Felicia Chiao's "Strange Pain."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Currently on view at Harman Projects in New York City until January 7th, 2023 is artist Felicia Chiao's solo exhibition, "Strange Pain."
Taking the familiar and skewing it in surreal ways, Felicia Chiao illustrates painful human emotion by creating visual representations of feelings that can usually only be experienced. Whether it be a room with no windows or the dark bulbous personification of inner struggle, the "Strange Pain" referenced throughout the exhibition is evident.
Chiao's autobiographical work chooses to focus on vulnerable aspects of what it means to be human. She creates worlds in which our fear, anxiety and depression appear as physical as they feel. Given this new physical form, they are illustrated as amorphous blobs sitting on our laps pinning us down under the weight of depression, as smothering anxiety looming around the next corner, and as a pit in our stomach when we can not find the motivation to be productive as seen in Lamp Light, pictured above.
Loneliness persists throughout this body of work, the artist uses singular lights shone on her figures during night scenes and shadows cast during day scenes to essentially isolate them from the rest of their world. Others are seen gazing through their window at an outside world that has become foreign to them, or struggling to find the will to eat breakfast, these solitary beings find themselves alone with their thoughts.
Felicia Chiao states, "Strange Pain is about the small, undefinable pains you sometimes feel when nothing is specifically wrong. It can come as that ache you feel from a sad song or that fleeting wave of despair that comes over you while waiting for water to boil. It can be the tightness in your chest before a social event or that vague sense of guilt you sometimes get, even though you’ve done nothing wrong. Strange pains are hard to put into words but this body of work does its best to explore them."
Despite the ever present feelings of despair, there are also beautiful moments that shine through and offer an optimistic outlook. A tree rising out of a building toward the sun, lushly blooming flowers, and refrigerator magnets reminding the viewer that "Its ok".

Paintings for the 2024 Grumpy Bert/Harman Projects Red Envelope show celebrating the Year of the Dragon. Artists painted on the ubiquitous red envelopes that the Chinese fill with money and give out as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. "Yangban Dragon" is inspired by a nobleman portrait I saw at the National Gallery in Seoul. 3.5x6.5" acylic painting on red Chinese new year paper envelope. If you didn't know, Koreans also celebrate lunar new year. The gallery asked a few artists to also paint big 18x36" paintings, so I painted mine in acrylic on wood panel. Dragons are associated with agriculture and rain and the show has a red theme so it seemed natural to paint the Korean heirloom peppers I grow on our roof every year. Show runs from Feb 10-24th, 2024 https://www.harmanprojects.com/exhibitions/65-red-envelope-show-2024/

My next show is about music and time travel. It's called AM Gold. It opens April 8th at Harman Projects in New York.
Generally speaking, I make paintings about the future, but I've lately found myself looking more backward than forward. Maybe I'm getting older (I'm definitely getting older). Or maybe it's because the last three years have been, to put it as eloquently as I can, massively f*cked up. But I've been time traveling lately. Revisiting old haunts, old friends, old paintings, and old music.
As part of this process of remembering my past, I recreated some long lost playlists from the course of my  life. The top 40 stuff I used to tape off the radio when I was in 6th grade. Hipster blog music from the mid 2000's. Semi-forgotten indie rock from the 90's. 70's soft rock. 90's hip hop which samples 70's soft rock. Brit pop from that time when I thought I wanted to move to London.
As much as anything else, these songs define my life. They're the soundtrack to everything I've ever done. And although I began this journey making playlists to help me document my own personal story, I realize that the songs themselves are as much the subject matter as the memories they inspire.
And so I made a show about music and time travel. I was inspired by the kind of physical artifacts we mostly don't have, don't need, or don't care about anymore: Album covers, CD's, posters, cassette tapes, stereo equipment (with actual knobs), band flyers, zines, photos cut and pasted from magazines, mix tapes shared amongst friends, passed down from cooler older siblings, or made to impress crushes. Of course we now live in a streaming era, and I wouldn't have been able to circle back and find the music which tells the story of my life without it. And so, accompanying this show will be a selection of playlists which I'll post on Spotify. It's an extremely personal list. It's not the best music of the last handful of decades. It runs through a number of incongruous genres. It's definitely not cool. In other words, it's me. AM Gold: the songs from my past, in the present.

Well. There was once a time I would have said it was impossible to waste another well-known actor who's on a show for a year and playing a really interesting character with an implied tragic backstory more than Holby did with Paul McGann as John Gaskell.
I take it back. Congratulations, Casualty has wasted Nigel Harman as Max Cristie more than Holby wasted Paul McGann as John. At least John Gaskell's exit was sad in a well-done-story way and had been built up to. This was sad in an infuriating way and has come out of nowhere.
I don't believe this is in character for Max at all. This is just horrible and cold, him walking out on Jodie again like this. Even if he believes she's better off without him, which is the kindest to Max interpretation of his behaviour I can think of... how can he believe walking out while she's still recovering is what's best for either of them?
Look. Max Cristie is not and never has been a good man. He's a volatile, selfdestructive, emotionally dysregulated mess with anger issues who makes other people's lives worse as well as his because he has a terrible sense of judgement about what he should or shouldn't do. He runs away when things get tough and is frightened of emotional intimacy. He has also been a terrible dad to Jodie.
But he was trying to get somewhere with her and cared about her in some sort of messed-up repressed way. Maybe not enough, maybe not the way he should have done, but in some way. And I don't believe he could have done this if he cared about Jodie in any way.
As I say, Max running away when things get hard is something we've seen in him before. More metaphorically than Henrik - who I always think to compare him to because I think they're very alike in personality - perhaps, and more metaphorically than he did tonight, but it's not unheard of. But this was just terribly handled.
This would have been cold and hard to believe coming from Henrik. From Max, it makes no sense at all.
It might've done something if we'd heard anything about him wanting to work elsewhere before. Even a few lines, from Dylan maybe - "Max, you never could settle down for long" or something like that - would have done a lot to establish that he can't be expected to stay. Similarly, maybe if Max's backstory had been explained at any point - instead of vague implications of some sort of traumatic or difficult past that are never explained - this might be more believable. It's not forgivable, but it could have been written in such a way as to be understandable. As it is? I can't even say it's that.
I mean, seriously, Max gets three scenes in his last ep? Three scenes and that's it? All because about 90% of the time was going to Faith and Iain drama that I do not care about. Argh. I already felt unwell with a headache today, I didn't need this too.
There's definitely not going to be any aftermath for Jodie either, is there? She should be devastated by this, realistically. She should really struggle to trust others after this. But I don't think any of that will happen. We'll be lucky if we get one scene of her saying she's sad about it after this week.
The Faith and Iain stuff just really upsets me. The way Faith behaves towards and about Natalia is awful to see and I'm tired of the show pretending Faith isn't abusive. And now Iain's being awful too. Natalia is a grown woman - a young one, yes, but a grown woman nonetheless (she's, what, 19-ish? 18 at the youngest) - and yet they talk down to her and patronise her constantly. She's struggling, and they're just seeing her as a "problem" to put up with. I can't stand it. Obviously her behaviour towards Iain was also out of line, but it's understandable why she's misreading him and I don't think the way he's reacting will do anything good for her. Though tbf he did already try to let her down gently, I suppose. Also, I relate to Nat a lot so I can't be 100% sure I'm coherent on this. I might be projecting too much.
It was nice for Jacob to get screentime, but he can't bond with Siobhan soon enough - I'm tired of him being Iain's life advice counsellor.
There were some great patient storylines tonight. It was nice to see Dylan in Dylan Disability Advocacy Keogh mode again, and I thought the story with Charlie's patients was handled very sensitively.
I'm so glad Charlie apologised to Stevie. She deserved it, and it was a lovely scene. For once, I agree with Charlie - Stevie is great and I hope to see her back soon.
Next week, we get Zoe Hanna back! Yay!

Scott Listfield's "AM Gold."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opening on Saturday, April 8th, 2023 at Harman Projects in New York City is artist Scott Listfield's truly amazing solo exhibition, "AM Gold."
Listfield's latest art exhibition, "AM Gold," beautifully intertwines music and memories, capturing the essence of various life stages. The 24 evocative paintings showcased in this collection are not merely representations of his all-time favorite songs or bands; instead, they bring to life the music that triggers the most vivid recollections for him. These poignant memories include listening to the radio in a friend's mom's wood-paneled car, traversing New York City with a walkman in hand, and embarking on an Australian adventure with the Wu-Tang Clan as his sole musical companion.
With a touch of nostalgia for physical media, such as album covers, mixtapes, and more, Listfield has curated accompanying Spotify playlists to enhance the "AM Gold" experience. These playlists provide a deeply personal insight into the artist's musical journey, weaving together songs from his past to create a compelling narrative for today's audience.

Painting for Harman Project’s Moleskine group show at The Mesa Arts Museum in Arizona. Sept 9 - Dec 4, 2022
“Wonky Eyes And All” 8.25” x 10.25"; framed: 12.75" x 14.75", Acrylic and ink on Moleskine paper 2022
Every culture has it’s good and bad parts. In Korean culture jeong 정 (a kind of the warm feelings arising one’s relationship with another person) is a beautiful one. But it also has its bad parts, the sharp teeth and claws of misogyny and machismo (similar in many cultures). I was inspired by old Minhwa folk paintings of tigers that look a little weird but are endearing at the same time. Will you embrace your culture? Sharp teeth, wonky eyes, and all?
The Magpie and the Tiger is one common theme of Minhwa paintings (the magpie is a tattoo on her). The tiger has some gold paint worked in so it’s iridescent.

Miami! I’ve got two new paintings at CONTEXT Art Fair which opens today, somehow. This first one I’m showing with my old pals at Harman Projects. If you’re down in Miami for the art fairs this week, keep your eye peeled for it. Sadly I couldn’t make it down there in person this year, as I’m in my studio working on some new stuff. But I’ll be thinking of you all having fun and cavorting and whatnot. Take some pics for me! (just keep it SFW 😬).

caden!! saw you mentioned both jane bennett and derrida in a recent post — have you read sharon krause’s political respect for nature? it’s kind of a counter to bennett’s vibrant matter, at least in my mind, and it invokes the classic derrida cat anecdote as part of the framing which i find really interesting. personally i think i find her eco arg more convincing than bennett’s new materialist one because i like how krause acknowledges how irrelevant the human value system is outside of humanity (how, like, we can’t possibly judge nature thru human values; it has values of its own we can’t possibly hope to understand) and uses that to argue for policy initiatives that similarly ensure nature’s autonomy whereas bennett’s arg of expanding the human value system to include nature within it (because of the internet ‘vibrance’ and aliveness in everything both humans and nature) is beautiful but imo kind of stops short of respecting matter on its own terms rather than bc of its connection to humanity. rambling but if you’ve read bennett’s vibrant matter and like derrida i def think krause’s political respect for nature is a worthwhile read!!! not like a Solution or perfect or anything but i really like thinking ab the human relationship w nature through the post-levinasian lens she dives into (the imperative that we stop viewing human understanding as a necessary prerequisite for respect being a big part of it). also just curious in general what ur thoughts are on bennett and/or new materialists more broadly? def don’t have to actually give a whole ass response or anything but i saw that post of urs and my ears perked up like a dog’s lmao. some like pavlovian response to political/phil theory sightings in the wild (read: my dash)
hiiiiiii casey! first off, i haven't read any krause—but thank you for the rec, she sounds interesting & i'll try to check her out :-)
re: the new materialists generally: ok, i have a lot of thoughts about them. first of all i am #1 kant hater because i don't go in for idealism OR dualism. so the underlying goal of the new materialists / speculative realists is highly appealing to me. however, (& i think this is sympatico with yr read of krause) i think their projects have a tendency to simultaneously project human values & ethics onto the natural world, & to flatten what i think actually IS an important distinction between human and non-human. i see this in barad, in bennett, in brassier, quite strongly in harman's object-oriented ontology. it's like, (& i'm paraphrasing projit mukharji) we still haven't gotten the hang of granting personhood to all actual humans, and already people are trying to break down the category...?
my fav of the bunch by far is meillassoux (altered my brain chemistry forever when i was 21). i would enthusiastically recommend him to literally anyone, even his weirder stuff (spectral dilemma and such). he's great to think with and i think he does the best job of any of this crowd at articulating the problem with kant and his transcendentalist 'copernican revolution.' however, i also see most clearly in meillassoux the root of the problem with the proffered new materialist solutions, which is that he takes the antinomy between perceived & real (ie, inside & outside) to be a transhistorical, universal condition of sensory experience, rather than a historically specific consequence of, eg, divided / estranged labour. so his solution relies on mathematisation à la badiou, which meillassoux also sees as an ahistorical and apolitical project, and although in 'after finitude' he makes a cursory attempt to link a critique of metaphysics with a critique of political authority, he's unable to develop this any further or with socio-historical specificity.
tl;dr new materialists fun sexy also fundamentally unable to engage with politics or history in a manner i find fruitful or liberatory. again though, really excellent to think with. love to rotate them.

Art and statement by Ravi Zupa:
"This piece is called “The “Words Cluster” and was recently part of my solo exhibition with Harman Projects @harmanprojects in NYC.
This piece is a Print Based Original.
…What are Print Based Originals? All of the images seen in PBO’s are from my original art… screen prints, relief prints and block prints of my drawings and paintings, torn, combined and reorganized to create new original pieces.
The process is largely inspired by the wonderful art of Robert Rauschenberg, Mimo Rotella, and Jaques Villeglé."
