Jowd needed to protect Kamila including, I think from her thinking she did it. It's not so much not trusting Cabanela as knowing damn well that he'll run with any thread he can. So, hide the gun from him and prepare to burn that bridge when it's too late to do anything. Better to hate him surely, gotta be the criminal here! Because Jowd logic.

So, not so much not trusting as trusting those skills enough to try and cut them short.

There need be no ulterior motive to stare at Cabanela's legs - case closed and that's that on that. They're the talk of the station, that lanky perpetual motion machine, that attention sink equivalent of a laser pointer for cats, look, there's even been talks, not implausibly fostered by Cabanela himself, of shooting a charity calendar with that one sole focus twelve months out of twelve, of COURSE he's staring at Cabanela's legs, godsdamnit, nothing strange about it.

It's when Jowd finds his gaze lingering on his best friend's thin lips, tracing a line with his finger in the air as if to caress them from afar, parting them perhaps, perhaps finding little resistance, that the top detective in the nation surrenders and declares himself guilty at last (he'll have to turn himself in to the Special Investigation Unit, he supposes).
