It Came From The Wastebasket #02: What Makes A Monoclonius?
The first fossil remains of Monoclonius crassus were discovered in the Late Cretaceous Judith River fossil beds (~75 million years old) in 1876 in Montana, USA. It was one of the many dinosaur species hurriedly named as part of the Bone Wars, and was described based on a mixture of bones from several different sites.
At first much of this dinosaur's anatomy was poorly understood, and at first it was misidentified as a hadrosaur. The skull remains were fragmentary and ceratopsians hadn't yet been identified as a group, so Monoclonius' horns weren't even recognized as being horns and a piece of the frill was initially misinterpreted as part of a breastbone.
Once the much better-preserved Triceratops was discovered in 1889, and the existence of ceratopsians was recognized, Monoclonius was re-examined and identified as a similar dinosaur – and three more species were quickly described within the genus, also based on very fragmentary fossils.
Tumblr media
Then for a while afterwards every ceratopsid fossil that wasn't clearly a Triceratops was then just dumped into Monoclonius, quickly turning the genus into a wastebasket full of dubious indistinct remains.
But then…
Tumblr media
Centrosaurus apertus was named in 1904, from the similarly-aged Dinosaur Park Formation in southern Alberta, Canada. It had originally been one of the various species of Monoclonius, but was now claimed to be different enough to deserve its own separate genus name – and this started a decades-long controversy between several paleontologists.
Over the new few decades arguments went back and forth over whether Centrosaurus was actually valid or if it was just a junior synonym of Monoclonius. As more and better ceratopsid fossil material was discovered several other Monoclonius species were eventually split off into their own separate genera, too, creating Styracosaurus, Chasmosaurus, and the somewhat dubious Brachyceratops. But other new species also continued to be lumped into Monoclonius up until 1990, meaning that over its century of existence this wastebasket taxon had at one point or another contained at least 16 different species.
During the 1990s opinion began to turn against Monoclonius, increasingly regarding it as a dubious name. Its original type specimen was a chimera of multiple different individuals (and possibly multiple different species), and it just didn't have any distinct enough anatomical features to distinguish it from other ceratopsids.
Centrosaurus, meanwhile, was further validated by the discovery of huge bonebeds containing thousands of individuals, making it into one of the best-known of all ceratopsians.
Today Monoclonius' name remains attached to a few fossil specimens, but only the ones that are too indistinct to classify as anything else. Some "Monoclonius" have also turned out to actually be juveniles and subadults of other ceratopsians – it seems many young centrosaurines had a Monoclonius-like stage in their growth, before they went on to develop their own species' distinctive horn and frill shapes.
So Monoclonius may never have been a distinct genus at all – it was just a bunch of different ceratopsian teenagers!

Hahahahahaha, look at this fucking gif I made hahahahahaha. When I say write for yourself, I mean it. I like dinosaurs. I like politics. I wrote a DINOSAUR POLITICAL FIC.
A darling hero beta'd this fic for me months after I finished it. I hadn't bothered asking anyone to help me proofread because I figured no one would want to and that no one would read it, and then people read it (blushes) and enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed it, and I felt bad for making people read all my typos.
So here is my dino love story, typo free. Here is what I am proud of about this story:
It's the only fic on AO3 with the tag "Stuckysaurus"
It's the only fic on AO3 with the tag "Trilobites have a key part in the plot"
Chapter 11 (Bucky and Sarah's Big Day Out) is perfect to me and I wouldn't change a single word.
It has two optional endings in honor of my favorite childhood movie, Clue, because I was a VERY WEIRD CHILD.
It includes discussion of ocean acidification and algae blooms due to agricultural runoff.
This fic has around 20 sex scenes (including inferred sex scenes) and the most common descriptor it gets is adorable and wholesome. That's me, with the adorable, wholesome smut.
I am actually planning on writing a prequel to this story as part of my Marvel Trumps Hate Auction and I'm QUITE excited about it. It will be a political campaign story featuring Steve Rogers and Valkyrie and they are going to punch neo-nazis and make out in alleys while running Peggy Carter's Senate Campaign. I like what I like.
Monoclonius by Zenaidamacrouras1
Summary:
Steve Rogers is a single dad / environmental lobbyist with a v cute kid who loves dinosaurs and OMG---> who is that v adorable paleontologist with the ocean blue eyes and flowing dark mane of beautiful hairs, Y'ALL!
Will they ever smooch? (They will probably smooch).

Hey! I wasn't sure who to ask this but was hoping you might know of a particular Stucky fic? I don't remember much about it but Bucky worked at the Museum of Maths and was like super nerdy about it. I couldn't find it anywhere!!
Hi! I will admit I’ve never read a fic where Bucky works at the museum of maths (I’ve never heard of it, to be honest), and I can’t find any stucky fics that have the museum of maths as a location or tag. Are you able to give me any more details?
Or maybe someone else out there has heard of it? @zenaidamacrouras1 this could possibly be something you’ve come across? I actually thought of Monoclonius for Bucky being an enthusiastic nerd working in a museum 🤷‍♀️

AND NOW FOR COPE
Tumblr media
Edward Drinker Cope was an American paleontologist, zoologist, and comparative anatomist in a heated rivalry with Othniel Charles Marsh (more on that at a later time). He was born to a wealthy Quaker family. His father wanted him to be a gentleman farmer but he always dreamed of being a scientist.
Tumblr media
He actually had very little formal training and his scientific pursuits nearly bankrupted him.
Tumblr media
He wrote 1.400 papers and named over 1,000 vertebrate species though his rivals debated the accuracy. In fact, many of his fossil finds were synonymized with Marsh's or other's finds. C'est la vie.
Cope's body was donated to science on the occasion of his death. Okay, his head and brain were donated to science. His skull is actually the "type specimen" of homo sapiens. The guy was so full of himself that he intended to have his brain compared to Marsh's to prove he was the smarter one. Marsh thought the whole thing was stupid though and had a nice, peaceful burial of all his body parts. It's a good thing Cope died first because that would have really riled him up.
Tumblr media
To finish out, here are some of the prehistoric animals Cope named that you guys might be familiar with:
Amphicoelias
Tumblr media
Archosauria (crocs, pterosaurs, non-avian dinosaurs, birds)
Tumblr media
Camarasaurus
Tumblr media
Champsosaurus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dimetrodon
Tumblr media
Diplocaulus
Tumblr media
Dystrophaeus
Tumblr media
Edaphosaurus
Tumblr media
Elasmosaurus
Tumblr media
Eryops
Tumblr media
Hadrosauridae
Tumblr media
Lystrosaurus
Tumblr media
and Monoclonius.
Tumblr media
Like Marsh, some dinosaurs had been named after him. Unlike Marsh, those dinosaurs have all since been synonymized with other animals. For example, Drinker became Dryosaurus. Since he is dead though, I think he can Cope with these changes.

Agathaumas, the Lost Ceratopsian
Tumblr media
I've talked about The Lost World (1925) a few times on this blog, partly due to it being the very first feature length film depicting dinosaurs, and partly due to how effective it is as a snapshot of dinosaurs during the early 1900s.
Anyone who has seen the film will note that there are actually two species of ceratopsians portrayed. The first is the more famous Triceratops, as seen in the photo above on the left.
The one on the right resembles a Triceratops, but looks a little...different. The nasal horn is a lot longer, the frill exhibiting more spikes, and it's hide more heavily armoured.
As you might've guessed, this isn't Triceratops. In fact...it's a dinosaur that may not have even existed.
Meet Agathaumas sylvestris ("marvelous forest-dweller"), one of the oldest described ceratopsians ever recorded. In fact, it was "discovered" before ceratopsians were even properly described.
youtube
Tumblr media
The original partial remains (AMNH 4000) were discovered in 1873 by Fielding Bradford Meek and Henry Martyn Bannister near Black Butte and Bitter Creek in Wyoming. They were eventually sent to the famous paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope who initially described it as a hadrosaur due to how fragmentary the fossils were. It wasn't until his rival Othniel Marsh described Triceratops did Cope recognize it as a ceratopsian in 1889.
And here's where things get...interesting.
Tumblr media
As anybody interested in paleontological topics should know, Cope and Marsh were locked in a fierce rivalry called the Bone Wars, where the two competed to find the most specimens and describe the most species. In a series of publications ("The horned dinosauria of the Laramie" from the American Naturalist) Cope initially didn't recognize the name "ceratopsid" as a proper family name (believing that the namesake Ceratops wasn't related), and even argued for his own classification: Agathaumids. Furthermore, he grouped 4 other of his discoveries together in this family: Monoclonius, Dysganus, Manospondylus, and Claorhynchus.
Despite his efforts, Cope's gambit ultimately failed when in 1907, Agathaumas's validity was challenged by John Bell Hatcher. Due to the fragmentary nature of the fossils, it was later reclassified as a pseudonym for Monoclonius. This isn't anything unique for species described in the Bone Wars due to the rush to name new animals. And to rub salt in the wound, all of the members of the Agathaumids were considered to be nomen dubium (doubtful name) while Marsh's name Ceratopsids was chosen as the classification for the group (The Ceratopsia).
Tumblr media
Armor for Agathaumas – Incertae Sedis (wordpress.com)
So where does that leave Agathaumas and the original remains? Nowadays, while the remains are still considered a holotype, it's widely considered to be a centrosaur. The painting by Charles R. Knight as seen from above came from the species Agathaumas sphenocerus, later reclassified as a species of Monoclonius, which is now believed to have been described from specimens of Styracosaurus and Centrosaurus. The reconstruction would later be used for the animal's depiction in the 1925 The Lost World. The genus as a whole is now typically regarded as synonym for Marsh's dinosaur, Triceratops (in a bit of irony).
So while now considered nomen dubium, Agathaumas is still rather interesting due to how a once notable dinosaur fell victim to science marching on, and how it got caught in the center of a notorious rivalry.
A big thanks to the I Know Dino podcast for covering this. Feel free to check them out cause they have a lot of good material for dinosaur enthusiasts. Also feel free to check out any of the articles cited in the post if you want some additional reading, and this great video by E.D.G.E from YouTube.

Hey Zenaida, I just have a really random fic ask for you. What is the orthodontic state of each of your characters???
Tumblr media
Hahahahahahagahagga. Dead.
You don't really want to know but the thing is I'm going to punish you for this cheekiness by answering you!
Now our X factor is that Chris Evans had some serious braces at a young age, which I confirmed by googling one minute ago, but he has that vibe anyway. Like you can just tell that he had jacked up teeth when he was like 8 and it was ridiculously cute and then he had his teeth perfectly straight by puberty when suddenly you want your teeth to be perfectly straight. His smile is just so wide! He loves his teeth!
But of course Movie Steve has Chris Evans' teeth post braces. Which is inaccurate, fight me MCU, I'll die on this hill.
For the sake of my AUs I will assume Steve was naturally gifted with a mouth full of teeth as charmingly troublesome and full of personality as he is. I think in most modern settings he would have had some level of orthodonture for actual non-cosmetic reasons. If his mom is a nurse it's reasonable it was within range of the budget.
The variable is how old he was when he got that movie star smile. Did Steve go through junior high with imperfect teeth? High school? College? It's a subtle thing.
List of fics:
Backhoe: Bucky: Oh he has that snaggletooth. It's hot as fuck. Steve: braces in college, used his student loans/inheritance to pay for them, lotsa shame about the crooked teeth situation in high school.
Unpredictable synchronicity: Bucky: braces. In fact, I mention the braces in the fic. Steve: is Captain America and should have had charmingly crooked teeth and then Shield made him get them fixed post ice. Would the serum allow that? We'll say sure.
Lucky screwdriver: Bucky: braces. Steve: braces starting at like age 9
Pursued by bear: b: braces, s: early braces
Cruel summer: snaggle, early braces
Take me anywhere: snaggle (and he's on stage as a dancer but he's into his snaggle), late braces
Climb of passion: snaggle, late braces
Monoclonius: braces, early braces
Tension and tonic: Bucky: very much braces with a lot of shame about it, Steve: I actually do not know.
Plastered: Bucky: imma say braces but I don't feel as solid about that. Steve: early braces
