ooo tea on your no-go tropes if ur comfortable sharing

oh sure they're nothing so weird or specific that it's going to call out one specific fic writer, since it's all stuff that I've seen multiple people write and/or talk and/or speculate about. (and some are holdovers from the comics; comics are hardly immune from me not liking things in them.)

Steve getting de-serumed. This one is a huge absolute no for me, and I'm not sure what about it makes me so uncomfortable, but it just does. It makes me so uncomfortable that I don't want to poke at it to figure out why. I know there was a lot of speculation about this circa CACW, around when the title was released but before there were any details of the movie known (when it was assumed it would be closer to the comics counterpart), and then it came again around IW and Endgame both, something about the idea of like..."both the audience and the in-universe characters need to know that Steve isn't Captain America just because he has the serum!" something about the "he needs to be physically depowered in order to Prove Himself" just rubs me absolutely the wrong way. (I think this is another factor in why the Captain Carter What If timeline bothers me so much, but like. there are multiple factors there. I think I talked once about how I have set points in canon and Steve getting the serum is one of them.) (there is one fic I like where the Avengers got deaged and Steve got shrunk back to pre-serum size, but not de-serumed, that one's fine.)

post-Ragnarok (usually IW/Endgame AUs) fics that have Loki on the Raft -- no-go, makes me super uncomfortable, don't want to read it -- I've read enough of it to know that I don't want to read more and it's just not my thing. fine if people like it, just not for me; not something I want to read, not something I'm ever going to write.

anything that characterizes Loki's adoption as baby-stealing (again, What If is not immune) -- I go on fairly regular rants about this, but I (somewhat unusually) have the background of someone who's done a not-insignificant amount of academic work on infant abandonment in the pre-modern world, so it's something I know a lot about on a legal/cultural level. I sometimes say only semi-facetiously that I got into this fandom because as someone who actually knows about this stuff I have a moral responsibility to write about it in a historically-accurate-inspired manner, except as we all know I have not actually posted the chapter that deals really extensively with it. But it makes me really frustrated that people don't seem to realize this was a historical reality and something that had a lot of laws associated with it, instead of being a freak occurrence that is Obviously Bad.

there are a lot of common tropes about Asgard that just make me insane. a brief survey: feudalism, primogeniture, sexism/misogyny -- like, the standard-issue high fantasy stuff that just gets transferred over without any critical thought. which, if that's what you want to write, fine, I hate it, but that's my problem, not yours, no one's forcing me to read it. people putting racism in Valhalla, hate that one, so much.

anything that uses comics!Natasha's backstory for MCU!Natasha. I realize that ten years ago this seemed a lot more reasonable (Natasha having a version of the super soldier serum, being extremely long-lived, etc.), but really from TWS onwards it should have been obvious that that was not the backstory that the MCU was using, and if you are still using that as a writer in 2022 I am judging you. like, I try not to judge people too much in terms of like. ignoring canon, but I literally can't read anything that still uses 2012 base assumptions. (this is hypocritical for me on several levels, though it's also one of the reasons I had to get out of Star Wars, but hey, brains aren't rational. it's one of the casualties of me coming back into the fandom late. it probably would not be a problem for me if I'd stuck around. I'd probably have the same problem I have in Star Wars.)

on a related note, one of my MCU NOTPs is BuckyNat and part of that is because so much of it depends on transferring comics!Natasha's backstory over to MCU!Natasha. they have only interacted twice in canon and both times they were trying to kill each other. every other time they have been in the same scene one or the other of them was interacting with Steve, not each other. like, the heart wants what it wants, shipping is shipping, but treating it as canon-established (which many, many people do in and out of fic fandom, I'm in non-fic fandom circles and people talk about it there as if it's something onscreen) is absurd to me and I'm just ????? to the extent that now I hate it. but no one is forcing me to read it, the heart wants the heart wants, I obviously ship something else so I'm not objective there -- it's just another no-go for me.

comics transference in general. this is going to sound weird, because obviously the MCU is an adaptation of the comic books, but at fourteen years in it should be obvious that you cannot uncritically transfer things over wholesale, especially when it comes to established characters, especially if it outright contradicts canon. I can't read comics!Clint characterization in MCU fic. that ship sailed in 2015 -- honestly, it sailed in 2012, but whatever; we have established that people saw a different movie in 2012 than the one that's on the screen. by the way, the actual MCU is not immune to this; it is at its absolute weakest when it just transfers things over from the comics and expects them to work. they don't. because the MCU ain't the comics. (the worst offender is the Loki ep "Journey Into Mystery" but it is not alone.)

just various characterization tendencies that I see in fandom -- characterization is actually the number one reason I don't usually read fic in my writing fandoms, because we all see characters differently and it's one of the very few things that will make me start doubting my own writing. or just making me angry. (I actually have a very short temper, I hate so many things, I just don't talk about them on main.) I know my characterization does not fly for a lot of people (though unlike in Star Wars, MCU readers don't tell me about it, but I know it has to be true because I've been in fandom for two decades), so again, it is what it is. I know how to click a back button.

there are so many ships I either outright hate or just dislike, but I tend to OTP pretty hardcore once I get there and no one is forcing me to read them. it just gets frustrating sometimes when the ships I dislike are the most common ships for the characters I also write and/or ship with other people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but then I also can't really read fic for my own ships because uuuuuuuhhhhhhh the characterization is Wrong. not wrong, just Wrong for me personally. which is why I by and large don't read in my writing fandoms.

Steve Rogers is all hard edges. stop softening him. what the fuck.

Stark:  Oh now you've done it.

Sure enough, something small hit the back of his head with a surprising amount of force. Bucky jerked his head forward, glancing toward Hill’s office to see if she was watching before turning around to glare at Tash. Her face was pleasant and neutral, as if she was expecting him to ask a quick question, rather than knowing he was pissed because she’d just assaulted him with candy.  He mouthed, “fucking OW!” and she raised a single eyebrow at him. 

Bucky: that was not an invitation Tash

Stark: Wait, why are you both first names and I’m Stark?

            I can’t change it.

Bucky couldn’t stop himself from frowning at his phone, despite the fact that the phone could not see it and Actual Tash, who was in the room with him, also could not see it. How on earth had she gotten this deeply wrong idea? Rogers was cute but was so square that he might as well have been made of stone. Also: straight.

Natasha:

A small sound came from his right, and Bucky looked over to find Tony had knocked his headset off the desk, apparently while actually throwing his hands into the air in distress. He was sputtering and beginning to turn red. Bucky glanced nervously at Hill’s window again and looked away just as she lifted her head to look out at the WHSR floor, specifically at the group desk where they all sat.

Bucky: okay Tash maybe dial it back

            Hill just looked out at us

Natasha: So your position is you have no interest in becoming more closely acquainted with Steve’s ass?

Bucky: i don’t have a position in that i have never given it any thought

            but yes

            not interested

Stark: Heads up here comes Hill.

Passive enjoyer = simply enjoyed it and the fan content made for it OR Creative enjoyer = actively made art, fanfic, cosplay, etc etc etc.

Harry Potter - creative enjoyer - My very first. This shit was a family affair in my house. I went to watch parties, themed parties. I cosplayed shittily, wrote shitty fanfic, and my walls were plastered floor to ceiling in teen magazine posters. Went to the Exhibition. Every second movie would come out in July so I would pretend it was like a birthday gift to me.

Twilight - creative enjoyer - Jfc. Don’t get me started. I still have my Edward action figure whose now missing both hands. Used to write self insert fanfic on quizzilla.com. RIP you beast of a website

The Walking Dead - passive enjoyer - This was also a family affair. Every sunday we would all gather round our shitty TV for the newest episode. I was more of a liveblogger than anything else. My dad has a bit to this day that ‘Hershel isn’t dead. He’ll be back.’ Yeah, sure dad.

Legend of Zelda - creative enjoyer - For most of my childhood I was passive, only really doodling Twilight Princess stuff sometimes. Then BOTW came out and it all changed.

Lord of the Rings - passive enjoyer - I look at Legolas and Aragorn. That’s enough for me. I don’t need creative works because I just need to look at them.

Marvel (Spider-man and Loki mostly) - creative enjoyer - I’ve been drawing these guys since birth, for better or for worse. MCU can suck my nuts but so can Loki franchise /sex DC (Batman) - creative enjoyer - Batman the Animated series did something bad to me. Now I draw Joker sometimes. Watch out, stay safe out there

Sherlock and Doctor Who - passive enjoyer - I’m putting these two together since I never really made fan art or anything, but I did attend watch parties for both on several occasions.

Supernatural - creative enjoyer - Sighs. Sighs even harder. Somewhere out there, deep in the depths of fanfic.net there’s miles of really really really bad fanfic. Somewhere…. Final Fantasy VII - creative enjoyer - Sighs far more dreamily. My favvvvv my ultimate fav. Sephiroth is my fictional other and LOMF. Many, many arts of him throughout every sketchbook I own. Also some fanfics IIRC.

TF2 - creative enjoyer - I used to draw Medic and Pyro kissing<3

Homestuck - creative enjoyer - War flashbacks. Not only was I a semi-well known fanartist, I was also a semi-well known cosplayer in my city. Fic data from 2023

Happy new year! This was a big year for me because I got back into reading fanfiction, and boy howdy did I read a lot of it. Over the year I tracked what fics I read got that sweet, sweet data about how much of what I read and when. So now it's time for it to all come together! I put the major stats above the read more line, and below are some other little details about the tags and types of fics. Without further ado, let's get into it!

My goal this year was to read 1000 fics which I realized around June was NOT going to happen. I actually read about 651 fics including re-reads. Not too shabby!

The total words of all the fics I started was 5,196,016 and multiplying by the percent finished (could be >100 for re-reads, or <100 for dnf) I read about 6,214,399 words. So, HOLY BALLS 6.2 MILLION WORDS???? JFC. THATS LIKE 16K EVERY SINGLE DAY. ok i will never again tell myself i didn't read enough this year. Can you imagine if I had hit 1000 fics?

Something else fun about the word count is that the average length was about 1584 words/fic.

My top months by number of fics were February (108 fics), April (88 fics), and March (66 fics). In terms of word count, my top months were February (1.4 million words), January (1.16 million words) and August (804k words).

Before we get into tags, here's the graphs for the stuff I mentioned earlier. Keep in mind that the first two are about fics I started, not necessarily finished, so the count may vary a bit.

The top three longest fics I read were meet me where the light greets the dark at 115514 words, Subito Sempre at 107053 words, and This Game We Play at 101717 words. Those also happen to be some of my favorite fics of all time.

Here's a graph about the length of the fic I read. "Format of a oneshot" is something that may be multiple chapters but was short enough that it could've been one. Idk this database was built on vibes.

I know 54% of the authors! Speaking of, there were 208 distinct authors I read from this year. My top author was JynxedOracle at 33 fics!

VegasPete almost had it for a while but KimChay will always be my ride or die. Also, if you can't tell, I basically read almost exclusively KinnPorsche The Series fics. For my top fandom outside of KPTS, that would be MCU, and my top non-KP relationship was SpideyPool. My highest rarepair within KPTS will go to my grave or the groupchat. :*)

My highest read additional tag by a WIDE margin (I'm sorry mother) was porn without plot. (Guess that explains why the average words is so low).

i fell asleep to eddy burback reviewing morbius and i dreamed morbius 2 was out and eddy burback watched it 5 days in a row and that castiel supernatural was a character in it and part of sonys whole mcu jr thing was connecting the sony mcu to the supernatural universe and i remember saying to my discord server/groupchat "i kinda wanna see all the castiel scenes in morbius 2 but i think that would just be very disappointing and a waste of time" and i started complaining about the quality of all marvel movies, sony or not, and before i could send the message i woke up really scared and i only just realized it all wasnt real like 30 seconds before i started typing. if i recall cas and morbius were like... allies. i remember a scene of castiel and morbius in a coffee shop. and he was sort of a background character ? and i think there was something about morbius helping cas recover his grace ? i dont know. but he was in it. and he was in it enough for scene compilations of him. and i remember myself on youtube and my resolve was crumbling as i looked at "castiel morbius 2 all scenes" it was like 5 minutes long

You talked about old and influential larries leaving the fandom around 2018. For me, it was pretty telling that bromances, bulletprooflarry, srslycris and the other who had their flight information (i don't remember the name right now) all left around the same time. They all knew at the time.

yup. their group chat. everyone had left by june 2018, most of them before.

srslycris didn’t bother posting to @business-direction anymore because it would get ugly as fuck (Harry’s business all tied into the Azoff’s)… and the business account was called @azoff-direction for a while in 2014-15.

They and other Larries had flight info and industry info (connections to RS, to other industry publications, old hacked email info). They knew.

The ones who came back all became Harries.

The Larrie fashion archives got the memo and slowed down the updating on Louis, stopped altogether in 2020, I think?

@bulletprooflarry made her infamous post in Dec 2017 where she said that Louis was lying about LT1; he “had no album” and he didn’t want a solo career.

@srslycris came back as @towlersnow and made a post in 2020 (?) about Louis wanting to be a housewife to Harry Styles because Harry was gonna be the EGOT-MCU breadwinner of the household.

@jlf23tumble started bullying Louies / Louie Larries in 2018, saying that Louis always wanted to be an X Factor judge, it was great GP exposure, and Louies who disagreed were “Rads,” “sad trombones.”

okay okay I watched murderville the other day, a show where celebrity guest stars are brought on to solve a murder without having a script and ken jeong and kumail nanjiani were on it. I previously headcanoned that this was another of changs attempts at changnesia, getting bored of a normal life at greendale. but, everyone else is still themselves making kumail nanjiani canon in the community universe (im realizing that mcu is already canon in the community universe and my headcanon also doesn't make sense cause it was like 2am when I thought of it but just go with it guys) BUT, both danny pudi and donald glover played in the mcu. danny as com guy #1 in the winter soldier, and donald as the guy peter webbed to his car, aka miles morales's uncle. so abed and troy definitely both watched their respective mcu movies and wondered why the hell they're in it, and why the hell they didn't have bigger parts.

BUT, this is where I get to reform my headcanon with the remembered knowledge that kumail is a character in community, and to make it look less stupid. it's canon that the mcu movies exist, and kumail played in the mcu. granted, that was in 2021 and he was in community 2015, so he wouldn't have been an mcu actor at the time. but kumail has been acting since 2008, at no time would he be a janitor at some community college in colorado. so, who is he then? no one other than kingo himself. yes, he's been keeping himself busy by playing generations of bollywood actors, but maybe he got bored of the grand and lavish he was living, so he took a break. maybe raj kingo deva took a hiatus in 2015 and kingo showed up in colorado, trying out a normal life. but with the secret paintball tournament, it wasn't normal and he quickly headed back to his actor life. and when eternals came out in 2022, the study group saw it (probably individually, but if the movie says they've met up again over the years or got together before when the movie starts, I'll say they watched it together) and it was jeff who noticed at first, texting the groupchat about the guy they accused of hosting a secret paintball game for city college was most definitely kumail nanjiani, but then abed points out everything I've just said about it being kingo himself, making this a really weird inception type thing (idk I've never seen the movie) where both the mcu exists irl and the actors and the movies exist irl.

so I thought i made this make sense but it's also 1am and I haven't really been sleeping so it doesn't make sense. I just love eternals and kumail nanjiani and community okay??

Cheerlead from afar and keep to yourself. Join a groupchat. Yell about headcanons with your friends. Leave kudos. Leave comments. Make fic recs. Bookmark everything. Read or watch and then forget it.

Treat canon like gospel. Treat canon like a dumpster fire. Only read/write/art coffeeshop AUs. Decide your corner will be all hurt no comfort. Decide your corner  will be all fluff no angst.

Fandom isn't one size fits all, and there is no one right way to do it. So find what works for you, and don't worry about all of the outside noise. It doesn't matter how everyone else does fandom.

Fan Autoethnography

Reflection

To start off, the two fandoms I'm going to be talking in depth today are Batman and Harry Potter. I'm choosing these two because Harry Potter has been a fandom that I've been apart of for many years and I've been deeply involved in the community and Batman is a fandom that I've been shallowly apart of for years but have obsessively fallen into lately and reflects a recent desire to analyze media that I engage with.

I own a few pieces of fan merch, mostly Harry Potter or MCU. I have official HP merch from Universal like a Deathly Hallows crop top and a Slytherin pendant necklace and scrunchie. I also have non-official merch like a tumbler with HP plants or various MCU stickers that I got from my friend's business. I don't own anything Batman related.

Recently, I have gotten into analyzing the movies/TV shows that I watch and while I don't go back and rewatch them, I do look them up online to see the cinematography choices, themes, and other relevant information which I've done with various Batman media. I've also just deep-dived into how Batman has been portrayed in animated movies, TV shows, and live actions like the Burton movies, Nolan, and latest R-Pat revival because it's an interest of mine.

I've definitely been involved in fandom communities. I engage with fanfiction for both communities respectively, right now Batman but I have engaged with Harry Potter fanfic in the past and probably will again in the future. I've also created fanworks - like, really long fanfictions for Harry Potter and other fandoms, including Batman - and in doing that I've engaged in discussions with other people in those fandoms. I've also been apart of groupchats with people and started friendships online over mutual interests.

I've definitely followed actors from media that I engaged with in the past, but I no longer do that because I don't want to follow celebrities. I fan a finsta for my fanfic writing and all I follow are other fandom members on there.

I've only engaged with rewatch podcasts slightly. My only experience was watching the pilot episode of the Lost Girl rewatch podcast because they just aren't what I enjoy. I'd rather just listen to music. I'm much more interested in watching videos about fandom on YouTube, whether it be discussing the media itself or the fandom. It doesn't matter if I'm apart of the fandom the video is about, I just like learning about fandom so I'm inclined to watch the video if I like the creator, like Strange Aeons.

Analysis

I do think there is an "us" vs. "them" binary because of the way fans are viewed but those who don't see themselves as participating in a fandom. I also see it in myself when discussing fandoms that I'm not apart of because I'm an outsider of a community. In my fandoms, I'm an insider. For Harry Potter, I think I'm expert who is accomplished and has spent several years writing and has a good amount of followers. For Batman, I think I'm newer and still learning about the media so that I can feel like an expert. But for mainstream, I think bleeding feels uncomfortable, because for me growing up there was such strict separation to where now when I try to blend the lines I feel such push back internally because of the many years I tried to repress this part of myself.

I think anonymity affects online fandoms by making people feel more comfortable. When I was younger and making my way into fandom, if I had to use my legal name and add a picture, I would've run the other way, but instead I had the freedom to choose a name that I liked more than my legal one and the ability to be whoever I wanted. My pseudonym allowed me to write what I wanted and gain control over my thoughts and feelings and in turn meet people online that I never would've had the chance to in real life. Anonymity makes people feel free, which is good, but I do see the downsides because I saw firsthand the bullying that comes when people don't see the repercussions for their actions. When I was creating my podcast, it helped me because I already had the experience of existing in a fandom space and knowing about Harry Potter and the queer community but also felt the freedom of speaking into my phone mic under the guise of not giving my name.

I think fandom has acted as both a site for me to built autonomy and intimacy but I did use it for psychological compensation. I went looking for something when I went online; I wanted to engage more with a media I loved, and then I wanted to continue the story. I did have a parasocial relationship - or perhaps a hyperfixation on certain medias - where I just need to cling onto a media and continue the story either through reading about it continuously or writing about it. However, through fandom I also found community and people. People I could talk to about my day, people who gave me advice, people who become my friends. I also became more confident in my writing and my abilities in simple graphic design, the latter which I wouldn't have engaged with if I hadn't been apart of fandom.

Language that associates me with my fandom outside of fandom spaces is asking "what house are you?" and saying in response "Slytherin." Harry Potter has become so large that the use of the four Hogwarts houses or just asking someone for their house outside of a fandom space immediately cues someone in that you're talking about the series. It automatically lets the other person know that you're apart of the fandom, or at least a little bit enough of a fan to associate with a house or have taken the quiz. I don't really use it outside of fandom spaces. The only time I have is after I had taken an in-depth fan made house quiz and I loved it and thought it was completely thorough and wanted to share it with them but we weren't talking about the fandom, but otherwise I wouldn't bring it up.
