Domus de Maria (Sardinia). Chia. Sunset. This is the setting of the sun seen from the rocks above the Roman road that connects Chia (Bithia) to Nora, in front of the Su Cardulinu island (the mushroom) and next to the Cala Petra Delphina beach. All of this can be reached from the eastern end of Su portu beach (the reference is to the port of Bithia). The ancient road (4th century AD) is 5.5 km long with maximum gradients of 70 metres, some stretches of the ancient paving and the whole route with sea view. Domus de Maria (Sardinia). Chia. Su Portu beach. It is the beach of the ancient marina di Chia. The western part is more suggestive from a landscape point of view: almost evanescent port by now, Chia tower, remains of Bithia; but as a beach the eastern part is better, more sandy and not stony like the other side. It is about 250 m long, almost a cove, in a crescent shape. Pula (Sardinia). Tower of Cala d'Ostia (1600). Leaving Nora, we still stand on the small white-sand beach enclosed by the, church of saint Efisio; then on the way back to Domus, in the dirt road that runs alongside the sea, we find the Spanish watchtower of Cala d'Ostia. Images: a) tower of Cala d'Ostia west side; b) east side; c) Nora beach, in the background the church of sant'Efisio (1089, tpq). The church looks north-west and is located a few steps from the sea. Teulada (Sardinia). Torre del Budello or Sant Juan del Bodel (1601). The tower and the beach of Budello are located on the Teuladian coast of the Sardinian Channel. The tower, placed on the hill, dominates the bay and looks out for the other towers in the vicinity. It was built by an entrepreneur from Cagliari, a certain Pietro Porta, who however had the contribution of the Royal administration of the towers and was built with the typical characteristics of the others: truncated cone shape, a room with an entrance raised from the base, where the cistern was instead and supported the parade ground (terrace) with a central pillar. The function, obviously, was to defend against piracy. Below it the beach, never so crowded and in front of it, the red island. Urbino (Marche). Sunset seen from Pian del Monte. From the square of Pian del Monte, which I prefer to call that - and not Rome, as fascism wanted - you can observe a beautiful panorama of the hills and mountains to the north-west; in this case we observe the sunset. San Giovanni Suergiu (Sardinia). Is Pistis (furriadroxu). That of the "furriadroxus" is a particular story, concerns above all the territory of Sulcis and the Gallura (where they are called "statzus"). Are dealing with agro-pastoral settlements, sorts of farms. Furriadroxu is equivalent in Sardinian to "place where you return" and refers to the abandonment of territories due to the raids of Moors, Saracens, North African pirates, throughout the modern and medieval ages and the subsequent return to those territories at the end of the phenomenon, towards the mid-nineteenth century (concept also extended to the pastoral function as a place where the animals return). Sulcis was heavily hit by Berber raids and complementary phenomena, but before the piracy of the Moors/Mauris (Mauritans, Moroccans, Algerians), contact took place through deportation/transfer by the Vandals, whose kingdom, starting from the 5th century, included Sardinia, Corsica and the Balearic Islands together with North Africa. In Sardinia even today, also by extension, the citizens of Sulcis are called "Maurreddus" as those populations naturally mixed with the resident population, then spreading throughout the territory. The situation during the Byzantine domination becomes even more complicated. Less reliable is to trace the etymology to sa meurra (blackbird) or to the bishop Maurus. Su furriadroxu is generally a single-family, settlement as indicated by the denominations including the surname together with the article Is, and are distinguished from "medaus" (metatum, enclosed) which includes several families. Is Pistis (21 inhabitants), in the photo, which I visited during my holiday, is a furriadroxu of San Giovanni Suergiu, a seaside resort about 4 km away. Aglientu (Sardinia). New trips to Sardinia. Dawn in Vignola mare (Chischinaggju or Saragosa beach). Chiscinagghju beach (also called Saragosa) is located in Vignola mare, belonging to the Municipality of Aglientu. The sand is light golden, very fine, warm and compact, with some red rocks that emerge from the ground. The water is transparent with colors that vary between blue and green. The pine forest hosts the campsite where we camped. The municipality of Aglientu, about 7 km away from the beach, has a long coastline measuring 22 km. The village was formed between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The village of Vignola mare is older than the capital municipality, originally it housed fishermen, then it was converted to tourism. Urbino (Marche). Raffaello's monument and birthplace (Casa Santi). Raffaello Sanzio or Santi (Urbino 1483 - Rome 1520) was a famous Renaissance painter and architect from Urbino. His birthplace (14th century) is today a house museum in the street that bears his name and is also home to the Raffaello Academy, founded in 1869. Domus De Maria (Sardinia). Administrative island of Piscinnì. Tower (1639). Completely surrounded by the territory of Teulada, the administrative island of Piscinnì (exclave) instead belongs to Domus De Maria. It includes the white sand beach of the same name, the Spanish tower that we see in three different shots and the pond. Teulada (Sardinia). From Malfatano to Budello. Chia is a site that allows you to visit beautiful places to the west and east of it. To the west we immediately find Teulada, whose beauty of the marine territory is unspeakable and one considers that an important part is taken from the Sardinians by military servitude. Traveling along the coast (the town is decidedly inland), after Capo Teulada (extreme militarized southern tip) we make our first stop at Capo Malfatano and observe the Spanish tower from 1639. Continuing we find the beach of Budello, also equipped with a tower of the same name dating back to 1601. Along the shoreline there are several Spanish towers as the area was subject to frequent Saracen raids, reason for which the village was rebuilt away from the coast. Beautiful sunrise in Su portu, considered particular compared to the other beaches of Chia for its crescent shape, for the looming tower, for the archaeological area of Bithia and the Roman road. From the tower you can also observe a wide landscape from east to west. Renovated after two earthquakes in neoclassical style at the end of the eighteenth century, the interior of the cathedral of Urbino is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three white naves covered by a barrel vault, crowned, at the transept crossing, by a majestic coffered dome. Ancona (Marche). Views from the train station. Ancona (from the Greek Ankòn, elbow) coming from the west, it is not a city of passage, but I wanted to enter it for the first time (perhaps) and while waiting for the train I took a walk. The station is far from the historic center which extends over the hills, part of Mount Conero, which then degrade into the Adriatic. Between the center and the station is the port. The panorama of Ancona is characterized by the cathedral of San Ciriaco (996, Romanesque-Byzantine) on the top of the Guasco hill. Aritzo/Desulo (Sardinia). Passing. Even when are passing through a municipality that has a certain name take the opportunity to fix some representative image. It happened in this case of impromptu return home from vacation and immediate restart. Aritzo and Desulo are 16 km away, which however have a significant geographic impact, one in the Barbagia di Belvì, the other in the Mandrolisai, which separates the former from the rest of the Barbagia. Aritzo is known as the country of chestnuts and "sa carapigna" (a sorbet). The arborense variant of Sardinian is spoken there (limba de mesania). Desulo, higher up, reaches 1000 meters above sea level, hosts among other things the nuraghe and the highest pass (over 1200 m), as well as the highest peak in Sardinia, on Gennargentu (1834 m). In ancient times it was divided into three autonomous borough, the largest of which was the homeland of viagiantes and camminantes (itinerant and peddlers).
