HAPPY BIRTHDAY to singer-songwriter Robin Zander, exemplary front man for the legendary Cheap Trick. I can’t imagine life without the first 3 Cheap Trick albums, and I said as much to Robin when I met him in 2011. At the time I was the touring bassist-vocalist with The Monkees. We were wrapping up a show in St. Petersburg, Florida. As I was unloading at our hotel, Robin Zander and his wife pulled up. I introduced myself and he asked if he and his wife could visit with everyone. We chatted and walked to the bar, where Micky Dolenz was waiting—he and Robin knew one another from prior gigs, and I was happy to be listen in on two of the great all-time rock’n’roll tenors talk shop.

Vocally, I always thought of Robin as a noir punk/New Wave update on great rock’n’roll frontmen, with the swagger of Mark Lindsay and the power and range of Roger Daltrey. Years ago I made a list of my Top 12 role models as vocalists, and Robin is on that list. For me, if anyone needs to study “how to front a band,” study Robin! There are obvious Cheap Trick clips I could post (check out their 2016 single “When I Wake Up Tomorrow”), but I’m zeroing in on Robin’s 1993 solo album. HB RZ and thank you for your light.

The Story of Us

Summary: She and Dean met when they were kids. Even at such a young age, she knew that he was her soulmate. Being the daughter of a hunter, Michaela (Micki) Singer knew the life he led came with a price, but she was up to the challenge.

A/N: This is a rewrite of a story my good friend @spnbaby-67 allowed me to take and rewrite. All mistakes are mine. This is canon divergent, meaning some things that happened in the show will still happen here but with my own twist to it.

Pairings: Dean Winchester/reader, Sam Winchester/friend!reader, John Winchester, Mary Winchester (mentioned only), Bobby Singer, and more from the Supernatural universe.

Warnings: Flashbacks are in italics, fluff, angst, smut, character death (mentioned only)

She owned a cabin in the middle of nowhere, but that’s how she liked it. Completely isolated, away from any form of existence. Michaela, or Micki to her friends and family, loved the peace and quietness it brought her when she visited the cabin; it was her sanity or, as she called it, her own sanctuary.

Ever since she could remember, she visited there when she was little with her parents, Bobby and Karen Singer. It was their vacation home, a chance to trade the life of work and stress for relaxation and rest. A time to enjoy each other and spend quality time with just the family.

It was not often they went, but she remembers plenty of summers there. When she was 15, she came to know the magic of the place; she'd found peace, independence, first loves and hardships that made her stronger.

After her mother passed away, Bobby never revisited their little slice of heaven, claiming it brought up too many memories. It came to a surprise to her at first, but she was very thankful he at least kept the land. It was something special she could hold onto, to feel closer to her mom. Even if it was for a day or two, she still felt her parents' happiness, strengths, and love. She had hoped one day she would be able to receive the same.

That's why when her life turned to sorrow and grief, the cabin was where she ran to; somewhere to be able to wallow in her misery while still reliving the joy this place brought

As Micki sat on the front porch, her eyes surveyed the lake. This time of the year it was calm, murky green in color, but with some hint of dark from the shadowing trees surrounding it. With it being early morning the fog spread across the open land, which left behind clouds of white frost that covered the trees and bushes. It looked ghostly, almost like they were being erased from eyesight, but she knew different. The vapor would soon dissipate when the sun reached its peak to start the day, bringing the trees and bushes back to life.

The lake itself was perfectly smooth and solid, tranquil to the mind’s eye, mirroring what was above like a Monet painting capturing every detail. It gave her the perfect backdrop to just stare endlessly, relaxing only to remember days gone by, before chores and other things that needed attention to.

Sitting there on the porch swing that was built by Dean a couple of years ago, she wrapped her hands around the warm cup, taking a sip of her coffee and remembering a time special to her, as the tears threatened to fall.

Hearing the screen door creak, she wiped the traitorous tears from her eyes.. She turned to the right to see Sam holding her three month old child.

“You ok?” He asked as he sat down next to her.

She nodded her head with a brief shake “I have to be, for her.” She smiled as she gestured at Maren, her daughter, her bright eyes looking at her mother.

“I know it’s tough. I miss him too," Sam said, wistfully. "But honestly, it doesn’t seem real he’s gone, you know?” he sighed looking ahead. “I mean especially when I see him everywhere.”

Like always, Sam held back his emotions. They were so similar in that way, she and her brother-in-law. That's probably why they got along so well, they were so much alike.

Trying to keep the mood from getting too depressing and dismal, she made a face at Maren to get her to smile. “I know what you mean," Micki sighed. "Last night I swear I felt his arms around me. It seemed so real, Sam.” She swallowed the lump forming in her throat , “For a second or so, I thought I heard him say I love you," she admitted.

Sam quickly smiled at her, then turned his attention to his niece. “Sam, we both miss him very much. I know it’s hard for you because it’s very hard for me. Maren won’t ever be able to meet him, but you can bet your bottom dollar she will know about him and what a good man Dean was when he was alive.”

“Damn straight she will! She will know exactly who her dad was.” he paused a moment to look down at the babe. "I will tell her every day how much he loved her and was looking forward to being her dad."

When he didn't get a response he looked over at Micki and noticed she was looking towards the entrance of the property. “Mick? What’s wrong?”

Micki heard Dean call her name at the same time her ears picked up a familiar rumble of an engine she’d recognize anywhere. Her heartbeat picked up as she stood up and walked to the rails to get a better view of who was driving. Whomever it was, was still too far away to see, but she knew deep down only one person drove ‘Baby.’

She had left the Impala at her father’s house because she couldn’t look at it every day and not see Dean. The day he died six months ago, played in her mind as the car got closer.

“Micki? Get in the house! Take Maren with you.” Sam demanded as he stood up behind her.

But she didn’t hear him, she was so fixated on the car that she had blocked him out.

“Michaela! Go now!” He finally grabbed her shoulder, turning her around and breaking her out of the trance. “Here.” He handed her her daughter who had started whimpering, feeling the change in their moods.

She took the baby from him but didn't move. “ Y-you don’t think it’s really him, do you?”

“I don’t know," Sam told her honestly. "But I’ll find out. Go inside and put Maren in the bassinet. Get the gun from behind the tv, and don’t come out until I know for sure it's safe.”

Still she didn't move, too stunned by the appearance of Dean's beloved car. “Go! Now!” Sam said, ushering her inside.

Micki put thr baby in the bassinet that was protected with all sorts of vigils, a devil's trap, and whatever else they had learned over time. She then did as Sam had instructed, getting the gun and standing before Maren’s crib protectively. Whatever or whoever it was, Michaela Singer was prepared to fight to save her daughter.

Outside Sam stood his ground on the porch, the Impala stopping right in front of him.

When she heard whoever it was kill the engine and the recognizable creaking sound of the doors opening, her heart began pounding faster.

She heard an all too familiar voice “Hiya Sammy!” right before darkness overtook her vision.

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Early Morning Blues & Greens” (live 2013) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v_Aud76QR8 This song was written by Diane Hildebrand and Jack Keller, who wrote several cuts in the early Monkees album catalogue. Keller was part of the Brill Building/Don Kirshner songwriting stable in league with Howard Greenfield and Neil Sedaka. Hildebrand was more of a free spirit. In 1969 she released her own "underground pop" album with this song as the masthead. She also wrote for other artists and TV shows and released music under the name Joya Diane Skye.

Peter Tork adopted this song, usually associated with Davy Jones as a "deep cut" from The Monkees's HEADQUARTERS album. On this performance, Peter sang lead and played a bluesy guitar at a Monkees Convention in New Jersey 3-2-13. I sang harmonies and played bass in a "Monkees House Band" (i.e. Monkees road band alumni) with (the late) David "Loafy" Alexander, Rich Dart, Aviva Maloney + guitarist Damian Fanelli sitting in. We backed Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork with a night of music.
