Everyone knows not to frighten etho. Even if it'd be really funny, it's just not worth it. When Etho gets startled or jumpscared or frightened, he pops outta existence a little bit. He's a bit of a phantom, not the sky rats but like literally, he's a ghost.

He's not very good at being dead, not like Cleo who had full control of being a zombie or Joe who has.....some control of the jopacity...jhostlyness or whatever it is that they've got going on. Etho sucks at it, and whenever he gets startled he pops out of sight. Fully invisible, completely intangible. And he can't control it at all! He just has to wait until his nervous system reorient itself.

Poor Joel doesn't know this. Double life stabilized everyone's wonkyness for the sake of the games. So scar didn't get birdbrain'd, Jimmy didn't get hypothermia (cause despite popular belief, most netherborn are quite cold blooded to cope with the hot environment), martyn didn't have a sudden urge for human meat, and Joel didn't become a phantom. Etho was also unable to disappear which was painful but otherwise nice.

So one day Joel gets the bright idea to sneak up on Etho and scare him shitless, because it's funny and Joel shows affection via pranks and annoyance. Poor Etho didn't know what hit him, one moment he's quietly pulling weeds in his garden, the next he's scared out of his mind and completely gone.

Luckily Etho had signs on hand so he can tell Joel how uncool that was and how annoying it's gonna be to wait to come back.

Joel, to his credit, does feel really bad and since Etho's unable to finish his gardening, Joel offers to do it for him. Which he does, which is hard work, so Etho offers him his spare room so he doesn't have to make the journey all the way back.

It's not that far but he gets really lonely when he's all ghostly and he wants company.

Joel doesn't take up too much of the bed. Etho's cold, without the warmth of the sun or his jacket he's freezing in his little purgatory. Joel wakes to a presence, something not quite there but heavy against his side. It's Etho, unsurprising, who's still cold and a little transparent but peaceful all cuddled up against him.

He rolls onto his side so he can pull Etho closer, allowing him to press his cold nose into the crook of his neck. He won't scare Etho anymore, he'll find another way to show his affection.

Really, it's disappointing that it actually distresses Etho, because it's the funniest reaction ever. Does Etho understand how much prank potential this has? How funny it is that he just poofs when he's scared? It's hilarious. The fact it feels terrible sucks.

What Joel found out surprisingly quickly is that Etho is a lot jumpier than he expects. Joel knocked on the door, for goodness sake! What else is he supposed to do?

So far, wrapping his arms around Etho and giving him a gentle kiss has worked best. Etho says the fact somebody is touching him helps. Hardly like Joel needs an excuse to get his hands on Etho more often, but he'll take it.

Ariana Griande is in fact, not Grian's drag persona. Well, she is, but she wasn't originally. Ariana was Grian's twin sister. No one knew she existed, not even her other siblings.

She died around the time Grian joined Hermitcraft. With him just moving to a new server and becoming a watcher, he never really had the time to deal with his grief. And so Grian became Griande, in Ariana's honour.

Which is why he was so surprised to see her, just sitting in the permit office. With Mumbo no less!

So Ariana and Grian became separate people again. They still love to mess with their boyfriends though, that will never change.

Grian still pretends to be Ariana just to see the look on Mumbo's face when he realises he's just said something incredibly suggestive to Grian thinking it was Ariana, and Ariana pretends she's him dressed as her so she can mess with Scar. Grian talks to him, leaves, Ariana comes back a few minutes later, and she has absolutely no idea what they were just talking about which annoys Scar. Grian doesn't know this is happening until Scar mentions it.

Grian guesses it's fair, after how much he's dressed up as Griande to mess with Mumbo! Doesn't mean he's going to let it go easily, though.

Mumbo and Scar are considering what they can do to get them both back. And if they should be getting anniversary gifts alongside 'my partners sibling' gifts.

Look the hermits know gem can survive some…frankly gruesome stuff due to her wither hybrid heritage snapped necks, explosions, and other forms of very brutal deaths but one thing they’ll never get used to is how accustomed she is too it. Like one minute there was a massive explosion and she’ll pop back up like nothing happened snapping her arm back in place. They know it’s magical in nature but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to understand every aspect of it. Doc himself has lost more sleep then he cares to admit on trying to figure it out. And when they visit Empires for a local festival they ask Fwhip what the deal is and turns out it’s a one in a trillion hybrid ability for wither hybrids like one day gem will die but until that specific day comes she’ll just revive herself…and now some of the hermits are fainting which makes Fwhip realize Gem hadn’t told em that…yeah she’s getting an earful later.

Rando anon with two ideas for theme for once!

Firstly, there's the fact she hasn't told her significant others this, when it's pretty important information, Gem! Secondly, the fact she didn't tell her brother that she'd not told her significant others yet.

Gem just didn't really think it was a big deal. It's just a regenerative ability, it's practically the same as Cleo! (It is not, Cleo would like to have on record.)

It solves at least part of the mystery of their Gem. Or, it at least gives them something to start looking into.

Grian is a watcher, meaning he's practically immortal. Scar, a cat/vex hybrid, doesn't have this 'blessing'. He doesn't think he'll ever get used to seeing Grian dead and then jump up like it's nothing, but thankfully, he doesn't need to. That doesn't happen much.

Until Grian crashes through Scar's window - because he's an avian, he can't see glass, and Scar only recently put the window in - and the railings on the stairs.

Scar was interrupted by a loud crash. When he got out of the kitchen, he saw Grian, bloody and bruised on the ground, glass stabbed into far too many places to count and his new window smashed.

Grian stood up, slightly unsteady. His leg was bent at an unnatural angle and he was struggling to stand. Scar ran over to him and passed him a crutch, hoping he'd be alright himself with just one.

It feels a little ridiculous. The first thing Grian does is complain about all the blood he's just got across Scar's new build. He's resetting the bones in his arm, and he's whining.

Which is how they both end up delirious with laughter on Scar's floor, ignoring the blood in the carpet and their clothes. The single crutches, it turns out, were not enough to keep up two grown men who were keeling over with laughter.

It creates a much nicer memory for Scar, instead of the image of Grian's body. He just remembers how they sat on the floor laughing instead.

(The blood was a nightmare to clean up, though.)

(Cleo x Etho, Back from the dead)

Etho knew Cleo was a survivor, but this was NOT on his 20XX bingo card. How on overworld did she manage to crawl out of her grave? They had sealed her in deepslate!

Cleo herself doesn’t feel very different. They’re a bit miffed about being buried, and their hatred of deepslate has grown exponentially, but other than that they’re fine. She’s reunited with her husband, and that’s all that matters.

It was nice in a way, hearing Etho mourn her. It meant they were getting closer to the surface.

Cleo just wishes people would stop acting so weird about it. Like, jeez, she only crawled out of her grave? No need to make a big deal out of it.

Etho is exempt from this. She will take every touch of his, or crushing hug, or kiss, gladly. And he can't say she doesn't love him. She loves him enough to come back from the dead, what could be more romantic than that?

Hypno is a necromancer, so he is pretty used to being around dead things. Soul manipulation and extraction are a normal part of his job, stitching cadavers together is a no-brainer. He even mastered the dark art of bringing people back from the dead, but… it also means failure weighs heavier on him than on most people.

When XB gets into an accident involving some odd eldritch creature that leaves him bleeding out in the forest, Hypno almost doesn’t reach him in time.

XB awakes to find his partner unconscious on his chest, clutching various magical trinkets and utterly exhausted.

Hypno does not know how much of his own soul he has left, but he at least collapsed knowing he saved the person who matters to him the most.

If Hypno were to be truthful, he couldn't think of a better person to share his soul with. He's given parts of himself away for much less before, he thinks it's fair to finally do it for himself.

This is not the part he says aloud.

When he wakes, it's in warm bed. There's a fire burning in the fireplace, and the crackling provides a pleasant distraction from his thoughts. xB presents Hypno with a bowl of tomato soup, the scent strong with herbs.

xB scolds Hypno for being so reckless with his magic. Hypno scolds xB for being so reckless with his life. They laugh together, and xB climbs under the blankets beside Hypno before flopping into his pillows.

And it doesn't need to be said aloud. Because both of them know it anyway.

ok so uhh hear me out... SHADOWROT for the apocalypse theme !! sorry if this seems kinda demanding lol, first time sending an ask to you,

Lizzie and Cleo died in each others arms. It sounds very dramatic, but really, it sucked. The world ended, just like that. There was no escaping it, no fighting. They died. But at least they died together.

They revived together, too.

Not unchanged, but not... Not different either. Everything important was still there. The softness of their skin, their laughter, the love they hold for each other.

They have no idea what the future holds, but they can face it with each other. From one life to another.

When the Life Games end, some hermits that died can suffer with coming back to living after being dead for a prolonged period of time; some getting so severe that physical effects start to show (lack of/no response to injury; sometimes not even realising they've been hurt, tired/drained appearance, vacant gaze)

Cleo, someone who's been through that when she came back, helps with coping when the effects become too intense to get over without therapy

She's written a guide for it at this point (well, Joe wrote most of it. She didn't ask him to, he just took over once he found out what she was doing.) But she finds it still helps to look after them herself. Something about physical contact, being with another person, it helps. She assumes it's grounding. She knows she needed a lot of that, when she came back.

And looking after their hermits, and the others from those servers, is never a chore for them. It's nice their experience can help, for once.

something something doc resurrecting the homeland of the perimeter people and then leaving with the other hermits and watching his people come back there

It was a way to reconnect with his culture, but he never expected to rebuild it - to see what was once a barren space fill with life once more.

The hermits did ask if he wanted to stay behind, but Doc doesn't need to. He has a family, a community of his own. There's nothing he'd give them up for, and this culture deserves to make its own path now.

Gem and Pearl have definitely done their fair share of trashing their older brother's love interests, but they really weren't expecting a half-zombie. How do you even do that?!

Apparently his mother is a zombie, turned before he was born. It doesn't make sense, but if that's what he says he is, he's a half-zombie. And Grian's happy with him, so that's a good thing.

And this Scar guy doesn't seem too bad, if they really had to think about it. They're warming up to him.

Scar is incredibly charming, and only slightly smells of death. The charm makes up for that, at least. His whole existence seems like a fluke and Scar is making the most out of it. His mother thought she couldn't have a child, so was delighted to have Scar. It's something Scar's very proud of.

Most important for Gem and Pearl is that he makes Grian happy. Grian could date a full zombie (arguably less weird) and they'd support his happiness.

He also brings out the worst in Grian, but in the next kind of way. But Gem and Pearl are prank-proofing their bases...

"do I have a boyfriend or a girlfriend today?" Mumbo asked, in the morning, to Grian.

He wasn't expecting her to burst out crying, he'd just asked a question-

He doesn't know how supportive he's being of his gender fluid partner by just asking these questions

Grian really didn't expect it! They've spent a few nights together, but usually Mumbo avoided gendered terms until Grian got dressed (sweet in itself.)

But for Mumbo to ask, in his sleepy, half-awake voice. Hair not even brushed yet. That it's so important to Mumbo that he's asked Grian about it before he's woken up fully...

Grian loves him so much. She's so lucky. She makes sure he knows she's crying because of that. Because of how much she loves him.
