For the past two days I've been playing with the zygomatic process. It gives some drama to a drawing. And I've always thought it had the coolest name in all of human anatomy.

This morning as I lay with my wife she thought I was massaging her head. And I was. But I was also appreciating her zygomatic process.

Every culture has it’s good and bad parts. In Korean culture jeong 정 (a kind of the warm feelings arising one’s relationship with another person) is a beautiful one. But it also has its bad parts, the sharp teeth and claws of misogyny and machismo (similar in many cultures). I was inspired by old Minhwa folk paintings of tigers that look a little weird but are endearing at the same time. Will you embrace your culture? Sharp teeth, wonky eyes, and all?

The Magpie and the Tiger is one common theme of Minhwa paintings (the magpie is a tattoo on her). The tiger has some gold paint worked in so it’s iridescent.

TW mental illness

I share my diagnosis with Van Gogh, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Florence Nightingale, and Virginia Woolf, among others. It is a diagnosis correlated with artistic prowess and significant levels of empathy and resilience. Studies suggest it can even be associated with a higher IQ. My life, starting in childhood, is marred by the negatives of this disorder. I am not crazy, weak, or dangerous, despite what society wants you to believe. A disease of the brain is no different than one of the body; an imbalance of chemicals is something I did not choose or fabricate. Positives have come from this: staring death in the eyes led to me pursue a career in which I could lead others to safety, help them find their worth, and feel empowered to live meaningful lives. I am a dreamer, an artist, a lover of all creatures. I have an acuity with feelings within myself and others. Resiliency through trauma and stress is a strength of mine. Learn before you judge, think before you speak, and above all else, be kind because not all scars are visible.
