Why Oxfords and not Brogues? Is it the fit or the look? Just learning stuff
The name, “Oxfords—not brogues” stems from this idea of dressing fashionably and appropriately, but in a way that is timeless and not overly ostentatious. I chose the name after seeing the original Kingsman movie in 2014 as I felt it captured the spirit of my style advice.
The Oxford shoe is a classic gentleman’s shoe, originally popularized by students at Oxford University around 1800. The closed vamp style is timeless, and continues to be a staple in today’s menswear. Brogues are a similar style of shoe with added decorative perforations, originally designed to suit the wet country terrain of Scotland and Ireland. They give off a more casual and ostentatious feeling.
“Oxfords—not brogues,” is not advice to avoid brogues altogether. One of my favorite pairs of shoes are my Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenues that I wear almost every day, and those have some brogue detailing on the toe. Trendy and decorative menswear items have a time and place in a gentleman’s wardrobe. If you have to own just one shoe or the other, though, plain oxfords are a classic shoe that will keep you looking great in a wide variety of settings. By comparison, brogues have gone in and out of style over the last few decades. They are a little more limited on what you can wear them with, as well. The goal of my blog is to provide content inspired by that theme: stylish, but versatile and timeless.
The Kavalier has a great video discussing the origin of the phrase, “Oxfords—not brogues,” and the difference between the shoes:

the thing is: while connecting with the trans community is important and you should do that regardless of your identity, because trans men and trans women and nonbinary people and all other trans people all have a lot in common... you, a trans person of any identity, do also have a lot in common with, say, cis queer people.
so as a trans man, there is nothing wrong with relating with or taking inspiration from cis queer men (or, hell, cishet men) when regarding your gender. you're not doing anything "wrong" or being somehow indirectly bigoted, and you're not obligated to always look towards other trans people (who may be fucking with gender but not in the same way you do) for inspiration.
it's no less progressive to see a cis gay dude and go "I want to be like that". it's not wrong to see yourself in cis men - it's actually perfectly normal. and helpful, plenty of times - as much as trans men helped me with male fashion, I've also looked at cis men who presented like i wanted to, even if I didn't exactly look a lot like them.

I love transmasc Will headcanons as much as the next guy but whats interesting to me is that it could also explain how he dresses. Like when he figured out he was trans he had to go through the process of learning to dress masculine all on his own. And because his father (his only male role model) was a mechanic and fisherman, he learned to dress for practicality and not style. He understands the basics (button down shirt, plaid, slacks, watch, wear a tie or blazer for professional occasions, etc) but doesn't know how to put them into practice. Its like a lot of his fashion sense is him standing in the mirror and guessing "this is what men wear right?" AND on top of that, he's likely most comfortable in the style he first explored after he figured out he was trans.. so its not like he doesn't know that his style is lacking, its that he's worried about looking "wrong" or even not passing if he tries to branch out (as well as being overwhelmed and unsure of where to start or who to ask for adivce) Does this make sense or am I projecting too hard?

Something I've noticed lately. Don't know if it's a Lake Tahoe thing or a general thing. You'd see really good-looking guys with the most ridiculously attrocious moustaches. What's the deal? Why? Who told them it looks good?

I need help with a time sensitive question. My friend just invited me to her wedding but it's in a week and a half and I need something to wear.
I have a black silk button down but I'm not sure about wearing a black shirt.
I'm only going to the ceremony because she's having a very small reception with just family, and it'll be in the morning.
I need at a minimum a nice pair of slacks to wear with the top, and possibly also a button down in a different colour. And maybe a vest to spice things up.
Any suggestions?? I'm too curvy for the men's department so that's the main issue.

The Finishing TouchHow the Right Accessories Can Transform Your Look
Picture this: you've meticulously selected your attire, each garment tailored to perfection. But wait, there's something missing—a touch of finesse, a hint of personality. Fear not, for the right accessories can transform your ensemble from ordinary to extraordinary.
Let's start with the basics, shall we? A classic timepiece, adorning your wrist with elegance and precision. Whether it's a sleek stainless steel watch or a vintage-inspired leather strap, choose one that speaks to your style and sophistication. Remember, gents, punctuality is key, but a well-chosen timepiece speaks volumes about your taste.
Next up, we have the indispensable accessory—the belt. Far more than a mere utility, a carefully selected belt can tie your entire look together. Opt for genuine leather for a touch of luxury, and pay attention to the buckle—it's the subtle details that elevate your outfit from good to great.
Ah, but let us not forget the power of eyewear. A stylish pair of sunglasses not only shields your eyes from the sun's glare but also adds an air of mystery and allure. Whether you prefer aviators, wayfarers, or classic tortoiseshell frames, choose a style that complements your face shape and personality.
And what of the pocket square, you ask? Ah, the pocket square—small in size but mighty in impact. Whether neatly folded or casually stuffed, a pocket square injects a pop of color and flair into your ensemble. Experiment with different fabrics, patterns, and folds to showcase your individuality.
Last but certainly not least, we have the pièce de résistance—the footwear. A well-crafted pair of shoes can make or break an outfit, so choose wisely. Whether it's a polished pair of oxfords for a formal affair or suede loafers for a more relaxed vibe, invest in quality footwear that exudes confidence and sophistication.
Remember that accessorizing is an art form—a subtle yet powerful way to express your personal style and elevate your outfits to new heights. So embrace the details, experiment with different combinations, and above all, wear your accessories with confidence. Until next time, keep curating.

What is the proper length I should hem my pants?
Tumblr media
Short answer:
Somewhere in between a full break and no break. I personally ask for a quarter break because I like the clean look, and it adds some height to my silhouette.
———
Negative break and no break have been popular in the last 10 years, but in my opinion, they have made their way out of fashion. On the flip side, allowing your shoes to be swallowed in billowy, full break trousers is a master level style swerve best left for fashion experts looking to make a statement.
There’s no surprise to those that have followed me for a long time that I land somewhere in the middle. Half break or quarter break hemmed pants provide a clean silhouette and will add some height to the overall look.
Proper cloth has some more detailed information on what to ask for or look for at the tailor when getting your pants hemmed here:
