i need someone i can yell at about my very niche tma au ;w;

(see me playing fast and loose between tma lore and mdzs canon under the cut wheeee~)

this is part headcanon, part drabble, all-around mess. just dont think too hard about it please

the classification of each entity isn’t fully documented yet, smirke’s 14 doesn’t exist, but each major clan has a specific fear that called their founders. there are also some entities haven’t been identified yet so a lot of fears bleed into each other

they’re still cultivators here. they’re cultivating fear.

golden cores are the physical manifestation of your connection with your god within your body. the more you feed it, the more connected you are to your patron, the more powerful you become.

each clan is a powerhouse to a specific entity but their disciples can be touched by multiple entities (and honestly, i cant make everyone a slaughter avatar) only the sect leader needs to be fully devoted to their fear god

Gusu Lan = Beholding, Qinghe Nie = Slaughter, Yunmeng Jiang = Hunt, Lanling Jin = Stranger, and Qishan Wen = Desolation

wei wuxian was once heavily touched by the hunt. his mother a famous Huntress and rogue cultivator and his father a servant and close friend to the sect of The Everchase

jiang cheng’s Hunt core is slightly weaker but its fine because they are of the same pack. they are partners, brothers in everything but blood, and will hunt down anyone who dares to hurt the other.

jiang yanli isn’t an avatar, not marked by the hunt but touched by the Hive, manifesting more on the love/belonging and family aspect rather than the filth aspect

i have more Thots about the family aspects between hive/hunt and how they are both very possessive on who they call their Persons but expresses it different ways that mirror jyl and jc but that’s for a different post

during their time in the cloud recesses they meet a quiet watcher who wwx immediately zones in on him as his new “prey”.

lan wangji is silent and knowledgeable as is expected from a disciple of the beholding, but there is a certain chill around him that other eye avatars do not have

wwx stalks the poor boy, pounces on him whenever he manages to catch him alone, and is just a general disturbance all-around.

he does not feel the Eyes that sometimes watch him when he is alone.

lan xichen does not need the beholding’s power to see the way his brother looks at the young hunter disciple. he is pleased to feel the cold surrounding the jingshi has lessened. shufu seems perplexed and torn.

wwx’s also has his eye on jin zixuan, the pompous plastic peacock that’s engaged to his shijie. he isn’t actually allowed to hunt him down so he settles on dismembering the lifeless mannequins that he uses as servants.

(playing with the timeline here) they get kicked out when a text is destroyed within the Library Pavilion even though it was just a pornography book (any kind of knowledge is still knowledge) and even though it was lwj who destroyed it (the eye had punished him severely for that).

the desolation!wen are attempting to bring The Scourged Earth into the world. they burn down the cloud recesses “in the name of ‘cleaning up the place’ so that it would be ‘reborn from the firelight.’” ( - directly from the mdzs wiki)

the xuanwu of slaughter is an ancient manifestation of, well, the slaughter and cannot be reasoned with.

(”Lan Zhan, can you See anything?” “No. My connection with The Beholding has been greatly severed.” “Oh. well.. Uh, it’s kinda foggy in here huh? Here have my outer robe, you look kinda cold.” “…Mn.”)

lotus pier burns and jiang cheng loses his core. wwx asks flesh!wen qing for help because only an avatar of the flesh (the boneturner, though that isn’t its name yet) is able to carve open another avatar long enough to take something out and place it somewhere else.

jiang cheng immediately becomes a fully-fledged avatar using wwx’s hunt-influenced core. it manifests as strong bloodlust against the wens, fear of being seen as weak prey by the other clans, (and later, hunting down wwx and other end-aligned cultivators.)

wwx gets thrown in the burial mounds. he is dead for three whole months. and then he wakes up.

his hunter core is gone but that’s fine. he is alive not because he wants to but because he has to. when he is awake, he calls upon the dead to exact his revenge. the wens are defeated and everyone is in frightened awe of the new being that he has unwillingly become. when he is asleep, black tendrils of death plague his dreams. He relives the horrible memories of his own and others’ deaths. sometimes he can feel someone watching him but cannot see them in return.

wei wuxian is alive but he is not part of jiang cheng’s pack anymore. he does not follow them out on hunts anymore, doesn’t even bother to stay within the residences. he isn’t part of their pack anymore, abandoned their patron for something else more powerful, and for what? he feels resentment brewing inside him. resentment and fear.

wwx knew not to trust the polished and waxed faces of the jins. all the wen remnants are non-avatars, barely touched by anything other than the fear the jins had instilled by themselves. they do not deserve this cruelty, to be both entertainment and livestock for the rest of the cultivation world. it is true that death comes for everyone, but wwx will not let these people die at the hands of these strangers.

the wens become touched by the End during their stay in the burial mounds. wen ning, with flute music playing in his head, wins an archery game against Death and finally wakes.

one day a cold mist surrounds yilling when wwx takes a-yuan out on a stroll. He loses him but finds him again clinging to a man in white robes that looks like he wants to disappear. wwx feels himself smile brightly at the sight. (”lan zhan! it’s so nice to see you again! It’s been so cold out today but luckily it’s warmer now!” “Mn.” “You really blend in with the fog with those white robes of yours. it’s okay though because i’m sure i can find you wherever you disappear to!” “Mn.”)

qiongqi path becomes a massacre of plastic mannequins and not!beings. the smell of death and manufactured flesh fill the air like an offering to his unwanted patron, and black tendrils surround wwx and his assailants. It blinds him and he can’t see it, can’t control it, can’t stop it as jin zixuan is pierced through his chest and falls to the ground, dead.

the clans are outraged. they speak in fear of him, they hear of his power over life and death and that he, like the wen fugitives by his side, is trying to bring about his patron into the world. they call for an attack, a bloodbath to take him down once and for all.

and a bloodbath it is. the entire cultivation world against a one-man army. fear rings high in the air and all the Entities are well fed in the aftermath, the most satisfied: Slaughter and (paradoxical to their intent) The End.

later, much later, when the siege is over and nothing is left of his anchor other than a small child marked by death, lwj accepts the punishment lashes and then goes into cold seclusion. the jingshi is completely covered by clouds of fog. no one can See him, the elders only get a debilitating headache when they try to pry too hard. not even lxc, who has become the Eye’s most devoted avatar, can know his brother’s whereabouts. only lan yuan seems to able to navigate through the dense gloom.

the world moves on

jin guangyao’s wide smiles are not conspicuous within the plastic faces and painted lips within lanling jin. If his limbs are too long or if his smile a bit distorted or if he disappears through a bright yellow door and doesnt come back then no one makes mention of it.

No one also notices the webs above them hidden in the high ceilings of lanling jin nor the tiny spiders that skitter around the gossiping servants, spinning and weaving threads of thick silk around them.

it takes years for his brother to come out from the fog and lxc nearly weeps at the knowledge that The Lonely had not forsaken another member of his family. still, lwj has changed. there is a certain chill around him now that persists wherever he goes. though he has always been silent since childhood, his silence now is cold and unfeeling, eyes faraway as if not seeing those around him and only floating through the days. He is not completely alone though and that is enough to alleviate some of xichen’s worries.

time abates some wounds but certainly not all. there is still an empty cold pit in lwj’s chest but it does not bleed as freely as it did 10 years before. Before, he would have readily disappeared into the fog when the elders comes to look for him, now he chooses to disappear from the cloud recesses and absconds into night hunts. he goes wherever the chaos is, seeking (but not willing to hope) that he might find something that can stir the deadness in his heart.

Listen listen, I’m not sure how much fandom overlap goes on between mxtx and tma but I DO know that I think it would be absolutely hilarious if someone wrote the equivalent of the straight tma tma crossover fic with mdzs and het og cqlverse, but make it worse.

Wen Qing and WWX reunite. She was alive all this time because WWX sacrificed himself for her and the power of true love and also ghosts protected her or something. LWJ says he loves WWX like a brother and the two share a manly bro side hug before LWJ confesses that he really has loved LQY all along. They get married.

WWX overcomes the trials and tribulations of resentful energy through the power of (het) love and kills JGY who was gay. NHS is revealed as trans. This is treated as another one of his schemes and terribly handled by everyone involved. NHS also reveals that MXY wasn’t actually gay, that was JGY trying to save his own reputation.

There’s an epilogue scene where Little Apple looks over to see another donkey with massive eyelashes and lipstick. And then this version of WWX and og WWX swap bodies. og WWX is almost happy at first. Things got resolved way more cleanly in this universe thanks to the power of (het) love and plot holes after all! Then. Of course. The slowly dawning horror as he realizes just how w r o n g this universe has gone. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN LAN ZHAN IS MARRIED TO MIANMIAN” Smash cut to straighverse WWX waking up in bed with... HIS HUSBAND?!?!?!

And oh boy!! has this awakened something!

thinking about mdz-tma au again....

specifically about lonely!lwj and him unconsciously making wwx his anchor in the xuanwu cave. places feeling cold when lwj is around but significantly lightens up when wwx arrives. lwj just straight-up disappearing in panic after he kissed wwx. learning how to disappear at will and makes full use of it during conferences. dense fog following lwj wherever he goes when wwx gets ostracized ( and only lessened that one day when a child somehow came up to him and clung onto his leg)

fog shrouding the entire battlefield during the first siege that not even avatars of the beholding can see through, carrying a barely-conscious wwx away and disappearing into the fog, desperately transferring qi to his beloved anchor and clinging onto him despite the other man constantly telling him to "get lost"

and later, he does drift into his own fog, losing himself in cold and silent seclusion

#lwj is actually a mix of lonely and beholding (bc im a sucker for lonelyeyes) but lonely!lwj is just so yummy hehhe #oh wwx is end-aligned obviously but before the core transfer he was hunt-aligned just like the rest of the jiang sect #posting on main bc i have more tma mutuals here and i am pspsps-ing yall to read mdzs so i have more ppl to yell at about this au #mdzs

the autopsy garland -- dsmp hunger games au about rpf fandom and the horrors of celebrity. parts of it have aged poorly--it's about, in part, both the fandom and hatedom surrounding cc!dream and the dream smp as a whole, and also unrelatedly it's about sexual abuse, and, uh, it was published before the dream situation let alone any of the ones that came after it, i have no clue what it'd look like if i wrote it now but certainly it would look wildly different--but i'm still so fucking proud of it. the epistolary sections. the bits of canon dialogue. threading the line between "this guy did awful awful things" and "holy shit, the stuff happening to him is not okay to do to anyone"

between the moth and the moon -- lifesteal, a gentle moment between vitalasy & zam. i wrote this one bc i needed zam to tell vitalasy i mourned you. it's a missing scene and it's one i needed and it's gentle and soft and bittersweet and i go reread it whenever i'm sad about them (this is often)

i don't have the heart to match -- mdzs, my Trans Woman Jiang Cheng Manifesto. there is something so special in my heart for yunmeng shuangjie and jc's issues about wei wuxian and Duty and jealousy and. and. man

Your Body Is Not A Word -- tma fic about s4 jonathan sims exchanging sex for statements. it's about sexual trauma and it's about starving and it's about being both victim and monster and it's about not really being able to believe in the dialectic there and it's about making choices that hurt yourself because you don't having any good options left and not-doing-anything hurts too.

whatever a moon has always meant -- indis/míriel silmarillion fic which is nominally about LaCE and in practice about Catholic sexual ethics & the Catholic outlook more broadly. it's also about grief and doubt and a lot of other things but it's very very Catholic and struggling with that Catholicism. it gets kind of ... pretentious? overwrought in a very teenage fashion? at times, but the core of it is very important to me. considered doing one of my númenor or maedhros fics here instead, there's some good stuff there as well, but. idk. this one's got a soft spot in my heart and it's less Relentlessly Fucking Depressing lol

I was going to make a case for a mdzs!tma au but then it came to me, tgcf!tma

Spoilers for both series under the cut. Major spoilers. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Xie Lian who is Jun Wu's version of Jonah Magnus's Jon. Someone puppeteered to be touched by ever major fear.

Xie Lian's The Buried? See Guoshi Fangxin being buried

Xie Lian's The Corruption? Human-Face disease

Xie Lian's The Dark? Not seeing the sun for a century would do it.

Xie Lian's The Desolation? When his temples and statues were destroyed, his legacy torn and burned.

Xie Lian's The End? He has truly been surrounded by so, so much death.

Xie Lian's The Eye? His very public fall from grace.

Xie Lian's The Flesh? Also Human Face disease! And all the other body horror he's seen in general.

Xie Lian's The Hunt? Bai Wuxiang chasing him down and swooping in when he's most vulnerable. Also just. His own monster of the week hunting.

Xie Lian's The Lonely? Remember when he said a malovent spirit tried to drive him mad and Xie Lian welcomed it because it was some company? Yeah.

I know that the fears back then were probably not as concrete as when tma is set but i just thought it was interesting! I could totally see a modern au of this too at the good old Magnus Institute. If Jonah Magnus takes over the body of a Chinese man is that him being lowkey racist?

Also when Jon went all paranoid in s2 and drove everyone away- XL after his first banishment. I can see it so clearly I swear.

Also, Hua Cheng was touched by the fears too;; right? Completely unintentionally. (Buried: Mount Tonglu, Corruption: Butterflies maybe? could also just he HFD again, Dark: He's probably spent years hidden in temples without a candle so he doesn't get caught, Desolation: 33 gods, End: He's died like;;; thrice? good enough, Eye: probably being bullied for his eye and wanting people to stop looking at him so he can disappear or how he could only watch as people drove a blade into xl's chest, Flesh: He tore his eye out and put in a sword for heaven's sake and just;;; ghost city vendors, Hunt: He's got that Prey turned Predator smugness, Lonely: Must I explain this., Slaughter: Tonglu probably but he's seen a lot more than that, Spiral: Def has been on the verge of going insane multiple times and doubting his memories, Stranger: ghosts shenanigans prolly, Vast: Falling at the parade, Web: he created his own trap for the 33 gods).

So this royally fucks up plans and boom love wins.

By nearly all accounts, it was a peaceful day in Cloud Recesses. (My only published fic - Where We Fit in This Strange New World, MDZS post-canon)

2. Adventure was possible—of that he was certain. (Unpublished, unfinished OFMD fic - Tolkien AU)

3. "Oh, my head." (Unpublished, unfinished TMA fic, post-canon; first chapter is in transcript format, this is the first spoken line.)

4. It was 24 Cloudreach, 9:42 Dragon. (Unpublished, unfinished yadda, DA:I post-canon character study)

5. The first story was for them: the one seen by the masses, the one that will live on beyond anyone in it, the twisting of facts to create castle walls—the legend. (Unpub/unfin DA II retelling)

6. We were told to never interact with the Others. (Scraps of something I was going to work with and never did.)

7. It wasn't a particularly remarkable day when It all happened. (Not scrapped, per se, but this won't be the first iteration of the story anymore)

8. If someone told me a year ago what my life would be like now, I wouldn’t have believed them. (From a mostly finished script for an original comic I'm still in the planning stages of.)

9. "Hello, this is Jim Davis speaking, may I inquire who I’m speaking to?" (Screenplay from my brief stint as a comm major. Fun fact: it's filmed and up on YouTube)

One I'm realistically never going to write but I do have a title for is "and put dirt on" (from "my brother went down to the river/and put dirt on") which would be a TMA ~ AU for MDZS, with Corruption avatar Jiang Cheng. Something about his desperate need for community, to be loved, plus his themes of poison (sandu sengshou) and the amount of mosquitoes and bugs and stuff in water...

It would be not super plotty, mostly vingettes? Starting from cloud recesses era or slightly before, when he first starts associating I Have A Strange Connection With Bugs to his isolation/feeling loved conditionally, and continuing as his relationship with bugs gets stronger and his relationship with Wei Wuxian gets worse, ending with probably wwx's resurrection Or with the ending of the temple scene?

MDZS x TMA AU

Leaving The Lonely after finding each other.

"Together?"

"One way or another. Together."

Yes. I always aim to hit where it hurts. (my version of that one scene in the MAG 200 it just has less angst). Also the most out of this world supernatural thing that happens in this au is wwx figuring out lwj's feelings right away.

CONTEXT:

Wei Wuxian scared of his own powers that have yet to become truly his, haunted by dreams of the dead which he refuses to tell anyone. He never felt so truly and utterly alone.

It's no surprise when he ends up wandering in Lan Wangji's domain in The Lonely.

But through the fog, between the clouded dream state of his mind and the brief moments of dreadful consciousness, he keeps seeing glimpses of someone.

He inevitably falls in love for the the man he sometimes sees through the fog.

(basically wwx annoys an avatar of the lonely enough into eloping with him)

okay! tma au time!

so i’m gonna start off by saying jgs is elias in this au. i dont care what you say about elias’ sexy voice or charisma or whatever, they’re both slimy and evil. also gertrude, so to speak, is wen chao. (bear with me pls)

most other people are assistants. i think? i mean lwj, wwx, jzx and a few others are?

(my brain says it would be funny to have lwj as sasha and su she as not!sasha but lwj deserves better than that)

i’m not really gonna follow the plot of tma bc rip

anyway!

the assistants are just kind of vibing in the archives when they discover that wrh, who’s like the chief of police and is an avatar of the slaughter, is actively killing people for the fears bc acab

does he have a deal with jgs and that’s why wen chao is the archivist? yeah probably. wen chao is the archivist bc daddy had connections. wrh put jgs in charge and sent wen chao to make sure everything was running how wrh wanted it to be

yeah, wrh wants to have control over all the fears or something idk

so wen chao is the archivist. but unlike gertrude who purposefully made things really messy and a nightmare he’s just really incompetent. wen zhuliu is the avatar of the distortion and theyre tight bc zhuliu owes wrh or whatever.

so the wrh stuff comes out and a bunch of people band together to try and bring justice to him and thus we have the sunshot campaign

maybe all the families have their own fears? the lans are the lonely and the nies are the hunt. jfm and yzy are avatars of the bad parenting idk.

anyway, before they took any action, wwx had already started investigating bc wen chao is a lil bitch and very suspicious

while investigating wwx gets sucked into the archivist stuff and ends up being thrown into the tunnels under the institute with wen zhuliu who then proceeds to do distortion fuckery for three months

he finally escapes and kills wen zhuliu using the powers he’d begun to develop in the tunnels (it’s so strange that he stumbled across a tape recorder which he’d named chenqing and after that he kept finding statements,,, so strange)

he’s killed wen zhuliu so he goes off and kills wen chao and now he’s the archivist whoo

he joins up with the others and they go kill wrh, sweet it’s all dealt with but jgs starts spreading shit about how all the wens are terrible and must be killed (including wen qing’s family who are like paramedics who work ed with the police, so not cops but forced to work w/ them)

while jgs is touting that bs jgy is in the background slowly manipulating wwx into getting all the different marks (idk what they were called) from the different fears

he gets kidnapped by xue yang who is nikola and spends a month getting moisturised by him and told that wow he’s so impressive killing the other avatars,, im gonna follow in your footsteps (let’s say that avatars have a truce not to kill each other in this world. like they’re all equals and pretty much the same strength so there’s no real point in killing each other or trying to kill each other)

wwx escapes and im kinda annoyed we dont have enough bad guys for wwx to properly get his marks but whatever

he goes back to the archives and they come up with a plan to kill xue yang and they go off and do it

imma let you pick what happens here. does jzx die? do we let xxc and sl have the spotlight and this is where their story comes into play?

whatever happens, wwx goes into a coma for thirteen months and enter extremely hot avatar of the end who helps him wake up (mo xuanyu?? mo xuanyu.)

he goes back to the archives and lwj has been taken by the lonely while he was gone so he’s working with his uncle again (the lans are the lukases and i take no criticism)

side note: in this au wwx gets two phobias! (gee wwx! how come you get to have two phobias?)

so mr spider was definitely a thing and so were the dogs

while wwx was on the streets he found this book and he’d just started learning how to read so he decided to practise but then some other kid stole it from him and he ended up watching him get eaten by a giant spider also the dogs attacked him bc no rest for wwx

does wwx pretend not to be aware?? i’d say yes. if not bc of trauma then bc it’s super obvious and the look on lwj’s face when the jane prentiss equivalent attacks and wwx says wow those worms were a lil weird huh? is so funny to him

anyway lwj was in the know the whole time and he probably moved out of his family home and joined the archives so he could investigate jgs but then wwx dies and hes like aight yeah imma feel real lonely right now

so wwx comes back and jc, who had been the host of ghost hunt CW (cultivation world) and was attacked by an evil ghost, tries to kill him

after their fight and subsequent freedom from the slaughter and the eye (sans eye removing bc fuck that) jc moves in with jyl

im sorry that what the girlfriends isnt a thing here but i love the idea of a jyl who just isnt scared of anything because she’s seen death and just can’t get scared anymore

she still dates an archives employee though. it’s jzx, who is kinda like tim in this au i guess? did he die in that explosion? (i want to say no so jyl would be happy but if he dies and she’s mourning him and jc and wwx fought,, well now wwx is alone for bad decision times)

one day wen qing comes up and is like pls help my brother, he’s been taken by the buried so wwx runs off and finds breekon and hope (su she and jin zixun), kill jin zixun and steals the coffin

the rest of the wens are in hiding atm so he doesnt have to like monkey chain all the wens out of the coffin

so wwx goes inside the coffin and rescues wen ning (bc jon and daisy’s relationship was super sweet)

they get out and immediately run away with wen qing and the rest of the wens

where do they go? wen qing’s cute cottage in scotland (or cultivation world equivalent)

so they’re living as farmers and wwx is getting sick bc he can’t get statements from here but he has to protect them bc the jins keep attacking (what are the jins working for?? idk. the vast? the dark? who knows, not me)

anyway lwj comes and is like you have to come back to gusu/the archives and wwx is like no! bc he has to protect the wens

so lwj is like fuck ive gotta move my timeline up and find a way to off jgs

jgy ends up doing it and lwj is like /: my revenge,,

everyone is happy! jgs is dead, wrh is dead! but then jgy starts stirring up rumours about wwx and lwj is honestly so tired of this shit

and bc people keep attacking the wens, wwx manages to collect the rest of the marks from the other fears

jgy sends his letter: dear wwx sorry for the deception yada yada yada

but wwx is aware of that shit and just kills himself before he can finish reading it

whoo apocalypse averted but lwj comes to help with the wens just in time for his burial so not whoo?

anyway we know wwx isn’t dead and he’s just vibing in another coma or something equivalent (why does he die twice in this au? bc idk how s5 will end but it’s a tragedy horror podcast and i want them to be happy so he gets to die twice)

anyway, the avatar of the web, mister manipulation and secrets extraordinaire nie huaisang is very pissed after jgy manipulated his brother into becoming an avatar of the slaughter and decides to just expose the dude

lxc kills him bc he deserves to kill jgy tbh,,, manipulative toad

nhs also restores wwx’s rep bc they were besties in uni and i refuse to accept anything else

he rocks up to the cottage/farm and is like hey guys i helped clear wwx’s name and wen qing is like hes fucking dead what help were you? and nhs is like ?? he’s not dead

so they unbury him and lwj wakes him up through the power of love and all that jazz

anyway, wwx manages to do *insert super cool thing here* and gets rid of all the fears and they get a happy ending bc i really want them to have a happy ending

do they stay living on the farm/cottage with the wens?? no but they buy a cottage nearby and happily live there together raising rabbits and growing idk pumpkins
