hello! I was scrolling through your blog (delightful) and found the post about Beef and his whiskers position, and I'm ashamed to say that in all my near-thirty years of being around cats and thinking I understand them pretty well I never thought to pay attention to the 'circle shape'. could you please expound a bit on what to look for when it comes to whiskers position and how to interpret it? Beef is an absolute sweetheart but looking at a brachy cat as an example makes it a bit hard for me to generalize. thank you!
Thank you! And also thank you for your patience--- I wanted to give some really good examples and have been scouring my blog for the best circle whisker cats I could find.
Picture heavy post under this.
Tumblr media
so this is the cat grimace scale. It's a sort of way to visually see if a cat is in pain/distress, and it gives a simplified view of the things I'm going to discuss. It's important to recognize that whisker shape/position is just ONE piece of communication and doesn't tell the whole story. A lot of this is also based on CONTEXT as well.
When you're looking at a cat face, here are the things you really want to pay attention to:
Ear position—Ears facing forward, ears slightly pulled apart, or ears flattened and rotated outward.
Orbital tightening—Eyes opened, eyes partially opened, or eyes squinted.
Muzzle tension—Muzzle relaxed (round), muzzle mildly tense, or muzzle tense (elliptical).
Whisker position—Whiskers loose and curved, whiskers slightly curved or straight, or whiskers straight and moving forward.
Head position—Head above the shoulder line, head aligned with the shoulder line, or head below the shoulder line or tilted.
Tumblr media
Calypso's huge whiskers give a REALLY good visual on the 'circle shape' to look for. You can see her whiskers are pushed forward and are loose and curved. She's feeling playful and engaged! She really wants to know what I'm up to and what's in my hand (spoiler alert, it was treats)
Compare that to this later picture, taken after she heard a dog bark nearby:
Tumblr media
Her muzzle is tighter. Her whiskers are pulled back a bit, and are straight. Her ears are set differently as well, one pulled back a bit. She's concerned, but not terribly worried about this strange sound.
You can also compare it to this handsome lad:
Tumblr media
Again, his whiskers are fairly straight. They aren't pulled back as far, but he's still very tense. He was extremely tense and upset that I took his water dish away from him (because it needed to be cleaned and changed).
Tumblr media
Milo is another great example of excited whiskers. They're pushed forward and curved, forming a sort of circle. Like Calypso, he's interested in what I'm doing and feeling playful. He was very interested in the toy I was throwing for him.
Tumblr media
Gumdrop is a good example of a more relaxed whisker position. She's curious, but not feeling playful. Her whiskers are held very loosely rather than being pushed forward. Her tail nub is up, indicating friendliness and confidence.

this is what jvp wrote in response to the butchered Hebrew. what a fucking joke.
Jews: "hey dude your Hebrew is written from left to right, you didn't even have the common sense to double check your spelling"
JVP: "umm actually it's Zionism's fault for forcing Hebrew on their Jews and erasing their real indigenous languages 🤡"
Jews: "you realise.... the seder plate.... is always written in Hebrew..... the language of the Torah.... and it has no connection to modern Hebrew whatsoever........ you literally just had to google a seder plate and copy the fucking words........"
and just to prove this takes 5 seconds to verify:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
not only can you find a reference on google images pretty easily, you can also look it up on shopping sites like amazon to guarantee photos of empty plates (since a lot of the photos on google had the food items on them).
it's not hard to verify this, this even shows up if you google "passover plate" in case you somehow don't know what a seder is, there's no excuse for making a mistake on the most important item on the fucking table.

Why did you include neopronouns in your linguistic course? If you did, I hope you specified that neopronouns are neologisms (at least in English) and that pronouns are a pretty closed class category of words in English.
i really hope you didn't intend this to seem as condescending as it turned out <3

It bothers me a lot how so much of how tumblr has decided is the “right way” to do disabled representation is so. Alien from actual disabled experiences. Your good disabled representation has to have a lightweight, low backed, sporty manual wheelchair. Dont think about the fact that many wheelchair users can’t self propel in a manual chair, or that most people can only afford the most basic standard hospital chair. Dont you know that’s bad representation! Your cane user OC shouldn’t be putting more than 20 percent of their weight on their cane because that’s Wrong, don’t worry about how canes are the most accessible mobility aid and be plenty of people who should actually be using crutches or a rollator are using cane out of necessity and will have to use them “incorrectly” that’s bad representation. They shouldn’t be embarrassed or ashamed of their medical devices, they should always wear their ostomy bag outside of their clothes, because that’s the way I can show my viewers that I care about representation! All feeding tubes go through the nose right? That way I can show off my representation! They can all help in their own way! Just because they’re disabled doesn’t mean they can’t lift heavy boxes, or join an adventuring party, or play sports, or be a punk rocker! They can’t be suicidal: that’s bad representation! They can be angry but only ever at the obviously evil ableist cardboard cutout villain. Never at their own limitations, or at the well meaning protagonist who doesn’t even have to be told how to make the setting 100% accessible. Everything less is Bad Representation!

it kills me how much people love to speculate on the trans male experience. transphobes and even other trans people will conjure up ideas of what it must be like for us to live, how hormones affect us, and especially what society treats us like. they love to tell us how we live our lives; strawman after strawman about fictional trans men who started hormones and became "evil and ugly", completely fabricated stories about about how every trans man they know suddenly "gained male privilege" and never deal with misogyny or transandrophobia.
people who tell you how your transmasculine experience will go have no idea what they are talking about. even if they sound confident, they are not correct- each and every transmasculine person has a different experience in life- we do not automatically gain the societal privilege of cishet white men once we decide to socially transition. they cannot see what your future holds. you don't deserve to have someone telling you how you will experience your own life, it is yours, you are allowed to live your truth, pave your own way and prove that we have varied lives that transcend what transphobes think the trans male experience is.

While it sucked seeing a decently popular creator plagiarise my work and go on to gain significantly more money and notoriety than me at least it means no one thinks the SU Critical trend was my fault, honestly probably the wackiest way a person could ever be bailed out of a situation. Who could possibly give a shit about my misinformed and underdeveloped opinions about everything except fight scenes when we have an absolute legend here saying LAPIS was the abuser and calling Rebecca Sugar a pervert for... *checks notes* having a nonbinary character. A full two hours of the most batshit opinions you've ever heard sandwiched between stolen blocks of text and veiled shipping discourse. Just completely overwrote whatever impact I would have had. I made out like a bandit. Absolutely no way the SU Critical shitshow can be blamed on me now. God works in mysterious ways

Terfism is targeted at radicalising older-middle-aged women in order to sever the otherwise naturally-forming bond that makes trans women and older-middle-aged cis women the strongest of comrades via our shared interests and experiences.

chewing on drywall thinking about how many people never pursue phalloplasty because of transphobic misinformation about functionality & appearance & the belief that anything less than the Platonic Ideal of Human Penis is completely worthless

in the interest of combating misinformation about phalloplasty, uhhh, i heard there's a whole erective apparatus one can get installed that sounds entirely unappealing for me to have but afaik it's the only option
was i lied to? do i actually not have to have foriegn objects jammed in (to me) uncomfortable places to get an erection?
Until the day comes that we can recreate erectile tissue, erectile devices are the only way to create an erection with phallo. They use the same things people with natal penises use when they have erectile dysfunction. However, there is company working on making products specifically for trans people, though they aren't available in the US yet.
There are ones that are external, and then the internal ones you are describing. There are two different types of internal EDs: a semi-rigid rod that (in the words of my friend) you can move around like a pipe cleaner, and a pump which allows you to go from soft to hard. You should also check out phallo.net's How Penile Implants Work to get a sense of the process and the differences between types.
I would recommend reading people's experiences with EDs to get a better sense of whether or not an implant is something you would want. r/phallo is a good place for that, and you can also read Finlay Games post on his experience 9 months post-op. The implant is definitely not a requirement for getting phalloplasty.

The controversy around terms like “detrans” bug me because it’s actually really complicated and difficult to solve. The problem is that some people use detrans to refer to personal journeys of people who self-identify that way due to identifying as trans and then not or due to accessing transitional medical care and then either reversing or ceasing that medical care. (Already complicated because people use it to refer to different things and do/don’t identify that way for different reasons, but this isn’t where most of the controversy comes from.) Which like, great. I wish them well. I think all detransitioning people should have meaningful and fulfilling journeys that includes access to all the medical care that would be meaningful to them. Great.
Unfortunately, other people use terms like “de-trans” or “detrans” to mean something similar to ex-gay. Ex-gay doesn’t just mean someone who thought they were gay for awhile and turned out they’re not, it’s usually used to refer to a specific community of (usually religious) people who have gone through conversation therapy that they believed changed their orientation, and think anyone LGBTQ+ in general should do the same because being LGBTQ+ is immoral/unhealthy. Unfortunately there’s large communities of people who use “detrans” in the same way, referring to not only personal journeys, but a general ideology that trans people should be subject to conversion therapy that treats transitioning and trans identity as a negative outcome. An ideology that trans identities can and should be changed as being trans is inherently undesirable.
The amount of people with this kind of transphobic, bigoted ideology make detrans spaces too often toxic and hard to access, and make many LGBTQ+ and trans people wary and misunderstanding of the word “detrans”. You hear the term “ex-gay” and you know what you’re getting, but detrans is used both by plenty of perfectly ordinary detransitioning people as well as total bigots who use it like a trans version of ex-gay. And for younger people who mostly know these terms from the internet, they might be familiar with “detrans” as a term being used as the trans equivalent of “ex-gay” rather than to refer to personal journeys.
Just makes spaces much more difficult to navigate for everyone and makes controversy around the term basically inevitable.
no seriously. i dont think we can ever escape ideology but it really sucks that there’s an identity that’s been treated as synonymous an ideology that hurts them. if youre detrans and miserable, i’m so sorry and i hope it gets better

Taylor Swift: dropping her worst album in years about how deeply obsessed she is with Matty Healy
Billie Eilish, for some reason:
