Chamomile Tea

You felt more tired than usual when you opened your eyes one morning, despite the fact that you had gotten a full night’s sleep the day before. But once you sat up in bed and felt a tickle in your throat, you knew that you must have caught some kind of cold, and you sighed, moments before a coughing fit wracked your body. You were sure that Sam could hear you through the wall, as your room was next to his, and you hoped that you didn’t wake him.

Because of the coughing, your throat hurt and your head started to painfully throb. It was like having a bad hangover, but without the fun memories of the previous night to balance out the pain, and you hated it. You should have known that you would get sick eventually, as lately more and more people around you have been falling victim to some unknown ailment, likely a variation of the common cold. You would think that superheroes didn’t get sick, but sadly, the last few weeks had proved that wasn’t the case.

The sound of someone knocking on your door pulled you back to the present, and you coughed once more before speaking. “Who is it?” You recoiled slightly as you heard yourself speak, with a voice that was scratchy and hoarse, and you weren’t even sure the person on the other side of the door had heard you.

“It’s me.” A smiled crossed your face when you heard Natasha’s voice, and quickly croaked out an okay for her to enter. She took one look at you, and her face immediately changed. “Are you alright?”

You nodded, even though you felt far from okay at this point. “I think I caught whatever’s been making its way around the compound,” you said quietly.

Your girlfriend nodded solemnly, and you could see the worry on her face. “You need to rest,” she said. “I’ll get you some water and some breakfast.”

You shook your head. “You don’t have to-” you started to say, but another coughing fit stopped your sentence before you had finished it.

“Y/N,” Natasha said with her eyebrows raised. “You’re obviously not feeling well, let me take care of you for a little while.”

“Once I get up I should be okay, and-”

“Y/N.” Her voice was firm and unwavering as she looked at you. You recognized that look: it was the same one she had worn when Tony had spent a week holed up in his lab and the entire team had gone down there to try and convince him to get some rest. “Just stay here, okay? I’ll be right back.”

You nodded, partially because you weren’t sure if you had the strength to get out of bed right now. Your entire body felt like it was made of jell-o, your limbs somehow feeling both weightless and too heavy to move at the same time, and you were in no position to get up and continue your day as normal. Natasha knew that from the minute she had stepped in the door, because she had dealt with the same kind of cold last week, and you had taken care of her as she fought it. Now, it was her turn to take care of you.

You waited patiently for Natasha to return, and you almost nodded off right there. But the sound of the door opening once more pulled you away for your half-fallen slumber, and you saw your girlfriend standing in front of you holding a tray, and once you were sitting up a little better, she set up it over your legs. On it was a plate with some fresh fruit and a slice of the banana bread you had made the other day, all soft enough so that you didn’t further irritate your sore throat. “I’m just waiting for the kettle to finish heating up, and then I’ll have some tea for you, okay?”

You nodded, suddenly overcome with emotion. Where had you managed to find such a perfect girlfriend? She leaned down to place a soft kiss on your forehead before leaving the room again to fetch the tea.

“There’s some honey in it,” she said when she returned, placing the mug down on the table by your bed, this way it was out of the way of danger but still within your reach.

“What did I do to deserve you?” you asked softly, and she smiled.

“I think it’s you that I don’t deserve,” was her response. “With all that I’ve done in the past.”

You shook your head, reaching out to gently take her hand. “You are perfect, and I can’t ever imagine my life without you, I’m just trying to figure out how I got this lucky.”

You took the first sips of your tea as she just smiled in response, and you could see the beginning of a tear in her eyes, but you were just telling the truth. Natasha was truly the best thing that had ever happened to you, and this experience just proved it even more.

After you finished your breakfast, Natasha slipped under the covers next to you, and leaned her head on your shoulder. “What are you doing?” you asked. “You’re going to get sick again.”

“I don’t care,” was her response. “I just want to be near you.”

And as the two of you laid there, you knew that you didn’t want to be anywhere else, even if it meant dealing with this horrible cold.

🌈is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?

I remember that in the beginning I struggled a lot with action scenes. I much preferred other stuff. It has gotten better now, though. Occasionally, it's hard to write low stakes fluffy normal scenes unless I'm in the right mindset for it. Which is quite ironic since I love fluff... 😂

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

I think this goes to my Guild Wars fics. I didn't expect to get ANY reaction to them. Similarly, I didn't expect lots of people to read my Legend of Korra fics, which left me a bit disheartened for a while because the fics I was a lot more passionate about barely got kudos.

💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!
