◇ Since there are no other Pyre rpers and thus I don't think I'll be stepping on anyone's toes by putting this into my muse's canon:
The 3 exiles that remained in the Downside for my Reader were Big Berturde, Pamitha, and Mae/the Moontouched girl. The Nightwings won every Liberation Rite except for the final one, for the Reader chose to have mercy on Oralech since he had already prevailed in the Liberation Rite before and should have gained his freedom.
The Reader keeps in contact as best they can with those who did not return via messenger imp, but it is difficult of course. For several months after escaping the Downside out of guilt the Reader heavily considered casting themselves back down to reunite with their lost friends. Despite being given both their blessing and Oralech's to take their freedom there's always a niggling voice in the Reader's mind saying they shouldn't have been the one to escape.

Summary: Volfred was in for a quiet night of reading only to unexpectedly share the experience
Trick or Treat exchange fic for the dear @laughingpinecone!
The night was never silent even while the Nightwings slept or were otherwise engaged. Nightly noises sounded outside and inside the wood creaked as the Blackwagon settled and the rustle of imp wings sounded whispered in the dark. The night lived and for now there was warmth and safety in it as Volfred sat ensconced in the corner letting the sounds surround him as he immersed himself in this latest find.
That find was a slim weathered book that appeared, after his perusal, to be both journal and a field guide of sorts. Many of the pages were tattered and stained to illegibility, however there were sections and even whole pages that could still be read and these he studied closely.
So engrossed was he that he nearly missed her presence entirely and would have had the lantern light not glinted off her hair as she started to back away.
Dae’s hair bobbed as she ducked her head in apology. “I disturbed you, I think? I’m sorry Mister Volfred.”
“Think nothing of it, my girl. Was there something you wished to ask?”
“I only wondered what kept your attention? It seems very interesting.”
“It is. From what is still legible the author documented their journey as well as observations of the flora they found here in the Downside.”
“Oh! That sounds very helpful!”
“Yes, but not, perhaps, in the way you think. Much of it is imprecise. Many statements are most egregious, in some cases dangerously so. Though, it must be said the author’s enthusiasm cannot be faulted.”
Dae perched on the stool. One of the tinier drive imps poked out from her hair, perhaps at the disturbance, yawned hugely showing its fangs and settled back down. If there was a second with any interest in the subject at hand, Volfred would hardly be the one to deny it.
“You said it could still be helpful?” Dae asked curiously.
“Indeed. While many of the written ‘facts’ may be dubious there is much to be gleaned yet: from the time, from the author themself, from what is and isn’t written.”
“You can see into the heart of it, I think?”
He paused momentarily, pondering her words. She was most wise in her way and any who denied it were all the more foolish.
“Precisely so.” He placed a delicate finger on the page. “See here.”
She peered at the page, brow furrowing in concentration. “But I do not understand the writing. I’ve tried and tried but, um, they won’t speak to me.”
“For this, it is not only the words themselves, but how they are written. See here how the author’s letters grow more rushed and untidy. They grew excited as they wrote, and here…” he moved down the text to a splatter of ink. “The pen leaked or likely slipped. They found excitement, joy in a place of exile and danger, and we can see it now so many years later.”
He carefully flipped back a few pages to an earlier entry. “Here, they discuss a settlement they came across. I’ve been on these roads; no such settlement exists anymore, yet in these pages a picture of it is painted and its memory preserved.”
Dae’s eyes widened. “A… painting of words. It speaks to you in so many ways.”
“A book such as this, it is a guide and a window. To another time. To the author’s emotions. To the conceptions and misconceptions of the time. It preserves what might have been lost. It is… a place of its own that may be revisited at any time.”
“And this book, I think, has done something else.”
“Oh? And what is that?”
She smiled brightly. “It has made you very happy, Mister Volfred.”
