Kinda a hot take but I feel like mtmte megatrons arc would have been so much better if he had stayed on cybertron, like if he had to stay and was around Optimus and starscream, people who arguably know him best, so he is always staring who he hurt directly in the face, bc to me while Rodimus is great for giving megatron a mostly impartial view, I think megatron redemption works best when he has to constantly confront his sins and magnus and rodimus feel to distant as characters to really be brutal with how much megatron has hurt people bc he doesn’t know them as well, tho megatrons arc in mtmte is really good I think this would have not made the rest of the story not so bogged down (sorry if this doesn’t make much sense)

You're making perfect sense to me, anon. And you're not the first person to tell me this. I do agree with you on some level, but the thing is that Mtmte Megatron's arc is Mtmte Megatron's arc. It cannot exist in any other story. I feel like this kind of what-if is runs into too much of an hypothetical for me to make any actual meaningful commentary. It's hard to explain but let me try.

I feel like saying what if Megtaron had stayed on Cybertron is not the same as saying something like "what if Drift had returned earlier" or "what if Pharma had stayed on the Lost Light" or even imagining ways in which his character could have been better integrated into Mtmte's narrative in that if Megatron had not gotten in the Lost Light, his character would effectively not exist.

I have told myself fanfiction where Megatron stays on Cybertron many times and there's lots of fun possibilities there., but there's a difference between a fannish idea and what it would have been in an official capacity. The key here is that the Megatron I'm incorporating into the exRID/OP narrative is still JRo's Megatron. He still has character traits and a backstory defined by that comic, even if I try to take as much of all IDW1 as I can in my interpretation of him.

Mtmte/LL, exRID/OP and Windblade/TAAO are all part of the same universe, yes, but they're all different stories, with different genres, tones, ideas and most importantly, different writers. I mean just look at what a different character Starscream is when written by Barber vs Scott. If Megatron stays on Cybertron then either Scott or Barber would have been his main writer and we just don't know what kind of character he would have been then.

Would they have tried to do a "good" Megatron? Well, the idea of Autobot Megatron was thrown at the brainstorming table for Dark Cybertron as a possibility and the JRo said that he wanted to do that. But the idea was there, maybe they would have picked it, maybe not.

I feel like, much like with Mtmte, Megatron just has too much gravity for Windblade/TAOO and the best way for him to be incorparated in it would have been sporadic appareances while he's in jail or something, probably to taunt Starscream, knowing Scott. This is double-edged for me, because I feel like the way the idea of Megatron was incorporated into Starscream's arc needed more buildup so this could have helped. At the same time I already feel like Starscream's character was too much reduced to being a reaction to Megatron's actions, which is no fun to me, and Megatron's inclusion in the narrative feels like it would highlight the aspects of Scott's writing I don't like as opposed to the ones I do. But again, I can't now. Maybe she would have tried to reform him as well, I have no idea how that would have looked like.

As for Barber, well, everything post DC was based around the fact that Optimus is just too big to not change the game completely, so the entire story became about that theme. It doesn't sound like including Megatron in that would be that. In fact, it's kind of a no-brainer, this is a story about the weight of Cybertronian history with is stuck in a cycle of violence riddle with war and colonization. The guy who did war an colonization better than everyone else should be there. It would be very satisfying to see Megatron, who rose up against the legacy of the Primes, be confronted with the fact that all he did was uphold their ideas of Cybertronian superiority. How does he handle the Decepticons? And then there's the mirroring where Megatron is trying to do better while Optimus is on the verge of losing it and everyone is worried he's gonna pull a Megatron. But again, who knows what kind of character Megatron would have been under Barber, maybe he would have played him as a villian until the end like he did before Dark Cybertron. He would have still been a thematic fit.

You know, I like exRID/OP a lot and I feel like Barber is more willing to take certain risks than JRo, so I think I would have liked the hypothetical version of his story that would have included Megatron but really, maybe he would have fumbled the bag, who knows how much the plot would have changed if it had included Megs, maybe he would have gotten a different idea, maybe it would have costed the Optimus and the Arcee I so adore. Also, a lot of people aren't that fond of Barber's writing so the general response to this non-existent story is another matter altogether.

Despite everything, I don't really begrudge Megatron leaving with the Lost Light in itself. Like yes, it removes him from the more direct consequences of his actions and is not fair that he gets to drop the Cons and go on a roadtrip of self-discovery. But Mtmte is a roadtrip story, there just isn't any way around this. Also, I don't care about what is fair because none of these stories are about fairness or people getting what they deserve. And finally, it makes sense in the way I read Megatron. One of his key traits for me is how his experiences led to him disregarding life and only finding worth in fighting, his arc is about peeling off layers of self delusion and it starts with giving him a place to chill so that he can see value in life again and be in a mental state to appreciate how badly he fucked up.

Problem is how much he bogs down the rest of the story as you said, and other minor things I can more easily ignore.

Side note, but you know that part in Combiner Wars where Windblade and Optimus are like "We cannot allow Starscream to have his way, but we can't just pull a coup?" I think it would have been really fun to have Megatron for that. No, Megatron you cannot beat the shit out of Starscream to solve the issue, you have to respect him as the president. Hilarous. I need to pay someone to do a short fic of this.

the arc from idealist to tyrant tends to be skipped over - something i wish MTMTE expanded on even more. what are the gruesome choices a leader like him has to decide in wartime? is conquering an organic planet to keep his own people alive morally justifiable? what are the slow, creeping decisions that ultimately warp his pro-democracy, anti-capitalist perspectives into something totalitarian and cruel?

in the comics, it might seem like a headfirst slide. but someone as painfully remorseful as megs in MTMTE/LL didn't descend into madness on a whim (like in aligned)

one character i love seeing them interact with

i've gotta say terminus

at first, terminus represented the good in megatron: his writings, his compassion for someone severely disabled + in a horrible circumstance

but later on....

terminus shows 1) how people look on their pasts/old friends with rose-tinted glasses and 2) the subtle ideals that influenced megatron during his formative years.

here, he's telling megatron to be accountable to no one but himself

drift, drift, and drift. maybe deadlock. they had a relationship heavily hinted-upon but never fully explored. it has fascinating implications (ex: the contrast between drift and tarn and their relationships to megatron and the decepticon cause)

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character

megatron frequently expresses his frustration with rodimus, but i think deep down he has massive respect for him because of nyon, and surviving him fuckin blasting him through the chest (i have my own headcanons/theories about rodimus' ptsd and how he's put up social walls similarly to drift but ANYWAYS!)

i always think about megs saying "you're so much bigger without it" to minimus about the magnus armor and i always wondered why he was so... affectionate? honest? and i came to the conclusion that part of it comes from him reflection on his original theories on functionism and respecting minimus for rising above his stature.... pun intended

Always something to be said for taking out-of-text ‘word of god’ commentary on what-was-to-be with bit of a pinch of salt, even if it is coming straight from his planning notes, but as you can see I’m being very Casual and Normal in my reading of the notebooks because unfortunately the works of one Jimbo R. still have my brain in a vice grip. I’m interested in piecing together a clearer picture on what factors played a part in shaping what we actually got in the final version of MTMTE/LL, for better and worse…anyway the red tabs are for all Drift mentions. director’s commentary on (re)experience?

i was hoping someone would ask about (Re)Experience :) been working on finishing the final chapter (nine! the just-a-bit-of-fun character study turned into nine chapters!) these last few weeks and so have it on my mind near constantly.

commentary for this one is for the flashback in chapter 3. whole section's a bit long to quote so here’s the opening to jog the memory

– Minimus had surprised exactly no one when he’d volunteered to be the one to take inventory of the supplies they’d need to get off the Necroworld and reclaim the Lost Light from the mutineers. Rewind had found him cataloguing how much energon they could transport, to calculate precisely how long it would last them under strict rationing.

There are some conversations that will never be easy to start, no matter what direction you come at them from. Rewind opted to begin with what was most important.

“Are you alright?”

Minimus didn't look up from the cubes. “Hm? Fine, though I would be better if we had the proper medical logs rather than just Ratchet and Velocity's estimates for the crew’s energon consumption rates and fuel efficiency. Underestimating even one person's needs could leave us starving light years away from any supply outposts."

"That... sounds awful," Rewind said. "But I meant, um, about after what happened. With Dominus."

general context to help me explain why this particular bit jumped out at me to talk about: the whole reason for (Re)Experience existing is that the backstory we see for Rewind in MTMTE/LL gave me this strong feeling that he must have gone through some pretty drastic growth between then and now. V1 Rewind quoting “every shape serves a purpose” before he sacrifices himself to stop Overlord read to me (in retrospect with what we later learn about that slogan) like he must have internalised at least some functionist rhetoric, and we know what life must have been like for him as a disposable. but Rewind doesn’t act like someone who’s still viewing the world through a functionist lens, and he doesn’t act like he thinks of himself as disposable and never expects others to treat him like one.

that’s really interesting to me, because it makes the Rewind we see in the comic feel like the end-point of a character arc we never witness but can sort of sense in the drastic difference between how you would expect him to be based on his backstory and how he actually is. originally i wanted to write something that explored what that pre-canon character growth might have been like in a more straightforward way, but i know i don’t have the stamina to write the 100k character study fic it would need. instead, the importance Rewind puts on experiences making people who they are gave me an idea for another approach; what if a plot device cut Rewind off from his memories and put him back in the headspace of who he was in that very different part of his life, and i could explore what he might have once been like and how that differs from who he became, via the reactions of the people that know Rewind as he is now? and thus (Re)Experience came into existence

back to the flashback in chapter 3. i think this might have been the first concept i had for a moment to have Rewind re-experience? ever since the Dying of the Light arc revealed that Rewind’s other husband also made a habit of hiding stuff from him i’ve wanted to get into his head about it

funnily enough i actually wasn’t… that invested in Minimus before writing this? it took a while (plus some great fan meta) for him to grab my interest. but even though i wasn’t too huge on him at the time, i couldn’t deny that he was by far the most interesting person for Rewind to be talking to about Dominus. the personal investment of being his brother provided some great creative opportunities, and while i’m 100% a proponent of picking which characters to include in your fic based on how much you personally like them (see: Whirl turning up, Rodimus being given a key role), i just couldn’t pass Minimus’ narrative potential by. and then i got to thinking about how interesting it is to have someone who was actually there, when Rewind started working for Dominus. besides the broad overview, we don’t know a lot about what Rewind’s employment by Dominus was like. it’s possible that he was recognised as a fully fledged person and treated as such from the get go, but it’s also possible that the Ambus brothers had internalised the (at the time widespread) view that disposables were incapable of true sapience and were more objects-to-be-used than people, and it took time for them to fully reassess and reject that idea. for (Re)Ex i went with the latter, partly bc Chromedome saying befriending Rewind is what made Dominus realise how marginalised disposables were makes it seem more likely of the two, and partly bc of how it makes Rewind’s relationship with Dominus both more tangled and dynamic imo

and then while writing this flashback, i sort of slowly realised that i actually find this bit of backstory really interesting when applied to Minimus. as someone who can be very rule-oriented, i could see him as having incorporated functionist viewpoints into his perspective early in his life, and then interrogating and putting conscious effort into unlearning them later on. it’s this potential point of character development which isn’t actually in the canon iirc, but pretty readily suggested by what is there, just like what Rewind has going on. and i am an absolute sucker for parallels and mirroring, so after i noticed that Minimus’ role in (Re)Experience just absolutely ballooned. originally he was only going to be in this flashback, but then when i wanted to change up the status quo and introduce an outsider to the situation who is a safe ally for Rewind to trust, i thought about this similarity and it made Minimus the obvious option (and no spoilers for chapters i haven’t posted yet, but then i got invested in Rewind & Minimus being friends and just kept. adding Minimus into scenes he wasn’t supposed to be in. would you believe i actually solved the massive plot issue with (Re)Experience's climax i’ve been grappling with for years by doing this. i was like ‘but what if they didn’t get split up and Minimus was here for this?’ and it all just sorted itself out. turns out i can solve any problem with this fic by just adding more of this dude lmao)

A few thoughts on Transformers deaths

(Spoilers for late IDW1, I suppose)

I’m honestly okay with what happened with Skids. He’s a character I liked going in but his MTMTE version never quite clicked with me, and Nautica’s later arc almost felt like meta commentary on how little it affected me compared to other deaths.

But the thing I really don’t get is how people could get incredibly worked up over Mirage, or especially someone like SLAPDASH, but just shrug off the likes of Cliffjumper, Ironhide, Cosmos, and Elita-1 in Unicron. Roberts has this big reputation as being bloodthirsty, but if you don’t count characters he created himself or the ones Roche killed in LSotW, Barber has a bigger body count of named characters with personalities just within the 7 issues of Unicron than Roberts does in his whole run (I’m counting Monstructor as one and not counting the Maximal horde at all). Some are vital to the story, but a lot are just as cannon foddery as Mirage. I waited 8 years to see Sixshot again and Barber killed him in a footnote, there’s not a single MTMTE/LL death that irked me that much.

I just hate that I feel like I’m walking on eggshells to mention anything I like from that series without people coming out of the woodwork to crap on it.

Eugenesis Part One: Final Thoughts

Yes, yes, I’m going a bit out of order here. 

I’d like to address something before I move on to this next bit. It’s about an issue I have with this novel.

There’s a difference between good plotting and good writing.

With a good plot, you can get people interested in the story you’re telling. Plot points, set pieces, settings- they’re all easy ways to get folks hooked.

Good writing keeps the reader hooked. A great writer can keep someone invested while the characters do their taxes and talk about the weather, even when there were far more exciting things going on beforehand.

The plotting in Eugenesis is good. In some places it gets really good, great even.

The writing in Eugenesis leaves a bit to be desired.

There have been several points where I had to force myself to keep going, because without being driven by characters I’m familiar with or an interesting plot-point, or just losing it over some of the more ‘cursed’ passages… it’s a little dull. I try to keep in mind that I’m barely a sixth of the way through the book, but it’s still a bit of a slog in between set pieces.

That’s not to mention some of the bizarrely flowery prose that’s randomly sprinkled throughout the pages, desperately trying to liven up scenes that would otherwise be dead in the water. You get hamfisted attempts to make commentary on the comics industry told solely through dialogue with a character who’s been introduced a second ago, and will likely never return.

This is a weird, awkward novel, and without being written by Roberts himself, it would have faded into obscurity, never to be seen again. It wouldn’t even have a stub page on the wiki, due to the fact that this isn’t officially licensed under the franchise. Eugenesis got very lucky it’s still around at all.

So, how does this compare to what Roberts put out in 2012? Well, I can tell you he certainly improved, which- thank god for that.

Some things he writes very well, and others not so much, and it’s not even always completely his fault- sometimes you have certain contractual obligations have to be fulfilled if you want to keep working.

However, I can see where his weaknesses lie. There’s this issue his writing has, where a lot of the character voices start to run together- they all speak very similarly, and I’m not talking about the accent. It got to the point where in my first read through of More Than Meets The Eye, I had to sit and think about whether I wanted to continue with the series, it stuck out so much. And I fucking adore MTMTE/LL.

Roberts strengths lie in character interactions. They lie in making characters do things, and giving them the motivations to justify doing them. They aren’t so strong as to make it so space-Hitler is completely redeemable, but they’re still there. His strengths lie in planting plot seeds.

Roberts is a plot-centric writer. He’s a character-centric writer- really more of a relationship-centric writer, really. All the stuff bridging between those bits and pieces takes a little more work for him, it seems.
