Chris Andrews SONG OF THE WEEK: “Funky Heaven” https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/funky-heaven —Some cosmic funk, with synthpop juice and fab guitars…”Funky Heaven” catches up with Bruno Mars and updates everything to love about the music in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. If this is your introduction to Chris Andrews, he’s a British singer-songwriter and recording artist whose songs have been covered by Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees). Chris (under the name Tim Andrews) was also a champion of late 60s psychedelic pop and (in the 80s), as Kris Ryder, he released New Wave synthpop sides. Chris was also part of the seminal freakbeat band Fleur de Lys. Meanwhile, enjoy his current projects:

STORY + SONG OF THE WEEK: “Keep Sharing the Crayons”— A passion piece inspired by observing fellowship amongst diverse people—“The Grand Company, No more missing harmony.” Everyone—black, white, brown, old, young, big, small—brings something to this big table called life, and it’s a gift to be handed even the tiniest role in God’s Kingdom called Earth. The line “And you know the difference, it won’t wash away…” was inspired by the sidewalk chalk art scene with Dick Van Dyke in the film “Mary Poppins.”
The music bed (mixed by Tim Breon) is influenced by the 80s synth-pop band New Musik, even though I went into a scruffier sound than what Tony Mansfield might’ve done. Dedicated to activists and protest sign-makers everywhere.

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Mud in Your Eye” by Les Fleur de Lys, the lively British rock band credited for inciting the “freakbeat” sound—a mash-up of psychedelia, r’n’b/soul, and garage rock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KrmRNMcn_I …In April 1966 FDL was beginning a series of line-up changes. Chris came on as guitarist-vocalist to replace Frank Smith, who’d quit FDL right as their single “Circles” (a Who cover) was denting the airwaves. A few months later, FDL signed to Polydor Records and were set to lay down new tracks in IBC Studios in London (Sidebar: The studio where the first tapes were made for the Mellotron keyboard). They went into IBC with 2 new tracks—a cover of The Impression’s “I’ve Been Trying,” and the “jagged, pounding” A-side, “Mud In Your Eye.” Chris said, “The night before the session, Phil (Sawyer of FDL) and I were sitting in my mum’s kitchen wondering what we were going to record for the session. Neither Phil nor I had any songs ready…so we semi-wrote ‘Mud…’ the night before we went into the studio.” Sawyer was supposed to sing lead but couldn’t nail it, so Chris laid down a snarling, gritty vocal that fit well with the heavy rhythm section of Keith Guster and Gordon Haskell and Sawyer’s slashing guitar (electric guitar geeks still rave about his playing). “Mud” didn’t perform well as a single when released November 1966, but today it’s toasted as a classic in the play files of British Rock and psychedelic music—and Fleur de Lys gets props for jump-starting the careers of Gordon Haskell (King Crimson), guitar hero Bryn Haworth, and Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship). To download this track (and catch up with Chris) go to: https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/mud-in-your-eye

SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones @ Front Street Station April 17, 1998 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvwJrfb4Rmo  This video was edited from clips captured by a fan, featuring the rarely-performed "Today's the Day" and "Rainy Jane." I was guesting (on keyboards, guitar, & vocals) w/Davy's then-band line-up: Dave "Loafy" Alexander (keyboards, vocals), Wayne Avers (guitar, vocals), Jerry Renino (bass, vocals) and (subbing for Sandy Gennaro) John O'Riley (drums, on loan from Ritchie Blackmore). Davy recorded "Today's the Day," (a cover of a Sean Maguire song) for the 1998-99 Teen Idols tour w/Peter Noone & Bobby Sherman. Neil Sedaka penned “Rainy Jane,” a single from DJ’s 1971 Bell album (still an evergreen solo work). Located in Northumberland PA, Front Street Station is a restaurant/concert venue that DJ played at almost every year from the 1994 to 2011, and we always had a fine time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvwJrfb4Rmo

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “White Sport Coat & A Pink Carnation”— https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qB0NM8JbYM
…The lyrics portray a shattered young man who was stood up at the prom but, without saying, you know he’s going to bounce back. The great Marty Robbins got the visual for this song after passing a group of teenagers decked out for their high school prom. He zipped off this song in 20 minutes. His original track (released today 4/20/57) is premium country-pop trimmed with doo-wop and rockabilly. His creamy smooth voice owns the story. With this song, his goal was to out-chart his earlier single “Singing the Blues,” which was eclipsed in a competing version by crooner Guy Mitchell. Ray Conniff arranged Mitchell’s international hit, and Marty insisted Ray run the session for his new song. Marty’s instincts were correct—it became his 3rd #1 hit, and it’s still on playlists and soundtracks (it’s also name-checked in Don McLean’s “American Pie”). Itook a shine to the song after playing it in assisted living homes. It’s a fun vocal work-out. If you have prom photos you’d like to share (white sport coat optional), please post.

Lee Vogt’s SONG OF THE WEEK: “3rd Floor Blues” https://leevogt.bandcamp.com/track/3rd-floor-blues  —A calorie-burning song that echoes Eddie Cochran’s “20 Flight Rock.” Eddie climbed stairs to see his sweetheart, but Lee climbed stairs to get to work. Lee recalls, “Climbing six flights of stairs (two between landings) from the ground floor to the third floor. Running out of gas by the second floor, what to do? At the John Adams Campus of City College of San Francisco, every day was a choice: take the elevator or climb the stairs.”
When Lee performed this song live at the college it was a resounding hit with audiences there…they knew!

STORY + SONG OF THE WEEK: “Music Up Inside of Me”— April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month. What is my musical connection to that?
Music goes places that language and science can’t explain, into the mind and into the soul. I’ve performed in places from the Royal Albert Hall to The Fillmore to Disney to Caribbean cruise ships to churches to temples in India to prisons to Las Vegas to assisted living homes to biker bars to Japanese nightclubs to subway stations to picnics and, yes! It’s true! I can testify!
Unresolved junk from childhood manifests into forms of addiction, compulsion, and personality disorder—always falling off the daily tightrope, never feeling safe. Compulsive behavior goes on because of unresolved emotional and spiritual trauma that happened early in life. We hear about that, but we don’t know what to do—until we hand it over to God. That is my experience. I wanted to heal, but (until recent years) didn’t have “the tools” to let the healing happen. For me, music has always been one of those “tools.” Music has given me healing, safety, and sustenance in more ways that I can describe. Playing it, creating it, listening to it, talking about it…this is medicinal for me.
This song is an acoustic refraction on some Motown lyrics, mixing it up with worship metaphors by the prophet Zephaniah. One day I may re-do it with a “symphonic soul” arrangement. Enjoy (feedback welcome):

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “We’re Alive” by Kris Ryder… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZ2XeA-0gPE …Like a day at the beach in Kokomo, this song is about a man who runs into an old girlfriend after she’s been down a sad road, but now they’re together and glad to be alive! Chris Andrews a.k.a. Kris Ryder presents this upbeat reggae-fied Motown-ish New Wave power pop/synthpop anthem—with fab guitar work by guitarist Phil Palmer (Eric Clapton, David Essex, Dire Straits, Wishbone Ash) + big harmonies by Kris with Dominic Bugatti and Frank Musker (who co-wrote Queen’s “Too Much Love Will Kill You”). This track was produced by Christopher Neil (A-ha, Sheena Easton). On a cosmic jukebox this song would play somewhere between The Beach Boys, The Buggles, and Men at Work.

SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “It’s Going to Be Different Today”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPEhefv7_Yc
—From my heart to your ears, a song of hope and strength…The first 2 verses are about regrets, losing powers I thought I had, and self-delusion. Then the choruses come back with the will to be different, to lose the past, rise above with God’s strength and hope, and dance away into the sun. On a cosmic jukebox this song would play between Badfinger, David Bowie, and Neil Finn. This song will be fully produced for my next album WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO THE SUN. Here’s your chance to believe life will be different in the best possible way, starting today.
