I finally bought the stupid notebook. Now, having had its way, my brain is willing to work with me again. Perhaps by month's end, I can have something done. 🙏🏻🕯
I've been stuck in my head these past few years, unsure what I want from myself. I'd stopped trusting in my vision, believing it had only gotten me more tangled up in the machinations of other people.
But it is difficult to produce art without a vision. So, tentatively, I'm searching again for it, hoping it has not grown feral under the overgrowth of thoughts in my head.

I love my Traveler’s Notebooks! I had a passport sized one for around a year but only used it properly the past few weeks. I loved it so much that I bought the standard sized one, as the passport size is a little small for my scribbles. The charms i got today are also really nice; they’ve handmade out of paper, from TortieAndTuxie on Etsy.

It seems much of the art i made growing up was fueled by intense desire and discomfort. Now that my life has become more secure, I no longer feel as strongly as before. Which has made it difficult to make art on any sort of imposed schedule.
I have since accepted this. I would rather sit through months or even years of a dry spell in order to experience bouts of maddening desire, than turn my creative outlet into a standardized production.
The most recent obsession is those leather journaling systems, specifically the Traveler's Factory brand. I've admired them for almost a decade, but always felt the necessity of constantly buying refills was stupid. But recently, I can't stop thinking about owning one. It got so bad that the other day, I went and bought some refills to convince myself I didn't want them.
I even bought them in a size I knew I'd hate!
And yet, still I have 15 tabs open looking at different covers for them. 🫣

Broke out my new Midori blank notebook (sketchbook?) to celebrate half of the M-EPIC crew getting back together! The new Delta Green game (tagged Helvetia, will be run by @theroyalzealot) I'll be a player in is set in the same universe as my M-EPIC campaign (and also the Melati/Grief Rice campaign I'm running right now).
Finan (my PC, glasses) will get a cameo through M-EPIC's appearance. Then I accidentally roped in North's (long hair) player, and then the handler asked me to ask Ian's (beard) player if he wanted to join, and he said yes. So that's pretty cool!
Tumblr media
Because I can, quick Midori notebook first thoughts, because I know these notebooks are a big deal in the travel journal/journal corner of the internet:
Heard they're good with fountain pens, and I was very excited for that! The top drawing was drawn with my fountain pen
The paper's smoothness works well with them, but the ink takes forever to dry/be absorbed by the page (hence the smears), which was a bummer as I'm also quite the messy artist lol
Fountain pen is the Pilot ones with the faces on the nibs btw (it was also skipping and I only had the mind to clean + fix it after the first drawing lol)
I also used a drawing pen (equivalent to the Sakura ones) and tombows (water-based ink). They worked perfectly with the paper. Especially the tombows! My gosh! They're so much smoother and blend better (despite my messy and quick flats lol)
True to the brand's word though, none of the inks bled on the page itself (no flowering) and none of them bled through the page as well
Unfortunately, you can see the shadows of your inks on the back side of the page and through the next page. The second one was pretty shocking since I've never had a sketchbook/notebook like that
But! At least they don't show up in scans. And that's really what matters to me since I picked up the habit of digitally archiving sketches
Can't wait to use this sketchbook more with inks (fountain pen, tombows, maybe dip pen cuz I think the paper can handle it!) without fear of ripping a hole through the thing or bleeding onto the previous page!

I really like the concept of the Traveler's Notebook by Midori but I refuse to pay 50€ for something I'm pretty sure I can DIY for less (which is exactly what I said last time I saw a cool journal and didn't want to pay money for it but then bought it anyway)

Note
what kind of planner/journal is it?? ive been looking for small traveller journals and your's looks so cool
It is a midori traveler's notebook passport size! The blue one off of Amazon
Tumblr media
I just spent like an hour customizing it :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The "charm" on the front is a holey stone i found at lake Michigan forever ago. I added the beads to the bookmarks (and i actually added the 2nd bookmark)
Tumblr media
I also added two more elastics so i could have 3 notebook inserts without used the rubber band method.
For inserts i have the traveler's company's free monthly planner, an off-brand craft folder, the pencil board from traverler's, the blank notebook that came with the cover, an off-brand plastic zipper pouch, and the traveler's notebook watercolor insert. :3
I got the pencil board, calendar, and water color insert off of the traveler's company website which was pretty cheap and the rest off of amazon

@randomtangle answering your reply in a post, because I have a lot of words to say about notebooks lmao.
So, quick answer first: I'm using a 2023 Hobonichi Weeks, which is a weekly planner. You can buy them from the Hobonichi website here, from Jetpens, or also Amazon.
I'm using the Weeks for a couple of reasons;
It's what Sean McCoy set up in the initial dungeon23 post!
I like the format of the notebook! The way that the weekly entries are one side, and a blank grid on the other is well suited to dungeon23 entries. The daily entries are also compact, meaning I focus more on getting something done rather than extraneous details.
I already liked Hobonichi as a brand, and the paper is very nice. The Weeks uses a super thin, but still fountain pen friendly kind of paper. I like to write with fountain pens (because they're fun) and the super thin paper keeps the notebook itself very compact. It is deceptively thin!
So for me, the Weeks ticks all the boxes! If you have the cash to burn on a fancy notebook, highly recommend them. That being said! The Weeks are a tad on the pricier size compared to similar planners (its a combo of the high quality, but also some of it is definitely branding).
If you're looking for something with a similar format to the Weeks, but you don't need the particular paper quality, searching for different weekly planners on amazon or etsy (or honestly just google Hobonichi Weeks dupes, or weeks planner)will turn up plenty of cheaper options.
Midori makes similarly formatted weekly planners, though they have cardstock covers and one planner doesn't cover a whole year (you'd need two). they're designed to work with their Traveler's Notebooks covers, but would work totally fine as just little notebooks! They also have very nice quality paper, and are in the same format as the Weeks (you'd want the standard size over the passport size, as a heads up).
The heart of dungeon23 is really just getting out there and writing! So you don't need a fancy notebook (I've seen people using all sorts and also going digital). But I do think a fancy notebook is fun. But I also like notebooks 😅

Techo Kaigi 2023
2023 is drawing to a close and the new planners are sitting in my drawer, calling to me in all their pristine loveliness. But before I talk about 2024, how did 2023 go?
Pretty well, actually.
I started 2023 with the following planners:
Daily personal journal: Hobonichi Cousin
Daily carry: Hobonichi Weeks Mega
Commonplace book: Hobonichi A5 notebook
Writing journal: Hobonichi A5 notebook
Health journal: Hobonichi Weeks
Work journal: Hobonichi A6 Techo
Overflow/bullet journal: Midori Codex A5
By the end of 2023 (actually, by about mid-2023) only two of those got switched out for something else and one got added. Which is pretty good. There are, however, a few other changes I am making next year. I’m going to go through each in detail.
Were these the right journals for me?
Actually, yes. Although there is some reconfiguring, the basic principles of the journals above is going to remain consistent. I need a place to write personal journal entries that stays at home and a place to track things and make notes on the go. I enjoy both writing and commonplacing. If I want to focus on my health, having a dedicated journal helps. And I keep a separate journal for work because it may contain information that shouldn’t really go outside of work. And then sometimes I overflow into another space because I want to deep dive on something that doesn’t really fit in the others. None of this is changing.
Daily Personal Journal
The 2023 Hobonichi Cousin is going to move into … the 2024 Hobonichi Cousin. This book works really well for me. The finder details of how I use it did evolve a bit over the year, but I think I’m happy with where I ended up. I did consider moving into the Avec as my Cousin is fairly chonky at this point, but I prefer to have the book in English. I will use this in mostly the same way as last year as well:
3 months to a page view: I have no idea what I will do with this next year, but I had no idea last year either.
Monthly pages: I write a daily highlight on each day.
Weekly pages: I currently use these for planning, but this will move to the daily carry. So I am expecting this to become a space for gratitude/manifestation.
Daily pages: personal daily journal entries.
Daily Carry + Bullet Journal
Although the Weeks was nice, I found I ended up feeling things got a bit lost in the weekly view. I pretty much only used it for key dates. I had a Midori Codex as a bullet journal (briefly) but it never worked well for me as I really don’t like Midori paper (a discovery from this year) and it wasn’t something I could carry around. So I tried a Traveller’s Notebook, and again, the paper (which is the same, so I should have realised this would happen) was not to my taste. I solved both by getting a 240 page Sterling Ink TN notebook. This has worked well.
For next year, I wanted to consolidate these into one book. Although the weeks and the TN are smaller dimensionally, carrying both is quite bulky! I decided to get a Sterling Ink Common Planner (2 part book) in A5. I expect it to be used as follows:
3 months to a page view: seriously, I never know what to do with these pages.
Monthly pages: key dates and events
Weekly pages: time based daily planning - what do I do when. This will double as time tracking.
Blank pages: bullet journal which for me acts as a place to work when I’m out and about, as well as an overflow journal. I expect to also use it to write consolidated to do lists.
Creativity + Commonplace Journal
Last year was the first time I kept a commonplace book and this really suits my way of working. I have just about filled it. I did add a separate journal for writing learning, a Weeks Sterling Ink, but this is too small really.
I need somewhere to plan my creative activities, and also to plan this website! Especially as I have a lot of pre-planned content for next year that will need some serious planning to fully prep. So this will be moving into a Sterling Ink Common Planner (2 part book) along with my commonplace book. I originally brought this journal for work, but that ended up being the wrong choice. However, it ends up working out just fine as a combined creativity planner and commonplace book.
3 months to a page view: index.
Monthly pages: website and social media posting schedule. I want to be able to look back and see what got planned and what got posted.
Weekly pages: day to day creative planning - writing, the website, reading, etc.
Blank pages: commonplace book and creative ideas.
Bonus journal: A5 Sterling Ink 520 page learning journal
I will keep the learning separate. It makes it easier for me to re-read it and finding all my notes is going to be increasingly important next year for the content I have planned here.
Writing Journal
The Hobonichi notebook worked well last year as the smoothness of the tomoe river paper makes it a joy to write in. I really need the low feedback paper to write without my hands hurting. But, this year I want to focus on a daily writing habit, so I wanted a daily journal. And I wanted to use the new A5 Hobonichi Hon, but was a bit worried about how it would bulk up as my daily journal. So my new writing journal is the Hobonichi Hon A5.
3 months to a page view: actual daily ‘wordcount’. I want to be able to see the patterns of writing I manage to complete.
Monthly pages: I wanted a place to do mini doodle/zentangle art every day. As I don’t really need the monthlies for anything writing wise, I am going to use this space for that.
Weekly pages: responses to prompts, ideas - anything I feel the need to capture. This won’t really be ‘weekly’.
Daily pages: writing
Bonus journal: A5 Sterling Ink 520 page worldbuilding project journal
As my days vary quite a lot, I know I might not actually write every day. But I can write the equivalent of every day. The idea is to try and keep up with the days and that is why I am also recording the actual daily pages written. I also have a worldbuilding project planned and this will be kept in its own journal. Its an alternative history world so I will need to do a lot of research and then ‘adjust’ reality.
Health Journal
The Hobonichi Weeks was perfect for this. I recorded calories and activity against each day and then used the back pages for planning food shops. I am going to switch to the Sterling Ink Common Planner Weeks Compact for 2024 only because I think the vertical weeklies will be better than the horizontal ones (if I’m wrong, I can always get a Hobonichi Weeks).
Work Journal
It turns out I hate A6. I also think having a weekly overview is better. As is being able to keep my notes in the same book. I changed to a an Undated Sterling Ink Common Planner and I plan to stick with that. I got the ‘half year’ size so I can carry it around more easily.
Is everything Sterling Ink or Hobonichi?
Pretty much. There are two reasons for this that I can now articulate pretty clearly:
Tomoe River paper. I love this paper. Fountain pen inks never feather, even the wetter ones. Its incredibly smooth, and reduces feedback, which in turn reduces pain in my hands.
The grid size. This is perfect for me.
There are other companies out there who can meet this need. I did consider the Wonderland planner for a work planner. I also looked at Aura Estelle and I may get an Undated from here when my current work journal runs out (it depends how many of the note pages I end up using).
That is a lot of journals!
Its only 8. Well, 9 because I expect to use another journal as a record of a big trip I am taking next year. I know it seems a lot, but with the exception of the Worldbuilding Project journal, all of these were things I used last year. And most were filled (or will be full either by the end of the month, or when they come to their natural end). That being said, no one should feel like they have to have this many journals. I started with one - a single bullet journal. I ended up filling it very quickly, which is when I started to have more than one. You have too many journals if:
They are the ‘right’ journal, but you can’t fill them/keep up with them.
Keeping up with them is causing you stress.
Other than this, the correct number of journals is the number that help you function day to day, in all areas of your life. That bring you joy when you use them. I would find trying to cram everything into one book and running out of space stressful. This is what works for me, and in 2024, I will be sticking with it.

Bunny Journal
I'm very late to the party, but I've just started a bullet journal (or BuJo, for those in the know, apparently.)
And obviously, my BuJo isn't a bullet journal -- it's a Bunny Journal! If you're not familiar with bullet journals, there's a whole methodology behind them: https://bulletjournal.com/. But basically it's a way of customizing a blank journal so that it works for however the user organizes their life.
I've done some basic pages, but there's still plenty to play with.
Also, I made a cover for it -- a la Midori traveler's notebook system thingamabob. I ripped the guts out of an old planner, covered it in fabric and edging, glued everything together, and tied on some elastic and a shoelace. Right now, it fits 2 notebooks, but I think it will be fine to add a third (I just need to buy more elastic). I love that I can attach a pen and pencil, but I have a feeling the weak glue will give out shortly.
Brownie points to whomever can figure out the piece of music!
Now the the trick will be continuing to use it...
(Also, Badhaai Do and A Room with a View are fantastic)

I love the allure of an empty notebook, brimming with limitless potential. However this one disappointed me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Embarrassingly, I possess an entire shelf filled with mostly unused notebooks. A few weeks ago, as I prepared for a trip, the thought of having a notebook with me crossed my mind. Given my habit of tracking my reading progress, I saw an opportunity to document my travel memories as well. I opted for one that was thin and flexible, fitting effortlessly into my tote bag without adding bulk. What caught my attention was its unique layout – the pages divided into quarters, urging me to write in a landscape mode rather than the usual portrait orientation.
I've held onto this particular notebook for around 5 years, which means to it being empty, which means I've moved with it accross the country TWICE. I picked it up at Daiso, so it likely set me back just $1.50. This felt like a steal, considering the remarkable quality of the paper. It felt like premium calligraphy paper that doesn't let ink seep through or feather, like a midori notebook, which, depending on the size, can range from $6 to $12. It definitely felt like a good find.
I found myself using it during the plane journey to my destination. However, I soon noticed an issue – the pages weren't securely bound within the notebook. They tore away far too easily. Each time I turned almost as if the notebook was designed to have "easy rip" pages, a feature that certainly didn't resonate with me. Some people might think it's a feature, but for me it was a hindrance.
Verdict: Regrettably, this notebook simply didn't fit my needs. While its disappointing performance doesn't annoy me, considering its likely $1.50 cost, I didn't foresee the necessity of checking for easily removable pages. Thankfully, this flaw revealed itself in time. I could recycle the detachable pages and dispose of the binding. The true financial loss, however, was the purchase of a replacement notebook while traveling, a decision I pondered, knowing a collection of perfectly usable ones awaited me at home.

Anyone who sees this and journals, come into my ask box or reblog this and tell me your favorite journal, I’ll start,
I really love the leuchtturm1917, their pocket notebooks are the perfect size to last me a month to two months, usually a month and a half. The a5 is too big, and it was taking me six months to fill one which isn’t something I normally enjoy.
But I also really like the Midori MD, I’ve had three a5 sized ones, and I kinda want to try a smaller size sometime.
I also really like this one brand of travelers notebook inserts, but they are only available on Amazon. I know that’s something some people are avoiding, but it’s very accessible for me/where I live and I don’t want to be made to feel guilty about that. But their paper feels like a slightly thicker version of the MD paper. I use both their standard tns and their pocket sized ones.
I like to keep my pocket notebooks in a chic sparrow tn cover, and I have a Ricco Bello travelers notebook cover.
