Gianni Versace and his inseparable bond with his homeland, Calabria
Born in Reggio Calabria on 2 December 1946, Gianni Versace is considered one of the most innovative and original designers in the history of fashion and he was the founder of the fashion house of the same name in 1978.
Versace has an inseparable bond with Southern Italy's Calabria and Magna Graecia, a land that is constantly remembered in the brand's designs from the 1980s to today. This explains the columns, the mythological figures, Medusa herself, or the Greek key, symbol of Minos' labyrinth.
Tumblr media
Magna Graecia was the name given by the Romans to the Greek-speaking coastal areas of Southern Italy in the present-day Italian regions of Calabria, Apulia, Basilicata, Campania and Sicily; these regions were extensively populated by Greek settlers starting from the 8th century BC.
Right there, in Reggio Calabria, Versace began to take its first steps. Gianni learned everything in his mother's atelier, a skilled seamstress, at number 13 in via Tommaso Gulli, near the Duomo where the Versace boutique was located for a few years. Then, when he was 25 he moved to Milan to attempt the big leap into fashion world.
Tumblr media
"Reggio is the kingdom where the fairy tale of my life began: my mother's tailoring shop, the Haute Couture boutique. It is the place where, as a child, I began to appreciate the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Aeneid; where I began to breathe the art of Magna Graecia".
Tumblr media
Today the Versace fashion house needs no introduction, it is among the most famous high fashion houses in the world, known for its significant impact on pop culture. He has dressed the biggest celebrities since the beginning in the 80s, but he has not forgotten his origins.
Tumblr media
He was murdered in 1997 in front of his home in Miami Beach in circumstances that have never been fully clarified.
In a context where the cultural and archaeological heritage of Calabria is often overlooked, it is heartening to note how a brand of this magnitude has never forgotten its origins, translating the symbols of its land into logos with an eye-catching design.

'The Pretino Dress' 1956
Design House Sorelle Fontana
Modeled by Ava Gardner
"The little priest dress was created in 1956. It was the result of a sort of combination between creativity, friendship with Ava Gardner, and respect for the religious institutions. My sisters and I, all faithful practicing Catholics, asked the authorities the permission to design the dress, and the Vatican approved it. Their positive answer filled us with pride and gratitude." -Micol Fontana
