Giles X reader

Me and @my-head-is-an-animal were talking and agreed what needed to be done about the lack of fics for Giles. So here we are.

Summary: Giles helps you through an anxiety attack.

Word count: 1k ish.

Warnings: contains descriptions of an anxiety attack, loneliness, vague mentions of how people and life can be unkind sometimes. Heavy hurt comfort vibes I can't stop thinking about being comforted by this man okay.

A:N- everyone experiences anxiety differently and this fic will reflect my experiences, but I hope this brings comfort to anyone reading this, as it did for me when writing it. As always 18+ only thankyou! This took SO long to write so please be nice and kind thanku 😊.

Giles knew immediately he liked you. There was something about you, something, endearing.

You walked in one evening after seeing the assistant required poster on the town noticeboard and when Giles had asked what qualifications you had you responded simply and almost nervously, 'I love books'.

He'd held out his hand and chuckled 'your hired'.

You'd become fast friends with the British librarian ever since. Helping him get books for his students… and the buffy gang, you soon became familiar with the layout of the library.

You spent your evenings curled up in the chair, books piled lazily on the floor, and before long you didn't even need to hesitate to remember the shelf when giles or willow asked for a specific book.

You stayed late most nights, Giles would turn off the main lights and make you a cup of tea while you read and he researched. He looked adorable with his glasses hanging out his mouth when he was thinking .He'd hand you the steaming mug, saucer too, because he's Giles, with a smile each time.

It's been a busy week, every night you've stayed late with giles and buffy and co to help deal with some demon or other.

Finally, the demon was dealt with and buffy and everyone left to have some sort of socialising after a night of battling. You just want to curl up with a book, you've felt off all day and nothing has quite snuffed out that feeling. Usually when you felt like this you'd curl up under the thickest blankets you could find in your place and you'd fiddle with the chain on your neck.

It was a simple piece of jewellery, the small circle hanging in the middle of the chain contained your favourite quote from one of your favourite books in tiny writing. It brought you comfort whenever your hands reached for it. The words brought you comfort.

You'd always found more comfort and affection in books than in people. In the past, life or rather, some people in it, had not been kind to you.

And when that happened, you found your escape in books.

"Tea?" Giles asks, sighing, sending a small smile your way.

"Mm no thanks" you shook your head. You shivered slightly.

"Are you alright?" Giles asks, eyebrows raised, you never turn down a cup of tea from him, it worried him slightly, but he pressed on.

"Mm, just tired" you assured him with a small smile.

Giles is unconvinced.

"Right" he says, and he does that little nod that he does when he's not really paying attention when he's researching and someone talks to him, except this time he is paying attention.

"I'll just put these books back and then I'll get off for the night" you say, your not looking at him though, almost past him. standing up and gathering the books with one hand, the other hand wraps around the chain hanging round your neck, twisting it round your fingers.

"Y/n?" Giles asks, and you're far too concentrated on holding onto the pile of books in your hand you don't notice he's right in front of you.

"Giles" you say, finally looking up at him, your sure that his piercing but concerned gaze can see right through you, right through to your heart hammering in your chest.

Giles takes the books out of your hand gently and places them on top of the shelf.

His hand comes back and lingers on your arm.

"What's the matter?" And he asks so softly you think you might break down then.

Your hand goes back to fiddle with the chain around your neck, it's the only thing you know for a fact brings you even an ounce of comfort ,but Giles reaches for your hand instead, pulling it away, he closes his hand, which is much bigger than yours, around it.

It's a gesture your unfamiliar with.

"I- I'm fine" you whisper

Giles frowns, his hand still holding yours.

"It's alright" he whispers, and the hand that's on your arm squeezes

You close your eyes and let out a shaky breath.

"Hey look at me" Giles says softly.

"m sorry, I don't, i cant- " you go dizzy, your breathing becomes faster, your head spins.

"Breathe,y/n" Giles says. His tone is laced with concern as he looks at you, your chest heaves as he moves his hand to your chin.

"Y/n, i got you" he says softly, his hand swipes at a tear running down your cheek.

"No" you whisper, and Giles frowns again but this time its because he can see you're not used to this kind of… affection, of this kind of.. comfort. And Giles feels a sudden pang of sadness at that,and then an overwhelming urge to make sure you never feel so alone again.

"Come here" he whispers, pulling you into his tight embrace.

You wrap your arms around him like your clinging to a life raft.

"There you go, I got you love" he comforts.

Giles holds you until you've stopped shaking.

"What can I do?" He asks after a moment, still not letting you go.

"im cold" you whisper,

"and tired" you added.

"Come on" he says, ushering you over to the couch in his little office.

Giles shrugs off his jacket and places it over you, when he's satisfied your sufficiently tucked in with his jacket, he sits in the corner of the couch, pulling you close to him.

you bring your knees up to your chest as you curl into him.

His fingers move slowly up and down your arm, comforting. Safe.

"Giles?" You whisper, and he stops and moves slightly.

"Hmm?" He says

"Thankyou" you say softly, and you wrap your arm around his waist and drift off in his embrace.

okey another little ideas and headcanons for the argentina cross guild au??thing?? idk

im having so much fun doing this...

they arent called cross guild, they are called Cruz de los Giles, name provided by our beloved chairman of course. at the proposition both mihawk and crocodile were completely opossed ("seriously, clown. no ones gonna respect us with a name like that") but buggy insists that its a great name for a mild undercover while the thing grows wealthier and more powerful until eventually the whole world will learn to fear Cruz de los Giles unexpectedly. and well, thats a good point and crocodile redunctanly agrees. mihawk is very amused (though he doesnt show it) at the idea of being called Cruz de los Giles because he thinks that it represents very well all the people working under them.

obviously all of buggys crew are so fucking amused. Cruz de los Giles sounds so good. its hilarious. everybody loves it.

they dont live in Karai Bari island. instead, the island they live in looks like the zone around El Bolson (incluiding Lago Puelo and El Hoyo), the mountains, the cascades, the villages, the sand sorrounding some lakes.

they recreute the villagers or kill them off idk, lets pretend that instead of being big villages they are just tiny small populated villages easy to conquer idk

and the big tents and stuff is located around el bolsons main plaza, but mihawk crocodile and buggy live in actual houses they stole and redecorated at their style so they just look like that photo of the black house next to the pink house yea that one.

buggy alvida and mr 3 are of the few who shower both willingly and regularly because it isnt sea water, it doesnt affect devil fruit users, is literally de-iced water so even tho its ICE COLD its still cool to shower and no excuse.

they sometimes shower in some lakes sometimes in some rivers sometimes below cascades.

it doesnt matter if they go showering alone or not, they agreed to always take richie with them because cougars and jabalis are everywhere and yes, they could easily defend themselves from some wild animals but they would prefer not to fight with their ding dongs out. so if they have richie he sleeps just at the shore of whichever body of water theyre in and just his presence will scare away the wild animals.

its funny for crocodile to watch the clown run wildly in the maze trying to get out while mihawk just, walks calmly and gets out. and if someone were to ask buggy, crocodile doesnt deserve to be called winner because he obviously cheats with his sand powers and nobody likes cheaters. Band Candy is a fun episode, and I don't really have much to say about it beyond that.

While Dead Man's Party is bad because it struggles at the things Buffy is usually good at (characterisation, dialogue, and clever use of monsters-as-metaphor), and while Beauty and the Beasts is bad because it spends more time than usual on the things Buffy is typically bad at (consistent world-buildng, plotting, the handling of side character deaths, special effects) without being any better at them than usual, Band Candy is the show playing to its strengths.

A particularly boring pedant might ask why "teenage" Giles is going around calling himself Ripper when The Dark Age established Giles only left Oxford and adopted the Ripper persona in his early twenties (and I know: I've asked before), or why Buffy leaves Giles' house with her mom's car keys in the middle of the day only for it to be fully dark outside in the next scene when she's driving around with Willow, or why Ethan goes from being tied up in a warehouse to leaving town fully paid by Mr. Trick. But this feels like obvious, unimportant nitpicking; the episode itself does not live or die on the answer to these questions.

What makes the episode work is ... well, the things that make most good Buffy episodes work. The characterization (particularly of the band candy influenced Giles and Joyce and Snyder -- all of them acting unlike themselves but in a way that still tells us something about who they normally are); the use of metaphor (Buffy's desire for more independence being framed as her wanting to be allowed to drive, contrasted with the fact that we later see she really is a terrible driver and her Mom was probably right to not want her in a car); the callbacks to the show's previous history (I think it's honestly a minor tragedy that Ethan didn't get to be a character who appeared once every season); the hints we're starting to get about the Mayor and what he might be up to, and the fun interactions between him and Mr. Trick; the convincing awkwardness between Buffy and an almost-fully-recovered Angel (I mean, just the way her face falls when he responds to her light "pretty soon you won't even need me" with a gruff "that'd be better" speaks volumes, and that's before we get on to her reluctance to admit she's broken up with Scott or her offer to have Angel smell her), the way Buffy's fears about the SATs are blended into the wider episode, bookending the episode with a "rite of passage" into adulthood.

It's just a very solid episode. I liked it a lot. I can't quite imagine it being anybody's favorite, but it's hard to imagine anybody disliking it either.

Lastly, Band Candy is typical of many good Buffy episodes of this period in that it feels Faith should be in it but she very obviously isn't. I assume that this episode was written when it still wasn't decided how pivotal her character would be this season. Still, after appearing on the show for a run of three episodes in a row up to this point it's a little jarring that we don't even get a throwaway line about her being missing (in the way we will in Helpless in a few episodes from now). I guess the headcanon handwave is that Faith skipped town for a few days after how badly going to the Homecoming dance with Buffy panned out for her?

(Oh, and the Willow/Xander subplot isn't much fun either, but I'll talk about that more when we get to Lovers Walk.)

Finally answering this question from @gayvillainera (from an ask game a while back).

I‘ve decided to go all out for this and will be giving you my opinions on Danny, Rebecca and Beatrice, since they‘re all POV characters in my current fic.

1) Danny: No fictional character has had this much of a chokehold on me since I first listened to Wicked in 2018. I don‘t think it‘s possible for me to get enough of this character. Every single actress, acting choice, (un-)official sequel or fic delights me. I love seeing what other people make of her. Personally, I see Danny as a person who knows what it‘s like to be extremely lonely. She has some interesting parallels with Ich in this regard — I imagine her as someone who probably grew up pretty isolated / did not have many friends or family, so when she started working for Rebecca, she was all too ready to pour all of her affection and devotion into her. Another interesting parallel between Danny and Ich is their lack of first names. Both Mrs Danvers and Mrs de Winter are names that almost double as (job) titles. What‘s devastating about Danny‘s name is that the more intimate name we do have for her is a nickname given to her by Rebecca. Almost every aspect of her life is defined by Rebecca and later her absence. In terms of writing her, I adored writing soft, stoic, traumatised Danny for Was Wird Aus Uns. As you‘ll see, Danny in Nie Wirst Du Mir Ganz Gehören is quite different — she still has that tenderness that I think comes through in almost all versions of her, but I‘m leaning into her jealousy and possessiveness over Rebecca a lot more. Bottom line, I adore Danny. I love her complexity and all-consuming yearning.

2) Rebecca: Rebecca fascinates me. I have trouble with readings that paint her as purely evil. The novel is a lot more subtle than that. Another thing that irks me about one-dimensional interpretations of Rebecca is that they have a tendency to leave out important context — for example that Rebecca would have had a much harder time divorcing Maxim than he would have divorcing her. In terms of my own reading of the character, as with Danny, I enjoy Rebecca‘s complexity. I like reading her and Maxim as two people who are actually quite similar in temperament, but have very different approaches to tradition and morality. For my current fic, I‘m trying to figure out Rebecca‘s motivations — what does she want? Does she love Danny and if so, in what way does she love Danny? I like playing around with the idea that putting on the mask of Mrs de Winter would have put quite the strain on Rebecca, no matter how proficient she was at it. She feels like a person who has never fully learned to identify and deal with her emotions, at least partly because Danny is so ready to deal with everything for her. I have a lot more thoughts but they‘re difficult to put into words, so you‘ll have to wait for my next few chapters :)

3) Beatrice: Darling Beatrice. I love her. My favourite Beatrice headcanon is that her marriage to Giles is purely platonic (I like to think of Giles as ace) and that these two are devoted life partners. Part of this headcanon is that Giles actually was the one to introduce Beatrice to her romantic life partner, a woman named Grace (stay tuned for my Beatrice backstory fic). Furthermore, I love Beatrice‘s ability to have chemistry with every single woman in the narrative. I can see her with pretty much everyone. In my current fics, Bee is about 8 years older than Maxim and since I mistakenly assumed Maxim is 45, that makes her 53. I wouldn‘t write Beatrich with this kind of age difference, but I can see it in different contexts. I don‘t want to spoil too much about my current fic, but I‘m in love with the idea that both Danny/Beatrice and Rebecca/Beatrice have hooked up/are hooking up and the messy dynamics this could lead to between the three of them.

it is going to be a very long time before this becomes an actual fic, for a lot of reasons, but i really really wanted to write something set in this universe, so i am posting this as a tumblr-only exclusive!!!

The thing was that everything made him think of Pippa. He saw a gorgeous pair of earrings that reminded him of the intricate jewelry and gorgeous brooches she favored, and had to stop himself from paying some exorbitant amount of money to get a little summer gift for his goddamn colleague. His friend. His friend, fifteen years older than him and a woman besides, when Jimmy had fallen out of the habit of dating women after the second boyfriend who’d made a disparaging comment about it.

The age thing was less disconcerting than the woman thing, to be honest. There was still this part of him that hated the notion of dating a woman, if only because it would get back to Enyos, and then Enyos would tell Dad, and then Dad would get all boisterous and joyful about how he’d been right, his Yakov was just being a little rebellious, but he’d gotten over it, and maybe next time he sowed his wild oats it wouldn’t be with a gadje spinster who he’d obviously just picked to keep giving his family the runaround. Dating a woman felt like compromising, and Jimmy didn’t compromise. Didn’t want anyone to think that he would.

But Pippa…

Pippa’s laugh was like music. He’d heard it only twice and couldn’t stop thinking about it. She had giggled so hard at his bullshit after the Master that she’d spilled her beer, and he’d offered to get her another one, but she’d looked up, sweet and earnest, and placed a hand over his, and said, “Oh, James, don’t trouble yourself on my account!” And James wasn’t even Jimmy’s name, but he hadn’t corrected her this time, because he’d loved how cute it was that she’d heard the nickname and decided to make even his first name as formal as she possibly could. She’d rather be wrong than be informal. He loved that about her.

He loved her. Could love her. Wasn’t sure. He’d felt the draw to her like a magnet from the moment he met her, with those little loose strands of hair escaping from her bun, as though not even her own best efforts could effectively constrain her. And now he knew her well enough to know that she didn’t believe him when he said she was special, important, wonderful, and the thought of just giving up on her sat wrong with him. But he didn’t want to compromise, couldn’t prove his family right, so it wasn’t—he’d get over it. He’d meet a hot guy and he’d stop thinking about her.

(At the Bronze, she’d unbuttoned the top two buttons of her blouse, the heat of the crowded room getting to her as she delicately fanned herself with a nearby flier. Jimmy had seen a smattering of freckles against porcelain skin and imagined, for just a moment, burying his mouth there, hearing that soft little oh! she would make, just like when he surprised her in the morning with a cup of tea. He’d imagined making tea for her in the morning. Somehow, that second thought had been more uncomfortably revealing than the first.)

He kissed a guy at Burning Man—more than kissed, and more than just the one guy—and every time, it felt like he was betraying something by doing it. He hated it. He’d pushed through the guilt in high school, hadn’t he? Gotten over the fucked-up part of him that thought he was supposed to be kissing only girls. She was dragging him back towards someone he didn’t want to be.

(Except there was still that part of him, now, that felt like he was supposed to be kissing only guys. Like he’d lose his guy-kissing street cred if someone like Pippa caught his eye. And the kisses, they weren’t—they weren’t wrong so much as they made him think of her, and how she might feel if she knew he was spending his summer kissing other people. Not that she’d care. He knew she wouldn’t. But if she did—)

Giles was methodically and somewhat obsessively reorganizing her teas for the third time when the phone rang. Loose leaves flew everywhere as she jumped; she swore profusely, then stalked over to the still-ringing phone, yanking it free from the receiver. “What,” she snapped.

“Not quite the warm welcome I was hoping for, but I’ll take it,” Jimmy teased.

Giles almost dropped the receiver. “Jimmy!” she said. Then, remembering, “That is—Mr. Calendar!”

“Did I finally get a Jimmy?”

“You did not,” said Giles. “You misheard.”

“So we start with displeasure, and we continue on into gaslighting.” Jimmy sounded like he was trying not to laugh. “This is a fun phone call. Definitely worth the last of my spare change.”

“You’re insufferable,” said Giles. Jimmy started laughing. She pressed her lips together, remembered belatedly that he couldn’t see her, and allowed herself the smile. “Is there a reason for this call, or have you just decided to extend your, your haranguing into the summer hours?”

Jimmy’s laughter tapered off into a strange, breathless silence. Just as Giles was about to ask somewhat snidely if he’d been attacked by a vampire, he said softly, “Uh, do you—like earrings?”

“Do I what?” said Giles.

“…Do you like earrings?” Jimmy repeated.

“This is what you called about?”

“Work with me here, Pippa.”

The part of Giles that cared about things (and had been noticing recently that things did seem to include Jimmy) was starting to fill her with fluttery warmth. I missed you! it was saying. I missed you! I can’t believe you’re calling me! Doing her best to shove her feelings back into the lockbox she was usually very good at keeping the damn things in, Giles said stiffly, “I—I like earrings well enough. Usually. Why?”

“No reason,” said Jimmy. “Follow-up question. Would you lend me seventy dollars?”

“Why?” said Giles.

“Well, if you buy them, they’re not—I’m not—” Jimmy floundered, then said, “I’m just buying something for a friend. I’m not—it’s not a gift, it’s just—you know, it’s with your money, so it’s not like I—”

Quite accustomed to this incomprehensible brand of Jimmy Calendar Logic™, Giles listened patiently, then said, “How exactly do you propose I lend you seventy dollars? We’re in different states.”

“Just pay me back when I see you.”

“Pay you back? This would imply that you’re the one borrowing money from me!”

“If I was getting something for you,” Jimmy started, and then stopped. Giles could practically hear his mortification through the telephone line. “Which I’m not,” he added. “I’m not. Because we’re colleagues, and this is my summer break, and I’m not—I mean, I’m not thinking about you. I just, there was this thing that pretty much made me think about you, so I felt like I should get it for you, but I didn’t want to make it weird, so I figured you should pay for it. So that it’s not a gift. Because a gift would imply that I—but I don’t, so—”

Somewhere between irritated and hurt, Giles said, “I’d hardly wish to put you through this level of turmoil on your break, Jimmy. If you’d prefer not to think about me, I don’t see why you should have to get me anything when you’re on vacation—”

“No!” said Jimmy, so vehemently that Giles’s eyebrows shot up. “That’s not what I’m saying, I just—shit.” He let out a weak breath, then said, “I can’t stop thinking about you. I can’t. I’ve been trying to play it cool all summer, but I don’t want to—I can’t play games like that. I’m not good at it. And I wanted to get you some earrings, but that’s—I don’t—this isn’t my MO, Pippa. I don’t do shit like this. But I—I don’t want you to think it’s because of you, or because I don’t want to be around you, or—or anything to do with you, at all. I’m a fucking mess. You’re—” He laughed helplessly. “Pippa, you’re incredible. I just don’t know what to do with it. Or with me. Or—”

This was not at all the effortlessly confident man who had gently-but-firmly insisted that Giles go out for a friendly drink with him after work, or somehow roped her into a thoughtful philosophical discussion about the difference between computers and books. Giles had been completely convinced that Jimmy was serious in his assertion that their dynamic need only be platonic—in large part because she couldn’t see a single world where an impossibly handsome technology professional who had half the school swooning would have any interest in a staid librarian in her early forties—but she was now being presented with startling evidence to the contrary, and didn’t know what to make of it. He couldn’t possibly be this flustered about her. He could have anyone he wanted, easily, and he was—on the phone with her, being utterly ridiculous about earrings and money lending. In the middle of a summer that he himself had described as wild and adventurous.

“What color are the earrings?” she asked.

“Hghk?” said Jimmy, who seemed to have worked himself up too thoroughly to muster up a coherent response.

“What. Color. Are. The. Earrings.” Penelope enunciated every syllable.

“The—” Jimmy swallowed. “Green.”

“What sort of green?”

“Jesus fucking Christ, Pippa,” Jimmy was starting to laugh, brimming with dizzy relief. “I don’t know. Green. I’d have to go back and check again, and I don’t have another quarter on me.”

“You said they reminded you of me. I’d think you’d be able to be more specific,” said Penelope. Her heart was pounding. “Would you say blue-green, or, or—”

“Green like your eyes,” said Jimmy. “I don’t know shit about the color spectrum. That’s not of relevance to my profession.”

“Nothing is of relevance to your profession,” said Penelope. “Your profession will be obsolete come the new millennium.”

“I am so honestly fascinated by the way that your mind works,” said Jimmy.

“That is a dreadfully condescending statement.”

“Not everything is condescension.” Jimmy sounded incandescently happy. Happy to be talking to her. Penelope had no idea what to do with that. “I like you. You know that.”

“And you said seventy dollars?”

A strange pause. “No,” said Jimmy. “No, uh, I’m just gonna get them for you.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” said Penelope. “You said you don’t want things to be complicated; I’ll make them simple. I can pay for the earrings. I’d like them.”

“I want to get you things you like,” said Jimmy. There was a note of breathy earnestness to it that made Penelope’s heart skip a beat. “You don’t indulge yourself enough, Pippa. I wanna help you with that.”

Penelope’s breath hitched. For just a moment, she imagined it—running her hands through that soft, dark hair, pressing tender kisses to that horribly clever mouth of his—and then, blushing, she pushed the heated image away. “Indulgences aren’t something I can afford,” she said unsteadily. “Not as a Watcher, a-and not—”

“—as a lady Watcher,” Jimmy finished. “I know. But I—I want to get you the earrings.”

“You said—”

“I changed my mind,” said Jimmy. “I want you.” There was a shocked silence before he hastily clarified, “I, I want you—I want you to be happy. With the earrings. I want earrings for you. I want—goddamn.” A weak laugh. “Too late to take that back?”

Pippa pressed her lips together, grateful that he couldn’t see the sparkle in her eyes. “Do you want to?”

Part One: Characters’ Shadows + Symbolism

Behind the cut because it’s long and detailed.

So for those of you unfamiliar with how Deaf West-style productions go, basically they recontextualize plays by making some characters deaf (and it changes the dynamics by a lot!) while hearing actors voice their dialogue. Traditionally, the hearing characters speak and sign at once, but that aspect’s been criticized, with some suggesting they be shadowed by signers. I decided to run with that to fix that aspect as well as to allow all characters to benefit from their shadows as inner selves. (I noticed somewhere along the way while I was conceptualizing this that characters shadowed by voices are more outspoken about what they want to gain or avoid losing, whereas characters shadowed by signers are quieter about it, often because they’re hiding something or have some aspect of them taken for granted.)

Characters who have signers:

Proctor (his signer represents his guilt)

Hale (his signer represents his certainty and idealism, which eventually turns to guilt upon realizing his certainty was misplaced)

Parris (his signer represents his greed and preoccupation with his reputation)

Danforth (his signer, like Hale’s, represents his certainty)

Mr. Putnam (his signer, like that of Parris, represents his greed, but is also his exploitative, vindictive nature)

Betty (her signer probably just represents the fact that she misses her mother; she only ever speaks in Act One, but one could imagine she’d never express something like that in front of her father)

Characters who have voices:

Abigail (her voice represents her infatuation with John and her manipulative nature)

Elizabeth (her voice represents her desire for the truth and her complicated feelings towards John)

Mary (her voice represents her timidity and overly innocent nature--this seems to fit the characterization of the other girls as well)

Tituba (her voice represents her love for the children, her desire to return to Barbados, and her fear of losing the few opportunities she has to control her own life)

Giles (his voice, like Elizabeth’s, represents his desire for the truth, but is also his uneducated background, argumentative tendencies, bravery, and strong morals)

the Nurses (their voices are their reasonable natures--insert some half-baked pun about how they’re the literal voices of reason now)

Mrs. Putnam (her voice is her grief, desperation, confusion, and general lack of knowledge about the situation)

the interview part ii

INITIAL SITDOWNS

There had been no request to parley, no paper with a time and location to meet this time. Instead, there had been thunderous beating against the door, a show of an escort down the halls of Alcott. Every step echoed the pounding of his heart, like a war drum marching him to his execution. They hadn’t said much— in fact, he was fairly certain they hadn’t said anything at all outside of Jesse Hart? We need you to come with us.

So, here he now sat, hands folded in front of him on the table as two officers stared at him from across it. One sat directly in front of him while the other leaned casually against the wall opposite. It was the most cliché show of good cop bad cop he’d ever seen and he briefly wondered if they’d rehearsed it before coming in here. He almost opened his mouth to say as much, all false bravado beneath the fluorescent lights, but he at least had enough sense to know he probably didn’t want to goad them into playing their parts.

He sat alone, his vehement refusal to have Francesca here to feed any and all of this information back to his father leaving him lawyerless and feeling incredibly out of his element. 

Deep breath in, slow breath out. 

He could do this.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Hart. I’m Officer Giles and this is my partner,” he gestured to Tall and Stoic against the wall, “Officer Prestwood. We had some follow up questions for you regarding Greer Morrison.”

Jesse’s eyes flicked between the two of them as they were introduced, chin tilting once in acknowledgment. Good Cop Giles stared at him for a long moment as if he expected Jesse to have something to say to that. He didn’t. He might not have had his lawyer with him, but he wasn’t totally unprepared for this. The less he said, the less they had to use against him. 

“Alright, then. Let’s get right to it, shall we?” Officer Giles flipped to a blank sheet of paper and looked at Jesse expectantly. “Can you describe your relationship with Miss Morrison?”

His hands, still clasped together on the table in front of him tightened ever so slightly. “Like I said before, we had fun together.”

“We’ve heard from several of your peers that the two of you had a sexual relationship. You could imagine we were surprised to hear it since that was notably absent from your previous statement.” Good Cop Giles’ eyes seemed to darken and Jesse wondered if he’d read him all wrong. “Is that what you mean by ‘fun’?”

Jesse’s jaw tightened, refusing to break eye contact as they stared each other down. He could feel Officer Prestwood’s eyes on him as well, felt exposed beneath the scrutiny and had to actively work to keep his leg from bouncing beneath the table. “I’m not really sure what that has to do with a missing persons investigation—”

“We’re just trying to get a full picture of Miss Morrison’s life before she went missing, Mr. Hart. I’m sure you can appreciate the effort and will do whatever you can to help aid us in that?”

A sharp exhale. “Yes, we had a sexual relationship.”

“How long would you say your relations with Miss Morrison went on for?”

Jesse didn’t answer right away, his mind turning to that day he’d called it quits, and swallowed down a lump that seemed to lodge itself in his throat. “I don’t know. It was off an on for like a year or something. It wasn’t anything serious. It wasn’t, like, a relationship.”

“And were you aware that Miss Morrison had a boyfriend at the time?”

“Yes.”

He scribbled something down in his notes, the sound of pencil against paper deafeningly loud in this too quiet room. “Was Mr. Kallberg aware of the relationship between you and Miss Morrison?”

Something like frustration and petulance kicked up the nerves in his gut, had him biting back a retort that maybe they should ask Kit that question. “Not while it was going on, I don’t think.”

“But he’s aware of it now?”

Jesse laughed a little bitterly, head turning to the side as his tongue ran along the nearly-healed cut on his lip. “I’m fairly certain, yes.”

“’Fairly certain’?” The officer asked with a cocked brow. His eyes fell to Jesse’s mouth and Jesse pressed his lips tightly together, feeling suddenly too seen. “Is that where the bruises came from?”

“That’s awfully presumptuous,” Jesse said through teeth that were desperate to clench against this obvious baiting. “But I’d think whether or not he was aware would be a question for Mr. Kallberg.”

“Fair enough,” the officer said with a sneer, leaning forward a little in his seat. “Was the physical relationship between you and Miss Morrison ongoing?”

“No.”

“When did it end?”

Jesse’s palms seemed to slicken with sweat, his heart pounding in his ears just as fervently as it did against his ribcage. “I don’t know exactly.” A lie. “The beginning of the year? Sometime in February. Maybe April.”

More notes were scribbled and Jesse worked to keep his breathing even. He was caught between being too vague and looking suspect and giving too much information that might lead them down a path he didn’t want them on. “Why did it end?”

Jesse shrugged up his shoulders. “Like I said, it wasn’t a relationship. We just hooked up sometimes.”

“Would you say you ended on good terms?”

Jesse pinched the bridge of his nose, his mask of cool, calm, and collected cracking in two as his frustration built at this line of questioning. His words were clipped now, even as he desperately tried to rein himself back in. “I guess I haven’t been clear about the nature of our relationship. We were friends who fucked on occasion. We didn’t stop being friends.”

The officer cracked the kind of smile that sent fear straight into Jesse’s heart. Like a shot of adrenaline, he felt it hit his bloodstream like ice. Officer Giles looked like a hunter who had just cornered his prey. “Is that why she was in contact with you this summer?”

“What?” Genuine confusion, first, had seized control over his face. Where the fuck had that come from? And then he remembered. Himself. Fucking idiot.

“According to a statement made by a Mari Zuko to Dean Zuko, you and Greer exchanged text messages this summer when she was otherwise unreachable to everyone else. Care to elaborate on that?”

Wait— Mari Zuko? Had Kit just run his fucking mouth off to anyone who would listen for fuck’s sake? “I didn’t— There was no form of communication between Greer and me all summer. You can check my phone records if you don’t believe that.”

“So, you’re saying that Miss Zuko is lying?”

Jesse hated his smug smile, the way his eyes seemed to twinkle like he thought he was onto something, like he had Jesse by the throat and this case in the bag. “I’m saying she’s misinformed.”

“Then, please, inform us.”

He felt so incredibly stupid in that moment. A bullshit lie he’d tossed out on the spot because of what? An inferiority complex? A need to prove that he was better? He worked his jaw as his eyes fell to the table, his fingers picking at the skin around his nails. “I might have implied to Kit that I’d heard from her over the summer.”

“’Might have’?”

“Okay, whatever, I did. I told him I had texted Greer about a party happening later that night. He asked if I’d heard back from her and I said she hadn’t responded to that text. But I never said I talked to her.

“But you lead him to believe it all the same.”

Jesse gnashed his teeth together and tried to take a steadying breath, the cop’s taunting smile making every indignant part of him want to rise to the surface. “I didn’t realize not lying was a crime.”

“So why’d you do it?”

Jesse threw his hands up, his anger a beastly thing that refused to be caged any longer. “I don’t know!” he said, voice rising even as some part of it shook. “Because I’m an asshole?”

The officer looked at him for a long moment, that taunting glint in his eye a matador with a red flag and Jesse burned to rise to that challenge. But he only glared back, hands fisted together tightly on the table in an effort to keep him in place. Another tense moment passed before the officer flipped his notebook closed and smiled. “I think that’s all for today Mr. Hart. We’ll be checking those records so do stay close in case we need to speak to you again.” 

The intention was clear, the implication that they would be seeing each other again. Jesse said nothing, eyes hard as he pushed away from the table, the chair scraping across the floor noisily, and exited the room with a quiet snick of the door.

Meet the guy spearheading the Rock-afire Explosion renaissance...

Almost four years ago, I visited Billy Bob's Wonderland in Huntington West Virginia. When I posted about my experience here, I was surprised with the response it received and how active the fan community is. It led me to check out fan forums, the documentary, and led me to uncover this world that was alien to me. While I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore fan, I enjoy the show and appreciate the fan community that has kept what would otherwise be a dead franchise alive.

The Rock-afire Explosion is well loved, but the show featured at Billy Bob's Wonderland drew the ire of hardcore fans for years due to it's poor upkeep. So much so that in a now-deleted post from Billy Bob's Wonderland's Facebook page in 2018, the admin of the page politely asked fans to stop complaining about the state of the animatronics show. It was a common thread in fan circles to bash Billy Bob's for their poor care of what they considered living history.

Why is the condition of the show featured at Billy Bob's Wonderland so important to fans? It's the only establishment in the United States that features them to the public. You can see Rock-afire creator Aaron Fechter's show in his warehouse in Florida, but you better have 300 bucks to cough-up.

Why was the show at Billy Bob's so poorly taken care of? Did the owner's just not care? According to members of the fan community, the owners of Billy Bob's had a falling out with Rock-afire creator Aaron Fechter at some point. The falling out led to Fechter refusing to service the animatronics in any way. He refused to sell them masks, cosmetics and parts and went as far as cutting ties with anyone who worked with Billy Bob's Wonderland. This led to Billy Bob's figuratively repairing their show with bubble-gum and duct tape.

Unfortunately, it seemed like the show would go on until it fell apart. That was until Billy Bob's hired on superfan Braylon Giles in 2021 with the sole responsibility of fixing and maintaining the animatronics show. Has his work made a difference? Judge for yourself...

I've been able to visit a couple of times since Mr. Giles has been working there and the results are amazing in comparison to what it was before. The newly revived show has become a pilgrimage destination for fans, leading to Billy Bob's hosting it's first fan convention last summer.

Seeing how great his work was, I had to get up with Braylon and ask him about his work. Given that he's a busy guy, I just asked him a *few* questions.

(N:) So what's your first memories of the Rock-afire Explosion?

(BG:) My first memories of the Rock-Afire? I remember the button would flash automatically and I would run to press it, and then try to run back to my seat before the show started. As for before I could walk, I don’t remember much but I do have footage of myself opening gifts, but was completely mesmerized by the show so they had to turn me around so I would concentrate lol.

(N:) How did the opportunity come about to work at Billy Bob's Wonderland?

(BG:) A change of management basically. The owners youngest son is running his businesses now and wanted the show fixed.

(N:) Has your role been strictly to maintain the animatronics?

(BG:) As far as my responsibilities, mainly just the show, but I do play the role as assistant to the family I work for.

(N:) I've seen the show several times between 2018 and 2022 and your work speaks for itself. I can't imagine the effort that goes into keeping the Rock-afire active. Is this all self-taught? Was there any behind-the-scenes mentors showing you how to repair 40-year old robots?

(BG:) Some is self taught, but I had a team working alongside me occasionally. These were people who worked on the show from the SPP (Showbiz Pizza Place) days up until 2015. I also have to give credit to my mentor, David Ferguson. Not only did he construct our entire computer system but he also taught me all I know about mask making and the inner workings of the Rock-afire. He has a show in his backyard, so once a month I’d go to his place and learn everything from programming to cleaning valves.

(N:) So not only are you handling the animatronic repairs but you're handling the cosmetics as well? That's some dedication! While we're on the subject, I know you're not necessarily friendly with Aaron Fechter these days but you did have some interactions with him in the past. Did he give you any useful insight or advice as far as maintaining the show?

(BG:) Not much free insight or tips, as he was never for helping Billy Bob’s Wonderland. I did however subscribe to his premium subscription service. He sent out videos of him restoring a Billy Bob which was helpful.

(N:) To my knowledge, the Billy Bob's Wonderland show is the only public show in the U.S. -- Do you feel you have a responsibility to the fans to keep this show running in its best condition? In an age where even Chuck E. Cheese has scrapped their animatronics show, is it important to you keep the Rock-afire Explosion going?

(BG:) Oh absolutely! Not just to keep it up and running for the longtime fans, but for a whole new generation! I love watching the expression on people’s faces change when they realize what’s on stage nowadays. The locals are eating it up just as much as the Rock-afire fans. It’s truly amazing. Makes it hard to do maintenance during the day as we always have someone asking to see the show, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

(N:) What's the plans going forward with Billy Bob's as an establishment? The first fan convention looked to be a success, any other events like that planned for the future? Are there any other changes coming to Billy Bob's Wonderland, like new games, new merch, ect?

(BG:) We are looking to have a convention July 9th. As far as the future, we are looking to open up an online store as well as selling some CEI animatronics.

(N:) Wow, that's good to hear considering Rock-afire merchandise is so scarce. You're a young guy, do you see yourself doing this five years from now?

(BG:) Gosh, I hope I’m doing this in some way, shape, or form for the rest of my life lol. I’m at Billy Bob’s Wonderland for the next two years before I transfer colleges and proceed further with my education. So I have no idea how long I’ll be working on Rock-afire robots, but my dream is to work for Disney.

(N:) Anything you want to promote?

(BG:) Yeah I’d like to promote our Summer Bash on July 9th. It’s gonna be another spectacular convention with hopefully even more fans and things to see.

(N:) Final question: The band are having a skee-ball tournament -- who's winning?

(BG:) Looney Bird is definitely winning that tournament. He’s got that wing power going on. Definitely will work in his favor.

I think this flew over my head somehow all the other times I've watched this episode but why don't we talk more about how apparently MR GILES IS TRAINING ANDREW??? What is THAT like??? Can you IMAGINE mr Giles training ANDREW of all people?? My epilogue has always been Xander and Andrew hooked up, I never thought that Giles would personality train andew it would drive him mad

I love Gwendolyn Post. She's my favorite one-shot Buffy villain. I wish she were in more episodes. Imagine how much trouble she could have caused if she'd been playing the role of Faith's Watcher for weeks rather than just a couple of days. Imagine if the show could have explained Faith's absence from episodes like Band Candy and Lovers Walk and Gingerbread by saying she was off training with Mrs Post, rather than just ... not explaining it. Imagine if the writers had spent a few episodes faking that Gwendolyn Post was here to be the new Jenny Calendar figure for Season 3 (complete with hinting at a possible romantic arc with Giles?) before jumping straight to the ... well, the revelation that she wasn't.

That said, while I can forgive her insulting Giles's competence and lying about still being a Watcher and trying to kill Angel and trying to steal an evil artefact in her pursuit of evil magical power -- in fact, I heartily applaud all these things, especially the nonchalant way she reacts to finding out that the "friend of Buffy" she just tried to kill is actually a vampire -- I cannot find it in my heart to forgive her for making Faith sad. So, on balance, I'm glad Buffy killed her (even if the show doesn't give any weight to the fact this happened and will, in fact, carry on pretending that Buffy doesn't ever kill humans).

"A Gentleman of Maryland": the short life of Edward Giles

Edward Giles was a gentleman that was different from the other officers of the Extra Regiment, who marched Southward just like him. After all, Edward had ancestors who were immigrants to Massachusetts in the 1630s and some of the "earliest settlers of Baltimore County," specifically to "Old Baltimore." His short life is worth noting, with its twists and turns, as it tells a story which has never been fully told in print.

In the final years of military service: 1780-1782

Edward was a major in the Extra Regiment as noted by fellow officer Theodore Middleton and a soldier named Giles Thomas. Remaining records of the Maryland Line would also show his military service within the regiment. [1] He held many other military positions. He was reportedly a captain in Hazen's (2nd Canadian) regiment from 1778-1779, a major and aide-to-camp of General Morgan from 1779 to 1781, as he would note in a January 1781 letter. He was even made Brevet Major in Continental Army in March 1781 in honor of his role in the Battle of Cowpens, which he seems to have reported to Thomas Jefferson in a glowing account. [2] Until the close of the war, he served as an aide-to-camp of General Smallwood until the close of the war. Reportedly he also commanded Virginia militia in December 1780. [3] He was, undoubtedly, a "prolific correspondent" on the Extra Regiment.

In 1781, the Maryland General Assembly consider raising an all-Black regiment, similar to the state’s German Regiment, but did not do so. Even so, Edward wrote to Otho Holland Williams on June 1st arguing that

I wish the [Black] regiment would be raised. I am of the opinion that the Blacks will make excellent soldiers—indeed experience proves it…As to the danger of training them to Arms—tis the Child of a distempered Imagination. There are some people who are forever frightening themselves with Bugbears of their own Creation. [4]

The following year, Edward would be elected to the Continental Congress. However, he would not attend that year possibly related to his military service, but the true reason is not known. [5] The same year he would defend Samuel Chase, who then represented Maryland in the Continental Congress, from charges that he had used "secret congressional information to corner the market on flour," knowing that the French fleet would be arriving in Maryland. Specifically he wrote to James McHenry saying that the evidence before the Maryland General Assembly had shown Chase innocent and urged the author of the "Publius" essays to retract their charges. As a letter from Alexander Hamilton to McHenry revealed (also implied in McHenry's letter to Hamilton earlier that year), he was Publius, which comes as no surprise. Interestingly, Hamilton was angry that Edward had become a champion of Chase:

...You know that I can have no personal enmity to him, and that considerations of public good alone dictated my attack upon his conduct and character, influenced by a persuasion produced by the strongest authorities, that he was acting a part inconsistent with patriotism, or honor... I could not refuse it to my own feelings, to make him the most explicit and complete retribution...As to the discovery of my name demanded with such preposterous vehemence, by a volunteer in the dispute, I conceive myself under no obligation to make it...I have esteemed Major [Giles] character; and am sorry for his sake that he has so indelicately entered the lists; and made himself, not only the champion of Mr. Ch——e’s innocence in the present case, but of his virtues in general, certainly at best equivocal in spite of the Major’s panygerics. He should have recollected, that by an alliance with his family, he did not ally himself with his principles; and that he degrades Mr. Ch——e, as well as commits himself by unnecessarily taking up the glove for him...an apprehension of his, or any man’s resentment is a motive incapable of operating upon me or having the least share either in the concealment of my name or in the moderate return I make to his invectives.

In sum, Hamilton is saying that Edward is using formal speech (panegyrics) to defend Chase but that by doing so, he has made himself a champion of the latter's values. He also suggests that he is degrading Chase by doing so and standing by his side, allying with the Chase family. Hamilton then worried about people guessing his motives so he decides to keep his name hidden.

The next year, 1783, the county assessment for Harford County would note Edward's large landholdings, living in the same county as the former commanding officer of the Extra Regiment, Alexander Lawson Smith. He would own a total of 1,401 acres in Harford Lower Hundred. These acres were parceled out into seven land tracts:

90 acre tract called Mats Island

a 50 acre tract called Hog Neck

a 147 acre tract called Shepherds Choice

a 770 acre tract called Rumney Marsh

a 28 acre tract called Shepherds Adventure

a two acre tract called Minorca

314 acre tract called Atkinsons Purchase.

Soon this would all change.

The last hurrah: A trip to Bermuda

On January 30, 1783, Governor William Paca and the Council of Maryland would write to Admiral Robert Digby of the Royal Navy. Guided by the "Motives of Humanity" he would describe Edward's condition:

...Mr Edward Giles, a Gentleman of Maryland, is reduced to such a State, by a Disorder in the Breast, that his Physicians advise a Change of Climate as the only probable Means of his Recovery. As he is too Weak to undertake a long Voyage, his Friends are extremely desirous that he should try the Salutary Air of Bermuda, and it is at their earnest Solicitations that we have the Honor to request the Favor of your Excellency's Passport for a Vessel to carry him thither, with a Companion and two Slaves to attend him; and Provisions for the Use of the Crew and his Family. Candor requires that you should be informed, that Mr Giles has been an Officer in the American Army, and that he is, at this Time, a Delegate to Congress. We know not whether it is in your Excellency's Department to grant Mr Giles Permission to reside in Bermuda until his Health be restored, but if it is not, we persuade ourselves, from your acknowledg'd Attention to the Rights of Humanity, that you will be so obliging as to recommend him, for this Purpose, to the Governor of the Island [William Browne].

With the above letter showing his wealth, with two enslaved Blacks and a companion (his wife?), it is partially revealing. The following day, Edward would write a letter to Washington mentioning the above letter, noting that he felt "highly obliged" and hoped he could use the latter's influence to "obtain the Passport and Permission as soon as possible." As he described it,

"...With your Letter please to have that of the Governor and Council transmitted. I hope the Admirals not being furnished with the name and tonnage of the Vessel and number of hands will not impede the Business. It is impossible to give him this Information accurately as the Vessell is yet to be obtained. Thus far however he may be assured, she will be chosen for her good Cabbin Accomadations and her hands will not exceed eight. I am sensible that was Admiral Digby (tho’ an Enemy) acquainted with my Situation, he would blush to throw any obstructions in my Way. Your Excellency’s Veneration for humanity fills me with undoubting hopes that you will leave no means unessayed to accomplish this interesting Business. It is the opinion of my Physicians, that the month of March and April in this Climate might so confirm my Disorder as to make it an [   ] for Life. My Fate hangs on every passing hour, a small Delay may prove fatal to my Existence. Excuse the Anxiety of an Invalid, and believe Me to be with Sentiments of real Regard"-

This desperate plea would not go unanswered by Washington. Twelve days later on February 12, Washington would remark that he had received the letter, noting that the application should have "gone thro Mr Morris as Agent of Marine" and not himself, but since a "delay in the transaction of this business might have been fatal to you." As a result, he sent the Admiral a letter immediately, noting that any answer he receives shall be forwarded to him.

Sadly, he would not make it another month. On March 13, the Maryland Gazette would announce his death in a detailed obituary. They would describe him as a man with a "liberal education" and imbued "patriotism," calling him a "virtuous citizen" and an "excellent young man":

Quotes around this obituary seem to say it was reprinted from another paper which is not currently known.

Using the first line of the obituary, one can easily calculate that he died on March 10, 1783, with others coming to the same conclusion. [6]

Over 148 years later, on December 1, 1931, Samuel K. Dennis, J. Hall Pleasants, and J. M. Vincents, would write to the "gentlemen" of the Maryland Historical Society about whole episode. They would write about how the council requested that Admiral Digby, commanding the British fleet, issue a "passport to Edward Giles" who seems to have had "tuberculosis of the lungs" and noted "Giles died a week or two later before the request could be acted upon" with subsequent developments thereafter in "humane amenities...between the belligerents" when the main hostilities seemed to cease.

Beyond this, little information is known other than the fact that his death would be reported in British newspapers by June, and a possible federal veterans pension in later years. Due to his death in 1783, this means he would not be in any of the federal censuses and would have no direct federal pension records associated with him. Regardless, he would live on, in some way, shape, and form through his ancestors and scattered records in varied pensions of others.
