He HATED buns and he made this clear early on. I don’t remember how early on, but within the first month at least.

By that I mean buns as a hairstyle. A couple weeks in, I remember distinctly sitting on his futon one Sunday night after getting off shift from my caregiving job while he tried to dismantle mine. “Just stick with ponytails. I like ponytails,” he said.

I have moderately thick but stick-straight hair. When it’s long, it looks spindly and sad unless I use a curling iron, yet it’s heavy enough where my ponytail *will* give me a headache. A ponytail hanging halfway down my back really does me no favors - it physically hurts, and I hate how it looks. But that’s what I did for years, because if I looped it up into a bun, he would complain.

(I grew it long many times to be able to generate a hair donation. I have donated my hair for wig-making purposes 4 times. In 2019, I decided that donation would be my last. I didn’t feel like doing it anymore!)

I’m starting to feel like my hair is “too long” for a cute ponytail - and by that I mean it is barely past my shoulders. I have found myself looping it up into a bun more lately, because it’s more comfortable. And then stopping myself - like, can I really do this without getting shit for it?

I went out with friends tonight and actually paused for a moment, wondering if I could show up to the bar with my hair in a bun. As if they would care! I went out with two (married) men and one woman, and no one found it worth mentioning. She had her hair in a bun, too.

It seems completely insane that this has taken up ANY of my brain space all these years.
