People will really say "Jonathan Sims is a good guy!" or "Jonathan Sims is a bad person!" as if a prominent message of his character arc wasn't that no matter who you are, what you do, or how you behave your actions can cause harm or good without intention, and baselessly assigning morals to people who aren't deliberately causing harm is pointless because our view of them is more about how they affect us than how they actually are.

For better or worse, everyone is just a person. We're all both not at fault and entirely to blame.

#I just think about this a lot.... Honestly, I think I personally prefer to call myself insane because everything else in terms of language for mental illness comes across as either toothless (i.e., doesn't give you the impression that your illness is "that bad") or is for sane people's comfort. It's just... wild to me just how sanitized some language feels for myself, or the idea that your illness isn't really making you ill even if you genuinely feel like you've gone insane

#mental health #mental health advocacy #i just feel like when you're talking about your issues you need to do so in a way that actually encapsulates what YOU are going through #and i just find that some of the language out there just... doesn't send the message about how my illnesses /make me ill/#i just think this is interesting 👍

Funniest thing in the world is when someone like dissects the symbolism they perceive in something you made and you're like "Wow yeag I really did that. My twisted web of genius metaphors and subtleties" [INTERNAL] What teh fuck are they talking about!!!!!!

#ESPECIALLY with art because I'm usually operating more on a loose collection of concepts than any coherent message but writing too #For example I have one friend who's loosely like beta reading 'The White Calf' and keep having moments where she's like #'wow the symbolism in this bit is interesting' or 'OHHHH I SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING THERE' and I'm like #Wait what. Oh yeah I guess that is kind of there huh. Weird #Especially funny when it's a compliment like thank you I'm glad if the loose slop I'm throwing down has assembled itself into coherency #It's not like I DON'T do anything intentionally but so much really is accidental #Art critiques were always wild for me especially ones where I was challenged about what I was trying to say because it's like.#Fuck if I know beyond a loose smattering of vibes and concepts

So @neroushalvaus told me that in the current Finnish production of Så som i himmelen, after a big assortment of other questionable choices, they interpret the finale as some sort of Literal Vision of Heaven... and in there, Tore magically heals of his disability.

The more I think about this, the more disappointed and angry I feel about it.

I mean. The whole entire point of the character of Tore is that the others learn to accept him exactly as he is, and that he has a unique, valuable voice just like everybody else. Besides that, he's a very rare instance of disabled representation within musical theatre. Sure, he's often played by non-disabled actors – but the Helsinki production showed us how you can achieve great results by splitting the role between a disabled and a non-disabled actor, so the role can also be an opportunity for disabled actors, given that they're provided enough support throughout the process.

Or it can be an opportunity for a non-disabled actor to treat disability like a costume you can simply take off when you're done with it and for a production to imply that disabled people are not good as they are, I guess. Cool beans!

Incredibly disappointed with the director and everyone else involved.

#they also cut the whole prologue and have Daniel coughing up blood and whatnot #unlike the Tore thing those choices are not offensive or anything. but I do think they're very very dumb #dunno! this detail has just been haunting me #I'm sure the actor and/or the director could explain why they've made such a choice...#but personally tbh I'm not super interested in hearing that #I think they're sending an awful message re: disabled people no matter the reasoning #oh well! I guess it's high time we had a trash fire production after so many strong ones #also I guess ymmv if you're not a big fan of the show. but I am. so there's that.#🎶 I had such hopes and now those hopes are shattered 🎶#Så som i himmelen
