (1997)

this book’s picture is in the dictionary under “problematic fave,” but this really is delightful if you can get past all the ways in which it’s awful. and i can, clearly.
