Few queer Recess headcanons:

1) Spinelli and Mikey are both gay (obviously.)

2) when she's in her early '20s and going to a nearby lesbian bar for the first time, Spinelli is shocked to find Miss Grotke there.

3) 40 years earlier Miss Grotke had the same exact experience with Miss Finster

4) Speaking of Miss Finster, she took part in some of the early Pride marches. One time the administration caught wind that she was still there and called her into the principal's office. Luckily Mr. Prickley was passing by and totally bulshitted something about her doing him a favor and getting pictures of the march for a current events assignment he was giving his students. Mind you he had no idea she was a lesbian until then. Next Pride he was marching right alongside her.

5) She also volunteered caring for AIDS patients in a nearby hospital in the '80s

6) In 2023 TJ is a high school history teacher and he keeps a safe space sticker on his door because two of his best friend are gay and he wants kids like them to know they're always welcome in his classroom.

7) Miss Grotke married her longtime partner soon after Obergerfell v Hodges.

8) Miss Finster was a bridesmaid. Never one to settle down, her current squeeze was her plus one.

9) Mikey is currently a member of a local gay men's choir and a regular at a bear bar in town. He's married and he and his husband are fostering queer teenagers who've been kicked out of their homes.

What are the clothing styles of T.J. Detweiler and his friends?

They almost always wear the same iconic outfits:

T.J.: His white t-shirt, blue jeans, gray leather jacket, red sneakers, and red baseball cap. Simple yet cool.

Spinelli: Her big red t-shirt (I'm pretty sure it's an oversized t-shirt and not a dress, since she can't stand anything girly), orange and brown striped leggings, gray jacket, big gray combat boots that used to belong to her brother Vito, and orange ski cap. The whole ensemble screams "tough girl."

Vince: His off-white, blue-trimmed t-shirt, bright green "1" jersey, gray shorts, and black and white high-tops. As sporty as can be.

Gretchen: Her old-fashioned blue dress with its white sleeves and pink sash, pink socks, and saddle shoes. Outdated and nerdy-looking yet cute.

Mikey: His cream-colored t-shirt, brown pants, and gray "tennies." Ultra-simple and comfortable, as suits a free-spirited bohemian soul.

Gus: His tucked-in, button-down, gray-green collared t-shirt, camo gray pants, white socks, brown loafers, and wristwatch. Disciplined, militaristic, and nerdy, in keeping with his upbringing.

Yay, a Recess question! As I've probably mentioned in the past, this was one of my favorite childhood cartoons.

For the answers, lets' look at what they wear.

T.J.: Red, like his baseball cap and sneakers. A bold, bright, vibrant color, just like his personality.

Spinelli: Red too. It's bold and fiery, just like she is, and it aligns her with her best friend and possible future boyfriend T.J.

Vince: Bright green, like his jersey. It's the color of his favorite place, a sports field.

Gretchen: Sky blue, like her dress. Its scientifically-proven calming effect creates just the right atmosphere for academic studies.

Gus: Army green. It reminds him of his dad, and the sense of strength and stability he provides.
